Abstract:Heating capacity of an air-source heat pump (ASHP) system often decreases due to frost on the air-side heat exchanger (evaporator) when the air temperature drops in winter. If the amount of frost accumulates to a certain value, performance of the system will degrade. Therefore, defrosting mode needs to be operated periodically. In order to solve the above problems, heat transfer enhancement or advanced defrosting methods should be adopted, but all these methods cannot solve the problems mentioned in essence. A novel frost-free air-source heat pump system is proposed, the new system can realize heating which does not need defrost in winter. In this new system, extracting heat process from environment includes two steps: the first one is extracting heat from the environment and then to the solution, the second one is releasing heat to the evaporator from the solution, avoiding frosting on the evaporator surface. A theoretical model is established to analyze the performance of the system. Results indicate that the novel system can operate more efficiently than the conventional air-source heat pump in winter. In addition, the new system does not need to run in defrosting mode periodically.

Abstract:A new type of air-source heat pump system with liquid subcooling defrosting ( ASHPSD ) was proposed, in which a hot liquid refrigerant is used for defrosting; further, the outdoor unit of the system comprises multiple evaporators. In the process of frosting and defrosting, a finite-time, steady-state thermodynamic method was adopted to establish a simulation model of heat and mass transfer. Simulation results demonstrate that the defrosting performance of the heat pump system is optimal when the number of evaporators is four. Furthermore, the heat and mass transfer in the process of frosting and defrosting was calculated, particularly the variation in frost layer thickness with time. An experimental apparatus for the ASHPSD system was developed, following which its defrosting performance was experimentally investigated. Experimental results show that the energy efficiency ratio of the system can still reach 2.32 when the outdoor air temperature is −10°C.

Abstract:A new solar-assisted hot water heat pump system is proposed that uses stored solar energy to defrost the outdoor unit. The system is mainly featured by two water tanks, one of which can be used to collect part of the solar heat during daytime and is used in the defrosting processes during night. Experiments were conducted in lab conditions to test the performance of this novel design, in which the solar heating systems was represented by electrical heating. Results show that the new system had a system COP almost 82% higher than the traditional system where the reverse-cycle defrosting uses the water thank as the evaporator. The advantage of this system is that it can make use of the low grade solar heat, which is difficult to collect or use in normal solar water heating system. This system is particularly suitable for regions with cold and humid winters like the hot summer and colder winter zone in China.

Abstract:Heat pump becomes attractive for recirculated hot water heating in cold regions, whereas conventional configurations face difficulties in operation at low ambient temperatures. A novel single-stage air-source heat pump using eco-friendly CO2/HC is proposed in this paper. The novel heat pump is featured by independent regulation of operating parameters according to the change of ambient condition. Through parametric analyses, the positive effects of the design of branches in the novel heat pump are demonstrated for reducing irreversible losses. The underlying mechanism of the superiority of the novel heat pump is revealed that, the application of suitable eco-friendly CO2/HC and the optimization of operating parameters result in lower compression ratio and optimized irreversible loss in recuperator. Under supply/return water temperatures of 75 °C/50 °C and ambient temperatures ranging from −30 °C to 10 °C, better heating seasonal performance factor and higher volumetric heating capacity of the novel heat pump are obtained, compared with conventional heat pumps. With the application of low-GWP refrigerant and the achievement of high seasonal performance during wintertime, the novel heat pump in this paper exhibits great potential in sustainable development for heating technology in regards of reduction of energy consumption and pollutant emission.

Abstract:In order to improve the application of renewable energy in cold regions and overcome the drawback of the low performance of traditional air source heat pumps (ASHP) in a low temperature environment, a novel type of dual-source heat pump system is proposed, which includes a heat pump, photovoltaic–thermal (PVT) modules, an air heat exchanger , and phase-change energy storage equipment. In response to different outdoor environmental parameters, the heat pump can use the PVT, ambient air, or solidification latent heat of water in the ice tank as the heat source. This study focuses on analyzing the applicability of this novel system in residential buildings. Firstly, the thermodynamic performance of the system under typical operating conditions is experimentally analyzed, proving that the system can effectively utilize solar energy under low solar irradiation . Then, the operational strategy of the system is optimized with the optimization goal of system exergy efficiency . Finally, the continuous operation performance of the system in winter is simulated and analyzed. The results show that the utilization ratio of solar energy reaches 2/3 in winter. Compared with the traditional ASHP system, the energy-saving rate of the novel system is 73.6 %, which can reduce the carbon emissions by 69 %. These results provide technical guidance for the application of the novel system in residential buildings in cold regions.

