Abstract:It is shown that in a topological dynamical system with positive entropy, there is a measure-theoretically “rather big” set such that a multivariant version of mean Li–Yorke chaos happens on the closure of the stable or unstable set of any point from the set. It is also proved that the intersections of the sets of asymptotic tuples and mean Li–Yorke tuples with the set of topological entropy tuples are dense in the set of topological entropy tuples respectively.

Abstract:It is an open problem whether a homeomorphism on a compact metric space satisfying that each proper pair is either positively or negatively Li--Yorke, called completely Li--Yorke chaotic, can have positive entropy. In the present paper, an affirmative answer to this question is given. In fact, for each homeomorphism $T$ with positive entropy such that each proper pair is not two-sided asymptotic, a completely Li--Yorke chaotic homeomorphism with positive entropy associated with the given homeomorphism can be constructed.

Abstract:It is shown that there exist systems having almost specification property and zero entropy. Since Bowen has shown that systems with specification property must have positive entropy, this result reveals further the difference between almost specification and specification. Moreover, one can obtain a both sufficient and necessary condition to ensure positive entropy for systems with almost specification property.

Abstract:The notion of Δ-weakly mixing set is introduced and studied. It is proved that Δ-weakly mixing sets share many properties with weakly mixing sets, in particular, if a dynamical system has positive topological entropy, then the collection of Δ-weakly mixing sets is residual in the closure of the collection of entropy sets in the hyperspace. The existence of Δ-weakly mixing sets in a topological dynamical system admitting an ergodic invariant measure which is not measurable distal is obtained. These results generalize several well known results and also answer several open questions.

Abstract:. The paper consists of two parts. In the first part, we study topological and measure-theoretical entropies of a nonautonomous dynamical system via the ideas of local entropy theory. We prove local and global variational inequalities in Theorem 3.5, which relates to the topological entropy of a nonautonomous dynamical system to its measure-theoretical entropy. Consequently, we answer affirmatively the second part of [26, Question 3.7] asked by Zhu et al. in 2012. We also show that, in general, the answer to the first part of [26, Question 3.7] is negative. In the second part, we introduce weak expansiveness for a nonautonomous system following the ideas of Bowen [4] and Misiurewicz [15]. For further understanding of the weak expansiveness of a nonautonomous system, we also introduce and study the concept of topological conditional entropy for such class of dynamical system along the lines of Misiurewicz [17]. We give a simple link relating weak expansiveness of a nonautonomous system to its topological conditional entropy. We end this paper with Question 4.8 for further understanding these concepts of a nonautonomous system.

Abstract:The properties of topological dynamical systems (X,T) which are disjoint from all minimal systems of zero entropy, M-0, are investigated. Unlike the measurable case, it is known that topological K-systems make up a proper subset of the systems which are disjoint from M-0. We show that (X,T) has an invariant measure with full support, and if in addition (X, T) is transitive, then (X, T) is weakly mixing. A transitive diagonal system with only one minimal point is constructed. As a consequence, there exists a thickly syndetic subset of Z(+), which contains a subset of Z(+) arising from a positive entropy minimal system, but does not contain any subset of Z(+) arising from a zero entropy minimal system. Moreover we study the properties of topological dynamical systems (X,T) which are disjoint from larger classes of zero entropy systems.

Abstract:The repetition property of a dynamical system, a notion introduced in Boshernitzan and Damanik (Commun Math Phys 283:647–662, 2008), plays an importance role in analyzing spectral properties of ergodic Schrödinger operators. In this paper, entropy of dynamical systems with repetition property is investigated. It is shown that the topological entropy of dynamical systems with the global repetition property is zero. Minimal dynamical systems having both topological repetition property and positive topological entropy are constructed. This provides a class of ergodic Schrödinger operators with potentials generated by positive entropy minimal dynamical systems that, in contrast to common beliefs, admit no eigenvalues.

Abstract:We define the entropy of an infinite family C\mathcal {C} of measurable sets in a probability space, and show that a family has zero entropy if and only if it is totally bounded under the symmetric difference semi-metric. Our principal result is that the mean ergodic theorem holds uniformly for C\mathcal {C} under every ergodic transformation if and only if C\mathcal {C} has zero entropy. When the entropy of C\mathcal {C} is positive, we establish a strong converse showing that the uniform mean ergodic theorem fails generically in every isomorphism class, including the isomorphism classes of Bernoulli transformations. As a corollary of these results, we establish that every strong mixing transformation is uniformly strong mixing on C\mathcal {C} if and only if the entropy of C\mathcal {C} is zero, and we obtain a corresponding result for weak mixing transformations.

