Abstract:To investigate the dependence of the occurrence of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) on local galaxy density, we study the nuclear properties of ~5000 galaxies in the Coma Supercluster whose density spans 2 orders of magnitude from the sparse filaments to the cores of the rich clusters. We obtained optical spectra of the nuclei of 177 galaxies using the 1.5m Cassini telescope, which are added to the 4785 spectra available from SDSS (DR7) to fill-in the incomplete coverage by SDSS of luminous galaxies. We perform a spectral classification of the nuclei of galaxies (with a completeness of 98% at r<17.77), classifying the nuclear spectra in six classes: three of them (SEY, sAGN, LIN) refer to AGNs and the remaining three (HII, RET, PAS) refer to different stages of starburst activity. To perform such classification, we use the WHAN diagnostic, after correcting Halpha by 1.3 A for underlying absorption. We find that 482 (10%) of 5027 galaxies host an AGN: their frequency strongly increases with increasing luminosity of the parent galaxies, such that 32% of galaxies with Log(i-Lum)<10.2 (Solar) harbor an AGN at their interior. In addition to their presence in luminous galaxies, AGNs are also found in red galaxies with <g-i> < 1.15 \pm 0.15 mag. The majority of SEY and sAGN (strong AGNs) are associated with luminous late-type (or S0a) galaxies, while LIN (weak AGNs) and RET ("retired"), are mostly found among E/S0as. The number density of AGNs, HII region-like, and retired galaxies is found to anti-correlate with the local density of galaxies, such that their frequency drops by a factor of two near the cluster cores, while the frequency of galaxies containing passive nuclei increases by the same amount towards the center of rich clusters. The dependence of AGN number density on the local galaxy density is greater than the one implied by morphology segregation alone.

Abstract:Between 1984 and 1990 we conducted a survey at Palomar Observatory (Filippenko and Sargent 1985) to quantify the luminosity function of nearby active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The Hale 5 m telescope was used to obtain high-quality, moderate-resolution optical spectra of a nearly statistically complete sample of about 500 bright (BT ≤ 12.5 mag), northern (δ > 0°) galaxies (see Ho et al. 1995 for details). The survey has now been completed, and the first scientific results are reported in a series of papers by Ho et al. (1997a, b, c).
Towards a Complete Census of AGNs in Nearby Galaxies: A Large Population of Optically Unidentified AGNs

Abstract:Using Spitzer-IRS spectroscopy, we investigate the ubiquity of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in a complete (~94%), volume-limited sample of the most bolometrically-luminous galaxies (L_IR > (0.3-20) x 10^10 L_sun) to D < 15 Mpc. Our analyses are based on the detection of the high-excitation emission line [NeV](\lambda 14.32 um; 97.1 eV) to unambiguously identify AGN activity. We find that 17 of the 64 IR-bright galaxies in our sample host AGN activity (~27^{+8}_{-6}%), >50% of which are not identified as AGNs using optical spectroscopy. The large AGN fraction indicates a tighter connection between AGN activity and IR luminosity for galaxies in the local Universe than previously found, potentially indicating a close association between AGN activity and star formation. The optically unidentified AGNs span a wide range of galaxy type (S0-Ir) and are typically starburst-dominated systems hosting modest-luminosity AGN activity (L_[NeV] ~ 10^37 - 10^39 erg s^-1). The non-identification of optical AGN signatures in the majority of these galaxies appears to be due to extinction towards the AGN, rather than intrinsically low-luminosity AGN activity. Examination of optical images shows that the optically unidentified AGNs with evidence for extinction are hosted in either highly inclined galaxies or galaxies with dust lanes, indicating that obscuration of the AGN is not necessarily due to an obscuring torus. We therefore conclude that optical spectroscopic surveys miss approximately half of the AGN population simply due to extinction through the host galaxy.