Experimental Study on New Variable Composition Heat Pump System

Abstract:A new heat pump system with variable composition was proposed to enhance heating capacity of air source heat pumps in winter. Experimental research was conducted under different operating conditions using mixture refrigerant R32/R134a. The results show that heating capacity, power consumption and coefficient of performance (COP) of the system increased as the composition of the highly volatile component of the mixture refrigerant increased. Compared with constant compositions, the heating capacity of the system with variable compositions at lower ambient temperatures was higher and its COP could increase by 5% when the inlet temperature of the evaporator was -14°C. The capacity of the heat pump can be continuously adjusted to meet the requirements of the heating load.

Abstract:In order to reduce carbon emissions and promote the development of sustainable buildings, it is essential to combine solar energy with air source heat pumps. Nonetheless, challenges persist regarding the intermittent and unstable nature of solar energy, coupled with the limited utilization of air source heat pumps in colder climates. Actually, the benefits of the two technologies could be combined to create one of the most efficient heating systems for extremely cold regions by utilizing phase change material for heat storage. This study centers on a heating system that couples dual heat sources for enhanced efficiency. The system utilizes phase change materials for heat storage and introduces an effective operational control strategy. Furthermore, influence of various critical parameters on the composite system is explored. The experiment demonstrated that average power consumption of the compressor is 1.87 kW, which is 21.1% lower and the average coefficient of performance of the system is 5.42, exceeding the original system by 143.0%. Furthermore, the novel system requires just 1.8 h to finish heat storage, which is shortened to 32.7% of the previous system. The enhanced system has now become more efficient and user-friendly, while also boasting improved functionality in low-temperature environments. These improvements are particularly advantageous when the heating system is deployed in regions with severely cold climates.

Abstract:In this paper, a special air heat pump system was put forward used for chilled region in China. The out door heat exchanger was specially designed and the system is different from that usual. According to the weather conditions in winter of Beijing, this special heat pump system was analyzed theoretically. The results show that this heat pump is advanced when used for Beijing and other similar chilled region in climate conditions.

Abstract:An experimental system which can simulate different conditions of the outdoor weather was built.Under the situation of 0℃ and relative humidity 65%, dynamic performance of the Air Source Heat Pump(ASHP) was analyzed when the outdoor evaporator was jammed up, and the influence for the ASHP air-conditioner was studied when outdoor heat exchanger was jammed.It can provide suggestion for optimizing design of the ASHP air-conditioner.

Abstract:Air-source heat pumps (ASHPs) are being widely used in residential and commercial buildings and have a huge potential market and development foreground for its energy-savings, high efficiency and environmental friendliness. However, at low temperatures, frost can accumulate on the surface of the finned outdoor coil which will decrease the heating capacity and coefficient of performance (COP). This paper proposes a novel frost-free air-source heat pump water heater (ASHPWH) system, which is coupled to an extra heat exchanger coated by a solid desiccant (EHECSD) with an energy storage device (ESD). To test the system performance, experiments are carried out and the results show that the relative humidity (RH) of the air can be reduced to 52% after dehumidification and the outdoor heat exchanger can be kept frost-free for 34 min at a temperature of 0 degrees C and relative humidity (RH) of 80%. In addition, the average COP of the system is 2.81 in a single period, which is an increase of 7.25% and 46.3% in comparison with hot-gas bypass defrosting (HGBD) and electric resistance heating (ERH) respectively. Abstract:As the system low level heat source when defrosting, a phase change heat storage device is introduced to air source heat pump system. The performances of heat storage and release of the phase change materials are investigated by comparative experimental study of the traditional defrosting and the heat storage defrosting. The defrosting parameters include: the temperature of the set points of indoor and outdoor heat exchanger, the phase change time and temperature, the compressor suction pressure and power, etc. The results show that the phase change heat storage defrosting can reduce defrosting time about 30%, increase compressor suction pressure, improve heating quality and ensure defrosting reliability.

