Abstract:We consider escape from chaotic maps through a subset of phase space, the hole. Escape rates are known to be locally constant functions of the hole position and size. In spite of this, for the doubling map we can extend the current best result for small holes, a linear dependence on hole size h, to include a smooth h^2 ln h term and explicit fractal terms to h^2 and higher orders, confirmed by numerical simulations. For more general hole locations the asymptotic form depends on a dynamical Diophantine condition using periodic orbits ordered by stability.

Abstract:A discontinuous and noninvertible circle map is introduced to describe modulated relaxation oscillators. The boundaries of the parameter regions are calculated where images of the jumping gap completely cover the noninvertible region so that the dynamics of the system are abruptly changed. We show that a kind of structure called a "hole" may appear due to the interaction between these two competing characteristics and may lead to some dynamic features. The influence of the holes on the boundaries of Arnold tongues is also discussed.

Abstract:Small-world networks are highly clustered networks with small average distance among the nodes. There are many natural and technological networks that present this kind of connections. The on-off intermittency is investigated in small-world networks of chaotic maps in this paper. We show how the small-world topology would affect the on-off intermittency behavior. The distributions of the laminar phase are calculated numerically. The results show that the laminar phases obey power-law distributions.

Abstract:The study of escape rates for a ball in a dynamical systems has been much studied. Understanding the asymptotic behavior of the escape rate as the radius of the ball tends to zero is an especially subtle problem. In the case of hyperbolic conformal systems this has been addressed by various authors. In this paper we consider a far more general realm of conformal maps where the analysis is correspondingly more complicated. We prove the existence of escape rates and calculate them in the context of countable alphabets, either finite or infinite, uniformly contracting conformal graph directed Markov systems with their special case of conformal countable alphabet iterated function systems. This goal is achieved by developing the appropriate theory of singular perturbations of Perron-Frobenius (transfer) operators associated with countable alphabet subshifts of finite type and Hölder continuous summable potentials. This is the key ingredient for further results about other conformal systems. These include topological Collet-Eckmann multimodal interval maps and rational maps of the Riemann sphere (an equivalent formulation is to be uniformly hyperbolic on periodic points), and also a large class of transcendental meromorphic functions.

Creation of discontinuities in circle maps

Abstract:Circle maps frequently arise in mathematical models of physical or biological systems. Motivated by Cherry flows and `threshold' systems such as integrate and fire neuronal models, models of cardiac arrhythmias, and models of sleep/wake regulation, we consider how structural transitions in circle maps occur. In particular we describe how maps evolve near the creation of a discontinuity. We show that the natural way to create discontinuities in the maps associated with both threshold systems and Cherry flows results in a square root singularity in the map as the discontinuity is approached from either one or both sides. We analyse the generic properties of maps with gaps displaying this local behaviour, showing how border collisions and saddle-node bifurcations are interspersed. This highlights how the Arnold tongue picture for tongues bordered by saddle-node bifurcations is amended once gaps are present. For the threshold models we also show that a loss of injectivity naturally results in the creation of multiple gaps giving rise to a novel codimension two bifurcation.

Abstract:Based on Integrate-and-Fire Model(ab.IFM),a type of circle map circuit is proposed.The iterative relation and symbolic dynamics are analyzed theoretically.By adjusting parameters of the circuit and the threshold signal,the circuit may work in periodic and chaotic states.A method of acquiring symbolic sequence only by logic judgment is studied,and the system is also constructed by MCU and logic units.From the symbolic sequences,it is convenient to compute period and rotation,to distinguish periodic,quasiperiodic and chaotic motion.So an effective way is provided for further study and application.

Abstract:We study the different rates of escape of points under iteration by holomorphic self-maps of $\mathbb C^*=\mathbb C\setminus\{ 0\}$ for which both 0 and $\infty$ are essential singularities. Using annular covering lemmas we construct different types of orbits, including fast escaping and arbitrarily slowly escaping orbits to either 0, $\infty$ or both. We also prove several properties about the set of fast escaping points for this class of functions. In particular, we show that there is an uncountable collection of disjoint sets of fast escaping points each of which has the Julia set as its boundary.

Abstract:In a generic dynamical system chaos and regular motion coexist side by side, in different parts of the phase space. The border between these, where trajectories are neither unstable nor stable but of marginal stability, manifests itself through intermittency, dynamics where long periods of nearly regular motions are interrupted by irregular chaotic bursts. We discuss the Perron-Frobenius operator formalism for such systems, and show by means of a 1-dimensional intermittent map that intermittency induces branch cuts in dynamical zeta functions. Marginality leads to long-time dynamical correlations, in contrast to the exponentially fast decorrelations of purely chaotic dynamics. We apply the periodic orbit theory to quantitative characterization of the associated power-law decays.

