Masterpieces of Western Modern Bridges and Their Contribution to World Cultural Heritage

Abstract:Along with the quick development of the material,mathematics and mechanics science in the period from the 18th to the 19th centuries,the modern bridges in the period manifested themselves the varieties of new types.A collection of long span elevated railway bridges,suspension bridges and steel bridges mainly used with iron and steel materials and supported by the principles of the modern mechanics were gradually developed and came to maturity.In this paper,through the presentation of some typical modern bridges or the bridges that have milestone significance,the major achievements of the development of the bridges in the world,particularly the bridges in Euro-American countries,are described.These bridges have left the world valuable cultural heritage that are worth to be studied by the Chinese bridge designers and engineers and with reference to the bridges,it is expected that more bridges that have distinctive features can be designed and the still better future of bridges can be created.
