Abstract:A series of supported Ru based catalysts (support = AC, Al2O3, SiO2, HZSM-5) were prepared with different methods and applied in the hydrogenation of 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanedione (CBDK) to 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol (CBDO). Detailed catalyst characterizations of XRD, TEM, BET, ICP, XPS and NH3-TPD methods were applied to investigate the support effect and influence of preparation methods. Complete conversion of the substrate was achieved with the selectivity of CBDO up to 99.1% over Ru/AC catalysts. The superiority of Ru/AC catalyst prepared with chemical precipitation method over other counterparts were attributed to the larger specific surface area, smaller metal particle size and better Ru dispersion, which was more favorable for the hydrogenation of CBDK.

Abstract:In this work, a "hydrogen-free" strategy based on the ruthenium (Ru) modified REUSY molecular sieve catalysts was proposed, which can promote CO 2 catalytic transfer hydrogenation using endogenous hydrogen induced by glycerol dehydrogenation. As the active component, Ru can not only act on the dehydrogenation reaction with glycerol, but also promote the hydrogenation reaction of CO 2 . Comparison experiments confirmed that under conditions of 200 °C, 36 h, and 7.92 g KHCO 3 , the reaction could obtain the highest yields over 10 wt.% Ru-deAl(5 h)-REUSY. The yields of formic acid and lactic acid were 19.81 % and 6.13 % respectively. In addition, when replacing the carbon source from KHCO 3 to CO 2 (dry ice), formic acid and lactic acid yields over 10 wt.% Ru-deAl(5 h)-REUSY catalysts were further improved, reaching 64.14 % and 17.13 %, respectively. This work demonstrated the feasibility of the "hydrogen-free" upgrade process realizing the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of CO 2 into formic acid with glycerol as hydrogen donor.

Abstract:The introduction of ruthenium can greatly improve the activity of cobalt catalysts for aqueous hydrogenation of levulinic acid.The carbon layer structure can reduce the loss of metallic cobalt and further inhibit the oxidation of cobalt on the surface.The /SiO2 catalyst achieves high stability in aqueous hydrogenation of levulinic acid.The hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) to γ-valerolactone (GVL) by using water as solvent is a crucial process in the production of fine chemicals from biomass. An ultrathin carbon layer coating CoRu bimetallic catalyst supported on silica (/SiO2) is prepared by using tannis-ligated cobalt-ruthenium complex on silica as precursors, and applied for catalyzed synthesis of GVL from LA. Because of the synergistic effect between cobalt and ruthenium, the addition of small amounts of Ru to Co catalysts can increase the catalytic activity in the aqueous hydrogenation of LA. The ultrathin carbon layer covered on the CoRu bimetallic catalyst can greatly reduce the leaching of active metals. The /SiO2 catalyst achieves high stability and is reused up to 5 runs without significant loss of performance in aqueous hydrogenation of levulinic acid.

Abstract:Formaldehyde is an essential building block for hundreds of chemicals and a promising liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC), yet its indirect energy-intensive synthesis process prohibits it from playing a more significant role. Here we report a direct CO reduction to formaldehyde (CORTF) process that utilizes hydrogen underpotential deposition to overcome the thermodynamic barrier and the scaling relationship restriction. This is the first time that this reaction has been realized under ambient conditions. Using molybdenum phosphide as a catalyst, formaldehyde was produced with nearly a 100% faradaic efficiency in aqueous KOH solution, with its formation rate being one order of magnitude higher compared with the state-of-the-art thermal catalysis approach. Simultaneous tuning of the current density and reaction temperature led to a more selective and productive formaldehyde synthesis, indicating the electro-chemical and thermal duality of this reaction. DFT calculations revealed that the desorption of the *H2CO intermediate likely served as the rate-limiting step, and the participation of H2O made the reaction thermodynamically favorable. Furthermore, a full-cell reaction set-up was demonstrated with CO hydrogenation to HCHO achieved without any energy input, which fully realized the spontaneous potential of the reaction. Our study shows the feasibility of combining thermal and electrochemical approaches for realizing the thermodynamics and for scaling relationship-confined reactions, which could serve as a new strategy in future reaction design.

