Abstract:In modern information warfare, medium and long-range weapons with high strike precision are often used to ensure stable, accurate, and ruthless conditions. However, the target system often has multiple target units and which target units to specifically attack becomes the primary issue. This study constructs a target combat system network based on the complex network theory and maximum entropy principle, establishes a key target selection model based on this network, and then determines the use of medium and long-range weapons to strike the key target unit in the enemy combat system network. The key target selection model consists of four parts. The first is a value model of the node itself constructed by comprehensively considering the relationship between the target and the war, the importance of the target in the system, and the threat of the target. The second is a node network value model based on the potential field theory. The third is to construct a cascading failure model of the target system through the definition of triples (results of strike action, target unit status, and failure influence relationship between target units). Fourth, with the optimal cost-effectiveness ratio as the objective function, the evaluation criterion function model is established. Case scenarios and simulation experiments illustrate the rationality and effectiveness of the method which can provide effective solutions for commanders to select key targets.

Abstract:Moving target defense (MTD) can break through asymmetry between attackers and defenders. To improve the effectiveness of cybersecurity defense techniques, defense requires not only advanced and practical defense technologies but effective, scientific decision-making methods. Due to complex attacker–defender interaction, autonomous, automatic, accurate, and effective selection of the optimal strategy is a challenging topic in the field of MTD. The essence of cybersecurity lies in the interaction between the attacker and defender. Game theory is a useful mathematical tool for strategy selection in a competitive environment. It provides strong theoretical support for the analysis of cyberattack and defense behaviors and subsequent decision-making, and can significantly improve the decision-making ability of MTD. This study presents the basic concepts of MTD and game theory, followed by a literature review, to study MTD decision-making methods based on game theory from the dimensions of space, time, space–time, and bounded rationality. Limitations of MTD game decision-making studies are discussed, as well as research directions, to provide references for future research.

Abstract:Aiming at the fact that the moving target defense game model fails to accurately portray attack and defense gains, resulting in bias in attack and defense games and the inability to select effective defense strategies, we construct the moving target three-way evolutionary game defense model (MTTEGDM). Firstly, the model is defined and analyzed theoretically under the premise of uncertainty and irrationality. Then, combined with the three-way decisions, the attack intention is introduced into the target network loss calculation, and a dynamic weight adjustment algorithm based on the three-way decisions is proposed to accurately characterize the attack and defense gains from a multi-attribute perspective. Finally, the evolutionary game model is used to analyze the evolution trend of the multi-stage defense strategy, so as to carry out feasible and effective defense behavior. The simulation results show that the model can accurately predict the optimal defense strategy of moving targets in different stages. Through a Monte Carlo simulation experiment, the proposed algorithm is compared with the traditional evolutionary game model, and the effectiveness and security of the proposed algorithm are verified.

Abstract:Timely and accurate assessment of battlefield strikes can improve the utilization of firepower resources and achieve optimal combat effectiveness. However, due to the complexity and uncertainty of the environment in actual war, it is difficult to obtain accurate target damage information, which can be expressed as uncertain, incomplete, or fuzzy decision information in mathematics. In this paper, the stochastic multi-criteria acceptability analysis method is used to evaluate the damage level of the target under an uncertain environment. We establish a set of characteristic indicators for the target damage effect and use the tracking results of maneuvering targets to determine the degree of target damage. Aiming at the uncertainty of the target data, the upper and lower limit dataset of uncertainty is established, and the membership function of the damage characteristic index is given. Combined with the probability density function, the comprehensive membership function of the damage effect is given, the acceptability index of each damage grade is compared, and the damage effect evaluation with uncertain weight information is given. Based on target vulnerability characteristics and combined with multiple damage elements, a target damage assessment model with multiple damage parameters is established, and the damage results are fitted. We study the relationship between target damage efficiency and various damage parameters. For the optimization strike problem of maximum damage to targets with multiple random incomplete information, a maximum damage optimization model is established using the objective function of maximizing damage probability and the missile firepower coverage area as constraint conditions. Experimental results show that the algorithm used in this paper can effectively solve the damage assessment problem under the condition of random incomplete information.