A Radio Census of Nuclear Activity in Nearby Galaxies

Abstract:Received XX; accepted XX Abstract. In order to determine the incidence of black hole accretion-driven nuclear activity in nearby galax- ies, as manifested by their radio emission, we have carried out a high-resolution Multi-Element Radio-Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) survey of LINERs and composite LINER/Hii galaxies from a complete magnitude-limited sample of bright nearby galaxies (Palomar sample) with unknown arcsecond-scale radio proper- ties. There are fifteen radio detections, of which three are new subarcsecond-scale radio core detections, all being candidate AGN. The detected galaxies supplement the already known low-luminosity AGN - low-luminosity Seyferts, LINERs and composite LINER/Hii galaxies - in the Palomar sample. Combining all radio-detected Seyferts, LINERs and composite LINER/Hii galaxies (LTS sources), we obtain an overall radio detection rate of 54% (22% of all bright nearby galaxies) and we estimate that at least �50% (�20% of all bright nearby galaxies) are true AGN. The radio powers of the LTS galaxies allow the construction of a local radio luminosity function. By comparing the luminosity function with those of selected moderate-redshift AGN, selected from the 2dF/NVSS survey, we find that LTS sources naturally extend the RLF of powerful AGN down to powers of about 10 times that of Sgr A*.

Abstract:AbstractThe great amount of data observed in recent years coupled with modelling using evolutionary synthesis codes (BPASS, COELHO, GALAXEV, GALEV, MILES, PÉGASE, etc. . .) to compute Single Stellar Populations (SSPs) and the availability of fast and ingenious spectral synthesis codes such asstarlight, ULySS and VESPA, have significantly shed light on our knowledge about the formation and evolution of galaxies. However, there are still open issues concerning the stellar populations in nearby galaxies, particularly those harbouring Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN): can stellar populations mimic nuclear activity, leading to a misclassification based on optical emission line ratios (Stasińskaet al. 2008)? We have applied thestarlightcode (Cid Fernandeset al. 2005) to a well studied sample of nearby galaxies' nuclear spectra (r < ~ 200 pc), observed with the Hale 5 m telescope at Palomar Observatory in two different regions: ~ 4230-5110 Å and ~ 6210-6860 Å (Hoet al. 1995), with spectral resolutions of approximately 4 Å, and 2.5 Å. The aim is to properly derive the star-formation history (SFH), mean stellar age and metallicity and total stellar mass. Our results show that the star-formation history of Seyfert galaxies are very heterogeneous, i.e. these are composed of young, intermediate and old stellar populations, while the SFH of Low-Ionization Nuclear Emission-Line Regions (LINERs) are basically composed of old stellar populations. The absence of young stars in LINERs indicates that these are not responsible for the observed low-ionization emission lines. Furthermore, although a significant fraction of AGN spectra require a featureless continuum in their Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) modelling, this is not an indicative of the presence of an AGN, instead the continuum may simulate the presence of young stellar populations. The main objective of this research is to complement the study of spectroscopic parameters from 486 galaxies analyzed by Hoet al. (1995) that are public available in the VizieR catalog (Hoet al. 1997, 2009) and provide information about their stellar population content by means of thestarlight. The base of Simple Stellar Populations used here was taken from Bruzual & Charlot (2003) and spans 25 ages (from 1 Myr to 18 Gyr) and 6 metallicities (Z = 0.005, 0.02, 0.2, 0.4, 1 & 2.5Z⊙).
X-Ray Emitting Active Galactic Nuclei from z = 0.6-1.3 in the Intermediate and High-Density Environments of the ORELSE Survey