Abstract:The existence of strange nonchaotic attractors (SNAs) and the associated mechanisms are studied in a class of quasiperiodically forced piecewise smooth systems. We show that the birth of SNAs is through interior crisis, basin boundary metamorphosis, discontinuous quasiperiodic orbits, and double bifurcation routes. Compared with the fractal, torus-doubling, and type-I intermittency routes, the four routes have more abundant dynamical phenomena, namely, the crisis-induced intermittency, the collision between attractors and the boundaries of fractal basin, the discontinuous quasiperiodic orbits, and the double bifurcation vertices. The characteristics of SNAs are described with the help of some qualitative and quantitative methods, such as the Lyapunov exponent, phase sensitivity function, critical exponent, and power spectrum.

On Planar Shadowing Curves to Closed Escaping Curves

Abstract: We introduce a new dynamical system model called the shadowing problem, where a shadower chases after an escaper by always staring at and keeping the distance from him. When the escaper runs along a planar closed curve, we associate to the reduced shadowing equations the rotation number, and show that it depends only on the geometry of the escaping curve. Two notions called the critical shadowing distance and turning shadowing distance are introduced to characterize different dynamical behaviors. We show that a planar closed escaping curve could have shadowing curves of different types including periodic, subharmonic and ergodic ones, depending on the shadowing distance. Singularities of cusp type are found when the shadowing distance is large. Shadowing curves to an escaping circle are examined in details analytically and numerically. Finally, we conjecture that the critical shadowing distance and turning shadowing distance are coincident for typical escaping curves.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new method to study intermittent behaviors of coupled piecewise-expanding map lattices. We show that the successive transition between ordered and disordered phases occurs for almost every orbit when the coupling is small. That is, lim(n ->infinity) inf Sigma 1(<= i,j <= m) vertical bar x(i)(n) - x(j)(n)vertical bar = 0, lim(n ->infinity) sup Sigma 1(<= i,j <= m) vertical bar x(i)(n) - x(j)(n)vertical bar >= c(0) > 0, where x(i)(n) correspond to the coordinates of m nodes at the iterative step n. Moreover, when the uncoupled system is generated by the tent map and the lattice consists of two nodes, we prove a phase transition occurs between synchronization and intermittent behaviors. That is, lim(n ->infinity) vertical bar x(1)(n) -x(2)(n)vertical bar = 0 for vertical bar c - 1/2 vertical bar < 1/4 and intermittent behaviors occur for c - 1/2 vertical bar > 1/4, where 0 <= c <= 1 is the coupling.

In this crisis several chaotic attractors undergo cyclic collisions with their basin boundaries and merge into a bigger one, whose chaotic dynamical behavior exhibits cyclic transitions among its components with a well defined overall period.

Abstract:There exist extensive studies on periodic and random perturbations of various continuous maps investigating their dynamics. This paper presents a random piecewise smooth map derived from a simple inductor-less switching circuit. The bifurcation parameter is bounded and randomly selected from a stationary distribution. Due to the stochasticity inherent in either the parameter values or the state variable, the time evolution of the state variable cannot be predicted at a specific time instant. We observe that the state variable exhibits completely ergodic behavior when the minimum value of the parameter is 2.0. However, the ensemble average of the state variable converges to a fixed value. For parameter values ranging from 2.0 to 3.5, the system demonstrates nonchaotic behavior, and the absolute value of the Lyapunov exponent increases monotonically with the asymmetry (ap) of the distribution from which the bifurcation parameter values are sampled. We determine the probability density function of the random map and verify its invariance under any initial condition. The most noteworthy result is the disappearance of chaotic behavior when the lower range of the distribution is varied while maintaining a fixed upper threshold for a particular distribution, even though the nonrandom map exhibits an array of periodic and chaotic behaviors within that range.

Crisis dynamics of a class of single-degree-of-freedom piecewise linear oscillators

Abstract:We investigate boundary crises, interior crises, and merging crises of a class of single-degree-of-freedom piecewise linear oscillators. From the perspective of the tangency of manifolds, the mechanisms of boundary crises are revealed, and the critical exponents are determined to distinguish between homoclinic crises and heteroclinic crises. As the parameter changes continuously, a chaotic orbit suddenly disappear at a certain critical point and reappear suddenly at another critical point. This phenomenon of two sudden changes in the chaotic orbit is related to boundary crises caused by the tangency of the stable and unstable manifolds of the same unstable periodic orbit. We call the regions formed by the intersection of the stable and unstable manifolds of the unstable period orbits associated with boundary crises as the escape regions. The change in the area of the escape regions induces the sudden disappearance and reappearance of a chaotic orbit. Detailed numerical simulations and analyses show that boundary crises may interact with the hysteresis loop, which induces complex dynamical behaviors, including transitions between a stable periodic orbit and a chaotic orbit repeatedly. In the two parameters space, changing a parameter value in the same direction will cause the decreases of the distance between the two boundary-crisis curves. When the distance is zero, there exist a coalescence point, which we call the crisis-disappearance point. Beyond this point, the chaotic orbit will no longer contact unstable periodic orbits, leading to the disappearance of the boundary crisis. Besides, the crisis-disappearance points associated with interior crises and merging crises are also uncovered.

