Abstract:New media is not a new phenomenon. Printed publications, the mass press, radio and television were new media at the time when they emerged. However, what currently is new is that the new new media is referred to by a summary term instead of a proper name as was the case with the newspaper, the radio or television.1 The established practice of referring to new media in the plural takes into account that recent innovations brought about diverse new communication means varying with respect to their modes of production, distribution, reception and utilization. New media are characterized by “underdetermination” (Poster, 1999). Symptomatic of this situation is the plurality of terms trying to capture new media developments: “digital media”, “information and communication technology” (ICT), “computer-mediated communication”, “Internet”, “social media”, even “new new media” (Levinson, 2013). “The Internet” often serves as a term for new media, although it is in itself a “bundle of different media and modalities” with various communication characteristics and manifold conditions of use (Lievrouw & Livingstone, 2002, p. 6).

Abstract:The emergence of new information and communication technologies and new social communication practices has called for the transformation of communication studies.Communication researchers have been asking a number of questions:Can the new information and communication technologies lead to a paradigm shift in communication theories?Are classic communication theories still applicable to the new media environment?What are the new research questions that emerge in the new media age?What are the interactions between the new information and communication technologies and new media research?How do the new media studies transform the current communication research?How should Chinese new media research be developed under the background of globalization and unique context of Chinese society and culture ? Based on the review of previous research,this study analyzes three approaches to new media studies,namely social scientific,critical,and interpretive paradigms,and reveals three findings.First,it is the changing communication activities and practices in which people engage that lead to the changing views of communication,such as a shift from″media-audience″study to ″new media-user″study.Moreover,the development of new media industry not only generates new research objects and theories,but offers new perspectives and methods to test classic theories.Second,in examining the relationship between new media technologies and social change,this study concludes that technological determinism is usually a dominant paradigm in the early phase of new media technologies.As these new technologies diffuse,researchers will turn to a social shaping perspective that focuses on how new media technologies are shaped by various social forces on the one hand,and are shaping social life in socio-historical contexts on the other.Third,the emergence of new media events has become a unique and influential communication phenomenon that attracts the attention of a large number of Chinese communication researchers.Nevertheless,most of these studies are case studies and are limited to the application of western theories to the Chinese society,thus failing to provide any insight into the communication mechanism in the Chinese new media environment.Against such a backdrop,this study suggests apossible direction for Chinese scholars to facilitate a″cultural shift″of new media research,to adopt the″thick description″method of cultural sociology to reveal the specific implications of new media events,and to uncover the socio-psychological consequences of these events and their associated social factors in the Chinese context.The goal is to highlight the interplay of different social forces in new media studies in transitional China.Meanwhile,scholars should take advantage of new media technologies to develop new research methods and procedures,to explore unique research questions in the Chinese social and cultural context,and to generate new theories that can facilitate the development of communication research.

Abstract:This article addresses the role of digital technologies in redefining journalism. The research finds that the new media appear in the traditional news media mainly as a source of information rather than the originator of the news agenda or a platform for expressing public opinion. Data were gathered from the new media which were cited in the traditional media from 30 September to 30 December 2010. The analysis shows that the use of new media is driven by commercial considerations. Commercial concerns, rather than an attempt to improve the quality of news contents, largely determine how traditional media organizations use the new media sources.

This article explores the interplay between the aforementioned media formats and evaluates their influence on the diffusion of information, engagement of audiences, and social dynamics. While conventional media maintains a steadfast social standing, the advent of new media has introduced interactive elements and improved accessibility, resulting in significant transformations in individuals' daily experiences. This research investigates the positive effects, such as enhanced availability of varied information, heightened involvement, and increased innovation, alongside the negative effects, encompassing the dissemination of false information, the building of echo chambers, and issues over privacy. This study underscores the need for media literacy in efficiently navigating intricate dynamics, underlining the necessity of making well-informed judgments in the presence of misinformation and the evolving media environment.