Abstract:We studied AGN activity in twelve LSSs in the ORELSE survey, at 0.65<z<1.28, using a combination of Chandra observations, optical and NIR imaging and spectroscopy. We located a total of 61 AGNs across our sample that were successfully matched to optical counterparts in the LSSs. Seeking to study AGN triggering mechanisms, we examined the spatial distribution of the AGNs and their average spectral properties. We found that AGN populations across our sample had less time since the last starburst than the overall galaxy populations. We did not find any relation between AGN activity and location within the LSSs, suggesting triggering mechanisms which depend on global environment are at most sub-dominant. To focus on differences between our AGNs, we grouped them into four sub-samples based on the spectral properties of their parents LSSs. We found one of the sub-samples, SG0023 & SC1604, stood out from the others: AGNs in this sample were disproportionately luminous, their average time since the last starburst event was the smallest, despite the fact that this was not true of the overall galaxy population in those LSSs, and both the AGNs and the overall galaxy population had the largest fraction of close kinematic pairs, which indicates a higher rate of galaxy mergers and interactions. These results suggest that major mergers are driving AGN activity in SG0023 & SC1604, while other processes are likely triggering less luminous AGNs in the rest of our sample. Additionally, minor mergers are unlikely to play a significant role, since the same conditions that lead to more major mergers should should also lead to more minor mergers, which is not observed in SG0023 & SC1604.

Abstract:AGN feedback is believed to play an important role in shaping a variety of observed galaxy properties, as well as the evolution of their stellar masses and star formation rates. In particular, in the current theoretical paradigm of galaxy formation, AGN feedback is believed to play a crucial role in regulating the levels of activity in galaxies, in relatively massive halos at low redshift. Only in recent years, however, has detailed statistical information on the dependence of galaxy activity on stellar mass, parent halo mass and hierarchy has become available. In this paper, we compare the fractions of galaxies belonging to different activity classes (star-forming, AGN and radio active) with predictions from four different and independently developed semi-analytical models. We adopt empirical relations to convert physical properties into observables (H_alpha emission lines, OIII line strength and radio power). We demonstrate that all models used in this study reproduce the overall distributions of galaxies belonging to different activity classes as a function of stellar mass and halo mass: star forming galaxies and the strongest radio sources are preferentially associated with low-mass and high-mass galaxies/halos respectively. However, model predictions differ from observational measurements in a number of ways. All models used in our study predict that almost every >1.e12 Msun dark matter halo and/or >1.e11 Msun galaxy should host a bright radio source, while only a small fraction of galaxies belong to this class in the data. In addition, radio brightness is expected to depend strongly on the mass of the parent halo mass in the models, while strong and weak radio galaxies are found in similar environments in data. Our results highlight that the distribution of AGN as a function of stellar mass provides one of the most promising discriminants between different gas accretion schemes.
Are Active Galactic Nuclei in Post-Starburst Galaxies Driving the Change or Along for the Ride?

Abstract:We present an analysis of 10 ks snapshot Chandra observations of 12 shocked post-starburst galaxies, which provide a window into the unresolved question of active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity in post-starburst galaxies and its role in the transition of galaxies from actively star forming to quiescence. While 7/12 galaxies have statistically significant detections (with 2 more marginal detections), the brightest only obtained 10 photons. Given the wide variety of hardness ratios in this sample, we chose to pursue a forward modeling approach to constrain the intrinsic luminosity and obscuration of these galaxies rather than stacking. We constrain intrinsic luminosity of obscured power-laws based on the total number of counts and spectral shape, itself mostly set by the obscuration, with hardness ratios consistent with the data. We also tested thermal models. While all the galaxies have power-law models consistent with their observations, a third of the galaxies are better fit as an obscured power-law and another third are better fit as thermal emission. If these post-starburst galaxies, early in their transition, contain AGN, then these are mostly confined to a lower obscuration ($n_H \leq10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$) and lower luminosity ($L_{2-10~ \rm keV}\leq10^{42}$erg s$^{-1}$). Two galaxies, however, are clearly best fit as significantly obscured AGN. At least half of this sample show evidence of at least low luminosity AGN activity, though none could radiatively drive out the remaining molecular gas reservoirs. Therefore, these AGN are more likely along for the ride, having been fed gas by the same processes driving the transition.

