Abstract:After China adopted the reform and opening-up policy, its crime is found to have similarities with its floating population in terms of cycles, spatial distribution and structure. Thus it is imperative to study the causes of the crimes committed by floating population and the relationship between floating population and the overall social crime rate. In China, the floating population is characterized by low income and high property crime rate, which could be fitted into the framework of criminal economics that studies the linkage between income gap and crime rate. Many researches have applied this framework to studying the relation among floating population, income inequality and crime rate, which results in a huge literature. The present paper reviews the theoretical development in this field from three aspects:floating population and crime, theoretical studies on floating population, income inequality and crime, empirical studies on their relationships. We also give our comments on existing studies and identify areas for future study.
