Abstract:Electron-rich aryl chlorides such as chloroanisole, chloroaniline, and chlorotoluene were dechlorinated by Grignard reagents in the presence of a catalytic amount of iron chlorides. This is in sharp contrast to the cross-coupling reactions of electron-poor aryl chlorides with Grignard reagents.

Abstract:Herein, we report the alkylation of alkenyl carbonates using alkyl Grignard reagents and iron catalysis to generate C(sp2)–C(sp3) bonds and provide synthetically useful yields over a range of substrates. The transformation allows the alkylation of a wide range of substrates, including aromatic rings, alkanes, cycloalkanes, heterocycles. This reaction has introduced a new family of electrophiles to the iron‐catalyzed cross‐coupling reactions.

Abstract:An iodine-promoted, metal-, base-, and solvent-free cross-coupling reaction was developed for the synthesis of various useful secondary amides via an aryl N-addition reaction of aryl groups to cyano groups. This aryl transfer reaction proceeds with arylhydrazine hydrochlorides serving as the aryl donors. A labelling experiment shows that the N atom in the product comes from the cyano group of the nitriles, which are low in cost. A plausible radical-driven mechanism is also proposed.

Abstract:An iron-catalyzed procedure was employed to achieve both the Sonogashira cross-coupling and intramolecular o-arylation of o-iodophenols and aryl acetylenes/1-substituted-2-trimethylsilyl acetylenes. A variety of 2-arylbenzo[b]furans were synthesized in moderate to good yields under the catalysis of 5% FeCl3 and 10% 1,10-phenanthroline.

Abstract:The development of an air-stable iron(III)-based precatalyst for the Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of alkyl halides and unactivated aryl boronic esters is reported. Despite benefits to cost and toxicity, the proclivity of iron(II)-based complexes to undergo deactivation via oxidation or hydrolysis is a limiting factor for their widespread use in cross-coupling reactions compared to palladium-based or nickel-based complexes. The new octahedral iron(III) complex demonstrates long-term stability on the benchtop as assessed by a combination of 1H NMR spectroscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and its sustained catalytic activity after exposure to air. Abstract:Comprehensive Summary The reductive cross‐coupling between C(aryl)–O and Si–Cl bonds is of much importance as a valuable strategy for the construction of C(aryl)–Si bonds but has remained a great challenge. Here we report a reductive cross‐coupling of diaryl ethers and chlorosilanes via strong electrophilic C(aryl)–O and Si–Cl bonds cleavage by iron catalysis, which constitutes an efficient protocol for the synthesis of a range of functionalized arylsilanes. The combination of low cost FeCl 2 as the precatalyst and i PrMgCl as the reductant shows high activity in the successive cleavage of unactivated C(aryl)–O bonds of diaryl ethers and strong electrophilic Si–Cl bonds of chlorosilanes, allowing their cross‐coupling in a reductive fashion. The low‐valent iron species generated in situ by reduction of FeCl 2 with i PrMgCl was proposed, which prefers to initially cleavage the C(aryl)–O bond of diaryl ethers with the chelation help of an o ‐amide auxiliary. Abstract:Defluorination of 1-fluoronaphthalene was catalyzed by CpTiCl3 and an alkyl Grignard reagent system. The reaction of 1-fluoronaphthalene, however, with 3 equiv of phenethylmagnesium chloride in the presence of a catalytic amount of transition metal catalysts afforded 1-(1-phenethyl)naphthalene in good yield via isomerization of the phenethyl group. Among the examined catalysts, CpTiCl3 and TaCl5 showed much higher activity than the others. The similar coupling reactions of phenethylmagnesium chloride with substituted fluoroarenes proceeded with high regioselectivity at the para-position to produce the corresponding 1-phenethylarenes in good yields.

Abstract:Iron(II) chloride catalyzed direct alkylation of sp(3) C-H bond adjacent to oxygen in propargyl ethers has been accomplished by the use of 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) as oxidant under mild reaction conditions. The reaction proceeded smoothly with a variety of 1,3-diketones leading to beta-dicarbonyl ether in moderate yields. In the absence of 1,3-diketones, ynenones were produced by the use of iron(III) chloride and DDQ.

Abstract:The synthesis of medicinally interesting aryldifluoromethylated compounds has drawn significant research attention in recent years. Herein, we report an unprecedented iron-mediated process for the selective defluorination of trifluoromethylarenes to achieve the 1,2-difluoroalkylthiolation of alkenes. Preliminary mechanistic studies revealed that thiolate anion, trifluoromethylarene, and iron cation could form an electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complex, which induced selective defluorination and then difunctionalization of alkenes to obtain aryldifluoromethylated products. The generated aryldifluoromethylated compounds make it difficult to form an EDA complex again, thus avoiding excessive defluorination. This conversion has concise and ambient reaction conditions and provides an alternative solution for obtaining difluorobenzylic intermediates.

Abstract:A simple iron-based catalyst with an N-heterocyclic carbene ligand can be used to excellent effect in the previously unknown Suzuki biaryl coupling of aryl chloride substrates with aryl boronic esters activated by an organolithium reagent. Mechanistic studies suggest the possible involvement of Fe(I) as the lowest oxidation state on the catalytic manifold and show that the challenging step is not activation of the aryl chloride substrate, but rather the transmetallation step. These findings are likely to pave the way for a renaissance of iron-catalysed carbon-carbon bond-forming transformations with ‘soft’ nucleophilic coupling partners.

Abstract:Ironing on hydroxyls Although iron-dependent enzymes efficiently hydroxylate aryl rings, this activity has proven hard to replicate with synthetic catalysts. Cheng et al . report that a disulfide ligand activates iron to catalyze carbon–hydrogen hydroxylation of a wide variety of arenes using hydrogen peroxide. The protocol can also cleanly functionalize phenols with an additional hydroxyl group, although unfunctionalized arenes react more rapidly, in contrast to conventional oxidative selectivity patterns. The authors showcase this complementary selectivity through hydroxylation of pharmaceuticals with complex substitution patterns. —JSY

Abstract:Iron-catalyzed direct reduction of allylic halides with benzylic alcohol was achieved, providing a new, simple, and efficient method for conducting highly regioselective hydrodehalogenation. This method not only features a readily available reductant, an inexpensive catalyst, simple manipulation, and good tolerance of functional groups including nitriles, nitro, esters, and methoxyl groups, it also has mild reaction conditions and shows complete regioselectivity in that only halides sited at the allylic position are reduced. Alternatively, this method can be applied in the selective transformation of benzylic alcohols to aromatic aldehydes without overoxidation to carboxylic acids.
