Abstract:In the Chinese art song repertoire, “How can I help but think of you” has long enjoyed enormous prestige since its publication in the 1920s. The song is memorable not only because of its innovative use of language by Liu Bannong in the lyrics but also because of the ingenious arrangement of tonalities, forms, and melodies by Chao Yuen Ren in the music. This essay will be devoted to a cultural and empirical analysis of the song, with the aim of understanding the efforts made by eminent scholars at the early stage of modernization of Chinese music and language. To this end, we will first explore how the lyrics are structured phonetically and syntactically. Tonal complexity and ambiguity in the music will then be analyzed, followed by the discussion of qǐ-chéng-zhuǎn-hé in the musical form. The pentatonicism embedded in the song and its relationship with what generally makes music “sound Chinese” will also be examined. In the end, we will also review an essential concept, yìjìng (or mindscape), in Chinese aesthetics and philosophy to better appreciate how various components in the music and lyrics together contribute to the aesthetic success of the song.

Abstract:The Song Dynasty is a significant period of integration for peotry and muisc since their detachment in the Han Dynasty, as is evident in the combined exposition on peotry and music at the theoretic level, which is embodied not only in sketchy comments by Shen Kuo, Zheng Qiao and Wang Zhuo, et al but also in many concrete and profound discussions. As notes on the poets and poetry in the Song Dyansty involved musical instruments, musical compositions and previous commentaries on the msuic theory, the expo- sition on poets and poetry in the Song Dynasty is characterized by its incluison of discussions on music. Meanwhile, the exposition on muiseal instruments, musical compositions and musical poems has also led to a more vivid and concrete analysis of ＂verse＂ and ＂prose＂ in the poetic discussion of the Song Dynasty.

Abstract:When examining songs in Chinese literature, we can distinguish among literary, musical, and communal aspects of their circulation. Sanqu songs became popular in the form of musical texts in the Yuan and Ming dynasties, but the ci song lyrics, by the Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279) if not earlier, had already become a form of communal text in a broad sense. While relying on musical and literary aspects in the early stages of circulation, such ci song lyrics also became increasingly meaningful as social artifacts characterized by diverse forms of usage and participation, and they have been widely appreciated as a "literary-cultural phenomenon" unrelated to music per se. Standard histories of Chinese literature typically interpret the interaction between Song dynasty ci song lyrics and Yuan dynasty sanqu songs and song-drama as a natural evolution of literary forms. To be sure, these histories address the vitality of the musicality and popular nature of such songs while also paying attention to the artistic styles, inherent characters, and originality of sanqu song composition (tige xingfen). From such an analysis, however, we know very little about the textual forms and mechanisms of transmission of Yuan-Ming sanqu songs beyond the realm of music and songwriters. In this regard, this article explores whether it was possible for the ci song lyrics, as a literary genre of greater maturity and higher status, albeit divorced from music, to transfer its literary experience to sanqu songs. Such a line of inquiry is also relevant to the study of the survival of various forms of Chinese musical literature beyond their original environments. It also helps us think about the complex relationships between the musical and communal functions of ci song lyrics and sanqu songs.

Abstract:This text discusses the sacrificial songs that were produced at the beginning of west-Zhou Dynasty. On the basis of such discussion, the author put forward opinion: the songs of Song(颂)and Ya(雅) were cooperated in their sacrificial rites of Zhou Dynasty, and they played different ritual functions, were sung for the gods, while Ya for the people. At the same time, in people of Zhou's opinion, the scope of Song was enlarged from the name of songs for sacrificial rite of God to the category also including some songs for sacrificial rite of ancestors.

Abstract:New learning of studies of the Classics in the Song Dynasty began with Liu Chang's The Gong Shibi Commentary, and was greatly encouraged by Wang Zhi's Shi Zong Wen. Wang's interpretations of the classics are sometimes affected by his admiration for Tao Qian's lifestyle of seclusion. The outstanding achievement of Shi Zong Wen lies in the two interpretation methods in searching for meaning in accordance with feelings. The first method is that he degrades The Book of Songs and brings it to the category of history to establish connection with historical events and literary works of later ages; and the second is that the current customs and life experience are employed for the purpose of interpretation, to show that human feelings from ancient times do not differ much from those of the present.

