Abstract:Owning to the unique structure, the excellent physical and chemical properties, the superstrong mechanics performances and so on, carbon nanotubes had been attracting the interest of all over the world. As the basis of carbon nanotubes, single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs) have the better potential prospect in many fields, such as electron nano-devices, single electron devices, energy storage materials and so on. In this paper, the recent developments in the synthesis of SWCNTs were reviewed briefly, which included arc discharge, laser ablation, chemical vapor deposition and so on. At the same time, the crucial factors for the growth of SWCNTs were discussed.

Abstract:Hollow silica is a special type of novel inorganic material with one or more cavities inside. In addition to the excellent properties as with its solid counterparts, hollow silica exhibits unique characteristics, such as low density, high specific surface and good adsorption performance. Researchers have developed many routes to prepare mono-dispersed hollow silica with regular morphology. However, most studies focused on hollow silica spheres, ignoring the structural superiority of other hollow structures. Template synthesis is highly prominent due to its flexibility and versatility. What's more, it is suitable for the preparation of hollow silica with various morphologies. In this article, the research progress of template synthesis was firstly provided. Then different morphologies of hollow silica were introduced, including hollow spheres, hollow tubes, hollow cubes, etc. To better demonstrate the advantages and potential value of hollow silica materials, their performance in diverse applications were discussed. Finally, some perspectives on the future research and development of hollow silica were put forward.

Abstract:Previous research characterizes obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) as a complex neurobehavioral disorder that may have multiple etiologies (den Braber et al., 2008). This study analyzed neurocognitive function and change in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) to characterize OCD. Neurocognitive function and rCBF were examined in medically naïve patients with OCD and contrasted with controls. Results of this study indicated that the neurocognitive functions impaired in OCD are memory, attention, and executive function, which are primarily associated with the frontal and occipital lobes. Dysfunction in the basal ganglia and occipital lobes were associated with OCD and may be an etiological factor in the disorder.

Abstract:One-dimensional nanomaterials is a new type of photovoltaic materials with two-dimensional quantum confinement effects,excellent optical absorption properties and optical anti-reflective properties,which have potential applications in improving the photovoltaic performances of solar cells.In this paper,the optical absorption properties of one-dimensional nanowires and nanotubes are reviewed,the research progresses of Si-based nanowires,GaAs-based nanowires and cabon nanotubes applied in solar cells are reviewed emphatically.The problems in the past research and directions of future development of one-dimensional nanostructured solar cells are pointed out,such as optimization of manufacturing technology and configuration form of solar cells,improvement of interfacial characteristics and deeply reveal carriers transport mechanism of one dimensional nanostructured solar cell.

Abstract:Recent decades have witnessed many breakthroughs in research on carbon nanotubes (CNTs), particularly regarding controllable synthesis, production scale-up, and application advances for this material. This sp(2)-bonded nanocarbon uniquely combines extreme mechanical strength, exceptionally high electrical conductivity, as well as many other superior properties, making it highly attractive for fundamental research and industrial applications. Synthesis and mass production form the solid basis for high-volume applications of CNTs. During recent decades, CNT production capacity has reached more than thousands of tons per year, greatly decreasing the price of CNTs. Although the unique physiochemical properties of an individual CNT are stated repeatedly, manifestation of such unique properties in a macroscopic material, e.g., realization of high-strength CNT fibers, remains a great challenge. If such challenges are solved, many critical applications will be enabled. Herein we review the critical progress in the development of synthesis and scaled-up production methods for CNTs, and discuss advances in their applications. Scientific problems and technological challenges are discussed together.

Abstract:Semiconducting silicon nanowires (SiNWs) represent one of the most interesting research directions in nanoscience and nanotechnology, and have been successfully applied in the fields of biological sensing, lithium-ion battery, solar cells and so on, with capabilities of realizing structural and functional complexity through rational design and synthesis. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method is one of the most common methods in the bottom-up approach. This review provides a brief summary of SiNW synthesis through the CVD method in the past decade, which mainly divided into the single structured and complex structured SiNWs. The synthesis of single structured SiNWs includes intrinsic, doped, and super-long SiNWs. The synthesis of complex structured SiNWs includes the axial, radial heterostructures, kinked, and branched SiNWs.

