Abstract:Product harm crises are among a firm's worst nightmares.Brand equity is an important but fragile asset,which is easy to suffer loss in product harm crises.The mounting frequency of product harm crises and ill-prepared corporate response to such crises can have profound consequences for brand equity.Based on whether the product defects is a violation of regulation or safety standards,the product harm crises can be divided into two categories:defensible and indefensible product harm crises.This article discusses how to respond defensible product harm crises appropriately.By analyzing real defensible product harm crises in China,we found that companies responded to these crises differently,implying that they didn't reach consensus on which response was the best to protect brand equity in defensible product harm crises.To resolve the question that which response strategy is the most effective to protect brand equity in defensible product harm crises,this paper explores the impacts of response strategy,3rd part clarification,company reputation and psychological risk on brand equity.We implemented a 4(response strategy:defensive,attack,justification & accommoda-tive) × 2(company reputation:good & bad) × 2(3rd part clarification:with & without) between-group design,and empirical results are:(1) defensive response is the best,accommodative response is the worst,with other responses in the middle;(2) a 3rd part's clarification is more persuasive than that of companies and would narrow differences of company responses;(3) company reputation plays a positive moderating role,but only when the company implement defensive response and a 3rd part's clarification is available;(4) psychological risk is identified as a key mediator of brand equity in product harm crisis context,which indicates that response strategy,company reputation and 3rd part clarification impact on brand equity through psychological risk.These findings would help companies to better understand and protect their brand equities in defensible product harm crises.