Abstract:The CO 2 transfer hydrogenation with bio-glycerol over a Ni-zeolite was systematically studied to produce formic and lactic acids. The alkaline hydrothermal reactions without a catalyst and with Ni-zeolite heterogeneous catalyst were explored, focusing on the effects of base types and concentrations, reaction atmosphere and temperature. In alkaline hydrothermal reactions without catalyst, NaOH demonstrated superior performance at 1 M. A Ni/NaZSM-5 catalyst showed astounding performance giving 9.3 mol-L -1 -g -1 lactic acid and 6.5 mol-L -1 -g -1 formic acid at 250°C after 2 h. Notably, the zeolite showed resistance to the highly basic conditions of the reaction medium. For the first time, CO 2 conversion in aqueous phase was reported addressing the complexity of CO 2 solubility. A reaction network was proposed including the diverse glycerol transformations not yet studied for this system. Overall, this study sheds light on the understanding of this complex reaction system and the potential of Ni-supported zeolites for sustainable CO 2 utilisation.

Regioselective Hydroxymethylation of Alkenes to Linear Alcohols with CO 2 /H 2 Using a Rh/Ru Dual Catalyst

Abstract:CO2 is an attractive renewable C1 resource, and H2 is a cheap and green reductant. The combination of CO2 and H2 for hydroxymethylation of alkenes provides a novel synthetic tool to directly generate alcohols, especially linear ones, which are generally preferred as precursors of detergents and plasticizers. However, the most problematic issue of this promising transformation is the non-regioselection due to the inability of regioselectivity control over the ligand, resulting from the high temperature required for the reverse water–gas shift step. Here, we develop an innovative strategy to selectively produce linear alcohols from alkenes and CO2/H2 through the regiocontrollable ability of the ligand. The reaction is efficiently mediated by a bimetallic Rh–Ru catalyst using PTA (1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane) as the ligand, and the desired alcohols can be obtained in up to 92% yield with 87/13 regioselectivity, which surpasses that ever reported. The mechanistic study reveals that the transformation proceeds through domino sequences, that is, CO2 hydrogenation to HCOOH, fast release of CO, hydroformylation, and aldehyde reduction. The synergy of Rh and Ru contributes to the excellent fulfillment of the domino sequences, while the ligand PTA regulates the regioselectivity elegantly. Notably, the preferred hydrogenation of CO2 and aldehydes by Ru/PTA inhibits the occurrence of alkene isomerization and hydrogenation, which is not available in other ligands. The strategy opens a new way for selective production of linear alcohols together with CO2 transformation through the regiocontrollable ability of the ligand, which will shed light on industrial carbonylation with CO2.

Abstract:Abstract The hydrogenolysis of glycerol was performed over a Pt/C catalyst in combination with several alkali metal hydroxides and their salts. LiOH was found to be an effective promoter for the selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-propanediol. Hydroxyl ions are the main factor to promote the reaction process by dehydration of the glyceraldehyde intermediate. Lithium ions play a role in assisting the dehydrogenation of glycerol to glyceraldehyde, because they have the right size to coordinate with the alkoxide species. A possible surface reaction mechanism involving the participation of lithium ions was proposed to account for the results obtained in the study.