Abstract:In this paper we give analytic proofs of the existence of transversal homoclinic points for a family of non-globally smooth diffeomorphisms having the origin as a fixed point which come out as a truncated map governing the local dynamics near a critical period three cycle associated to the Secant map. Using Moser's version of Birkhoff-Smale's Theorem, we prove that the boundary of the basin of attraction of the origin contains a Cantor-like invariant subset such that the restricted dynamics to it is conjugate to the full shift of $N$-symbols for any integer $N\ge 2$ or infinity.

Abstract:We have observed crises with new characteristics induced by discontinuity in a one-dimensional discontinuous map describing relaxation oscillators. There are four critical lines characterizing different types of new crises in the parameter plane(I d ,I i ). These have a common convergence at a non-differentiable vertex, near which a small parameter perturbation may induce drastic dynamical changes of the system.

Abstract:Dynamical fluctuations or rare events associated with atypical trajectories in chaotic maps due to specific initial conditions can crucially determine their fate, as the may lead to stability islands or regions in phase space otherwise displaying unusual behavior. Yet, finding such initial conditions is a daunting task precisely because of the chaotic nature of the system. In this work, we circumvent this problem by proposing a framework for finding an effective topologically-conjugate map whose typical trajectories correspond to atypical ones of the original map. This is illustrated by means of examples which focus on counterbalancing the instability of fixed points and periodic orbits, as well as on the characterization of a dynamical phase transition involving the finite-time Lyapunov exponent. The procedure parallels that of the application of the generalized Doob transform in the stochastic dynamics of Markov chains, diffusive processes and open quantum systems, which in each case results in a new process having the prescribed statistics in its stationary state. This work thus brings chaotic maps into the growing family of systems whose rare fluctuations -- sustaining prescribed statistics of dynamical observables -- can be characterized and controlled by means of a large-deviation formalism.

Dynamic Phase Transition from Localized to Spatiotemporal Chaos in Coupled Circle Map with Feedback

Abstract:We investigate coupled circle maps in presence of feedback and explore various dynamical phases observed in this system of coupled high dimensional maps. We observe an interesting transition from localized chaos to spatiotemporal chaos. We study this transition as a dynamic phase transition. We observe that persistence acts as an excellent quantifier to describe this transition. Taking the location of the fixed point of circle map (which does not change with feedback) as a reference point, we compute number of sites which have been greater than (less than) the fixed point till time t. Though local dynamics is high-dimensional in this case this definition of persistence which tracks a single variable is an excellent quantifier for this transition. In most cases, we also obtain a well defined persistence exponent at the critical point and observe conventional scaling as seen in second order phase transitions. This indicates that persistence could work as good order parameter for transitions from fully or partially arrested phase. We also give an explanation of gaps in eigenvalue spectrum of the Jacobian of localized state.

Abstract:The famous doubling map (or dyadic transformation) is perhaps the simplest deterministic dynamical system exhibiting chaotic dynamics. It is a piecewise linear time-discrete map on the unit interval with a uniform slope larger than one, hence expanding, with a positive Lyapunov exponent and a uniform invariant density. If the slope is less than one, the map becomes contracting, the Lyapunov exponent is negative, and the density trivially collapses onto a fixed point. Sampling from these two different types of maps at each time step by randomly selecting the expanding one with probability p, and the contracting one with probability 1−p, gives a prototype of a random dynamical system. Here, we calculate the invariant density of this simple random map, as well as its position autocorrelation function, analytically and numerically under variation of p. We find that the map exhibits a non-trivial transition from fully chaotic to completely regular dynamics by generating a long-time anomalous dynamics at a critical sampling probability pc, defined by a zero Lyapunov exponent. This anomalous dynamics is characterized by an infinite invariant density, weak ergodicity breaking, and power-law correlation decay.

Abstract:In this paper, we mainly focus on the set of non-dense points of a dynamical system. We study the distributional chaos in such set. As for a mixing expanding map or a transitive Anosov diffeomorphism on a compact connected manifold, we prove that DC1 chaos can occur in a zero topological entropy subset of the intersection of the set of recurrent points and the set of the non-dense points. Also, for such dynamical systems, strongly distributional chaos (which is stronger than DC1 chaos) can occur in a zero topological entropy subset of the set of non-recurrent points. Besides, when we divide the total space into six layers according to the different statistical structures, similar results can appear in every layer. Our results can also be applied to mixing subshifts of finite type, -shifts, homoclinic classes and diffeomorphisms preserving a weakly mixing hyperbolic ergodic measure.