Abstract:We use the sample of emission-line nuclei derived from a recently completed optical spectroscopic survey of nearby galaxies to quantify the incidence of local (z approximate to 0) nuclear activity. Particular attention is paid to obtaining accurate measurements of the emission lines and reliable spectral classifications. The resulting database contains the largest collection of star-forming nuclei and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) currently known for nearby galaxies. It consists of 420 emission-line nuclei detected from a nearly complete, magnitude-limited sample of 486 galaxies with B-T less than or equal to 12.5 mag and declination greater than 0 degrees; the equivalent width detection limit of the brightest emission line, usually H alpha, is similar to 0.25 Angstrom.As is consistent with previous studies, we find detectable amounts of ionized gas in the central few hundred parsecs of most galaxies (86%); emission lines are present in essentially every spiral galaxy and in a large fraction of ellipticals and lenticulars. Based on their narrow-line spectra, half of the objects can be classified as H II or star-forming nuclei and the other half as some form of AGN, of which we distinguish three classes: Seyfert nuclei, low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions (LINERs), and transition objects that we assume to be composite LINER/H II-nucleus systems. The population of AGNs is consequently very large; approximately 43% of the galaxies in our survey can be regarded as ''active,'' although, for a number of reasons, this fraction is still rather uncertain. Most of the objects have much lower luminosities than commonly studied AGNs; the median luminosity of the narrow H alpha line, after correcting for extinction, is only 2 x 10(39) ergs s(-1). Our sample therefore occupies the extreme faint end of the AGN luminosity function.We detect signatures of a broad-line region, as revealed by visible broad H alpha emission, in similar to 20% of the AGN sample. Seyfert nuclei, both type 1 and type 2, reside in similar to 10% of all galaxies. LINERs make up the bulk (1/2-3/4) of the AGN population and a significant fraction (1/5-1/3) of all galaxies. A nonnegligible subset of LINERs emit broad H alpha emission, furnishing direct evidence that a least some LINERs are indeed physically related to the AGN phenomenon.The dominant ionization mechanism of the nuclear emission depends strongly on the morphological type and luminosity of the host galaxy. AGNs are found predominantly in luminous, early-type (E-Sbc) galaxies, while H II nuclei prefer less luminous, late-type (Sbc and later) systems. The various AGN subclasses have broadly similar host galaxies.
AGN populations in the local Universe: Their alignment with the main sequence, stellar population characteristics, accretion efficiency, and the impact of AGN feedback

Abstract:In this study, we used a sample of 338 galaxies ---within the redshift range of $ 0.02<z<0.1$ drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)--- for which there are available classifications based on their emission line ratios. We identified and selected Compton-thick (CT) AGN through the use of X-ray and infrared luminosities at $12\ m$. We constructed the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for all sources and fit them using the CIGALE code to derive properties related to both the AGN and host galaxies. Employing stringent criteria to ensure the reliability of SED measurements, our final sample comprises 14 CT AGN, 118 Seyfert 2 (Sy2), 82 composite, and 124 low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions (LINER) galaxies. Our analysis reveals that, irrespective of their classification, the majority of the sources lie below the star-forming main sequence (MS). Additionally, a lower level of AGN activity is associated with a closer positioning to the MS. Using the D$_n$4000 spectral index as a proxy for the age of stellar populations, we observe that, compared to other AGN classes, LINERs exhibit the oldest stellar populations. Conversely, CT sources are situated in galaxies with the youngest stellar populations. Furthermore, LINER and composite galaxies tend to show the lowest accretion efficiency, while CT AGN, on average, display the most efficient accretion among the four AGN populations. Our findings are consistent with a scenario in which the different AGN populations might not originate from the same AGN activity burst. Early triggers in gas-rich environments can create high-accretion-rate supermassive black holes (SMBHs), leading to a progression from CT to Sy2, while later triggers in gas-poor stages result in low-accretion-rate SMBHs like those found in LINERs.

