Abstract:A significant fraction of local galaxies show evidence of nuclear activity. I argue that the bulk of this activity, while energetically not remarkable, derives from accretion onto a central massive black hole. The statistics of nearby active galactic nuclei thus provide an effective probe of black hole demography. Consistent with the picture emerging from direct dynamical studies, the local census of nuclear activity strongly suggests that most, perhaps all, galaxies with a significant bulge component contain a central massive black hole. Although late-type galaxies appear to be generally deficient in nuclear black holes, there are important exceptions to this rule. I highlight two examples of dwarf, late-type galaxies that contain active nuclei powered by intermediate-mass black holes.

Abstract:A significant fraction of nearby galaxies show evidence of weak nuclear activity unrelated to normal stellar processes. Recent high-resolution, multiwavelength observations indicate that the bulk of this activity derives from black hole accretion with a wide range of accretion rates. The low accretion rates that typify most low-luminosity active galactic nuclei induce significant modifications to their central engine. The broad-line region and obscuring torus disappear in some of the faintest sources, and the optically thick accretion disk transforms into a three-component structure consisting of an inner radiatively inefficient accretion flow, a truncated outer thin disk, and a jet or outflow. The local census of nuclear activity supports the notion that most, perhaps all, bulges host a central supermassive black hole, although the existence of active nuclei in at least some late-type galaxies suggests that a classical bulge is not a prerequisite to seed a nuclear black hole.

Abstract:We use new central stellar velocity dispersions and nuclear X-ray and II alpha luminosities for the Palomar survey of nearby galaxies to investigate the distribution of nuclear bolometric luminosities and Eddington ratios for their central black holes (BHs). This information helps to constrain the nature of their accretion flows and the physical drivers that control the spectral diversity of nearby active galactic nuclei. The characteristic values of the bolometric luminosities and Eddington ratios, which span over 7-8 orders of magnitude, from L-bol less than or similar to 10(37) to 3 x 10(44) erg s(-1) and L-bol/L-Edd approximate to 10(-9) to 10(-1), vary systematically with nuclear spectral classification, increasing along the sequence absorption-line nuclei -> transition objects -> low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions -> Seyferts. The Eddington ratio also increases from early-type to late-type galaxies. We show that the very modest accretion rates inferred from the nuclear luminosities can be readily supplied through local mass loss from evolved stars and Bondi accretion of hot gas, without appealing to additional fueling mechanisms such as angular momentum transport on larger scales. Indeed, we argue that the fuel reservoir generated by local processes should produce far more active nuclei than is actually observed. This generic luminosity-deficit problem suggests that the radiative efficiency in these systems is much less than the canonical value of 0.1 for traditional optically thick, geometrically thin accretion disks. The observed values of L-bol/L-Edd, all substantially below unity, further support the hypothesis that massive BHs in most nearby galaxies reside in a low or quiescent state, sustained by accretion through a radiatively inefficient mode.
The complete census of optically selected AGNs in the Coma Supercluster: the dependence of AGN activity on the local environment

Abstract:To investigate the dependence of the occurrence of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) on local galaxy density, we study the nuclear properties of ~5000 galaxies in the Coma Supercluster whose density spans 2 orders of magnitude from the sparse filaments to the cores of the rich clusters. We obtained optical spectra of the nuclei of 177 galaxies using the 1.5m Cassini telescope, which are added to the 4785 spectra available from SDSS (DR7) to fill-in the incomplete coverage by SDSS of luminous galaxies. We perform a spectral classification of the nuclei of galaxies (with a completeness of 98% at r<17.77), classifying the nuclear spectra in six classes: three of them (SEY, sAGN, LIN) refer to AGNs and the remaining three (HII, RET, PAS) refer to different stages of starburst activity. To perform such classification, we use the WHAN diagnostic, after correcting Halpha by 1.3 A for underlying absorption. We find that 482 (10%) of 5027 galaxies host an AGN: their frequency strongly increases with increasing luminosity of the parent galaxies, such that 32% of galaxies with Log(i-Lum)<10.2 (Solar) harbor an AGN at their interior. In addition to their presence in luminous galaxies, AGNs are also found in red galaxies with <g-i> < 1.15 \pm 0.15 mag. The majority of SEY and sAGN (strong AGNs) are associated with luminous late-type (or S0a) galaxies, while LIN (weak AGNs) and RET ("retired"), are mostly found among E/S0as. The number density of AGNs, HII region-like, and retired galaxies is found to anti-correlate with the local density of galaxies, such that their frequency drops by a factor of two near the cluster cores, while the frequency of galaxies containing passive nuclei increases by the same amount towards the center of rich clusters. The dependence of AGN number density on the local galaxy density is greater than the one implied by morphology segregation alone.

