Abstract:By studying several structures of the ACS(Add-Compare-Select)Unit, this paper proposes a new method to design ACS Unit. The throughput could be improved by adopting Radix-4 net, and consumption resource could also be reduced due to simple logic structure.

Abstract:Trellis Code Modulation (TCM) has been widely used because it can obtain 2.55∼7.37 dB coding gain without bandwidth expansion or reduction of the effective information rates. Since Viterbi decoder plays an important role in the realization of HDTV system, we conduct the research and development on integration of Viterbi decoder. This paper proposes a new VLSI design of Viterbi decoder using ASIPs based on hardware/software co-design idea. It reduces the total design time and enhances the reliability of VLSI. We have successfully used this method for the design of Viterbi decoder in the ASTC-HDTV receiver chip.

Abstract:There are two traditional techniques for the realization of survivor memory unit in the Viterbi decoder-register exchange (RE) and trace back (TB) method. RE is not practical for the Viterbi decoder with a large number of trellis states due to the very complicated interconnections. TB needs a large quantity of buffers and has a long decoding delay. In this paper the register/three-state-gate trace back method is presented which combines the advantages of both RE and TB and overcomes their disadvantages. It's very suitable for VLSI implementation.

Abstract:In order to resolve the problems of large area,complicated routing and high power in decoding low-density parity-check codes(LDPC),this work presented a LDPC decoding approach,which is specified with parity check matrices based on circulant matrices,with structured memory and a corresponding partial parallel decoding architecture.By studying the structured parity matrix,the characteristic of the message passing between bit nodes and check nodes was indicated,and then a predetermined scheme of message storing with high flexibility and efficiency was proposed.Based on this scheme,a partial parallel decoding architecture was provided which significantly reduced the power and critical paths.Simulation of the LDPC in Chinese digital terrestrial television broadcasting standard on FPGA platform showed that the proposed decoding approach over AWGN channel achieved good performance,and suffered negligible performance loss compared with the double precision while effectively reducing the operation complexity.

Abstract:Modern digital communication systems usually employ convolutional codes with large constraint length for good decoding performance, which leads to large complexity and power consumption in Viterbi decoders. It is essential to use T-algorithm in Viterbi decoders to prune significant portions of the trellis states to dramatically reduce power consumption. However, the operation of searching for the best path metrics in the add-compare-select loop in T-algorithm significantly limits the clock speed. In this paper, we propose an efficient architecture based on pre-computation for Viterbi decoders incorporating T-algorithm. Through optimization at both algorithm level and architecture level, the new architecture greatly shortens the long critical path introduced by the conventional T-algorithm. The design example provided in this work demonstrates more than twice improvement in clock speed with negligible computation overhead while maintaining decoding performance.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel architecture of MPEG audio decoder, the input audio stream will not be serialized before decoding. Barrel shift register is used to fetch data from input buffer, which improves the efficiency of decoding process substantially. Dedicated hardware is designed to deal with input and degroup. In this scheme, the computation amount of bottleneck module can be reduced to one-fourths of the original one, and the memory storage requires half of the standard synthesis filter bank. This decoder can be used in DVB and DAB source decoding and etc.

Abstract:A high performance reusable Viterbi decoder is designed. Radix-4-pipeline, trace-forward, same-address-write-back and memory-manage techniques are used to improve its performance, area and power. Under PE architecture, the convolution code, the number of PE, the depth of trace-back, etc, can be all adjustable. Based on TSMC's 0.18 μm CMOS process, a punctured 64-state (4,1,6) Viterbi decoder is successfully simulated and synthesized, which has 30 000 gates, with a throughput of 12.5 Mbps and 15 mW power.With ST's 0.13 μm CMOS process, the same performance is achieved, with only 4.7 mW power. The Viterbi decoder has been used in our DAB receiver chip.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel lower-power multigigabit Viterbi decoder architecture is proposed for 60 GHz wireless personal-area network (WPAN) systems. Since add-compare-select (ACS) computation is the main bottleneck in decoding speed of Viterbi decoders, a balanced add-select-register-compare (BASIC) architecture is put forward to reduce critical path of ACS with low complexity. This work develops an 8-parallel BASIC Viterbi decoder for IEEE 802.1S.3c standard to accomplish high-throughput and low-power goals. Based on synthesized results in 0.13 mu m CMOS technology, the proposed decoder achieves up to 4 Gb/s throughput with energy efficiency 0.104 nJ/bit at 1.2 V.

Abstract:Viterbi algorithm is widely used in decoding.In this paper,a Viterbi decoder circuit for wireless local area network(WLAN) applications is presented.It works in the multi-rate 802.11a WLAN system with different code rates at the speed of 100MHz.For the high speed requirement of 802.11a standard,parallel architecture in ACS and SMU were used in our design,and also improved the architecture of SMU to reduce the decoding latency.A modified method of path metric normalization is applied which make the algorithm easier to implement.