A Spectroscopic Survey of Nearby Galactic Nuclei

Abstract:An optical spectroscopic survey of the nuclei of a magnitude-limited (BT 0 degrees) sample of nearby galaxies was completed to investigate a number of problems related to nuclear activity. Long-slit spectra of exceptionally high quality were obtained using the Hale 5 m telescope at Palomar Observatory for nearby 500 galaxies spanning all morphological types. The data have moderate resolution (2.5-4 A) and cover the wavelength regions 4230-5110 A and 6210-6860 A. After careful subtraction of the stellar light, emission lines with a wide range of intensities and excitation patterns were detected in ~85% of the nuclei. The relative intensity ratios of the emission lines in approximately half the cases (H II nuclei) can be explained by photoionization by young stars, while those in the other half (Seyfert nuclei and LINERs) require excitation by a source of more energetic photons, most likely originating from an active galactic nucleus (AGN). The most important results from the survey include the following. (1) LINERs are extremely common, being present in 1/3 of all galaxies, and they show a clear preference for galaxies of early Hubble types (E thorugh Sb). (2) If all LINERs are powered by nonstellar activity, then nearly half (46%) of all galaxies host active nuclei. (3) At least 10% of all nuclei were found to emit broad H-alpha emission qualitatively similar to the broad-line emission seen in classical Seyfert 1 nuclei and QSOs. This implies that the space density of AGNs in the current epoch is much larger than previously thought. (4) The presence of a bar has a negligible effect on the incidence and strength of nonstellar activity, but it appears to have a pronounced impact on nuclear star formation for some spiral galaxies. Among spirals of early Hubble types (S0-Sbc), bars enhance the probability of nuclear star formation as well as the ratio in which the massive stars form. (5) The spectroscopic properties of H II regions in the nuclear regions of galaxies change systematically with Hubble type. Nuclear H II regions also distinguish themselves from disk H II regions by emitting on average stronger low-ionization emission lines. This behavior can be understood most simply by the effects of higher dust content in galaxy nuclei. To aid in the interpretation of the data, a new set of photoionization models was calculated to predict the behavior of the optical and near-infrared emission-line spectrum under a variety of physical conditions appropriate for Seyfert nuclei and LINERs. Photoionization by a nonstellar ionizing continuum with a low ionization parameter can consistently explain the optical to near-infrared spectroscopic properties of most LINERs. Finally, a multiwavelength (radio to X-ray) analysis was performed on the LINER nucleus of M81. Spectra taken with the Hubble Space Telescope unambiguously detected a featureless, power-law, nonstellar continuum extending from optical to ultraviolet wavelengths. Numerous broad emission lines characteristic of Seyfert 1 nuclei were also found. It was possible to deduce for the first time a number of detailed properties concerning the central engine, the spectral energy distribution, and the regions emitting broad and narrow lines.
The properties of AGN in dwarf galaxies identified via SED fitting

Abstract:ABSTRACT Given their dominance of the galaxy number density, dwarf galaxies are central to our understanding of galaxy formation. While the incidence of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and their impact on galaxy evolution have been extensively studied in massive galaxies, much less is known about the role of AGN in the evolution of dwarfs. We search for radiatively efficient AGN in the nearby (0.1 < z < 0.3) dwarf (108 M⊙ < M⋆ < 1010 M⊙) population, using spectral energy distribution fitting (via prospector) applied to deep ultraviolet to mid-infrared photometry of 508 dwarf galaxies. Around a third (32 ± 2 per cent) of our dwarfs show signs of AGN activity. We compare the properties of our dwarf AGN to control samples, constructed from non-AGN, which have the same distributions of redshift and stellar mass as their AGN counterparts. Kolmogorov–Smirnov tests between the AGN and control distributions indicate that the AGN do not show differences in their distances to nodes, filaments, and nearby massive galaxies from their control counterparts. This indicates that AGN triggering in the dwarf regime is not strongly correlated with local environment. The fraction of AGN hosts with early-type morphology and those that are interacting are also indistinguishable from the controls within the uncertainties, suggesting that interactions do not play a significant role in inducing AGN activity in our sample. Finally, the star formation activity in dwarf AGN is only slightly lower than that in their control counterparts, suggesting that the presence of radiatively efficient AGN does not lead to significant, prompt quenching of star formation in these systems.