Effectiveness Evaluation Model of Moving Target Defense Based on System Attack Surface

Abstract:Evaluation of moving target defense (MTD) effectiveness has become one of the fundamental problems in current studies. In this paper, an evaluation model of MTD effectiveness based on system attack surface (SAS) is proposed to extend this model covering enterprise-class topology and multi-layered moving target (MT) techniques. The model is focused on the problem of incorrect performance assessment caused by inaccurately characterizing the process of attacking and defending. Existing evaluation models often fail to describe MTD dynamically in a process. To deal with this static view, offensive and defensive process based on a player’s move is presented. Besides, it converts all the attack and defense actions into the process, and interactivities are evaluated by system view extended attack surface model. Previously, the proposed attack surface models are not concerned about the links between nodes and vulnerabilities affected by topologies. After comprehensively analyzing the impact of interactions in the system, a SAS model is proposed to demonstrate how resources of the system are affected by the actions of attackers and defenders, thus ensuring the correctness of parameters for SAS in measuring MT technology. Moreover, by generating a sequence of those shifting parameters, a nonhomogeneous hierarchical hidden Markov model is used to find the possible sequence of attacking states by introducing the partial Viterbi algorithm. Also, a sequence of attacking states is defined to illustrate how adversaries are handled by MT technologies and how much additional consumption costs are increased by the system resource reconfiguration. Finally, the simulation of the proposed approach is given in a case study to demonstrate the feasibility and validity of the proposed effectiveness evaluation model in a systematic and dynamic view.

An Integrated Cooperative Guidance Design for Target Assignment and Simultaneous Attack on Multiple Targets

Abstract:This paper proposes an integrated cooperative guidance strategy for multiple unmanned aerial vehicles to simultaneously attack multiple targets. To solve the challenging cooperative attack problem coupled with the target assignment problem simultaneously in a unified one-phase framework, a novel auxiliary index denoted as the integrated relative distance is designed and analysed from two opposite perspectives. Because of its special properties, the proposed integrated relative distance plays a crucial role in evaluating dynamic engagement situations between attackers and targets, and it further provides a criterion for whether the cooperative attack mission is completed. Then all integrated relative distances are minimised to directly derive a cooperative guidance law for attackers based on optimal control theory. The simultaneous minimisation of integrated relative distances from both forward and backward perspectives ensures that each target is destroyed by at least one attacker and all attackers are fully exploited to obtain optimal attack performance. By this means, the target assignment problem is automatically solved and the cooperative simultaneous attack is achieved. Several simulation cases are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed integrated cooperative guidance strategy.

Abstract:As an active defense technique to change asymmetry in cyberattack-defense confrontation, moving target defense research has become one of the hot spots. In order to gain better understanding of moving target defense, background knowledge and inspiration are expounded at first. Based on it, the concept of moving target defense is analyzed. Secondly, literature analysis method is adopted to explain the design principles and system architecture of moving target defense. In addition, some relevant key techniques are introduced from the aspects of strategy generation, shuffling implementation, and performance evaluation. After that, the applications of moving target defense in different network architectures are illustrated. Finally, existing problems and future trend in this field are elaborated so as to provide a basis for further study.

Abstract:In this work, we are dedicated to multi-target active object tracking (AOT), where there are multiple targets as well as multiple cameras in the environment. The goal is maximize the overall target coverage of all cameras. Previous work makes a strong assumption that each camera is fixed in a location and only allowed to rotate, which limits its application. In this work, we relax the setting by allowing all cameras to both move along the boundary lines and rotate. In our setting, the action space becomes much larger, which leads to much higher computational complexity to identify the optimal action. To this end, we propose to leverage the action selection from multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) network to prune the search tree of Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) method, so as to find the optimal action more efficiently. Besides, we model the motion of the targets to predict the future position of the targets, which makes a better estimation of the future environment state in the MCTS process. We establish a multi-target 2D environment to simulate the sports games, and experimental results demonstrate that our method can effectively improve the target coverage.

Abstract:Target threat assessment provides support for combat decision making. The multi-target threat assessment method based on a three-way decision can obtain threat classification while receiving threat ranking, thus avoiding the limitation of traditional two-way decisions. However, the heterogeneous situation information, attribute relevance, and adaptive information processing needs in complex battlefield environment bring challenges to existing methods. Therefore, this paper proposes a new multi-target three-way threat assessment method with heterogeneous information and attribute relevance. Firstly, dynamic assessment information is represented by heterogeneous information, and attribute weights are calculated by heterogeneous Criteria Importance Through Intercriteria Correlation (CRITIC). Then, the conditional probability is calculated by the heterogeneous weighted Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS), and the adaptive risk avoidance coefficients are constructed by calculating the uncertainty of the assessment value, and then the relative loss function matrices are constructed. Finally, the comprehensive loss function matrices are obtained by the weighted Heronian mean (HM) operator, and the comprehensive thresholds are calculated to obtain the three-way rules. The case study shows that compared with the existing methods, the proposed method can effectively handle the heterogeneous information and attribute relevance, and obtain the risk avoidance coefficients without presetting or field subjective settings, which is more suitable for the complex mission environment.