AGNs and Starbursts: What Is the Real Connection?

Abstract:It is now widely believed that the growth of massive black holes is closely linked to the formation of galaxies, but there have been few concrete constraints on the actual physical processes responsible for this coupling. Investigating the connection between AGN and starburst activity may offer some empirical guidance on this problem. I summarize previous observational searches for young stars in active galaxies, concluding that there is now compelling evidence for a significant post-starburst population in many luminous AGNs, and that a direct, causal link may exist between star formation and black hole accretion. Quantifying the ongoing star formation rate in AGNs, however, is much more challenging because of the strong contamination by the active nucleus. I discuss recent work attempting to measure the star formation rate in luminous AGNs and quasars. The exceptionally low level of coeval star formation found in these otherwise gas-rich systems suggests that the star formation efficiency in the host galaxies is suppressed in the presence of strong AGN feedback.

Abstract:From a Chandra sample of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in nearby galaxies, we find that for low-luminosity AGNs, either the intrinsic absorption column density, or the fraction of absorbed AGNs, positively scales with the Eddington ratio for Lbol/LEdd ≲ 10−2. Such a behavior, along with the softness of the X-ray spectrum at low luminosities, is in good agreement with the picture that they are powered by hot accretion flows surrounding supermassive black holes. Numerical simulations find that outflows are inevitable with hot accretion flows, and the outflow rate is correlated with the innermost accretion rate in the low-luminosity regime. This agrees well with our results, suggesting that the X-ray absorption originates from, or is associated with, the outflow material. Gas and dust on larger scales may also produce the observed correlation. Future correlation analyses may help differentiate the two scenarios.
The formation of bulges and black holes: lessons from a census of active galaxies in the SDSS

Abstract:We examine the relationship between galaxies, supermassive black holes and AGN using a sample of 22,000 narrow-emission-line AGN drawn from a a sample of 122,000 galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We have studied how AGN host properties compare with those of normal galaxies and how they depend on the luminosity of the active nucleus. We find that AGN reside in massive galaxies and have distributions of sizes and concentrations that are similar to those of the early-type galaxies in our sample. The host galaxies of low-luminosity AGN have stellar populations similar to normal early-types. The hosts of high-luminosity AGN have much younger mean stellar ages and a significant fraction have experienced recent starbursts. High-luminosity AGN are also found in lower density environments. We use the stellar velocity dispersions of the AGN hosts to estimate black hole masses and their [OIII]$\lambda$5007 emission line luminosities to estimate black hole accretion rates. We find that the volume averaged ratio of star formation to black hole accretion is ~1000, in remarkable agreement with the observed ratio of stellar mass to black hole mass in nearby bulges. Our estimated accretion rates imply that low mass black holes are growing on a timescale that is comparable to the age of the Universe. The growth timescale increases by more than an order of magnitude for the most massive black holes in our sample. We conclude that the evolution of the AGN luminosity function is driven by a decrease in the characteristic mass scale of actively accreting black holes.

Abstract:AGN feedback is believed to play an important role in shaping a variety of observed galaxy properties, as well as the evolution of their stellar masses and star formation rates. In particular, in the current theoretical paradigm of galaxy formation, AGN feedback is believed to play a crucial role in regulating the levels of activity in galaxies, in relatively massive halos at low redshift. Only in recent years, however, has detailed statistical information on the dependence of galaxy activity on stellar mass, parent halo mass and hierarchy has become available. In this paper, we compare the fractions of galaxies belonging to different activity classes (star-forming, AGN and radio active) with predictions from four different and independently developed semi-analytical models. We adopt empirical relations to convert physical properties into observables (H_alpha emission lines, OIII line strength and radio power). We demonstrate that all models used in this study reproduce the overall distributions of galaxies belonging to different activity classes as a function of stellar mass and halo mass: star forming galaxies and the strongest radio sources are preferentially associated with low-mass and high-mass galaxies/halos respectively. However, model predictions differ from observational measurements in a number of ways. All models used in our study predict that almost every >1.e12 Msun dark matter halo and/or >1.e11 Msun galaxy should host a bright radio source, while only a small fraction of galaxies belong to this class in the data. In addition, radio brightness is expected to depend strongly on the mass of the parent halo mass in the models, while strong and weak radio galaxies are found in similar environments in data. Our results highlight that the distribution of AGN as a function of stellar mass provides one of the most promising discriminants between different gas accretion schemes.
A Radio Census of Nuclear Activity in Nearby Galaxies