Abstract:We developed a bidentate Ru(II)‐NC‐catalyzed transfer hydrogen reaction of ketones using ethanol (EtOH) as the hydrogen source under a weak base condition. The control experiments suggested that the reaction proceeds via the Ru‐H mechanism and yields ethyl acetate as the only byproduct. The deuterium‐labeling experiments further showed that hydrogen evolved from the CH2 and OH groups. The results provide a new weak base system for the transfer hydrogen reaction of ketones using ethanol as the hydrogen donor.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Syngas to dimethyl oxalate (DMO) followed by hydrogenation to methyl glycolate (MG) is considered to be an environmentally friendly and economical route. However, the catalyst with super performance and low cost for this route is still challenging. In this work, a simple and low‐lost fabrication method was developed to prepare a Ru/activated carbon (AC) catalyst and was used for DMO hydrogenation to MG under mild reaction conditions. RESULTS The Ru/AC catalyst showed the best performance in the low‐temperature hydrogenation of DMO to MG compared to Ru/SiO2 and Ru/Al2O3. A series of characterization results showed that the super catalytic properties of Ru/AC catalyst might be attributed to the higher dispersion of Ru on support and its smallest nanoparticles size, weak surface acidity and electron‐deficient state of Ru species. The key parameters such as Ru loading, temperature, weight hourly space velocity and pressure, were comprehensively investigated. MG selectivity of 94.6% with DMO conversion of 97.2% were obtained over the 4.0 Ru/AC catalyst at 90oC. The 4.0Ru/AC catalyst showed excellent stability and there was no obvious deactivation after1032 h test. CONCLUSIONS The Ru/AC catalyst is effective for the DMO hydrogenation to MG under mild conditions, and has great promise for industrial applications because of its low cost, simple preparation, high efficiency and long life. Abstract:The hydrogenation of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) to produce chemicals and transportation liquid fuels in huge demand via heterogeneous thermochemical catalysis achieved using renewable energy has received increasing attention, and substantial advances have been made in this research field in recent years. In this study, we summarize our progress in the rational design and construction of highly efficient catalysts for CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol, lower olefins, aromatics, and gasoline- and jet fuel-range hydrocarbons. The structure-performance relationship, nature of the active sites, and mechanism of the reactions occurring over these catalysts are explored by combining computational and experimental evidence. The results of this study will promote further fundamental studies and industrial applications of heterogeneous catalysts for CO 2 hydrogenation to produce bulk chemicals and liquid fuels. Abstract:Reduction of O/C ratio of lignin derived monomers via hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) pathway is conventionally furnished using molecular hydrogen under severe conditions. Nonetheless, due to a prerequisite to accomplish HDO through commercially attractive methodology we report, HDO reactions of various phenolic compounds via catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) pathway using very low loading of Ru (0.5 wt%) on neutral and acidic Al2O3 under nitrogen atmosphere. With guaiacol as a substrate, 74% cyclohexanol yield at 225 °C in the presence of IPA is realized. Bi-functionality of metal state, acidity of support and nature of alcohol are perceived to be responsible for the variation in activity.

Abstract:The development and comprehension of supported metal catalysts for CO 2 hydrogenation is of paramount importance in mitigating the net CO 2 emissions. Supported Ru catalysts have been widely recognized in facilitating CO 2 methanation, on which recent findings suggest that the CO 2 hydrogenation process can be manipulated to favor the reverse water–gas shift (RWGS) pathway by precisely adjusting the size of Ru particles. However, the size-dependent impact of Ru remains a topic of lively debate. In this work, Ru/MgO catalysts with Ru in the form of single atoms (Ru 1 ) and few-atom cluster (Ru FAC ) structures were prepared for CO 2 hydrogenation. The 1.0Ru/MgO catalyst (with 1 wt.% of Ru), featuring a mixture of Ru 1 and Ru FAC with a size of 0.6–1.0 nm, showed the highest CO yield (38% at 500 °C) with balanced CO 2 conversion and CO selectivity. Transient CO 2 hydrogenation and temperature-programmed surface reaction (TPSR) studies suggested that the adsorbed CO 2 species participated in CO 2 hydrogenation. On Ru 1 sites, CO 2 hydrogenation followed the RWGS pathway, resulting in the production of CO. In contrast, on Ru FAC sites, the enhanced H 2 dissociation ability, along with the presence of adsorbed bidentate and monodentate carbonate species at the Ru−MgO interfaces, facilitated the formation of CH 4 through the CO 2 methanation pathway. This study highlights the critical roles of Ru structure and local environment in defining the CO 2 hydrogenation pathways and provides new design principles for highly active Ru-based catalysts.

Abstract:Liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) systems are an excellent alternative to pressurized gas and liquid hydrogen storage technologies due to their high volumetric storage capacities and straightforward adaptation to existing infrastructure. Homogeneous catalysts are promising for the selective and reversible release of hydrogen from LOHC. However, separation from product mixtures and recycling inhibit their use, particularly when comprised of costly low-abundance elements, motivating the development of heterogeneous versions that are more easily recovered and reused. Here, we describe two methods for the heterogenization of molecular Ru catalysts that efficiently dehydrogenate the polyalcohol LOHCs ethylene glycol (EG) and 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO). The heterogeneous versions of these catalysts maintain catalytic activity for hydrogen production comparable to the homogeneous complexes, with up to 81% conversion and 99% selectivity. DFT modeling indicates mechanistic similarities for the dehydrogenations of EG and 1,2-PDO, with the rate-limiting steps associated with protonation of the Ru–H bond to form H2 and the alkoxide species coordinated to Ru(II), followed by β-hydride elimination to regenerate the Ru–H bond. Overall, the data suggest these heterogenized molecular catalysts have potential for practical use in polyalcohol-based LOHC systems.

