Abstract:Ancient DNA is DNA sequences extracted from ancient biological remains. This paper briefly reviews the 20-year history of ancient DNA study from its early period mainly with the technol- ogy of cloning to later use of PCR technology and the mature technology of extracting DNA from fossils. In the recent years, because of the emergence of many problems and fierce controversy in ancient DNA study, scientists began to consider the authenticity of ancient DNA and put forward some strict standards. Abstract:Cancer stem cells are characterized by undifferentiation,self-renewal,multi-lineage differentiation potential.Recently,several signal pathways including Wnt,Notch,Hedgehog,CXCR4-SDF-1 axis and PTEN have been demonstrated to be involved in the regulation of the biology of cancer stem cells.Accumulating evidence indicates that cancer stem cells are the main source of the epithelial part of tumors and mesenchymal stem cells are potential precursors for tumor stroma,thus there may be a pivotal interaction between cancer stem cells and mesenchymal stem cells.Insight into the mechanism regulating cancer stem cells will no doubt be important to facilitate the development of new molecular agents targeted cancer stem cells.

Abstract:Plant improvement and resolving complex traits of plant need to understand the germplasm diversity and hereditary basis of traits.With the development of genomics and biostatistics software,especially the extensive application of molecular markers in plant genetics and breeding,association analysis based on the linkage disequi-librium (LD) offers a new method for genetic study of plants quantitative characters and a new idea for molecular design breeding.In this paper,the basic statistic principles,strategies,characteristics and current successful appli-cations of association analysis in plants were reviewed.The potential application of association mapping to molec-ular dissection of plant traits and molecular breeding were also discussed.
ON HOMONYMY OF SPECIES-GROUP NAMES—ANALYSIS,TREATMENT AND INFLUENCES OF GENUS-NAME CHANGES

Abstract:This paper introduces how homonyms of species-group names should be treated according to the fourth edition of the ICZN (International Code of Zoological Nomenclature). Examples from the Oxyporinae, a rove beetle subfamily, are used to analyse and illustrate the influences of genus-group name changes on the homonymy of species-group taxa. In spite of the complex histories of some long-existing genus-group taxa, relevant taxonomic changes can be categorized into six different types, of which three are related to primary homonymy, two to secondary homonymy, and one has no longer anything to do with species-group homonymy. Some important changes in the fourth edition of the ICZN dealing with species homonymy are discussed, and their essential influences on stability and correctness of taxonomic names analyzed. The author hopes this paper will help authors avoid the creation of junior homonyms and also aid the rectification of existing problems of homonymy according to proper taxonomic principles and the ICZN guidelines.

Abstract:Terminology applied to the modes of vascular plant megafossil preservation is discussed in the paper. The problems about the terminology mainly concern the following two aspects: (1) the terms applied to fossilization are confused with those used for the modes of vascular plant megafossil preservation, and (2) different authors may have different interpretations to the same term. This practice is apt to cause confusion of understanding. The related discussions have been reviewed. The authors use the graphic approach in the classification and comparison of the modes of vascular plant megafossil preservation and suggest that terms used for the modes of vascular plant megafossil preservation should be reasonably distinguished from those applied to the fossilization to avoid confusion in the use of the terms to the best of our ability.

Abstract:Stem cells play a key role in development and homeostasis, regeneration and evolution. Over the past 150 years, the concept of stem cells has undergone significant changes, but the exact definition of stem cells is lacking. The review discusses significant properties of stem cells such as self-maintenance, regenerative reserve, aging, plasticity and heterogeneity. The stem cell concept evolves as the new methods and techniques to study the fundamental aspects of cell biology are developed. The problem of stem cell definition and prospects for its further study are discussed.

Abstract:With advancements in the field of cancer stem cells,the hypothesis that colon cancer originates from stem cells has not only been introduced but also receives substantial supports by separating a subpopulation of colon cancer cells through primitive cells markers.Unlike most non-tumourigenasis colon cancer cells,these tumor-initiating cells have many specific characters both in vitro and in vivo.An improved understanding of drug resistance based on cancer stem cells and molecular pathways that regulate proliferation and differentiation of gastrointestinal cancer stem cells could doubtless translate into new therapeutic strategies.

Abstract:Clubroot disease is caused by obligate biotrophic protist Plasmodiophora brassicae and is one of the most damaging for crucifer plants.Recently it has become a severe problem globally,especially in Europe,North America,East Asia and other regions.It is also threatening the normal vegetable supply in China in the near future.This review summarizes recent advances in the field of the physiological,biochemical and molecular basis of root gall formation,inheritance of clubroot resistance,molecular markers and its genetic maps in crucifer crops.Finally,future research direction of clubroot resistance are proposed.

