The Residential Mobility of Urban Danwei Residents: A Life Course Approach

Abstract:This paper focuses on the residential mobility of Danwei residents in urban China based on the in-depth interview material through the approach of life course research. From the perspective of social institutional change and individual attributes, this paper analyzes the the incentives and changes of residential mobility with the emerging of housing market. Quite different from traditional research, qualitative research method is emphasized here. It found that, the residential mobility courses among residents of Danwei were quite similar before economic system reform since 1980s, but shows highly diversity after that. The residential mobility course dominated by Danwei reveals that, the social status (administrative level and types of ownership) of Danwei and housing qualification (identity and personal achievements) determine the mobility opportunities and housing quality. With the emerging of housing market, the residential mobility is driven by requirement caused by changes in family, improvement of living environment and accessibility, and pressure of community. It found that the improvement of housing market policies, on the one hand, enhances the financial capacity of common residents to purchase the house; on the other hand, establishes more diversified supply structure to meet the needs of group with different income level.