Abstract:In the development of traditional Chinese drama, the word “drama' has its original meaning and its semantic changes. Because the relevant researchers in the 20th century ignored this fact, their textual researches about the origin of Xi-Qu ( traditional Chinese opera) are unilateral. Like the words “Xi” (play) and “Ju” (theater), the word “Xi-Ju” (drama) has two meanings, “to act” and “to play”. However, many researchers have paid attention only to the former and ignored the latter while tracing its origin. This is in fact a deduction of the idea that art originated from singing and dancing. That is why the traditional Chinese poetics of art, the cultural context of patriotism and practicability urged the “Xi-Qu” researchers in the 20th century to prefer the former to the latter. The meaning of “play” which “Xi-Qu” lacks is contained in “Xi-Ju”. Because of its compatibility, the word “Xi-Ju” embodies the spirit of culture and of traditional Chinese drama.

Abstract:This study investigates the dynamic equilibrium between music and language within art songs, as exemplified in Zhao Yuanren's New Poetry Collection . Zhao Yuanren, a modern musician with a strong background in both phonetics and music theory, serves as the focal point of our research. Our primary objective is to explore how the fusion of new poetry and melodic compositions in Zhao Yuanren's works imbues art songs with a vivid sense of national identity. Through the provision of quantitative data, this study contributes to the evolution of Chinese art songs in the contemporary era and offers insights into the cultural implications of the genre. To analyze the structural characteristics and phonetic elements presented in the melodies of the New Poetry Collection , we employ visual image analysis. Additionally, we conduct acoustic data analysis, focusing on parameters such as frequency (Hz), intensity (dB), and pitch (st), which enable us to visually represent the speech sound aspects embedded in musical compositions and vocal performances. Our findings suggest the following: (1) Quantitative linguistic methodologies, as applied through the lens of linguistic musicology, offer a valid theoretical framework for the examination of Chinese art songs. (2) The subset of art songs under scrutiny in this study demonstrates adherence to specific linguistic constraints in various ways. (3) The phonetic elements identified in this research hold the potential to nationalise art songs and may have broader applications in other artistic domains. This study injects a rational, empirically grounded approach into the traditional realm of musicological cantorial relationships, thus providing valuable empirical data for the nationalisation of art songs. These findings underscore the practical significance of Chinese culture as a national treasure and lend support to the flourishing of Chinese art songs while preserving their cultural identity.

Abstract:The relationship between music and Tang poetry is a topic of ongoing interest, usually approached from the perspective of individual genres. This article considers the relationships of three major genres of Tang poetry to music, morality, and one another to argue that musical and ethical considerations were important factors in the waxing and waning of those genres. By the mid-Tang, and perhaps much earlier, the musical system for Han and Six Dynasties yuefu poetry had been lost. Citing poems, critical writings, and histories of such poets as ShenYue, Yuan Jie, Bai Juyi, Yuan Zhen, and Li Qingzhao, however, this article shows how yuefu, shi, and quzi ci poets reappropriated the idea of "music bureau" pieces to experiment with, and stand in for, even older, Confucian ideals on the relationship of lyrics to music and morality. By citing examples where ethical considerations prompted poets and musicians to reinvent and reinterpret older forms, this article complicates the notion of a straight line of development from folk song to literati imitation to antiquarian exercise.

Abstract:Yang Zhishui's New Evidence for Descriptions of Names in the Book of Songs, Yao Xiao ou's The Three Odes in The Book of Songs and the Pre-Qin Ritual and Music Culture, and Li Shan's The Several Illustrated Pieces in Ya of The Book of Songs and the Partial Equivalence Discovered Hereafter between Ya and Song are, among other things, the key accomplishments in the studies of The Book of Songs in recent years. While they insist on the agreement between The Book of Songs and the ritual - music culture from different levels, these works also attempt to explore the actualities of The Three Hundred Pieces in The Book of Songs, and therefore are all aimed at their "primitiveness," burdened with the heavy load of tradition.

Abstract:The innovation in the system of rites and music in early Ming Dynasty focused on the revision of the Language. By emphasizing the political and religious functions of the Language,Emperor Zhu ignored the importance of music and the difference between refined and popular music. This tendency was further developed in Yongle and Jiajing periods. Combined with the system of Yanyue—a branch of rites and music,the style of popular literature like Ci and Qu gradually infiltrated into and greatly weakened the seriousness of the Language composition of rites and music. But from the perspective of literary history,this literary phenomenon improved the status and elegance of Sanqu,and had a profound impact on the performing style of drama in Ming Dynasty. Moreover,the popularity of the functional literary model with a background in the imperial academy system is a significant cause of the decay of Ci in the Ming Dynasty.