Hydrogenation of CO2 to Formate with a Highly Active Solid Ruthenium Phosphine

Abstract:There is widespread interest in the hydrogenation of CO2 to produce high-energy substances such as formic acid. Herein, ruthenium trichloride was immobilized on porous phosphine polymers (Ru/KAPs-Ph-PPh3) and gave excellent catalytic activity in the hydrogenation of CO2 to produce formate. With the assistance of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU), a high turnover number (TON) of up to 1470000 was obtained in 12 hours at 120 & DEG;C and a total pressure of 6 MPa (P(H-2)/P(CO2)=1 : 1), with average TOFs of 122500 h(-1). Moreover, the catalyst can be easily recovered by filtration with acceptable catalytic effectiveness.
Mechanistic Investigations on the Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation of Lignin-Derived Monomers over Ru Catalysts: Theoretical and Kinetic Studies

Abstract:The hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) reaction of oxygenated compounds such as lignin-derived phenolics is well studied using molecular H2 as a hydrogen source, yet the use of high pressures discourages its use on an industrial scale. As an alternative, the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) pathway provides in situ hydrogenation species, which reduces the need for the high-pressure infrastructure required when molecular hydrogen is used. Nevertheless, this strategy is scantly studied, and in lieu with this, herein we report the kinetic and mechanistic investigations of the CTH strategy for the HDO of guaiacol, phenol, anisole veratrole, and eugenol to their respective products. For potential commercialization purposes, low loading of metal, milder reaction conditions, and high selectivity toward desired products with a high H/C ratio were considered while designing catalysts (0.5 wt % Ru on SiO2–Al2O3, SiO2, Al2O3-acidic, Al2O3-basic, and Al2O3-neutral) for these reactions. As high as 74% cyclohexanol yield from guaiacol was achieved at 225 °C in the presence of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) as the hydrogen source and over the Ru/Al2O3-acidic catalyst reduced at 150 °C. A detailed kinetic study is carried out to understand the interaction of the substrate and intermediates with the catalyst and the influence of reaction parameters on the product formation. It was observed that the cis-isomer of 2-methoxycyclohexanol rapidly undergoes further conversion than the trans-isomer. The experimental observations are substantiated through density functional theory (DFT) studies on Ru(0001) and guaiacol molecule complexes. Hydrogenation of CO2 to Formate Catalyzed by Ru Catalyst Supported on Copolymerized Porous Organic Polymer

Abstract:The catalytic hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to formate is of great interest due to its significant role in the CO2 utilization. In this study, a novel heterogeneous Ru(III) catalyst was prepared by immobilizing RuCl3 on a porous organic polymer (POP) obtained from 1,4-phthalaldehyde (PTA) and 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxaldehyde (BPDA) with melamine. A copolymerization strategy utilizing monomers of varying lengths was employed to prepare the POP-supported Ru catalyst with adjustable porosity. The optimization of the framework porosity resulted in enhanced CO2 affinity, accelerated mass transfer, and a remarkable enhancement in catalytic activity. A high turnover number (TON) of 2458 was achieved for the CO2 hydrogenation to formate in 2 h with catalyst Cat-3 under 3 MPa (CO2/H2 = 1:1) at 120°C in 1 M Et3N aqueous solution. Moreover, the Cat-3 demonstrated good recyclability and was able to be reused for five consecutive runs, resulting in a high total TON of 9971.

Abstract:Biomass glycerol is an important raw material for many available chemicals, such as 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO). Hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-PDO is considered as a sustainable process with renewable potential application. In this paper, a series of bimetallic PdCu-KF/γ-Al2O3 were prepared and the structures of catalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, TEM and CO2-TPD. By measuring the activity of the catalyst, we found that PdCu-KF/γ-Al2O3 (Pd:Cu:KF=0.05:1:0.5) can be used as an efficient catalyst for hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-PDO, with 98.3% selectivity and nearly 100% conversion (200°C, 2.5MPa initial H2 pressure, 20h).

Abstract:Two kinds of immobilized Ru catalysts were synthesized by anchoring different ruthenium complexes on the functionalized mesoporous MCM-41 and then characterized with elemental analysis, atomic absorption spectrophotometer, UV-Vis and FT-IR. Hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to formate was investigated over these catalysts in CO2-expanded solvent. High formate yield was obtained but no by-product was detected. The effects of solvents and bases on the catalyst activity were also examined. These two catalysts are different in their activities and stabilities, especially at lower temperature and hydrogen partial pressure. They are promising in industry because of the easiness of catalyst separation and reuse.
