Abstract:This paper investigates how a firm’s characteristics restrict the influence of monetary policy changes on its investment behavior.Focusing on China ’s listed companies for a sample period from the first quarter of 2002 to the first quarter of 2011,we find that quantityoriented and price-based monetary policies have heterogeneous impacts on corporate investment behavior,but the influence of monetary policies is constrained by the liquidity, inventory,size and asset-liability ratio of a firm.Firms with higher liquidity,lower inventory level and lower asset-liability ratios are less sensitive to the impact from two kinds of monetary policies.The larger the size of the firm,the less it is subject to influence from quantity-oriented monetary policy;it responds more to price-based monetary policy.The policy implication is that the monetary authorities should pay attention to the importance of policy-making based on the monetary demand of microeconomic entities.

Abstract:The interest rate is a vital tool of monetary policy and is taken into account when the central bank and the government deal with variables such as capital flows, inflation, unemployment and investment. In the context of financial crises, central banks are given the key task of growing the national economy and maintaining financial stability. Formulating monetary policy, in particular lowering or increasing interest rates, is therefore under close scrutiny. This article first discusses how China's central bank has been using interest rates as a key policy tool in and after the latest financial crisis. Against this background, some “domestic” challenges of adjusting interest rates will be discussed. China's latest decision to let banks set lending rates freely by removing an artificial floor is a new policy move that has triggered tremendous market reactions. However, it will be argued in this article that this deregulatory move is probably simply another gesture from the new leadership to deepen economic reform without touching upon vested-interest groups.

Abstract:China?s central bank frequently adjusts its reserve requirements for commercial banks as a way to stabilize economic fluctuations. These adjustments affect the overall credit supply but can also lead to the reallocation of credit and capital. Evidence shows that increases in reserve requirements raise off-balance-sheet lending, which typically benefits China?s more productive private sector, at the expense of on-balance-sheet loans to less productive state-owned enterprises. Under certain conditions, reserve requirements can be a useful additional policy instrument for improving resource allocations and also for macroeconomic stabilization in China.

Abstract:This paper uses 13,766 firm-year observations between 2003 and 2013 from China to investigate the effects of monetary policy on corporate investment and the mitigating effects of cash holding. We find that tightening monetary policy reduces corporate investment while cash holdings mitigate such adverse effects. The cash mitigating role is especially significant for financially constrained firms, non-state-owned enterprises (non-SOEs) and those firms located in a less developed financial market. Cash holding also improves investment efficiency when monetary policy is tightening and tightening monetary policy enhances the ‘cash-cash flow’ sensitivity. Our empirical evidence calls for a critical evaluation on the monetary policies implemented in China which are less effective for state-owned enterprises. It also calls for a necessity for local government to further develop regional financial markets to protect vulnerable businesses, such as non-SOEs and financially constrained firms, from external shocks in order to maintain their sustainable growth and competitive advantages.

Abstract:At present,Chinese economy is in the "three-high" state,a state of high growth,high inflation and high liquidity.In the first half of 2011,along with a series of monetary and fiscal restraints,inflaction is expected to be controlled to some degree,and the economy has begun to return to regular development.The interest rate term structure estimated by the cubic B-spline method reflects that the monetary policies such as raising the interest rate,and up regulating of the reserve rate have made the financing cost rise remarkably,indicating that the monetary restraint effectiveness is distinct and the urgency to take further restraint policies has been greatly reduced.It is anticipated that the inflation level in the second half of 2011 will go down evidently.However,the monetary policy will continue to keep steady but tight to some degree to consolidate the policy effect.At the same time,the proactive fiscal policy will be implemented to boost the smooth development of economy.

Abstract:Currently,our country is facing quite severe inflation pressure.Inflation will not only cause the cost rise of enterprise,living consumption increases of residents,decline of dweller deposit,but also aggravated the probability of economic crisis and the difficulty of inflation expectations management.Causes of China's present and future inflation are mainly embodied in three aspects: first,loose monetary policy leads to domestic liquidity surplus;secondly,a flood of dollars and international commodity prices imports into Chinese input;thirdly,the demographic dividend inflection and natural disaster of agriculture caused the great rise of labor costs and prices of agricultural products.Therefore,we should take measures in order to effectively alleviate the inflation pressure,namely: 1.To adjust the goal of monetary policy,and strictly control the liquidity;2.To transform trade policy and reduce the foreign exchange reserves;3,To accelerate the adjustment of economic structure to a fundamental transformation of economic development mode;4.To properly guide the public inflation expectations and stimulate price stability;5.To strengthen agricultural production and promote the circulation of commodities.

