Abstract:This paper is concerned with finite difference solutions of a class of fourth-order nonlinear elliptic boundary value problems. The nonlinear function is not necessarily monotone. A new monotone iterative technique is developed, and three basic monotone iterative processes for the finite difference system are constructed. Several theoretical comparison results among the various monotone sequences are given. A simple and easily verified condition is obtained to guarantee a geometric convergence of the iterations. Numerical results for a model problem with known analytical solution are given.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce an improved variational iteration method (VIM) for nonlinear second-order boundary value problems. The main advantage of this modification is that it can avoid additional computation in determining the unknown parameters in initial approximation when solving boundary value problems using the conventional VIM. Also, iterative sequences obtained using the improved VIM do satisfy the boundary conditions while iterative sequences obtained using conventional VIM may not, in general, satisfy the boundary conditions. Numerical results reveal that the improved method is accurate and efficient.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the fourth-order elliptic boundary value problems with nonmonotone nonlinear function. The existence and uniqueness of a solution is proven by the method of upper and lower solutions. A monotone iteration is developed so that the iteration sequence converges monotonically to a maximal solution or a minimal solution, depending on whether the initial iteration is an upper solution or a lower solution.

Abstract:By establishing the corresponding variational framework, and using the mountain pass theorem, linking theorem and Clark theorem in critical point theory, we give the existence of multiple solutions for a fourth-order difference boundary value problem with parameter. Under some suitable assumptions we obtain some results which ensure the existence of well precise interval of parameter for which the problem admits multiple solutions. Some examples are presented to illustrate the main results.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with some numerical methods for a fourth-order semilinear elliptic boundary value problem with nonlocal boundary condition. The fourth-order equation is formulated as a coupled system of two second-order equations which are discretized by the finite difference method. Three monotone iterative schemes are presented for the coupled finite difference system using either an upper solution or a lower solution as the initial iteration. These sequences of monotone iterations, called maximal sequence and minimal sequence respectively, yield not only useful computational algorithms but also the existence of a maximal solution and a minimal solution of the finite difference system. Also given is a sufficient condition for the uniqueness of the solution. This uniqueness property and the monotone convergence of the maximal and minimal sequences lead to a reliable and easy to use error estimate for the computed solution. Moreover, the monotone convergence property of the maximal and minimal sequences is used to show the convergence of the maximal and minimal finite difference solutions to the corresponding maximal and minimal solutions of the original continuous system as the mesh size tends to zero. Three numerical examples with different types of nonlinear reaction functions are given. In each example, the true continuous solution is constructed and is used to compare with the computed solution to demonstrate the accuracy and reliability of the monotone iterative schemes.

Abstract:In this paper, based on the reproducing kernel functions and iterative technique, a new sixth order iterative numerical scheme is presented for nonlinear fourth order boundary value problems(FOBVPs). Compared with the existing reproducing kernel functions based numerical techniques for boundary value problems, the present approach is implemented by using the reproducing kernel functions of the reproducing kernel Hilbert space with lower regularity. This leads to good stability of the proposed technique. The results of numerical examples also demonstrate that our approach has higher accuracy for nonlinear FOBVPs.

Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations

Abstract:In this article, we propose an iterative method based on the equation decomposition technique (1) for the numerical solution of a singular perturbation problem of fourth-order elliptic equation. At each step of the given method, we only need to solve a boundary value problem of second-order elliptic equation and a second-order singular perturbation problem. We prove that our approximate solution converges to the exact solution when the domain is a disc. Our numerical examples show the efficiency and accuracy of our method. Our iterative method works very well for singular perturbation problems, that is, the case of 0 < epsilon << 1, and the convergence rate is very fast. (c) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:A quartic B-spline method is proposed for solving the linear sixth order boundary value problems. The method converts the boundary problem to solve a system of linear equations and obtains coefficients of the corresponding B-spline functions. The method has the convergence of two order. It develops not only the quartic spline approximate solution but also the higher order approximate derivatives. Two numerical examples are presented to verify the theoretical analysis and show the validity and applicability of the method. Compared with other existing recent methods, the quartic B-spline method is a more efficient and effective tool.

Abstract:In this paper, a high-order numerical scheme based on quartic B-spline functions is proposed to solve derivative-dependent nonlinear singular boundary value problems. Convergence of the method is analysed. Five test problems are considered to illustrate the accuracy and efficiency of the method. The results obtained by present method are compared with those obtained by the uniform mesh cubic B-spline collocation (UCS) method [P. Roul and V.M.K. Abstract:In this paper we consider a fully fourth order nonlinear boundary value problem which models the bending equilibrium of an extensible beam. Firstly we establish the existence and uniqueness of solution under some easily verified conditions. Next, for finding the approximate solution we propose an iterative method at continuous level and prove its convergence. To numerically realize the iterative method we carry out its discretization with the use of difference schemes of the fourth order of accuracy. Finally, some examples demonstrate the applicability of the theoretical results and the efficiency of the iterative method.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to give a numerical treatment for a class of strongly nonlinear two-point boundary value problems. The problems are discretized by fourth-order Numerov's method, and a linear monotone iterative algorithm is presented to compute the solutions of the resulting discrete problems. All processes avoid constructing explicitly an inverse function as is often needed in the known treatments. Consequently, the full potential of Numerov's method for strongly nonlinear two-point boundary value problems is realized. Some applications and numerical results are given to demonstrate the high efficiency of the approach.

Abstract:This paper is Concerned with the existence, uniqueness, and method of Construction of a solution for a class of fourth-order and second-order multi-point boundary value problems. The multi-point boundary condition under consideration includes various commonly discussed boundary conditions, such as the standard two-point boundary condition, three or four-point boundary condition, and one-end multi-point boundary condition. The existence problem is based on the method of upper and lower solutions and its associated monotone iterations. Various verifiable sufficient conditions for the existence of maximal and minimal solutions, uniqueness of the solution, and a continuum of infinite number of constant solutions are given. Several examples are presented to illustrate the application of the existence and uniqueness results for both the fourth-order and the second-order problems.
