Abstract:The behavior of individual microscopic particles, such as an atom (or a photon), predicted using quantum mechanics, is dramatically different from the behavior of classical particles, such as a planet, determined using classical mechanics. How can the counter-intuitive behavior of the microscopic particle be verified and manipulated experimentally? David Wineland and Serge Haroche, who were awarded the Nobel Prize in physics in 2012, developed a set of methods to isolate the ions and photons from their environment to create a genuine quantum system. Furthermore, they also developed methods to measure and manipulate these quantum systems, which open a path not only to explore the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics, but also to develop a much faster computer: a quantum computer.

Abstract:A two-component fermion model with conventional two-body interactions was recently shown to have anyonic excitations. We here propose a scheme to physically implement this model by transforming each chain of two two-component fermions to the two capacitively coupled chains of superconducting devices. In particular, we elaborate how to achieve the wanted operations to create and manipulate the topological quantum states, providing an experimentally feasible scenario to access the topological memory and to build the anyonic interferometry.

Abstract:The critical behavior of the light-matter interactions in controllable systems provides an attractive direction for quantum manipulation. Inspired by “the broken symmetry will give rise to the quantum phase transitions (QPTs)”, the open-system QPTs of the Tavis–Cummings (TC) interactions with an extra second-order nonlinearity (SONL) are explored, where the systemic symmetry is reduced from U ( 1 ) to Z 2 . The critical behavior of a generic spins-microwave hybrid system is investigated using the standard mean-field approach in conjunction with different factors such as the SONL phase, the spins’ collective decay and dephasing, cavity dissipation, and detunings. The results show that all of the three decoherence factors and the detunings will affect its critical points, and the phase of SONL can especially exhibit a protective effect on QPTs. This study provides an encouraging example for mimicking the interesting light-matter interactions, and may further evoke some potential applications in quantum manipulations.

2022 Nobel Prize in Physics and the End of Mechanistic Materialism

Abstract:The ideas and results that are in the background of the 2022 Nobel Prize in physics had an immense impact on our understanding of reality. Therefore, it is crucial that these implications reach also the general public, not only the scientists in the related fields of quantum mechanics. The purpose of this review is to attempt to elucidate these revolutionary changes in our worldview that were eventually acknowledged also by the Nobel's committee, and to do it with very few references to mathematical details (which could be even ignored without undermining the take-away essence of the text). We first look into the foundational disputes between Einstein and Bohr about the nature of quantum mechanics, which culminated in the so-called EPR paradox -- the main impetus for all the research that would ensue in this context. Next, we try to explain the statement of the famous Bell's theorem -- the theorem that relocated the Einstain-Bohr discussions from the realm of philosophy and metaphysics to hard-core physics verifiable by experiments (we also give a brief derivation of the theorem's proof). Then we overview the experimental work of the last year's laureates, that had the final say about who was right in the debate. The outcome of these experiments forced us to profoundly revise our understanding of the universe. Finally, we discuss in more detail the implications of such outcomes, and what are the possible ways that our worldviews can be modified to account for the experimental facts. As we will see, the standard mechanist picture of the universe is no longer a viable option, and can be never again. Nowadays, we know this with certainty unusual for physics, that only a strict mathematical theorem could provide.

Abstract:Manipulation of the quantum state by the Majorana transition in spinor BECsystem has been realized by altering the rotation frequency of the magneticfield's direction. This kind of manipulation method has no limitation on thetransition speed in principle and the system is well closed, which provides anew and superior tool to manipulate quantum states. Using this methord onpulsed atom laser, multicomponent spinor atom laser is generated. Wedemonstrate that the experiment results are agreed with the theoreticalpredication.

Abstract:In this paper, a three-body hybrid quantum system with the solid-state spin and topological qubit both mediated by a torsional nanomechanical resonator (NMR) is built by taking advantage of two different coupling mechanisms, the so-called strain and the magnetism, respectively. Two basic quantum manipulation (QM) schemes with respect to the quantum interface for arbitrary-state transfer and two-qubit Mølmer–Sørensen (MS) gate are also studied here. Then the efficiency for both QM processes is also systematically estimated, even under the influence of all kinds of adverse factors such as dissipation, decoherence and dephasing. This work may provide an extensible route towards a wider range of applications in quantum manipulation.

Abstract:The atom manipulation technique based on scanning tunneling microscope refers to a method of relocating single atoms or molecules on a certain surface at atomic accuracy by using an atomically sharp tip, which is a unique and powerful tool for studying the quantum physics and prototype quantum devices on a nanometer scale. This technique allows us to build artificial structure atom-by-atom, thus some desired interesting quantum structures which are difficult to grow or fabricate by conventional methods could be realized, and unique quantum states, spin order, band structure could be created by the fine tuning of the structural parameters like lattice constant, symmetry, periodicity, etc. Combined with nanosecond scale time domain electric measurement and autonomous control technique, the atom manipulation would be useful in exploring the atomic precision prototype quantum devices, and providing some valuable knowledge for future electronics. In this review, we introduce the atom manipulation technique and related milestone research achievements and latest progress of artificial quantum structures, including electronic lattices with exotic quantum states on Cu(111), quantum dots on III-V semiconductors, magnetic structures with tunable spin order, structures for quantum information storage and processing, prototype Boolean logic devices and single atom devices. The STM lithography and autonomous atom manipulation are discussed as well. With such improvements, this technique would play more important roles in developing the functional quantum devices in future.

