Abstract:The aim of this paper is to extend the Morse theory for geodesics to the conical manifolds. We define these manifolds as submanifolds of $\R^n$ with a finite number of conical singularities. To formulate a good Morse theory we must use an appropriate definition of geodesic. The main theorem of this paper claims that, although the energy is nonsmooth, we can find a continuous retraction of its sublevels in absence of critical points. So, we can give a good definition of index for isolated critical values and for isolated critical points. We prove that Morse relations hold and, at last, we give a definition of multiplicity of geodesics which is geometrical meaningful.

Abstract:We give a Morse-theoretic characterization of simple closed geodesics on Riemannian $2$-spheres. On any Riemannian $2$-sphere endowed with a generic metric, we show there exists a simple closed geodesic with Morse index $1$, $2$ and $3$. In particular, for an orientable Riemannian surface we prove strong Morse inequalities for the length functional applied to the space of simple closed curves.

Abstract:We study properties of "hyperbolic directions" in groups acting cocompactly on properly convex domains in real projective space, from three different perspectives simultaneously: the (coarse) metric geometry of the Hilbert metric, the projective geometry of the boundary of the domain, and the singular value gaps of projective automorphisms. We describe the relationship between different definitions of "Morse" and "regular" quasi-geodesics arising in these three different contexts. This generalizes several results of Benoist and Guichard to the non-Gromov hyperbolic setting.

Existence and Morse Index of two free boundary embedded geodesics on Riemannian 2-disks with convex boundary

Abstract:We prove that a free boundary curve shortening flow on closed surfaces with a strictly convex boundary remains noncollapsed for a finite time in the sense of the reflected chord-arc profile introduced by Langford-Zhu. This shows that such flow converges to free boundary embedded geodesic in infinite time, or shrinks to a round half-point on the boundary. As a consequence, we prove the existence of two free boundary embedded geodesics on a Riemannian $2$-disk with a strictly convex boundary. Moreover, we prove that there exists a simple closed geodesic with Morse Index $1$ and $2$. This settles the free boundary analog of Grayson's theorem.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.

Abstract:Suppose that $\Sigma$ is a closed and oriented surface equipped with a Riemannian metric. In the literature, there are three seemingly distinct constructions of open books on the unit (co)tangent bundle of $\Sigma$, having complex, contact, and dynamical flavors, respectively. Each one of these constructions is based on either an admissible divide or an ordered Morse function on $\Sigma$. We show that the resulting open books are pairwise isotopic provided that the ordered Morse function is adapted to the admissible divide on $\Sigma$. Moreover, we observe that if $\Sigma$ has positive genus, then none of these open books are planar and furthermore, we determine the only cases when they have genus one pages.

Mapping Cone and Morse Theory

Abstract:On a smooth manifold, we associate to any closed differential form a mapping cone complex. The cohomology of this mapping cone complex can vary with the de Rham cohomology class of the closed form. We present a novel Morse theoretical description for the mapping cone cohomology. Specifically, we introduce a Morse complex for the mapping cone complex which is generated by pairs of critical points with the differential defined by gradient flows and an integration of the closed form over spaces of gradient flow lines. We prove that the cohomology of our cone Morse complex is isomorphic to the mapping cone cohomology and hence independent of both the Riemannian metric and the Morse function used to define the complex. We also obtain sharp inequalities that bound the dimension of the mapping cone cohomology in terms of the number of Morse critical points and the properties of the specified closed form. Our results are widely applicable, especially for any manifold equipped with a geometric structure described by a closed differential form. We also obtain a bound on the difference between the number of Morse critical points and the Betti numbers.

