Abstract:Purpose To observe the disturbance of the guirea pigs inner ear following the anterior semicircular canals transection and plugging. Methods Sixteen mixed-coloured guinea pigs with single anterior semicircular canal excision were used and divided randomly into 4 groups in our study,The auditory function was assessed by measuring the auditory brainstem response(ABR)thresholds. The animal's behavior and the inner ear morphological study were oberserved after the surgery. On 7 days,28 days the animals were killed and the cochleas were stained with AgNO3 or processed to obtain section from plastic embedded ears. Results The guinea pigs'head inclined to the operative side and walked unsteadly two or three days after the surgery, then recovered.ABR showed that the operations had httle effect on the ABR thresholds after a long time and there was significant difference between preoperation and the postoperation moment.Histologically, there was intraluminal fibrosis and inflammation surround surgical field. Most specimens showed normal cochlear anatomy and hair cell counts. The inner or out hair cell analysis showed no statistical diffrence before and after surgery. Conclusion The excision of the anterior semicircular canal is a safe procedure with little effect on the hearing and vestibular function.(Chin J Ophthalmol and Otorhinolaryngology,2005,5:350~352)
