Abstract:Catalytic transformation of glycerol to value-added products has attracted the attention of scientists all over the world. Among various transformations, selective oxidation of glycerol with molecular oxygen to dihydroxyacetone, glyceric acid, glyceraldehydes, and tartronic acid is challenging both from the viewpoint of academic research and industrial application. Herein, we review the recent progresses in the selective oxidation of glycerol under base-free conditions. Those catalysts widely reported for the selective oxidation of the terminal hydroxyl and secondary hydroxyl groups in glycerol, such as monometallic Au, Pt, and Pd NPs, and bimetallic Au-Pt, Au-Pd, Pt-Bi, Pt-Sb, and Pt-Cu, were compared and discussed in detail. The reaction mechanism over Pt-based catalysts, possible catalyst deactivation, and the corresponding improvements are presented. Further, the recent progresses in the continuous oxidation of glycerol in fixed bed reactors and its excellent selectivity in the formation of dihydroxyacetone are highlighted.

Abstract:Allyl alcohol is a crucial organic intermediate in synthesizing polymeric compounds industrially produced by petroleum-derived propylene despite environmental concerns. In this study, we propose a system that utilizes cost-effective and renewable bio-resource, glycerol, as the starting material. In this regard, we conducted the reaction in the presence of mono-oxygenated rhenium diphosphine complexes as catalysts and alcohol as the solvent and hydrogen transfer agent. Among the tested complexes, the [ReOBr3(Xantphos)] complex combined with 2-propanol as a solvent and the reducing agent exhibited the most outstanding performance, yielding allyl alcohol with an exceptional efficiency of 100%. The structures of three newly synthesized complexes, [ReOBr3(Xantphos)], [ReOBr3(DPEphos)], and [ReOCl3(dppb)] were determined by X-ray single crystallography. These findings contribute to the advancement of allyl alcohol production, offering a more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional petroleum-based methods.

Abstract:Glycerol, a by‐product of biodiesel production, has gained prominence as a precious platform chemical. To enhance the economic viability of the biodiesel production process and address the surplus of glycerol production, it is essential to transform it into value‐added products. In this context, homogeneous catalysis offers a promising avenue for glycerol valorisation. In this study, we introduce a family of iridium complexes bearing picolineamidate ligands with glucose‐functionalised substituents as novel homogeneous catalysts for glycerol to hydrogen and lactic acid conversion. These complexes exhibit high activity (conversion up to 53.3%) and 99% selectivity after 24 hours of reaction (TOFMAX=159 h‐1, TON24h=2498). Notably, the reaction occurs under ambient air and at milder temperature conditions (120°C) compared to other catalysts. These efforts in glycerol valorisation contribute to reducing biodiesel production costs, increasing the competitiveness of biofuels against petroleum‐based liquid fuels, giving rise to H2, through a global process with negative carbon dioxide emission, and lactic acid utilizable, among other, as a monomer for the synthesis of biodegradable plastics.

Abstract:Allyl alcohol is a pivotal intermediate and it is of great importance to find a new way for the selective production of allyl alcohol from renewable and surplus glycerol. In this work, we want to report the high performance of CoFe alloy for the direct synthesis of allyl alcohol from glycerol. This alloy catalyst was prepared via the controlled calcination and reduction of CoFe-ZIF precursor. Characterization results indicate that Co can improve the activation of hydrogen and Fe enhances the acidity of prepared CoFe alloy. The activated hydrogen and acid sites in CoFe alloy played a synergistic effect for the selective formation of allyl alcohol directly from glycerol. The selectivity of allyl alcohol remained higher than 68.7 % with a 89.7 % conversion of glycerol at 250 degrees C, 2 MPa and WHSV = 2.6h(-1). And the reaction mechanism over CoFe alloy was proposed on the basis of controlled experiments.