AGNs in Small Galaxy Systems: comparing the main properties of active objects in pairs, triplets and groups

Abstract:We perform a comparative study of AGNs in pairs, triplets and groups. To this end we use the Duplancic et al. catalogue of small galaxy systems and consider BPT and WHAN diagnostic diagrams to select optical AGNs. Also we identify mid-IR AGNs by using WISE data. We performed a comparison between the different AGN classification methodologies and study the AGN fraction in pairs, triplets, and groups with four to six members. We also analyse the main properties of Optical and mid-IR AGN hosts and the influence of environment on the active nuclei phenomena in these small galaxy systems. Our results show that, regardless the specifically adopted classification scheme, the fraction of AGN in pairs and triplets is always higher than the corresponding fraction in groups. Moreover, the fraction of powerful AGNs in pair and triplets is about twice the fraction of regular AGNs. We also find a remarkable difference between Optical and mid-IR AGNs in groups, where host galaxies of WISE AGNs are less massive and concentrated, with young stellar populations and blue colours. Also all WISE AGNs in groups have a very close companions and reside in an intermediate global density environment. Galaxy triplets show a larger AGN fraction for galaxies with a close nearest neighbours, while pairs present a nearly constant AGN fraction regardless the distance to the nearest companion. Our studies highlight the important role of interactions, besides the global environment dependence, in the activation of the AGN phenomenon in small galaxy systems.

AGN in the CALIFA survey: X-ray detection of nuclear sources

Abstract:A complete demographic of active galactic nuclei (AGN) is essential to understand the evolution of the Universe. Optical surveys estimate the population of AGN in the local Universe to be of $\sim$ 4%. However, these results could be biased towards bright sources, not affected by the host galaxy attenuation. An alternative method for detecting these objects is through the X-ray emission. In this work, we aim to complement the AGN population of the optical CALIFA survey (941 sources), by using X-ray data from Chandra, which provides the best spatial resolution to date, essential to isolate the nuclear emission from the host galaxy. We study a total of 138 sources with available data. We find 34 new bonafide AGN and 23 AGN candidates, which could increase the AGN population to 7-10\% among the CALIFA survey. X-rays are particularly useful for low-luminosity AGN since they are excluded by the criterion of large equivalent width of the $H\alpha$ emission line when applied to optical selections. Indeed, placing such a restrictive criteria might cause a loss of up to 70% of AGN sources. X-ray detected sources are preferentially located in the right side of the [$OIII$]/$H\beta$ versus [$NII$]/$H\alpha$ diagram, suggesting that this diagram might be the most reliable at classifying AGN sources. Our results support the idea that multi-wavelength studies are the best way to obtain a complete AGN population.

Spatially resolved analysis of Stellar Populations in NGC 2992: Impact of AGN feedback

Abstract:In NGC 2992, a galaxy-scale ionized gas outflow driven by AGN has long been recognized, yet its impact on the host galaxy has remained elusive. In this paper, we utilize data from the archival Very Large Telescope (VLT)/MUSE to present a spatially resolved analysis of stellar populations in this galaxy. Two different stellar population templates are employed to fit the stellar continuum, allowing us to determine the light-weighted stellar age, metallicity, the fraction of the young stellar population (age $<100$ Myr, $P_{\rm Y}$), and the average age and metallicity of $P_{\rm Y}$. Our results reveal the presence of a very young stellar population ($\leq40$ Myr) within the dust lane and nearly along the galaxy's major axis. The light-weighted stellar age and the fraction of $P_{\rm Y}$ show negative trends along the major and minor axes. The average age and metallicity of $P_{\rm Y}$ present positive trends with increasing distance, except along the northern direction of the major axis. Within the circumnuclear region ($<1$ kpc), the distribution of the young stellar population is spatially anti-correlated with the AGN outflow cone. The highest fraction of $P_{\rm Y}$ is observed at the outskirts of the nuclear radio bubble in the northern region near the nucleus. Considering the coupling efficiency and timescales, we propose that the AGN outflow in this galaxy may exert both negative and positive feedback on its host. Additionally, the star formation and the AGN activities could be attributed to the interaction between NGC 2992 and NGC 2993.

