Abstract:Fifty five sessions of classroom instruction of expert and non-expert teachers were videotaped and then were coded in terms of the way and the content of classroom discourse.Compared to non-expert teachers, expert teachers asked more interpretive and comparative questions to students and tended to explore students' ideas, and the learning community of the whole class could decide if the answer was right or not.So the classroom discourse showed a pattern ofstudent statement—teacher questioning—student explaining. In contrast,non-expert teachers asked students more simple memorized and descriptive questions and the students' ideas were less examined, and teachers' evaluation dominated the students' reactions as well,so the discourse was typically showed to be a pattern ofteacher initiation—student response—teacher evalualion.