Abstract:The Qin Zheng, an ancient Chinese musical instrument, embodies centuries of cultural heritage and artistic expression. Amidst its strings, melodies resonate with stories of ancient China, reflecting the country’s rich history and cultural identity. The objective of this study is to analyze the Qin Zheng playing techniques of Zhou Wang in musical literacy development. The research investigates Zhou Wang’s historical development, pedagogical approach, and playing techniques through a qualitative analysis. The study focuses on the Xi’an Conservatory of Music as the primary research site, where Zhou Wang has taught and mentored students for over three decades. Key informants include Zhou Wang herself, her students, and colleagues in the field of Chinese musical education. Data analysis involves structured interviews, observations of performances and teaching sessions, and transcription of musical examples. The findings reveal Zhou Wang’s mastery of Qin Zheng techniques, including intricate right-hand and left-hand skills, and their significance in fostering musical literacy development. The study highlights the potential benefits of integrating music education, particularly traditional Chinese music like Qin Zheng, into curricula as a means to enrich students’ language skills, cognitive abilities, and emotional intelligence.

Yearbook for Traditional Music

Abstract:The tradition of scholarly native music research in China is centuries old, particularly in the areas of tuning and temperament, historiography, music typology, music archeology and repertory study. In the twentieth century, native musicologists continue this long established tradition and its methodologies. At the same time, and particularly from the early 1980s on, ethnomusicology from the West influenced Chinese musicologists. Theories and methods of ethnomusicology and anthropology began to appear in the writings of native scholars in their study of Chinese music. This new “-ology” is viewed as an addition to the more “traditional” Chinese musicology. What most native musicologists seem to be interested in is what parts of this new “-ology” are useful to the “Chinese” situation. Using both the more “traditional” and the “newer” methodologies, native scholars have invested great efforts in recent decades in collecting, compiling, analyzing, and comparing regional musical styles and repertories. The sum of these scholarly activities forms the foundation of Chinese musicology. Because of language barriers, these research activities were not widely known outside the country. The following report outlines some of these research activities.

Abstract:The phrase,shi yan zhi(poetry expressing aspirations)is ancient China's first ontology of poetry,and therefore its significance should be examined from the ontological perspective.This paper explores the historical context in which this theory is created in three respects:the maturity of the artistic form that integrates poetry,music,and dance,the es-tablishment of governance through an education system,and the establishment of an ethical system.This paper holds that as an ancient and classical theory,shi yan zhi was embraced and carried forward by the scholar-officials of the Spring and Autumn Period when reciting po-ems,and later was cited and further expanded by the pre-Qin philosophers.Zhi is the unique attribute of The Book of Odes to distinguish it from other classics.This paper also investigates the evolution history from shi yan zhi to the six music language skills and six forms of poetry described in"The Office of Spring"in The Rites of Zhou,as well as the six essential elements mentioned in the Introduction to Mao's Version of The Book of Odes,highlighting the contri-bution of"The Record of Music"in The Book of Rites to the development of shi yan zhi.

Abstract:The relevance of this topic is linked to the need to understand the way in which Asian countries develop theoretical musicology in active cross-cultural communication. This work examines Xiao Youmei (1884–1940), one of the most outstanding representatives of Chinese music culture in the first half of the XXth century. His contribution to Chinese music education and science include the organization of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music (1927), the upgrading of national musicology and the development of the first textbooks on music theory and history for training specialists. Of particular importance is Xiao Youmei's educational activities, related to the study of European music and the definition of the main directions in its research. The article mainly discusses the methods used by the Chinese musicologist in introducing European music to the students of the first music educational institutions in China. Theoretical and historical problems of European music are taught in Xiao Youmei’s textbooks: "Essays on the History of Western Music" (1920–1923), "General Musicology" (1928), "Harmony" (1932). They were distinguished by the following features: an overview principle of the presentation of the material, an expansion of the range of languages used by the term authors, several musical examples and a lack of scientific resources, which is explained by the stage of origin of the music educational system and scientific platform in China in the first decades of the XXth century. One of the main features of the content expressed in Xiao Youmei's textbooks is the correlation between various parameters of Chinese and European music. The paper provides examples illustrating the method of using the notions of one thinking system to explain the other (in the field of harmony, instrumental science). It is explained by the transitional stage in the formation of Chinese musicology — from the old system of notation to the new one.