Abstract:A review is presented of recent research by the authors and their collaborators, including two papers published in 2005 in Physical Review Letters. The two main topics are: (1) The quantum“ Bang- Bang” control of a superconducting charge qubit is utilized to cool its coupled nano-mechanical resonator so that the ground state can be reached, by means of which the GHz oscillating nano-mechanical resonator can display the enriching quantum effect; (2)The physical realization of Δ type artificial atoms as a superconducting circuit and the exotic features of its adiabatic manipulation. To understand fully the physics and potential application in modern technology of these two topics, we also review their background relevant to the cavity quantum electrodynamics structure based solid state artificial atoms formed by superconducting circuits and the GHz oscillating nano-systems with certain strong couplings.

Abstract:Quantum information science and atom optics are among the most active fields in modern physics. In recent years, many theoretical efforts have been made to combine these two fields. Recent experimental progresses have shown the in-principle possibility to perform scalable quantum information processing (QIP) with linear optics and atomic ensembles. One of our main activities is to use atomic qubits as quantum memory and exploit photonic qubits for information transfer and processing to achieve efficient linear optics QIP. On the one hand, utilizing the interaction between laser pulses and ultra-cold atomic ensembles we experimentally investigate the potentials of atomic ensembles in the gas phase to build quantum repeaters for long-distance quantum communication, that is, to develop a new technological solution for quantum repeaters making use of the effective qubit-type entanglement of two cold atomic ensembles by a projective measurement of individual photons by spontaneous Raman processes.
Direct Manipulation of quantum entanglement from the non-Hermitian nature of light-matter interaction

Abstract:Biphoton process is an essential benchmark for quantum information science and technologies, while great efforts have been made to improve the coherence of the system for better quantum correlations. Nevertheless, we find that the non-Hermitian features induced by the atomic quantum interference could be well employed for the direct control of entanglement. We report the demonstration of exceptional point (EP) in biphotons by measuring the light-atom interaction as a natural non-Hermitian system, in which the electromagnetically induced transparency regime provides a powerful mechanism to precisely tune the non-Hermitian coupling strength. Such biphoton correlation is tuned within an unprecedented large range from Rabi oscillation to antibunching-exponential-decay, also indicating high-dimensional entanglement within the strong and weak light-matter coupling regimes. The EP at the transition point between the two regimes is clearly observed with the biphoton quantum correlation measurements, exhibiting a single exponential decay and manifesting the coalesced single eigenstate. Our results provide a unique method to realize the controllability of natural non-Hermitian processes without the assistance of artificial photonic structures, and paves the way for quantum control by manipulating the non-Hermitian features of the light-matter interaction.

Abstract:The ability to control the motion of mechanical systems through its interaction with light has opened the door to a plethora of applications in fundamental and applied physics. With experiments routinely reaching the quantum regime, the focus has now turned towards creating and exploiting interesting non-classical states of motion and entanglement in optomechanical systems. Quantumness has also shifted from being the very reason why experiments are constructed to becoming a resource for the investigation of fundamental physics and the creation of quantum technologies. Here, by focusing on opto- and electromechanical platforms we review recent progress in quantum state preparation and entanglement of mechanical systems, together with applications to signal processing and transduction, quantum sensing, topological physics, as well as small-scale thermodynamics.

Abstract:The last Nobel Prize of the Millenium in Physics has been awarded jointly to Professor Gerardus 't Hooft of the University of Utrecht in Holland and his thesis advisor Professor Emeritus Martinus J.G. Veltman of Holland. According to the Academy's citation, the Nobel Prize has been awarded for 'elucidating the quantum structure of electroweak interaction in Physics'. It further goes on to say that they have placed particle physics theory on a firmer mathematical foundation. In this short note, we will try to understand both these aspects of the award. The work for which they have been awarded the Nobel Prize was done in 1971. However, the precise predictions of properties of particles that were made possible as a result of their work, were tested to a very high degree of accuracy only in this last decade. This was done in a series of measurements in the experiments in the accelerator laboratories at CERN (Geneva) and Fermilab. To understand the full significance of this Nobel Prize, we will have to summarise briefly the developement of our current theoretical framework about the basic constituents of matter and the forces which hold them together. In fact the path can be partially traced in a chain of Nobel prizes starting from one in 1965 to S. Tomonaga, J. Schwinger and R. Feynman, to the one to S.L. Glashow, A. Salam and S. Weinberg in 1979, and then to C. Rubia and Simon van der Meer in 1984 ending with the current one.