Abstract:In the study of closed geodesics, Marston Morse developed his theory on the calculus of variations in the large. The Morse inequalities, which link on one hand, the numbers of critical points in various types of a function, and on the other hand, the topological invariants of the underlying manifold, play an important role in Morse theory. Naturally, they provide an estimate for the number of critical points of a function by using the topology of the manifold. Hopefully, this topological method would deal with the existence and the multiplicity of solutions of certain nonlinear differential equations. However, in this theory, the manifold is compact, and the functions are assumed to be C2 and to have only nondegenerate critical points; all of these restrict the applications seriously. In contrast, Leray-Schauder degree theory has become a very useful topological method. In 1946, at the bicentennial conferences of Princeton University, there was much discussion of their contrast. M. Shiffman hoped that the two methods could be brought closer together “so that they may alter and improve each other, and also so that each may fill out the gaps in the scope of the other” [Pr]. Since then, great efforts have been made to extend the Morse theory. We only mention a few names of the pioneers as follows: R. Bott, E. Rothe, R. S. Palais, S. Smale, D. Gromoll, W. Meyer, A. Marino, and G. Prodi.

Abstract:We prove upper bounds for the Morse index and number of intersections of min-max geodesics achieving the $p$-widths of a closed surface. A key tool in our analysis is a proof that for a generic set of metrics, the tangent cone at any vertex of any finite union of closed immersed geodesics consists of exactly two lines. We also construct examples to demonstrate that multiplicity one does not hold generically in this setting. Specifically, we construct an open set of metrics on $S^2$ for which the $p$-width is only achieved by $p$ copies of a single geodesic.

Concordance of Morse functions on manifolds

Abstract:In this paper, the concordance of Morse functions is defined, and a necessary and sufficient condition for given two Morse functions to be concordant is presented and is compared with the cobordism criterion. Cobordism of Morse functions on smooth closed manifolds is an equivalence relation defined by using cobordisms of manifolds and fold maps. Given two Morse functions, it is important to decide whether they are cobordant or not, and this problem was first solved for surfaces and then for manifolds of general dimensions by Ikegami-Saeki, Kalmár, and Ikegami. On the other hand, for Morse functions on the same manifold, we can consider a stronger equivalence relation called concordance.

Abstract:In the previous paper [Ch1], we studied the Minimax Principle as well as the Ljusternik–Schnirelman category theory for harmonic maps with prescribed boundary data defined on Riemann surfaces by the heat flow method. In this paper, we shall continue our study on Morse theory. Our main results are the Morse inequalities (Theorem 1) for isolated harmonic maps, and the Morse handle body decomposition for nondegenerate harmonic maps (Theorem 2). These results are extensions of the work of K. Uhlenbeck [U1], where the harmonic maps are defined on manifolds without boundary, and are all assumed to be nondegenerate. Our method is based on the heat flow by which the deformation is constructed. In contrast to the perturbation method developed by K. Uhlenbeck [U1], our approach seems more direct than hers.

Abstract:We define a notion of Morse function and establish Morse theory-like theorems over offsets of any compact set in a Euclidean space at regular values of their distance function. Using non-smooth analysis and tools from geometric measure theory, we prove that the homotopy type of the sublevels sets of these Morse functions changes at a critical value by gluing exactly one cell around each critical point.

Abstract:Morse theory, which is one of the roots of differential topology, is a method to study topology of manifolds using functions on it. One of its main application is Morse inequality, which gives a relation between Betti number and the number of critical points of Morse function. The original proof (due to Morse) involves something more. That is it gives a way to find a homology group of a manifold using a Morse function. Variants of this idea appeared repeatedly in many important works by Thom, Smale, Milnor, etc. This point again appeared in Witten’s famous paper [W1] and call attentions of many mathematicians. Floer [Fl] (generalizing [CZ]) uses it to built a new infinite dimensional homology theory. There the moduli space of gradient lines played an essential role. One main point in [W1] is to regard Morse theory as a topological field theory. In fact, one may regard it as one dimensional topological field theory or quantum mechanics, while topological σ-model, Gauge field theory etc. are regarded as (topological) quantum field theories. The purpose of this paper is two fold. One is to push forward this point of view and shows that we can regard various operators of algebraic topology as n-point functions. We use several functions for this purpose while in finding homology one use a single Morse function.