Abstract:To solve the problem of reverse-cycle defrosting of large and medium air source heat pump, a new type of air source heat pump cycle with multiple parallel outdoor machines defrosting alternatively was proposed. By switching valves to realize an outdoor machine defrosting, the rest of the outdoor machines were in the state of normal evaporative heat absorption at the same time. In the case of non-stopping heating, defrosting can be realized while recovering frost thawing cooling capacity. A test platform of research system was built in an artificial environment room. The law of the variation of the compressor suction, exhaust pressure and the system thermal performance in the condition of frost free, frosting and defrosting were discussed.

Abstract:Based on the theory of rational energy utilization in time and space,in order to solve the problem of poor reliability of defrosting and worsen indoor environment because of defrosting,a new air source heat pump system of heat flux defrosting is presented.An energy store equipment of phase change is added to the system to store surplus heat when heap pump runs in high efficiency and the heat is used as low grade energy for defrosting.So the problem of the energy lacking for heat flux defrosting is thoroughly solved. The test board of the new system is introduced and the compared experiment of defrosting characteristic of the traditional system and the new energy store system are carried on.The result proved the advantage of the new air source heat pump system of energy store for heat flux defrosting.

Abstract:By analyzing the current cyclical process of heat pump,a kind of new-type multiuse heat pump was proposed.In this system,the sensible heat of steam is released in high-temperature heat exchanger,liquefaction latent heat and liquid sensible heat of the cycle fluid are released in moderate-temperature heat exchanger(condenser) and low-temperature exchanger respectively.Calculation showed that the heating coefficient of the new heat pump is higher than existing heat pump under the same cycle fluid.The new-type multiuse heat pump is fit for the family,school,enterprise and institution to provide heating/air condition,bathing and boiling water,etc..

Abstract:Working principle and work processes of nonfrosting air-source heat pump system are proposed. Basic on nonfrosting principle of ASHP, the spray solution is filtered out. It analysises the properties of dehumidification solution which is currently used. Common dehumidification solution is compared from steam pressure, corrosiveness, economical ef-ficiency aspects. The glycerol is elected as the spray solution for outdoor heat exchanger. Comparing the concentration and flow on the performance of dehumidification solution is to find a reasonable spraying concentration and the flow of the spray solution. Then using this concentration and flow rate in different outdoor climate conditions to analysis of different outdoor conditions and inhibiting influence of frost. The variation of the room fan capacity, indoor heating, power input, COP, water interception of spray solution is provided. In the end of this article, through regeneration of spray solution set condition for experimental data analysis, It analysis the requirement and the feasibility on concentrated regeneration of different areas needs and provides the references for the applicating of the nonfrosting air-source heat pump.

Abstract:The heat pump air conditioning system is a promising solution for energy conservation and ensuring a good driving range can be maintained. Micro-channel heat exchangers are used as outdoor heat exchangers to improve the heat transfer efficiency. A heat pump system introduces frosting problems to the outdoor heat exchanger, especially in a low temperature and high humidity environment. This study conducted an experiment on the frosting and defrosting process of the outdoor heat exchanger of a heat pump air conditioning system for electric vehicles. The surface of the outside heat exchanger had an uneven distribution of the frost layer owing to the variation in the liquid-phase refrigeration occupation. Thermal parameters of the system were obtained. The suction pressure was sensitive to the frosting process, decreasing from (0.15–0.25) to (0.02–0.1) MPa, and it can be used as a frosting monitoring parameter. The frosting and defrosting behavior was also studied at a micrometer scale on the surface of the heat exchanger. The ice bridge phenomenon was observed in the frosting process. Hydrophilic and hydrophobic treatments of the heat exchanger surface were conducted for compassion and it was found that the hydrophilic treatment of the surface of the outdoor heat exchanger of the vehicle heat pump effectively slows frosting. Future experimental research should investigate the effects of superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic surface treatments, in addition to hydrophilic and hydrophobic surface treatments on the performance of the heat exchanger, to improve the performance of the overall heat pump system.

The air source heat pump supplies 10-20 ℃ water as low grade heat source of the water source heat pump. Analyses the technical and economical features of the system.