Abstract:Site-selective deoxygenation of hydroxyl groups represents essential processes to access valuable functionalized bio-based compounds with industrial potential. One of the challenging tasks in this context is to convert biodiesel-derived glycerol in the presence of abundant water directly to 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO), a key component of the emerging polymer industry. Herein, a monometallic iridium supported on H-ZSM-5 in the absence of Re oxophilic metal oxides was prepared via grinding-assisted impregnation procedures and attempted as an effective and recyclable catalyst for the aqueous-phase selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol toward 1,3-PDO in the absence of acid additives. The results revealed the necessity to control the Ir domain dispersions, Ir-0/Ir3+ ratio and the amounts of overall acid/Bronsted acid sites. Activity depended linearly on the amount of overall and Bronsted acid sites, and 1,3-PDO selectivity increased in the presence of Ir-induced Bronsted acid sites, denoted as Ir-O(H)-H-ZSM-5. We speculate that Ir-O(H)-H-ZSM-5 are generated by the interfacial synergistic interaction between IrO(x )and H-ZSM-5 through hydrogen spillover and reverse hydrogen spillover according to the reported literatures. The reaction mechanism to elucidate the role of Ir-O(H)-H-ZSM-5 sites in glycerol hydrogenolysis was also postulated based on extensive characterization and catalytic reaction results. Abstract:The selective dehydration of glycerol to hydroxyacetone (acetol) was studied in a continuous flow fixed-bed reactor with CuO supported on monoclinic (m-) or tetragonal (t-) ZrO2 nanoparticles. Catalysts were characterised by ICP, N2 physisorption, powder XRD, HR-TEM and SEM-EDS, N2O titration, and NH3- and CO2-TPD. In-situ XPS reveals the impact of zirconia phase on copper speciation, with m-ZrO2 preferentially stabilising Cu(I) species, whose presence correlates with enhanced catalytic performance. In-situ FTIR of 1,2-propanediol and glycerol evidenced Cu(I) promote desorption of a C=O containing intermediate. Solvent selection strongly influenced catalyst reactivity, with methanol less prone to competitive adsorption than water, and favouring the genesis of Cu(I) species. Cu/m-ZrO2 achieved 60 % yield of the desired acetol at 240 °C, maintaining ≈50 % yield over three consecutive regeneration cycles, being one of the most efficient catalysts based on Earth abundant metals for continuous glycerol dehydration to acetol under the present conditions.

Abstract:Selectively catalyzed dehydration of ethanol, 1,2-propylene glycol, and glycerol on supported heteropoly acid (HPA) was studied using transient diffuse reflectance infrared fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). Tungstosilicic acid (H 4 [SiW 12 O 40 ] denoted as H 4 SiW), supported on neutral mesoporous alumina as a catalyst, was studied to investigate the formation of intermediate products and desired dehydration products on the catalyst surface. Both ethylene-containing species and surface-bound carboxyl species were detected for all three alcohols. The formation of ethylene was promoted at lower temperatures while an increased reaction temperature facilitated the formation of acetate products when ethanol was used. When 1,2-propylene glycol was used, surface-bound carboxyl species were found as major intermediate products; these might have formed from propanal produced from the hydration reaction catalyzed by acid sites on HPA. Intermediate species from more complicated reactions were detected on the catalyst surface when glycerol was used, including aldehyde, surface-bound carboxyl species, and alkene species. The results indicated that acid dehydration might be facilitated either by the addition of water or lowering the reaction temperature. The work provides insight into reaction pathways for bio-polyols, and therefore is informative for designing cost-effective and efficient chemical catalysis systems for the conversion of bio-renewables.

Abstract:The utilization of sustainable resources such as biomass to produce fuels and chemicals has recently attracted significant attention due to the depletion of fossil reserves, increasing energy demand, and growing environmental concerns. Long-chain fatty acids, which are major constituents of plant oil, are important feedstock for biorefinery. Besides producing well-known biodiesels, the hydrogenation of fatty acids to fatty alcohols has recently drawn significant attention due to the versatility and growing market value of fatty alcohols. An example of heterogenous iron-catalyzed selective hydrogenation of stearic acid to stearyl alcohol is reported. Comparing with other reported non-noble metal centers, such as Co and Ni, Fe is 3000 similar to 30000 times more abundant and 20 similar to 150 times cheaper, thus making our method more economic and attractive. The iron catalyst was prepared by simultaneous pyrolysis of iron precursor [Fe(acac)(3)] and nitrogen-doped carbon precursor (melamine) onto alumina, bearing Fe3C active phase and nitrogen-doped carbon-alumina hybrid support. The optimization of preparation parameter showed that the optimal pyrolysis temperature is 900 degrees C, while the best mass fraction of iron is 20%. The replacement of Fe(acac) 3 with Fe(NO3)(3) led to inferior catalytic performance, which was due to undesired redox reaction between NO3- and melamine during pyrolysis that hampered the reaction between Fe and melamine to form Fe3C active phase. Instead, hercynite phase became the predominant phase. The exploration of reaction parameter showed that the optimal reaction temperature is 320 degrees C and the best H2 pressure is 4 MPa. The time course for stearic acid conversion shows that stearic acid was rapidly converted into stearyl alcohol with yield of 88.6% within 0.5 h, and then gradually converted into octadecane with yield of 90% at 4 h. The unsatisfactory stability of the iron catalyst is probably due to the decomposition of Fe3C active phase to metallic Fe phase during recycling tests.

