Abstract:Studies of the Song Dynasty gradually gained esteem among Republican scholars,but the scholars who admired Song studies the most,such as Chen Yinque and Fu Sinian,hardly ever actually wrote articles on the Song Dynasty.They just took the Song as a commanding height from which to research various important issues raised by the entirety of Chinese history and culture,such as the origin of "Song Learning," the historiography of the Song,and the New Song Learning,touching off long-running discussions among scholars in all fields.Therefore,we should make clear the differences and connections between Song history,Song Learning,the historiography of the Song Dynasty,and Song intellectuals and scholarship.It is also inappropriate to break up the study of Song history and Song intellectuals,scholarship and culture into separate academic disciplines.In particular we must avoid differentiating between classics and history,or between historical data and historical views.We should give lectures on Song Learning and research Han Learning.On the one hand,to research Song history,one must be conversant with Song Learning,just as to research a nation's history,one must be conversant with the essence of that nation's culture.On the other hand,historicizing abstruse ideas such as righteousness and rites is a reasonable and verifiable project.We should take the cultures of the Northern and Southern Song dynasties as our vantage point from which we set out to thoroughly understand the length and breadth of all history and culture,ancient and modern,domestic and foreign.We must study systematically and without bias,and not limit ourselves to the period of the Song Dynasty if we wish to achieve the heights of the New Song Learning and create a new climate for Chinese scholarship and culture.