Abstract:China prohibits its private sector from freely trading foreign assets and tightly manages currency exchange rates. In the wake of the recent global financial crisis, interest rates on China’s foreign assets fell sharply, while yields on Chinese domestic assets remained relatively high, posing a challenge for China’s monetary policy. Opening the capital account would improve China’s capacity to weather external shocks, such as sudden declines in foreign interest rates. However, allowing the exchange rate to float without removing capital controls is less effective.

Abstract:This paper employs cointegration and error correction model to study the interlinkages between FDI and RMB real exchange rate,and uses VAR model to analyze the policy of dampening down an appreciation in the real exchange rate of RMB.The main findings are as follows.Firstly,FDI mostly flows to traded sector,which has no effect on the real exchange rate of RMB in the short run,but leads to appreciation in the long run.Secondly,in the short term sterilized intervention is a better method that can mitigate appreciation,while it is invalid in the long term.Thirdly,loosening capital outflows and encouraging home enterprises “going abroad” are the best policy for China in order to control appreciation of real exchange rate when foreign capitals pour into China.Fourthly,fiscal policy also can choke back appreciation,but the effectiveness is weak in comparison with the policy of loosening capital outflows.

Abstract:Abstract China's recent removal of the last ceiling restriction on deposit rates in October 2015 is a milestone in interest rate liberalization, but not the end of it. International experience suggests that, without structural and quantitative reforms, simply freeing interest rates can result in major financial stress. Before China's central bank can completely relinquish implicit or explicit guidance for commercial banks' interest rate determination, it needs to accomplish two tasks: improvement of commercial banks' pricing capability as well as the monetary policy transmission mechanism. Both tasks require significant reform measures to be initiated, such as enforcing market discipline, forming a new monetary policy framework, developing money and capital markets, abandoning quantitative restrictions on credit and reforming the financial regulatory system.

Abstract:China’s economy has grown at an unprecedented pace since 1978, which has resulted in a sustained improvement in the average living standard in China. A theoretical model is developed in the present study to analyze the role of interest rate control in China’s economic growth, where investment is primarily determined by interest rates available to firms and entrepreneurs. When the central bank regulates the interest rates and makes them below the equilibrium rate, high-level investment activities boost economic growth and introduce new technologies into the economy, which in turn promotes growth in labour productivity. As the current marginal product of capital is much higher than the interest rate, the output growth is much faster than consumption growth and exports become an important part of the economy. To maintain competitiveness of exports over a longer period, it is necessary to keep exchange rates low, which results in large foreign exchange reserves. When the export sector is losing its competitiveness edge due to increased labour costs and exports cannot digest the difference between output growth and consumption plus investment growth, interest rate control may lose its positive impact on economic growth.

Abstract:<p>Based on a macro and micro cross view, we empirically test the interactions among monetary policy, accounting information comparability, and investment efficiency with a sample of A-share listed firms in China from 2005 to 2019. We find that tightening monetary policy will aggravate underinvestment behavior, such as inefficient investment, while improvement in accounting information comparability can effectively mitigate the negative impact of tightening monetary policy on underinvestment, so as to improve firm investment efficiency. Further study shows that, in a period of monetary policy tightening, firms with high agency costs and high financing constraints can significantly reduce underinvestment by improving the comparability of accounting information, thus improving the investment efficiency of firms. After distinguishing the type of firm ownership (state-owned enterprises vs. private enterprises), we find that firms can reduce the effect of insufficient investment during a period of monetary tightening by improving the comparability of accounting information, which is more significant in the sample of private enterprises (PEs).</p>

Abstract:In recent years, the People's Bank of China (PBC) has been relying increasingly on the adjustment of nominal interest rates for stabilization purposes. This paper employs the Euler equation approach to examine the effect of monetary policy, conducted through the interest rate channel, on household consumption. Econometric estimates of six related models suggest a weak substitution effect of the real interest rate. Inflation rates seem to be more relevant to household consumption decisions than do nominal interest rates. The results provide much evidence for the significance of liquidity constraints, but little for that of precautionary savings.

