Abstract:We study notions of generic and coarse computability in the context of computable structure theory. Our notions are stratified by the $\Sigma_\beta$ hierarchy. We focus on linear orderings. We show that at the $\Sigma_1$ level all linear orderings have both generically and coarsely computable copies. This behavior changes abruptly at higher levels; we show that at the $\Sigma_{\alpha+2}$ level for any $\alpha\in\omega_1^{ck}$ the set of linear orderings with generically or coarsely computable copies is $\mathbf{\Sigma}_1^1$-complete and therefore maximally complicated. This development is new even in the general analysis of generic and coarse computability of countable structures. In the process of proving these results we introduce new tools for understanding generically and coarsely computable structures. We are able to give a purely structural statement that is equivalent to having a generically computable copy and show that every relational structure with only finitely many relations has coarsely and generically computable copies at the lowest level of the hierarchy.

Abstract:Abstract In 1998 R. Downey formulated a problem: to describe a property $P$ of classical order types, which guarantees that if $\mathcal{L}$ is a low linear order and $P$ holds for the order type of $\mathcal{L}$ then $\mathcal{L}$ is isomorphic to a computable linear order. We find a new such property $P$. Also, we give an upper bound on a complexity of an isomorphism between computable and low copies and show that this bound is sharp.

Abstract:Any countable (infinite or not) linear (total) ordering can be represented by displaying all its elements on an axis in increasing order. Such a representation can be generated using only geometrical constructions based on coloured line segment extensions and rules to handle segment intersections. After a bounded time, the construction segments disappear and only the representation remains. The process starts with finitely many segments, so that unbounded acceleration effects are used to generate infinitely many segments for the representation. There is no outside machinery nor operator: any needed computation has to be carried out through the drawing. After providing some illustrative examples with ad hoc constructions, we prove our main results. One rational signal machine (bounded to use only rational coordinates) can generate the representation of any decidable linear ordering (i.e. the order between two elements is decidable by a Turing machine). In the general case, there is a signal machine able to generate the representation of any countable linear ordering (encoded in a real number).

Abstract:Abstract Let E be a computably enumerable (c.e.) equivalence relation on the set ω of natural numbers. We say that the quotient set $\omega /E$ (or equivalently, the relation E) realizes a linearly ordered set ${\cal L}$ if there exists a c.e. relation ⊴ respecting E such that the induced structure ( $\omega /E$ ; ⊴) is isomorphic to ${\cal L}$ . Thus, one can consider the class of all linearly ordered sets that are realized by $\omega /E$ ; formally, ${\cal K}\left( E \right) = \left\{ {{\cal L}\,|\,{\rm{the}}\,{\rm{order}}\, - \,{\rm{type}}\,{\cal L}\,{\rm{is}}\,{\rm{realized}}\,{\rm{by}}\,E} \right\}$ . In this paper we study the relationship between computability-theoretic properties of E and algebraic properties of linearly ordered sets realized by E. One can also define the following pre-order $ \le _{lo} $ on the class of all c.e. equivalence relations: $E_1 \le _{lo} E_2 $ if every linear order realized by E 1 is also realized by E 2. Following the tradition of computability theory, the lo-degrees are the classes of equivalence relations induced by the pre-order $ \le _{lo} $ . We study the partially ordered set of lo-degrees. For instance, we construct various chains and anti-chains and show the existence of a maximal element among the lo-degrees.

Abstract:It is shown that there exists a low(2) Harrington non-splitting base-that is a low(2) computably enumerable (c,e,) degree a such that for an c,e, degrees x, y, if 0' = x boolean OR y, then either 0' = x boolean OR a or 0' = y boolean OR a. Contrary to prior expectations, the standard Harrington non-splitting construction is incompatible with the low(2)-ness requirements to be satisfied. and the proof given involves new techniques with potentially wider application.

Abstract:It is shown that for any computably enumerable (c.e.) degree w \mathbf {w} , if w ≠ 0 \mathbf {w\not =0} , then there is a c.e. degree a \mathbf {a} such that ( a ∨ w ) ′ = a = 0 \mathbf {(a\lor w)’} = \mathbf {a}= \mathbf {0} (so a \mathbf {a} is low 2 _2 and a ∨ w \mathbf {a\lor w} is high). It follows from this and previous work of P. Cholak, M. Groszek and T. Slaman that the low and low 2 _2 c.e. degrees are not elementarily equivalent as partial orderings.

Abstract:We investigate sigma-entangled linear orders and narrowness of Boolean algebras. We show existence of sigma-entangled linear orders in many cardinals, and we build Boolean algebras with neither large chains nor large pies. We study the behavior of these notions in ultraproducts.

Abstract:The shuffle of a non-empty countable set $ S $ of linear orders is the (unique up to isomorphism) linear order $ \Xi(S) $ obtained by fixing a coloring function $ \chi: \mathbb{Q} \to S $ having fibers dense in $ \mathbb{Q} $ and replacing each rational $ q $ in $ (\mathbb{Q}, <) $ with an isomorphic copy of $ \chi(q) $. We prove that any two countable shuffles that embed as convex subsets into each other are order isomorphic.

On minimal non-$σ$-scattered linear orders

Abstract:The purpose of this article is to give new constructions of linear orders which are minimal with respect to being non-$\sigma$-scattered. Specifically, we will show that Jensen's principle $\diamondsuit$ implies that there is a minimal Countryman line, answering a question of Baumgartner. We also produce the first consistent examples of minimal non-$\sigma$-scattered linear orders of cardinality greater than $\aleph_1$, as given a successor cardinal $\kappa^+$, we obtain such linear orderings of cardinality $\kappa^+$ with the additional property that their square is the union of $\kappa$-many chains. We give two constructions: directly building such examples using forcing, and also deriving their existence from combinatorial principles. The latter approach shows that such minimal non-$\sigma$-scattered linear orders of cardinality $\kappa^+$ exist for every cardinal $\kappa$ in Gödel's constructible universe, and also (using work of Rinot) that examples must exist at successors of singular strong limit cardinals in the absence of inner models satisfying the existence of a measurable cardinal $\mu$ of Mitchell order $\mu^{++}$.

