Salvaging the mandible invaded by the tumor with microwave hyperthermia

Abstract:Objective Microwave hyperthermia was applied on tumor-bearing bone in order to study its effectiveness and complication. Methods Ten patients were treated with microwave hyperthermia. The soft tissue lesions were resected routinely and the alveolar processes were resected. The residue bone including the lesion and some normal bone close to the tumor was subjected to heat at 55℃for 15 minutes by microwave, with surrounding normal soft tissue protected by copper mesh. Resnlts There was no swelling and pain in the local region. The wounds healed well in 7 patients,wound infection and pathological fracture occurred in 3 patients. No local recurrences of tumor occurred in all of patients. Conclusion Microwave hyperthermia has effective inactivation of tumor cells in tumor bearing bones. If the indication was strict to chose, there is no serious complication. As the time of follow - up was short, the long-term effectiveness was waited for further observation.