Abstract:Received XX; accepted XX Abstract. In order to determine the incidence of black hole accretion-driven nuclear activity in nearby galax- ies, as manifested by their radio emission, we have carried out a high-resolution Multi-Element Radio-Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) survey of LINERs and composite LINER/Hii galaxies from a complete magnitude-limited sample of bright nearby galaxies (Palomar sample) with unknown arcsecond-scale radio proper- ties. There are fifteen radio detections, of which three are new subarcsecond-scale radio core detections, all being candidate AGN. The detected galaxies supplement the already known low-luminosity AGN - low-luminosity Seyferts, LINERs and composite LINER/Hii galaxies - in the Palomar sample. Combining all radio-detected Seyferts, LINERs and composite LINER/Hii galaxies (LTS sources), we obtain an overall radio detection rate of 54% (22% of all bright nearby galaxies) and we estimate that at least �50% (�20% of all bright nearby galaxies) are true AGN. The radio powers of the LTS galaxies allow the construction of a local radio luminosity function. By comparing the luminosity function with those of selected moderate-redshift AGN, selected from the 2dF/NVSS survey, we find that LTS sources naturally extend the RLF of powerful AGN down to powers of about 10 times that of Sgr A*.
A Census of Broad-Line Active Galactic Nuclei in Nearby Galaxies: Coeval Star Formation and Rapid Black Hole Growth

Abstract:We present the first quantified, statistical map of broad-line active galactic nucleus (AGN) frequency with host galaxy color and stellar mass in nearby (0.01 < z < 0.11) galaxies. Aperture photometry and z-band concentration measurements from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) are used to dis- entangle AGN and galaxy emission, resulting in estimates of uncontaminated galaxy rest-frame color, luminosity, and stellar mass. Broad-line AGNs are distributed throughout the blue cloud and green valley at a given stellar mass, and are much rarer in quiescent (red sequence) galaxies. This is in contrast to the published host galaxy properties of weaker narrow-line AGNs, indicating that broad-line AGNs occur during a different phase in galaxy evolution. More luminous broad-line AGNs have bluer host galaxies, even at fixed mass, suggesting that the same processes that fuel nuclear activity also efficiently form stars. The data favor processes that simultaneously fuel both star formation activity and rapid supermassive black hole accretion. If AGNs cause feedback on their host galaxies in the nearby universe, the evidence of galaxy-wide quenching must be delayed until after the broad-line AGN phase.

The Interplay Between Star Formation and Black Hole Accretion in Nearby Active Galaxies

Abstract:Black hole accretion is widely thought to influence star formation in galaxies, but the empirical evidence for a physical correlation between star formation rate (SFR) and the properties of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) remain highly controversial. We take advantage of a recently developed SFR estimator based on the [O ii] λ3727 and [O iii] λ5007 emission lines to investigate the SFRs of the host galaxies of more than 5800 type-1 and 7600 type-2 AGNs with z < 0.35. After matching in luminosity and redshift, we find that type-1 and type-2 AGNs have a similar distribution of internal reddening, which is significant and corresponds to ∼109 M⊙ of cold molecular gas. In spite of their comparable gas content, type-2 AGNs, independent of stellar mass, Eddington ratio, redshift or molecular gas mass, exhibit intrinsically stronger star formation activity than type-1 AGNs, in apparent disagreement with the conventional AGN unified model. We observe a tight, linear relation between AGN luminosity (accretion rate) and SFR, one that becomes more significant toward smaller physical scales, suggesting that the link between the AGN and star formation occurs in the central kpc-scale region. This, along with a correlation between SFR and Eddington ratio in the regime of super-Eddington accretion, can be interpreted as evidence that star formation is impacted by positive feedback from the AGN.

Abstract:We have analysed the clustering of similar to 90 000 narrow-line active galactic nuclei (AGN) drawn from the Data Release 4 (DR4) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Our analysis addresses the following questions. (i) How do the locations of galaxies within the large-scale distribution of dark matter influence ongoing accretion on to their central black holes ? (ii) Is AGN activity triggered by interactions or mergers between galaxies ? We compute the cross-correlation between AGN and a reference sample of galaxies drawn from the DR4. We compare this to results for control samples of inactive galaxies matched simultaneously in redshift, stellar mass, concentration, velocity dispersion and mean stellar age, as measured by the 4000-angstrom break strength. We also compare near-neighbour counts around AGN and around the control galaxies. On scales larger than a few Mpc, AGN have almost the same clustering amplitude as the control sample. This demonstrates that AGN host galaxies and inactive control galaxies populate dark matter haloes of similar mass. On scales between 100 kpc and 1 Mpc, AGN are clustered more weakly than the control galaxies. We use mock catalogues constructed from high-resolution N-body simulations to interpret this antibias, showing that the observed effect is easily understood if AGN are preferentially located at the centres of their dark matter haloes. On scales less than 70 kpc, AGN cluster marginally more strongly than the control sample, but the effect is weak. When compared to the control sample, we find that only one in 100 AGN has an extra neighbour within a radius of 70 kpc. This excess increases as a function of the accretion rate on to the black hole, but it does not rise above the few per cent level. Although interactions between galaxies may be responsible for triggering nuclear activity in a minority of nearby AGN, some other mechanism is required to explain the activity seen in the majority of the objects in our sample.
Black Hole Accretion Correlates With Star Formation Rate And Star Formation Efficiency In Nearby Luminous Type 1 Active Galaxies