Abstract:This is a short article based on the plenary lecture presented by the author at Algebra Computability and Logic conference in Kazan, June 1–6, 2014. The paper is a new approach that introduces effectiveness into the study of algebraic structures. In this approach the initial objects are the domains of the form ω/E, where E is an equivalence relation on ω. In this set-up one investigates effective algebraic structures that are admitted by domains of the formω/E. This lecture was motivated by the papers [2, 20, 21], open questions in [17], and is based on the papers [15, 16, 19, 23].

Abstract:It is well-known that every transitive linear order is exponentiable. However, is the converse true? This question was posed in Chapter 8 of the textbook titled "Linear Orderings" by Rosenstein. We define the class CTLO of cyclically transitive linear orders that properly contains the class of transitive linear orders, and show that all discrete unbounded orders in CTLO are exponentiable, thereby providing a negative answer to the question. The class CTLO is closely related to the class of transitive cyclic orders introduced by Droste, Giraudet and Macpherson. We also discuss the closure of subclasses of CTLO under products and iterated Hausdorff condensations.

Let X be subset of ω and XL be the image of X in the linear order L under the isomorphism between (ω,≤) and L. The degree spectrum of X is the set of all Turing degrees of XL as one runs over all computable presentations of (ω,≤). In this paper we study the degree spectra of subsets of ω.

The weakness of finding descending sequences in ill-founded linear orders

Abstract:We explore the Weihrauch degree of the problems ``find a bad sequence in a non-well quasi order'' ($\mathsf{BS}$) and ``find a descending sequence in an ill-founded linear order'' ($\mathsf{DS}$). We prove that $\mathsf{DS}$ is strictly Weihrauch reducible to $\mathsf{BS}$, correcting our mistaken claim in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2010.03840" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2010.03840">arXiv:2010.03840</a>]. This is done by separating their respective first-order parts. On the other hand, we show that $\mathsf{BS}$ and $\mathsf{DS}$ have the same finitary and deterministic parts, confirming that $\mathsf{BS}$ and $\mathsf{DS}$ have very similar uniform computational strength. We prove that König's lemma $\mathsf{KL}$ and the problem $\mathsf{wList}_{2^{\mathbb{N}},\leq\omega}$ of enumerating a given non-empty countable closed subset of $2^{\mathbb{N}}$ are not Weihrauch reducible to $\mathsf{DS}$ or $\mathsf{BS}$, resolving two main open questions raised in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2010.03840" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2010.03840">arXiv:2010.03840</a>]. We also answer the question, raised in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1804.10968" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1804.10968">arXiv:1804.10968</a>], on the existence of a ``parallel quotient'' operator, and study the behavior of $\mathsf{BS}$ and $\mathsf{DS}$ under the quotient with some known problems.

Abstract:The lefthanded Lovász local lemma (LLLL) is a generalization of the Lovász local lemma (LLL), a powerful technique from the probabilistic method. We prove a computable version of the LLLL and use it to effectivize a collection of results on the existence of certain types of non-repetitive sequences via the LLL and LLLL. This represents the first constructive proof of these results.

Abstract:Computability logic (CL) (see <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~giorgi/cl.html" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>) is a semantical platform and research program for redeveloping logic as a formal theory of computability, as opposed to the formal theory of truth which it has more traditionally been. Formulas in CL stand for (interactive) computational problems, understood as games between a machine and its environment; logical operators represent operations on such entities; and "truth" is understood as existence of an effective solution, i.e., of an algorithmic winning strategy. The formalism of CL is open-ended, and may undergo series of extensions as the study of the subject advances. The main groups of operators on which CL has been focused so far are the parallel, choice, branching, and blind operators. The present paper introduces a new important group of operators, called sequential. The latter come in the form of sequential conjunction and disjunction, sequential quantifiers, and sequential recurrences. As the name may suggest, the algorithmic intuitions associated with this group are those of sequential computations, as opposed to the intuitions of parallel computations associated with the parallel group of operations: playing a sequential combination of games means playing its components in a sequential fashion, one after one. The main technical result of the present paper is a sound and complete axiomatization of the propositional fragment of computability logic whose vocabulary, together with negation, includes all three -- parallel, choice and sequential -- sorts of conjunction and disjunction. An extension of this result to the first-order level is also outlined.

The semigroup of finite partial order isomorphisms of a bounded rank of an infinite linear ordered set

Abstract:We study algebraic properties of the semigroup $\mathscr{O\!\!I\!}_n(L)$ of finite partial order isomorphisms of the rank $\leq n$ of an infinite linearly ordered set $(L,\leqslant)$. In particular we describe its idempotents, the natural partial order and Green's relations on $\mathscr{O\!\!I\!}_n(L)$. It is proved that the semigroup $\mathscr{O\!\!I\!}_n(L)$ is stable and it contains tight ideal series. Moreover, we show that the semigroup $\mathscr{O\!\!I\!}_n(L)$ admits only Rees' congruences and every its homomorphic image is a semigroup with tight ideal series.

Abstract:We present a new construction of indecomposable type 0 Abelian groups of rank 2. The new construction is used to study degree spectra of such groups. As a corollary, we obtain a new computability-theoretic proof showing that there exist continuum many nonisomorphic type 0 indecomposable Abelian groups of rank 2.