Abstract:This paper examines issues of digitality and materiality of new media, grounded in a study of online TV watching in China. Particularly, by looking at how people make choices and decisions regarding TV watching in everyday life, we highlight material and digital properties of new media TV, and how they support and condition actions and interactions around them. The study illustrates that materiality and digitality are complementary, instead of one substituting the other, and are highly intertwined in the hybrid media environment around which meaningful experiences are conditioned and produced. It also suggests that an analytic distinction between materiality and digitality is fruitful in unpacking the complex relations between media technologies and social experiences.

Abstract:Abstract This article examines studies surrounding Chinese new media and identity construction from a historical perspective. More specifically, this article examines the dynamism of Chinese individuals’ practices surrounding various new media that emerged and evolved at different times from the 1990s to the present, with a particular focus on identity construction within a theoretical framework of individualization. Drawing upon a review of previous studies and analysis of a new case, this article discusses how identities are negotiated and created through the consumption of new media products and services, the expression of selves, interactions with others and participation in political events. Lastly, this article addresses the changes and continuities in Chinese individuals’ practices of identity construction accompanied with the evolution of different new media throughout the last two decades.
A new understanding of ‘New Media’: Online platforms as digital mediums

Abstract:For the last few decades, media theorists have been faced with the understanding that the networked digital computer is the meta-medium to end all mediums. This places researchers in the curious position where online platforms, such as YouTube, cannot legitimately and directly be contrasted with traditional analogue mediums, such as cinema and television. To address this inconsistency, I developed the theory of foundation technologies and their respective proto-affordances, which demonstrates the existence of past periods of ‘new media’. These were brought about by the introduction of key technologies that each offered, at the time, a new and unique underlying affordance to a society. Each new ‘proto-affordance’ inspired social disruption, as new specific mediums were spawned – each remediating existing mediums of similar mode. This framework shows digitality as another evolutionary step in a line of foundation technologies, which includes the artefact, the machine and electricity. The theory of foundation technologies permits software-based online platforms, such as YouTube, SoundCloud and Twitter, to be called digital mediums, and thus aids in understanding their technological substrate and unique affordances. Justifying this relation between old mediums and new, digital, ones equips us to more effectively comprehend and analyse these platforms as to their social adoption and uses, cultural practices, implications and effects. This allows us to better understand and control our present, and even guide our potential future.
A Comparative Analysis of the Knowledge Gap Effects between New Media and Old Media

Abstract:As an important factor influencing the formation of knowledge gap,media difference has long been a research focus in the knowledge gap literature.Previous studies,however,primarily compared the differential effects between newspaper and television on the knowledge gap.Little attention has been paid to the possible disparities between new media and old media regarding their impacts on people's knowledge acquisition.Based on two national surveys in the U.S.A.,this study finds that the usage gap between individuals with different socio-economic status is greater for the Internet than for traditional media.More importantly,the greater usage gap on the Internet is also associated with a bigger knowledge gap.This suggests that the digital divide not only has a stronger magnitude,but has more severe consequences than does the analog divide.These findings can facilitate our understanding of the knowledge gap and its antecedents,and can help justify the necessity of the digital divide research.

Abstract:Abstract This article discusses new developments in the field of literary theory and literary praxis in the era of new media from the perspectives of media theory and interology. It takes new media as a McLuhanesque formal cause and holds that a conspicuous characteristic of literary works in the era of new media lies in the salience and normalization of interality. This development means art forms like mosaic and Pointillism have acquired a paradigmatic significance as a result. In revealing this new paradigm, the article also points to some current social maladies that have come with new media. It holds that literary writing should go beyond the mere embodiment of symptoms and make an intervention in media-induced maladies. The article affirms the irreplaceability of experimental literature and serious literature in an era of attention deficit, and points out that form should occupy a paramount position in literary theory, literary criticism, and literary praxis.

Abstract:The concept "media frame" is widely used in current communication research.However,its various definitions and applications undermine the original articulation.This paper proposes that "media frame" should be defined by the abstract property of relative theories and interpreted under different discourse contexts.Based on this hypothesis and a review of relative literatures,the author suggests that "media frame" should be defined as invisible microstructures of a certain culture accumulation,which presents as visible symbolic expression and generates significance.By providing a descriptive model and rigorous concept,the author intends to bring more theoretical discussions on "media frame" and its application.