Abstract:Crustose coralline algae (CCA) are important ecosystem engineers and carbonate producers today and in the geological past. While there is an increasing number of publications on CCA every year, it is evident that there are many misunderstandings and inconsistencies in the assignment of CCA to taxonomic and functional groups. This is partly because CCA are treated by biologists, ecologists and palaeontologists as well as covered by studies published in journals ranging from geo- to biosciences, so that there is often a mixture of terminology used and differing scientific focus. In this review, a comprehensive overview is given on what is known about CCA, their functional traits and their roles in environments from the present and the past. In this context, some bridges are built between the commonly different viewpoints of ecologists and palaeontologists, including suggesting a common and straightforward terminology, highlighting and partially merging different taxonomic viewpoints as well as summarizing the most important functional traits of CCA. Ideally, future studies should seek to quantitatively analyse potential implications for CCA and their associated organisms under ongoing global change.

Abstract:The mammalian crown originated during the Mesozoic and subsequently radiated into the substantial array of forms now extant. However, for about 100 million years before the crown’s origin, a diverse array of stem mammalian lineages dominated terrestrial ecosystems. Several of these stem lineages overlapped temporally and geographically with the crown mammals during the Mesozoic, but by the end of the Cretaceous crown mammals make up the overwhelming majority of the fossil record. The progress of this transition between ecosystems dominated by stem mammals and those dominated by crown mammals is not entirely clear, in part due to a distinct separation of analyses and datasets. Analyses of macroevolutionary patterns tend to focus on either the Mammaliaformes or the non-mammalian cynodonts, with little overlap in the datasets, preventing direct comparison of the diversification trends. Here I analyse species richness and biogeography of Synapsida as a whole during the Mesozoic, allowing comparison of the patterns in the mammalian crown and stem within a single framework. The analysis reveals the decline of the stem mammals occurred in two discrete phases. The first phase occurred between the Triassic and Middle Jurassic, during which the stem mammals were more restricted in their geographic range than the crown mammals, although within localities their species richness remained at levels seen previously. The second phase was a decline in species richness, which occurred during the Lower Cretaceous. The results show the decline of stem mammals, including tritylodontids and several mammaliaform groups, was not tied to a specific event, nor a gradual decline, but was instead a multiphase transition.

Abstract:The present article briefly reviewed the prevailing species concepts, especially biological, genetic, evolutionary, phylogenetic, ecological, and several taxonomic species concepts. The former five reflect the properties of species from diverse aspects and in different degrees, while taxonomic species concepts all contain more or less subjective elements, except for Hedberg's taxonomic method (not species concept). Thus far, there is no species concept that is both theoretically rational and practically operable. The present article outlined recent studies on the genus Paeonia L. (Paeoniaceae) in biology, particularly in morphology, biogeography, molecular phylogeny, and reproductive behavior, which provided insight into the relationship between variation of morphological characters and phylogeny. Taking the study on Paeonia L. as a case, referring to studies on some other plant groups, and incorporating the merits of the prevailing species concepts into our consideration, "gen‐morph species concept" is proposed here formally as new for outbreeding organisms. The new species concept has three special features: 1) a bridge linking morphological aspect with genetic and other aspects of species; 2) proposal of a concrete morphological criterion for species definition, and 3) considering quantitative and qualitative characters as equally valuable for species definition and introducing statistics into the concept to handle such characters. Abstract:In both plants and animals, regeneration requires the activation of stem cells. This is possibly related to the origin and requirements of multicellularity. Although long diverged from a common ancestry, plant and animal models such as Arabidopsis, Drosophila and mouse share considerable similarities in stem cell regulation. This includes stem cell niche organisation, epigenetic modification of DNA and histones, and the role of small RNA machinery in differentiation and pluripotency states. Dysregulation of any of these can lead to premature ageing, patterning and specification defects, as well as cancers. Moreover, emerging basal animal and plant systems are beginning to provide important clues concerning the diversity and evolutionary history of stem cell regulatory mechanisms in eukaryotes. This review provides a comparative framework, highlighting both the commonalities and differences among groups, which should promote the intelligent design of artificial stem cell systems, and thereby fuel the field of biomaterials science.
[Effects of Change of Crown Contour on Health of Gingiva].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To study the effects of different excessive crown contours on the health of periodontium.METHODS:A total of 63 posterior teeth of 12 volunteers were randomly divided into three groups and each group was consisted of 21 teeth. The buccal surfaces of the teeth were overcontoured 0.2 mm, 0.5 mm, and 0.8 mm respectively. At the point of 1 week, 4 weeks and 8 weeks, gingival cervical fluid (GCF) were collected, GCF-aspartate aminotransferase (GCF-AST) and GCF-alkaline phosphatase (GCF-ALP) levels were tested and the debris amount was assessed for three groups.RESULTS:The 0.8 mm group presented most amount of GCF, highest level of GCF-AST, GCF-ALP and most debris. The 0.5 mm group was the second. When the excess was 0.2 mm, all indexes showed no statistically significant change.CONCLUSIONS:Excessive crown contour is unfavourable to periodontium health. The more the teeth are excessively contoured, the more they impair periodontium.