Abstract:This paper provides an overview of the weapon target assignment problem, which aims to optimize the assignment of weapons to targets in order to maximize weapon damage to targets. The weapon target assignment problem can be viewed as a specialized instance of the optimal resource assignment problem. With the advancement of weapons technology, high-speed and high-lethality missiles have become more advanced, and their tactical applications more diverse. These missiles can strike targets with greater accuracy and improved concealment, posing a significant threat to both attackers and defenders. Consequently, the weapon target assignment problem has become a pressing concern in the field of military offense and defense. Subsequently, researchers worldwide are devoting significant efforts to address the weapon target assignment problem through the utilization of exact algorithms, heuristic algorithms, meta-heuristic algorithms, and artificial intelligence methods. This paper provides a brief review of the weapon target assignment problem development history, formula, solution techniques, and applications. We categorize weapon target assignment problems into four different formulas, considering the complexity of combat scenarios, and summarize various solution methods for each category. Furthermore, we also emphasize the relevance of weapon target assignment problems in national defense applications. Lastly, we conclude by discussing potential avenues for future research in addressing the weapon target assignment problem.

Abstract:Nowadays ,network configurations are typically deterministic ,static ,and homogeneous . These features reduce the difficulties for cyber attackers scanning the network to identify specific targets and gather essential information ,which gives the attackers asymmetric advantages of building up ,launching and spreading attacks .Thus the defenders are always at a passive position ,and the existing defense mechanisms and approaches cannot reverse this situation . Moving target defense (M TD) is proposed as a new revolutionary technology to alter the asymmetric situation of attacks and defenses .It keeps moving the attack surface of the protected target through dynamic shifting ,which can be controlled and managed by the administrator . In this way , the attack surface exposed to attackers appears chaotic and changes over time . Therefore , the work effort ,i .e ., the cost and complexity ,for the attackers to launch a successful attack ,will be greatly increased .As a result ,the probability of successful attacks will be decreased ,and the resiliency and security of the protected target will be enhanced effectively .In this paper ,we firstly introduce the basic concepts of M TD ,and classify the related works into categories according to their research field .Then ,under each category , we give a detailed description on the existing work ,and analyze and summarize them separately . Finally ,we present our understandings on M TD ,and summarize the current research status ,and further discuss the development trends in this field .
Optimal control strategies and target selection in multi-pursuer multi-evader differential games

Abstract:This paper is concerned with a conflict that N -pursuers versus M -evaders. It is a multi-pursuer multi-evader game extended from classical differential game theory to simultaneously address target selection and multi-player pursuit-evasion. Every pursuer attempts to intercept the evader it has chosen as its target while every evader does the opposite. This is modeled as a multi-player nonzero-sum differential game under a weighted directed graph. Moreover, a novel and more practical framework, the Unique-Choice (UC) games framework, is provided. Hamilton–Jacobi–Isaacs (HJI) is used for solving the game to derive the optimal distributed control strategy for each player based on graph theory. An important but has not been extensively studied issue, target selection, is studied. Different from the former research, this paper proposes a more reasonable criterion for target selection which makes the cost of pursuers minimized. The pursuers are proven to intercept evaders successfully with the proposed optimal pursuit strategy. Several illustrative examples under two different cases are presented, and the results show that the cost of pursuers with the proposed target selection algorithm is the minimum of all results.

Dynamic Weapon-Target Assignment for Active Protection of Aircraft

Abstract:The scenario of the active protection of an aircraft is that the aircraft threatened by multiple incoming missiles (denoted as attackers) defends itself by launching multiple defending missiles (denoted as defenders). To assign defenders to attackers properly so that the survivability of the aircraft is maximized, a multi-objective Dynamic Weapon Target Assignment (DWTA) model is developed. The objectives include: the hit probability of each defender, the miss distance of each defender, the final speed of each defender, and the distance between the aircraft and the attacker when the attacker is intercepted. These objectives are various and can be calculated based on the given flight states. Machine learning algorithms are used to predict these objectives so that the computational runtime is improved. With the calculated objectives, the DWTA problem can be solved using the Kuhn–Munkres algorithm. A comparison to the traditional single objective model demonstrates that the proposed multi-objective DWTA model can provide better solution with a computational runtime improvement.