Abstract:An iron-catalyzed direct aerobic α,β-dehydrogenation of carbonyls has been reported. The combination of tert-butyl nitrite and N-hydroxyphthalimide worked as the organo cocatalyst system; thus, no extra transition metal reagents are required. Abstract:Allylic alcohols are the essential building blocks widely used in diverse streams of organic inventions for pharmaceuticals, fragrances, agrochemicals and polymers. Currently, allylic alcohols are industrially produced from petroleum-based feedstocks via atom uneconomic processes. More sustainable synthesis route for allylic alcohols is limited. Herein, a methodology for the direct and highly selective production of allylic alcohols has been accomplished by controlled dehydrogenative a-methylenation of alcohols with methanol. This transformation is enabled by interfacial Lewis acid-basic pair on tailor-made ZnO/4Mg1ZrO(x) mixed oxide. High selectivity (83 similar to 92%) of allylic alcohols is the consequence of alcohols acceptorless dehydrogenation to liberation of H-2 and Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley type hydrogen transfer onto C=O bonds of unsaturated aldehydes. Furthermore, the prepared ZnO/4Mg1ZrO(x) mixed oxide shows good stability after 200 h time on stream test. These observations could additionally allow us to design multifunctional solid acid-basic catalysts for the transformations of renewable oxygenates into value-added chemicals.

Abstract:alpha-Hydroxy acids have attracted broad attention because of their prevalence in bioactive molecules and biodegradable polymers, but their conventional syntheses are usually restricted to aromatic substrates, especially, in a stepwise manner. Herein, we disclose the transformation of alkyl and aryl vicinal glycols to alpha-hydroxy acetates in water under the air atmosphere with our solid self-supported NHC-Ir single-site catalyst. Both aliphatic and aromatic glycols are compatible with a much higher catalytic efficiency in the presence of this solid single-site catalyst than other viable molecular catalysts (93% vs <35%) because of the "isolation effect". Remarkably, our catalyst could be reused for 20 runs without an obvious loss in catalytic activity and selectivity. Control experiments and density functional theory calculations reveal that the reaction firstly undergoes a dehydrogenation facilitated by the catalyst, and then it proceeds through an unexpected oxidization relay step by oxygen in the air, leading to the alpha-hydroxy acetate formation. Our protocol can potentially contribute to the valorization of readily available and inexpensive diols.

Abstract:1, 3-propanediol (1, 3-PDO) is an important intermediate for the synthesis of polytrimethylene terephthalate (PIT), and it is currently produced via the fermentation of glycerol. In this work, a series of Co-x/Al2O3 catalysts were prepared via the controlled calcination and reduction of Co-Al hydrotalcite, which were introduced to catalyze the hydrogenation of glycidol to produce 1, 3-PDO. The best performance was obtained over Co-x/Al2O3 catalyst after 5 h of reaction at 80 degrees C and 2 MPa H-2. The conversion of glycidol was 99.8%, and the yield of 1, 3-PDO was 68.0%. This result is not only higher than that of the Ni-2/Al2O3 and Cu-2/Al2O3 catalysts prepared by the same method, but also higher than that of the Al2O3 supported Pt, Pd, Ru catalysts. Characterization results indicated that the interaction between active site Co and the acid site of the Al2O3 support is of great importance to the activity of the catalyst and the selectivity towards 1, 3-PDO.
