Expression of Ki-67 and MCM2 protein and their comparison in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract:Purpose To investigate the level of minichromosome maintenance 2 protein(MCM2) and Ki-67 expression in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and to compare the differences and correlation between them.Methods We examined the immunohistochemical staining of MCM2 and Ki-67 in 90 cases of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma,and quantified MCM2 and Ki-67 expression by calculating a labeling index(LI).The pattern and LI of MCM2 and Ki-67 expression in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma were compared.Results MCM2 and Ki-67 expressed in nearly all the 90 esophageal squamous cell carcinomas.Compared with the LI of Ki-67,the LI of MCM2 was higher.The difference of LI between MCM2 and Ki-67 was significant(P<0.05).A significant difference was found between MCM2 and Ki-67 LI and also between the differentiation degrees of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.In addition,the differences of MCM2 LI among the three grades of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma were significant(P<0.01).The difference of Ki-67 LI between the grades Ⅰ and Ⅲ of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma was also significant(P<0.01).Conclusion MCM2 is a better diagnostic marker for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma than Ki-67,and also useful in evaluating the degree of malignancy in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma,which helps predict the clinical prognosis.