Abstract:Based on layered decoding and semi-parallel structure, a novel architecture of multi-rate QC-LDPC decoder is proposed in this paper. It can support any code rates without any changes in hardware to achieve higher hardware utilization. The update of current layer and the comparison of next layer are processed simultaneously to improve the throughput. The check-to-variable messages are stored indirectly to reduce the storage space. Based on the proposed architecture, a QC-LDPC decoder of 2304 bits and 6-encodings style is presented. Then ModelSim SE6.0 simulation results verify that the proposed decoder is correct and effective. Finally, the decoder is synthesized by Synopsys Design Compiler on SMIC 0.18 µm CMOS technology, and the maximum throughput can achieve 318 Mbps at 145 MHz and 15 iterations.

Abstract:To resolve the incapability of decoding Reed-Solomon (RS) codes of conventional RS decoders in IEEE802.16d system, optimized design architecture for rate-variable shortened-and-punctured RS decoder was presented. A symmetric generator polynomial was applied, and the number of Galois-field (GF) multiplications was reduced in the encoder. In the decoder, the key function was solved by altering the initial condition of the modified Euclid algorithm (MEA), and a novel shortened-and-punctured RS decoder architecture was proposed based on conventional punctured RS decoder. The design architecture was implemented and verified in field programmable gate arrays (FGPA) chips, and the maximum decoding throughput of six types of RS codes in IEEE802.16d system was analyzed at a particular working clock respectively. The results show that the proposed decoder architecture can achieve a decoding throughput of at least 30 Mbps, and satisfy the requirement of IEEE802.16d system.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem of complex architecture and large resource consuming in RS decoder,a dynamically reconfigurable RS decoder is presented.In the decoder,the syndrome calculation and Chien's search algorithm can be realized in the reconfigurable syndrome and Chien's module(RSCM) by reconfiguring the circuit architecture dynamically at discrete time.A decode control module based on state machine is given and is in charge of controlling the function modules in RS decoder.The design is realized by VHDL language in Quartus II 7.2.As it is shown in the result,the encoder could reduce the consuming in hardware resource,and the maximum frequency of this chip could reach at 124MHz.

Abstract:An efficient multi-rate Low-Density Parity-Check Convolutional Code decoder will be present in this paper. We will introduce layered decoding algorithm into LDPC-CC decoding. Simulation results shows that our method can achieve better performance than the original brief propagation algorithm with less processors. Besides a new ASIC architecture which adopt proposed algorithm and can support all code rate (1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 4/5) of the LDPC-CC code in IEEE 1901 is proposed. Based on SMIC 130 nm CMOS process, our decoder attaints a maximum throughput of 333.3 Mb/s at 200 MHz. The core area is 3.55 mm2 with 10 processors. The average power consumption is 262 mW at code rate 4/5 and 200 MHz. The VLSI result shows that our decoder is both memory efficient and area efficient.

Abstract:A high-speed and area-efficient Viterbi Decoder is presented in the paper, and a new survivor path structure including RAM blocks and trace-back decode circuit is proposed. The survivor path memory is consist of 4 single-port RAM blocks, which reduces the chip's area comparing to the dual-port RAM structure; and a simple trace-back decoder circuit is implemented to get high speed. Only 2300 LEs are used in the Altera Stratix FPGA device to implement this design, and its speed is up to 163 MHz. The proposed Viterbi Decoder can be introduced to the digital communication systems that need high speed such as DTV or HDTV broadcast. © 2006 IEEE.

Abstract:Ultra-wideband(UWB) communication systems require Viterbi decoders with throughputs of up to 480 Mb/s,which cannot be accomplished in field-programmable gate array(FPGA) devices employing traditional parallel structures.A forward independent sliding-block structure was developed for Viterbi decoders to reduce the routing congestion and excessive consumption of logical resources in traditional structures,to achieve a higher maximum operating clock frequency.A simplified add-compare select unit(ACSU) using less iterations is used with a shorter critical path,which further increases the maximum operating clock frequency.A four-fold parallel Viterbi decoder has been implemented in a Xilinx Virtex-4 FPGA device with a maximum decoding rate of 720 Mb/s.

Abstract:In ultra-wideband (UWB) communications for power electronic systems, large power consumption and logic resource are occupied by multi-parallel sliding-block Viterbi decoders. A novel add-select-delay-compare architecture for Viterbi decoder is proposed to minimize these consumptions. In this architecture, a nested iteration of add-select and compare-select with balanced settling path is utilized to reduce propagation delay of critical path of add-compare-select and lower down parallel degrees of high throughput rate VD. The 500 Mbps UWB prototype receiver with the proposed add-select-delay-compare VD saves 40.4 % logic resource and 11.2 % power consumption compared with the original receiver.

Abstract:By analyzing the well-known Viterbi algorithm, a Viterbi decoder especially used in satellite communication system is presented. In this paper, the design technique of each part has been discussed. The decoder adopts 4 butterfly units in part- parallel calculation structure with concise interconnection, which is implemented with Xilinx Virtex-II 2V1000- 5BGS575 FPGA (field programmable gate array). The design delays 54 clock periods and costs 501 slices.