Abstract:We present spectra of the nuclear regions of 50 nearby (D = 1-92 Mpc, median = 20 Mpc) galaxies of morphological types E to Sm. The spectra, obtained with the Gemini Near-IR Spectrograph on the Gemini North telescope, cover a wavelength range of approximately 0.85-2.5 mu m at R similar to 1300-1800. There is evidence that most of the galaxies host an active galactic nucleus (AGN), but the range of AGN luminosities (log (L2-10keV [erg s(-1)]) = 37.0-43.2) in the sample means that the spectra display a wide variety of features. Some nuclei, especially the Seyferts, exhibit a rich emission-line spectrum. Other objects, in particular the type 2 Low Ionization Nuclear Emission Region galaxies, show just a few, weak emission lines, allowing a detailed view of the underlying stellar population. These spectra display numerous absorption features sensitive to the stellar initial mass function, as well as molecular bands arising in cool stars, and many other atomic absorption lines. We compare the spectra of subsets of galaxies known to be characterized by intermediate-age and old stellar populations, and find clear differences in their absorption lines and continuum shapes. We also examine the effect of atmospheric water vapor on the signal-to-noise ratio achieved in regions between the conventional NIR atmospheric windows, which are of potential interest to those planning observations of redshifted emission lines or other features affected by telluric H2O. Further exploitation of this data set is in progress, and the reduced spectra and data reduction tools are made available to the community.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Near-infrared long-slit spectroscopy has been used to study the stellar population (SP) of the low luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and matched analogues (LLAMA) sample. To perform the SP fits we have employed the X-shooter simple stellar population models together with the starlight code. Our main conclusions are: The star formation history of the AGNs is very complex, presenting many episodes of star formation during their lifetimes. In general, AGN hosts have higher fractions of intermediate-age SP (light-weighted mean ages, <t > L ≲ 4.5 Gyr) when compared with their analogues (<t > L ≲ 8.0 Gyr). AGNs are more affected by reddening and require significant fractions of featureless continuum and hot dust components. The ratio between the AGN radiated energy and the gravitational potential energy of the molecular gas (ERad/EPG) for the AGN is compared with the <t > L and a possible anticorrelation is observed. This suggests that the AGN is affecting the star formation in these galaxies, in the sense that more energetic AGN [log(ERad/EPG) ≳ 3] tend to host nuclear younger SP (<t > L ≲4 Gyr). We found that the recent (t <2 Gyr) returned (recycled) stellar mass is higher in AGN than in the controls. We also provide evidence that the mass-loss of stars would be enough to feed the AGN, thus providing observational constraints for models that predict that AGN feeding is partially due to the recycled gas from dying stars.

Abstract:We present the first quantified, statistical map of broad-line active galactic nucleus (AGN) frequency with host galaxy color and stellar mass in nearby (0.01 < z < 0.11) galaxies. Aperture photometry and z-band concentration measurements from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) are used to dis- entangle AGN and galaxy emission, resulting in estimates of uncontaminated galaxy rest-frame color, luminosity, and stellar mass. Broad-line AGNs are distributed throughout the blue cloud and green valley at a given stellar mass, and are much rarer in quiescent (red sequence) galaxies. This is in contrast to the published host galaxy properties of weaker narrow-line AGNs, indicating that broad-line AGNs occur during a different phase in galaxy evolution. More luminous broad-line AGNs have bluer host galaxies, even at fixed mass, suggesting that the same processes that fuel nuclear activity also efficiently form stars. The data favor processes that simultaneously fuel both star formation activity and rapid supermassive black hole accretion. If AGNs cause feedback on their host galaxies in the nearby universe, the evidence of galaxy-wide quenching must be delayed until after the broad-line AGN phase.