Abstract:This article discussed, in the following three aspeccts, the standing of occlusion, gnathology and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in stomatology. And meanwhile highlighted the important meanings for every stomatologists. Firstly, from the history of dentistry or stomatology, the establishment of occlusion and gnathology drived the transformation of dentistry from a craft practice into an independent profession and discipline. Secondly, from the evolution of occlusion, jaw, and TMJ, this article clarified the distinctiveness and uniqueness of occlusion, jaw and TMJ that made modern human beings the most highly endowed. Thirdly, teeth and other oral organs not only have masticatory and digestive functions but also possess more complex social functions. Stomatognathic system is a more accurate conception than oral organs which is usually called. The conception of stomatognathic system gives a clearer sense of wholeness and more beneficial for accurate diagnosis and treatment of occlusion-related diseases as well as temporomandibular disorders. Finally, the author introduced five common examples regarding medical care and patient-doctor relationships in order to further emphasize the significance of the study of occlusion, gnathology and TMJ. It is necessary for not only general stomatoloaists but also other dental specialists in stomatology to clearly understand the principal theories and proficiently master the management capability on occlusion, gnathology and temporomandibular disorders.

Abstract:The authors reviewed the research of planation surface in recent years and commented on the development of method and theory about the planation surface. Some aspects of research, such as the restrictive planation surface, the karst planation surface, the fossil planation surface, the dating of weathering crust, the research of weathering crust and environmental evolution, extremely enriched the method and theory of the planation surface. Besides, the authors pointed out that we must take further steps to study the following issues: the deformation of planation surface, the original height of planation surface, the recognition and contrast of the planation surface. The weathering crust and planation surface should be regarded as a whole, and it will still be a principal aspect in the future.

Abstract:Identification of fossil corals is often limited due to poor preservation of external skeleton morphology, especially in the genus Acropora which is widespread across the Indo‐Pacific. Based on skeleton characteristics from thin section, we here develop a link between the internal skeleton structure and external morphology. Ten characteristics were summarized to distinguish Acropora and five related genera, including the type and differentiation of corallites, the skeleton nature of corallites (septa, columellae, dissepiments, wall), and calcification centers within septa. Acropora is distinctive for its dimorphic corallites: axial and radial. Isopora is similar to Acropora but possess more than a single axial corallites. Montipora and Astreopora (family Acroporidae) have monomorphic corallites and a synapticular ring wall, with clustered calcification center in the former and medial lines in the latter. Pocillopora and Porties are classified by distinctive dissepiments, columellae and septa. These microstructural skeleton characteristics were effective in the genus identification of fossil corals from drilled cores in the South China Sea. Eighteen detailed characteristics (ten of axial corallites, four of radial corallites, and four of coenosteum) were used in the Acropora species classification. The axial corallites size and structure (including corallite diameter, synapticular rings, and septa), the septa of radial corallites, and the arrangement of coenosteum were critical indicators for species identification. This identification guide can help paleoenvironmental and paleoecological analyses and modern coral reef conservation and restoration.

Abstract:Conservation paleobiology is a cross-disciplinary field that utilizes the geohistorical record of past life on Earth to inform present-day decisions in conservation and restoration and assist in planning for future natural resource management. However, information on how past ecosystems and species responded to environmental change over decadal to millennial timescales is rarely incorporated into conservation and restoration decision-making. To heighten awareness among conservation and restoration practitioners of the relevance of geohistorical data and to bridge the gap between research and implementation in conservation paleobiology, we proposed a Research Topic titled " Integrating Conservation Biology and Paleobiology to Manage Biodiversity and Ecosystems in a Changing World ". The 21 articles subsequently published demonstrate the diversity and breadth of geohistorical information available to resource management and the challenges of translating these results into conservation practice and policy. Here we discuss the lessons we learned from editing the Research Topic and suggest a pathway forward for conservation paleobiologists who aspire to generate actionable research results to solve current problems in biodiversity conservation and ecological restoration.

Abstract:The Halwaxiida is a clade proposed by Conway Morris and Caron(2007) consisting of the sclerite-bearing Cambrian metazoans Halkieria and Wiwaxia and related taxa.Phylogenetic affinities of halwaxiids however have been contentious. Recent description of newly discovered fossils sheds fresh light on halwaxiids but also raises more questions.The key unresolved questions are: Do halkieriids and wiwaxiids actually belong together to a monophyletic group? Alternatively,are halkieriids stem group lophotrochozoans,crown group mollusks or crown group annelids? Or are wiwaxiids stem group mollusks or stem group annelids? There is a need for more fossil materials,and more rigorous cladistic analysis,which may lead to a better understanding of relevant homologies,as well as answers to the questions mentioned above.The answers will help clarify the phylogeny of halwaxiids,eventually unveiling the early evolutionary history of annelids,mollusks,and other lophotrochozoans.