Abstract:<p>China's financial market has undergone significant changes since financial deleveraging commenced and regulatory supervision was tightened in 2017. Intensifying China–US trade tensions have further increased the uncertainties of external environments. In this article, we estimate the natural interest rate using a Bayesian state space model considering financial factors and open conditions, and analyze the relationships among the natural interest rate, economic activities and monetary policies. We find that technological and demographic factors are the main drivers of natural interest rates, while financial factors and open conditions also play important roles. In particular, shocks in the financial markets and the external economic environment in recent years are important reasons for the decline of China's natural interest rate. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen research on the estimation of the natural interest rate to ensure China's transformation into more price‐based monetary policy and high‐quality development.</p>

Abstract:The adjustment of the post-crisis global imbalances will likely be manifest in all aspects of the real and financial economy,characterized by rising trade protectionism,declining trade growth,moderating international capital inflows,as well as many advanced economies increasing their savings but reducing their current account deficits.As the most important investment currency,the U.S.dollar will not easily give up its role as the World's dominant reserve currency.The internationalization of renminbi(RMB),together with an appropriation of RMB to appropriate levels,can increase China's money policy flexibility,promote its development of the financial market,expand its domestic demand and help it to restructure the economy.As the US and China may be in different stage of business cycle,while the United States may still welcome rising inflation after the crisis,it may be time for China to take tightening measures to achieve price stability.It is time for China to push renminbi internationalization and reform the renminbi exchange rate regime.

Abstract:China's central bank frequently adjusts reserve requirements for macroeconomic stabilization. We evaluate the effectiveness of such policy in a two-sector DSGE model. A heavy-industry sector-proxied as state-owned enterprises (SOEs)-is financed through government-guaranteed bank loans subject to reserve requirements, while more productive private firms rely on unregulated off-balance sheet financing. Increasing reserve requirements reallocates resources towards private firms, raising both aggregate productivity and SOE bankruptcies. Optimal reserve requirement adjustments complement money supply adjustments in improving macroeconomic stability and welfare. However, gains are greater under sector-specific shocks, which call for resource reallocation, than under aggregate shocks. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The monetary policy(MP) is one of the main means of various governments to adjust and control the macro-economy: it is an important event of the macro-economy faced by micro firms.The fluctuation of the MP will produce noticeable impact on the behavior of micro-firms.When the MP turns tight,loans become scarce;however,the marginal effect of financing by incurring debts at this time may be most powerful,therefore,the relationship between the debt and the performance is more capable to be observed.In this paper,we have,taking as a sample the data of China's listed companies between 1998 and 2008,researched the allocation of the loan resources(AOTLR) and its consequences and found that,in the period of the tightening MP,the marginal increase of the credit funds will lead to the fact that the performance of firms will be still better and increase in the next year.At the same time,this relationship mainly gives expression in non-state-owned enterprises,and indicates that the economic effect,as a whole,of the non-state-owned enterprises is still better but they have not obtained enough credit finds,which shows that the AOTLR of China's banking system has not reached the best level.In this article,we,in our research has offered new evidences for showing the relations between being in debt and firm's performance,and,at the same time,put forward direct and concrete proof for the China's AOTLR and its economic consequences.

Abstract:By means of the use of "the monetary index" issued by The People’s Bank of China, we have studied the relationship between monetary policies and firm’s cash holdings (CH). We have discovered that the level of Firm’s CH varies with the degree of the tightening of monetary policies: when the monetary policy tends to be tight, the constraints of external financing increase and firms will lift the level of CH; when the monetary policy tends to be loose, the constraints of external financing decrease and firms will lower the level of CH. During the period of monetary contractions, in order to lessen the restraints of external financing to meet the future demand for investment, firms that grow rapidly will increase more cash. We have also found that firms that develop quickly and firms that develop slowly quite differ in the ways of financing for the increase of CH. The results of our study have supported the precautionary incentives and trade-off theory in the theory of CH.

Abstract:In recent years, interest rate of our country has experienced frequent regulations. Five increases in 2007 intended to cool the over-hot economy and the second half of the year 2008 witnessed four successive decreases of deposit interest rate by the Central Bank of China. It is evident that interest rate is quite popular as an important currency policy instrument. Stating from June 8 th of 2012 when RMB loan and deposit benchmark rate of financial institutions was reduced, one-year term deposit rate went down by 0.25% and loan rate 0.25%, the fist reduction since the end of 2008. Besides, interest rate regulation influences currency supply, capital expected rate of return, and enterprises’ capital situation, etc. It will also exert some certain influence on the active stock market.
