A national analysis of trachoma prevention and control among primary and high school students in 2000

Abstract:Objective To identify the status and tendency of trachoma prevention and control among Chinese primary and high school students in 28 provinces,and to provide further preventive strategies of trachoma prevention.Methods Students were divided into various geographic-and age-groups.The cover rates of surveillance,detecting rates of trachoma infection,and accepting rates of therapy were analyzed among different groups.Results Detecting rates of trachoma infection were 7.53% and 8.04% for urban and rural students in 2000,which were significantly lower than that(10.57% and 13.97%) in 1995.Relative high detecting rates of trachoma were found in the rural primary and junior middle school students.The lowest accepting rate of therapy was found in the urban primary students.Conclusions SAFE strategies of trachoma prevention suggested by WHO need to be spread over the country so as to reinforce health education on the trachoma prevention.