Abstract:Halloysite is a natural nanosized tubular clay mineral that has many potentially important uses in different industrial fields. In this paper, the key structural characteristics and properties of halloysite and their related applications are comprehensively reviewed. Research advances on halloysite, especially those from the past 20years, are summarized with some critical comments. Attention is mainly paid to the structure and morphology of halloysite and their changes, the formation of tubular structures, the physicochemical properties, the surface chemical modifications, and the halloysite-based advanced materials and some related applications. Additionally, future prospects and key problems to be solved in halloysite studies are discussed. This review shed new light on both fundamental and applied studies that focused on halloysite.

Abstract:This article presents our recent work in the controlled synthesis of multiwalled (MWNT) and single-walled nanotubes (SWNT) with ordered architectures. The general synthesis approach involves chemical vapor deposition using rationally designed catalyst and substrates. The results include self-oriented MWNTs, individual SWNTs grown from controlled surface sites, and structures of suspended SWNTs along well-defined directions. The chemically derived nanotube architectures have opened up new possibilities in fundamental characterization and potential applications of nanotube materials. Systematic electron transport measurements are carried out to elucidate the electrical properties of various classes of SWNTs and to explore the physics in one-dimensional systems. High-performance electrical devices based on individual SWNTs are enabled by combining synthesis and microfabrication approaches.

Abstract:We have developed a robust method for the synthesis of silica nanotubes with controlled aspect ratios on a large scale by templating against rod-like nanocrystals. Crystalline nanorods of a nickel-hydrazine complex are first formed in reverse micelles by surfactant capping on side facets, and subsequent silica coating and selective etching give rise to silica nanotubes of high uniformity and yield. The length of the silica nanotubes is tunable in the range 37-340 nm and can reach as long as micrometers. Control of the length is conveniently achieved by tuning the hydrazine/nickel ratio, which affects the growth kinetics of the nanocrystal templates. The inner diameter of the silica nanotubes can be adjusted in the range 10-20 nm by choosing different surfactants. This method is unique in utilizing reverse micelles as discrete nanoscale reactors for the growth of nanocrystals, allowing for precise control of the features of the nanotubes and opening up new opportunities in the synthesis of novel anisotropic nanomaterials, construction of nanodevices, and potential drug delivery applications.

Abstract:The single-walled nanotube (SWNT) is an interesting nanostructure for fundamental research and potential applications. However, very few inorganic SWNTs are available to date due to the lack of efficient fabrication methods. Here we synthesize four types of SWNT: sulfide; hydroxide; phosphate; and polyoxometalate. Each type of SWNT possesses essentially uniform diameters. Detailed studies illustrate that the formation of SWNTs is initiated by the self-coiling of the corresponding ultrathin nanostructure embryo/building blocks on the base of weak interactions between them, which is not limited to specific compounds or crystal structures. The interactions between building blocks can be modulated by varying the solvents used, thus multi-walled tubes can also be obtained. Our results reveal that the generalized synthesis of inorganic SWNTs can be achieved by the self-coiling of ultrathin building blocks under the proper weak interactions.

Abstract:Colloidal nanoparticles with anisotropic architectures have attracted a variety of interest and attention due to different physical and chemical properties compared with the isotropic counterparts, making them promising candidates in many fundamental studies and practical applications. Particularly, carbon and silica-based anisotropic nanoparticles can be one stand out by combing both intrinsic merits of carbons and silica, such as structural stability, biocompatibility, large surface area, and ease of functionalization with the anisotropic structural complexity. In this review, we aim to provide an updated summary of the research related to the anisotropic carbon and silica-based nanostructures, covering both their synthesis and applications.

Abstract:The past ten years' research into carbon nanotubes and their related materials was summarized in the Nanocarbon Laboratory, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Tsinghua University. The floating catalytic method was used for synthesis of multiwalled carbon nanotubes, singlewalled carbon nanotubes, doublewalled carbon nanotubes and aligned carbon nanotube films. Characteristics of different carbon nanotubes were studied with respect to mechanics, electricity, composites, double layer capacitors, field emission, hydrogen storage and environmental protection. The results show that carbon nanotubes, with various mechanical, electric and adsorptive behavior, are potentially applicable to many fields.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) directly synthesized on surfaces are promising building blocks for nanoelectronics. The structures and the arrangement of the SWNTs on surfaces determine the quality and density of the fabricated nanoelectronics, implying the importance of structure controlled growth of SWNTs on surfaces. This review summarizes the recent research status in controlling the orientation, length, density, diameter, metallicity, and chirality of SWNTs directly synthesized on surfaces by chemical vapor deposition, together with a session presenting the characterization method of the chirality of SWNTs. Finally, the remaining major challenges are discussed and future research directions are proposed.