Abstract:To overcome the problems of traditional distributed target allocation algorithms in terms of lack of target strategic priority, poor scalability, and robustness, this paper proposes a proximal strategy optimization algorithm that combines threat assessment and attention mechanism (TAPPO). Based on the distributed training framework, the algorithm integrates a threat assessment and dynamic attention strategy and designs a dynamic reward function based on the current hit rate of the drone and the missile benefit ratio to improve the algorithm’s exploration ability and scalability. Through an 8vs8 multi-UAV confrontation experiment in a digital twin simulation environment, the results show that the agent using the TAPPO algorithm for target allocation defeats the state machine with an 85% winning rate and is significantly better than other current mainstream target allocation algorithms, verifying the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Abstract:Reinforcement learning has shown a great ability and has defeated human beings in the field of real-time strategy games. In recent years, reinforcement learning has been used in cyberspace to carry out automated and intelligent attacks. Traditional defense methods are not enough to deal with this problem, so it is necessary to design defense agents to counter intelligent attacks. The interaction between the attack agent and the defense agent can be modeled as a multi-agent Markov game. In this paper, an adversarial decision-making approach that combines the Bayesian Strong Stackelberg and the WoLF algorithms was proposed to obtain the equilibrium point of multi-agent Markov games. With this method, the defense agent can obtain the adversarial decision-making strategy as well as continuously adjust the strategy in cyberspace. As verified in experiments, the defense agent should attach importance to short-term rewards in the process of a real-time game between the attack agent and the defense agent. The proposed approach can obtain the largest rewards for defense agent compared with the classic Nash-Q and URS-Q algorithms. In addition, the proposed approach adjusts the action selection probability dynamically, so that the decision entropy of optimal action gradually decreases.

Abstract:On the basis of the analysis of the characteristics of the photo-reconnaissance satellite, a model was built which describes the interactions among the probability of target detection versus the satellite's inclination, the detection width, the max access gap and the target characteristics. The model formulates the relationships between the technical index and the tactical index, and can be used in the requirement analysis, system design and effectiveness evaluation of photo-reconnaissance satellite. The results of the simulation which takes the large-scale ships as detection target are given to illustrate the applicability of this model.

Abstract:Target allocation is a crucial point in the cooperative interception process. In this paper, a new algorithm of dynamic situation assessment, target allocation and cooperative interception in groups is proposed for multi-target interception with multiple missiles. An effective situation assessment function is proposed, according to which the targets of each intercepting missile are assigned to maximize their efficiency. The new situation assessment function evaluates the flight status and cooperation of missiles, which considers not only the relative position and velocity mentioned in traditional functions, but also relative normal velocity, normal acceleration, maneuverability and cooperation between multiple missiles. During the interception process, the flight status could be evaluated dynamically, thus the allocation of the missiles could be real-time adjusted. To optimize target allocation, a method based on genetic algorithm is applied, which uses the dynamic situation assessment function based proportional navigation guidance law, and we also use proportional navigation guidance law to realize the interception to maneuvering targets with multiple missiles. Simulations for target allocation and target interception validate the effectiveness of the algorithm. Potential adjustments and improvements are proposed according to the simulation results.

Abstract:This paper is concerning the simultaneous attack problem with multiple missiles against a maneuvering target with unknown acceleration. The new guidance protocol, which avoids using the time-to-go information, ensures the simultaneous attack based on the consensus of the range-to-go and the approaching rate of each missile. This strategy is a distributed guidance law where each missile can only get information from neighbors. The consensus of the missiles is shown mathematically as well as with extensive simulations.

Abstract:Moving target defense has emerged as a critical paradigm of protecting a vulnerable system against persistent and stealthy attacks. To protect a system, a defender proactively changes the system configurations to limit the exposure of security vulnerabilities to potential attackers. In doing so, the defender creates asymmetric uncertainty and complexity for the attackers, making it much harder for them to compromise the system. In practice, the defender incurs a switching cost for each migration of the system configurations. The switching cost usually depends on both the current configuration and the following configuration. Besides, different system configurations typically require a different amount of time for an attacker to exploit and attack. Therefore, a defender must simultaneously decide both the optimal sequences of system configurations and the optimal timing for switching. In this paper, we propose a Markov Stackelberg Game framework to precisely characterize the defender's spatial and temporal decision-making in the face of advanced attackers. We introduce a relative value iteration algorithm that computes the defender's optimal moving target defense strategies. Empirical evaluation on real-world problems demonstrates the advantages of the Markov Stackelberg game model for spatial-temporal moving target defense.