Abstract:We show that for every topological dynamical system with the approximate product property, zero topological entropy is equivalent to unique ergodicity. Equivalence of minimality is also proved under a slightly stronger condition. Moreover, we show that unique ergodicity implies the approximate product property if the system has periodic points.

Abstract:The notions of entropy sequences and entropy sets are introduced both in topological and measure-theoretical situations. It turns out that a subset is an entropy set if and only if each n-tuple (not on the diagonal) from the set is an entropy n-tuple and that each maximal entropy set is closed. The systems with only one maximal entropy set are characterized. Moreover, it is proved that if a topological system has positive entropy, then there is a maximal entropy set with uncountably many points, and the topological entropy is the supremum of the entropies over all maximal entropy sets. An example with a maximal entropy set containing only two points is given.
Typical Positivity of Nonequilibrium Entropy Production for Pure States

Abstract:We establish that the nonequilibrium dynamics of most pure states gives rise to the same entropy production as that of the corresponding ensemble, provided the effective dimension of the ensemble is large enough. This establishes the positivity of entropy production under a wide variety of nonequilibrium situations. Our results follow from dynamical typicality and suitable continuity properties alone, without relying on non-integrability, and they complement other recent efforts to establish "pure state second laws". An explicit comparison with the distinctively different two-point measurement scheme is also provided.

Abstract:First notions of entropy point and uniform entropy point are introduced using Bowen's definition of topological entropy. Some basic properties of the notions are discussed. As an application it is shown that for any topological dynamical system there is a countable closed subset whose Bowen entropy is equal to the entropy of the original system.Then notions of C-entropy point are introduced along the line of entropy tuple both in topological and measure-theoretical settings. It is shown that each C-entropy point is an entropy point, and the set of C-entropy points is the union of sets of C-entropy points for all invariant measures.

Abstract:Let f : M -> M be a C-1 diffeomorphism with a dominated splitting on a compact Riemanian manifold M without boundary. We state and prove several sufficient conditions for the topological entropy of f to be positive. The conditions deal with the dynamical behaviour of the (non -necessarily invariant) Lebesgue measure. In particular, if the Lebesgue measure is (5 recurrent then the entropy of f is positive. We give counterexamples showing that these sufficient conditions are not necessary. Finally, in the case of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms, we give a positive lower bound for the entropy relating it with the dimension of the unstable and stable sub-bundles.

Abstract:We explore the relationship between Turing completeness and topological entropy of dynamical systems. We first prove that a natural class of Turing machines that we call "regular Turing machines" (which includes most of the examples of universal Turing machines) has positive topological entropy. We deduce that any Turing complete dynamics with a continuous encoding that simulates a universal machine in this class is chaotic. This applies to our previous constructions of Turing complete area-preserving diffeomorphisms of the disk and 3D stationary Euler flows. The article concludes with an appendix written by Ville Salo that introduces a method to construct universal Turing machines that are not regular and have zero topological entropy.

Abstract:The evolution of entropy is derived with respect to dynamical systems. For a stochastic system, its relative entropy $D$ evolves in accordance with the second law of thermodynamics; its absolute entropy $H$ may also be so, provided that the stochastic perturbation is additive and the flow of the vector field is nondivergent. For a deterministic system, $dH/dt$ is equal to the mathematical expectation of the divergence of the flow (a result obtained before), and, remarkably, $dD/dt = 0$. That is to say, relative entropy is always conserved. So, for a nonlinear system, though the trajectories of the state variables, say $\ve x$, may appear chaotic in the phase space, say $\Omega$, those of the density function $\rho(\ve x)$ in the new ``phase space'' $L^1(\Omega)$ are not; the corresponding Lyapunov exponent is always zero. This result is expected to have important implications for the ensemble predictions in many applied fields, and may help to analyze chaotic data sets.

In this paper, an example on a countable compactum X with ${h_{top}^{s}(T)\neq h_{top}^{s}(T|_{\Omega(T)})}$ is given.