Abstract:We investigate the relationship between black hole accretion and star formation in a sample of 453 z 0.3 type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We use available CO observations to demonstrate that the combination of nebular dust extinction and metallicity provides reliable estimates of the molecular gas mass even for the host galaxies of type 1 AGNs. Consistent with other similar but significantly smaller samples, we reaffirm the notion that powerful AGNs have comparable gas content as nearby star-forming galaxies and that AGN feedback does not deplete the host of cold gas instantaneously. We demonstrate that while the strong correlation between star formation rate and black hole accretion rate is in part driven by the mutual dependence of these parameters on molecular gas mass, the star formation rate and black hole accretion rate are still weakly correlated after removing the dependence of star formation rate on molecular gas mass. This, together with a positive correlation between star formation efficiency and black hole accretion rate, may be interpreted as evidence for positive AGN feedback.
Evolution of accretion disks around massive black holes: constraints from the demography of active galactic nuclei

Abstract:Observations have shown that the Eddington ratios (the ratio of the bolometric luminosity to the Eddington luminosity) in QSOs/active galactic nuclei (AGNs) cover a wide range. In this paper we connect the demography of AGNs obtained by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey with the accretion physics around massive black holes and propose that the diversity in the Eddington ratios is a natural result of the long-term evolution of accretion disks in AGNs. The observed accretion rate distribution of AGNs (with host galaxy velocity dispersion sigma~70-200 km/s) in the nearby universe (z<0.3) is consistent with the predictions of simple theoretical models in which the accretion rates evolve in a self-similar way. We also discuss the implications of the results for the issues related to self-gravitating disks, coevolution of galaxies and QSOs/AGNs, and the unification picture of AGNs.

Black Hole Accretion in Low-Mass Galaxies Since Z Similar to 1

Abstract:We have selected a sample of X-ray-emitting active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in low-mass host galaxies (similar to 5 x 10(9)-2 x 10(10) M-circle dot) out to z similar to 1. By comparing to AGNs in more massive hosts, we have found that the AGN spatial number density and the fraction of galaxies hosting AGNs depends strongly on the host mass, with the AGN host mass function peaking at intermediate mass and with the AGN fraction increasing with host mass. AGNs in low-mass hosts show strong cosmic evolution in comoving number density, the fraction of such galaxies hosting active nuclei, and the comoving X-ray energy density. The integrated X-ray luminosity function is used to estimate the amount of the accreted black hole mass in these AGNs and places a strong lower limit of 12% to the fraction of local low-mass galaxies hosting black holes, although a more likely value is probably much higher (>50%) once the heavily obscured objects missed in current X-ray surveys are accounted for.

Abstract:Detecting the seed black holes from which quasars formed is extremely challenging; however, those seeds that did not grow into supermassive should be found as intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) of 100-10$^5$ M$_{\odot}$ in local dwarf galaxies. The use of deep multiwavelength surveys has revealed that a population of actively accreting IMBHs (low-mass AGN) exists in dwarf galaxies at least out to $z\sim$3. The black hole occupation fraction of these galaxies suggests that the early Universe seed black holes formed from direct collapse of gas, which is reinforced by the possible flattening of the black hole-galaxy scaling relations at the low-mass end. This scenario is however challenged by the finding that AGN feedback can have a strong impact on dwarf galaxies, which implies that low-mass AGN in dwarf galaxies might not be the untouched relics of the early seed black holes. This has important implications for seed black hole formation models.

Abstract:Spin-wave instability for parallel pumping is studied theoretically. The spin-wave instability threshold is calculated in ferromagnetic thin films under oblique field which has an oblique angle to the film plane. The butterfly curve of the threshold usually has a cusp at a certain value of the static external field. While the static field value of the cusp point varies as the oblique angle changes, the general properties of the butterfly curve show little noteworthy change. For very thin films, however, multiple cusps of the butterfly curve can appear due to different standing spin-wave modes, which indicate a novel feature for thin films under oblique field.
