Abstract:We developed a low field NMR system, which consisting of three parts based on High Tc DC-SQUID. First, the parameters and the relative location of the coils were designed on the basis of thoretical calculation. We made the prepolarization field reached 10mT and the measurement field changed between 200 μT and 1 μT. Second, based on the LabVIEW platform, we designed a programm, by which automatic measurement and data acquisition were achieved perfectly. At last, we fulfilled the test of the SQUID and the system electronics, and all the parts worked well during the process of the comprehensive test. Further experiment and analysis on the system were in process.

Abstract:Accurate measurement of magnetic susceptibility plays a pivotal role in diverse scientific disciplines, ranging from material characterization to geophysical exploration. Superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) have long been regarded as the gold standard for magnetic susceptibility measurements. However, their reliance on cryogenic temperatures and complex setups imposes significant limitations. In this study, we used a single-axis spin-exchange relaxation-free (SERF) atomic magnetometer to measure magnetic susceptibility. We propose a new measurement method that resolves the inherent contradiction between the strong magnetic field and the zero-magnetic-field environment required by the SERF state in susceptibility measurements. The article provides a detailed exposition of the instrument’s principles, design, fabrication, and testing results. The achieved measured magnetic moment sensitivity is ${2} \times {10}^{-{6}}$ emu, while the coil system can realize a maximum theoretical sensitivity of ${1} \times {10}^{-{7}}$ emu. In addition, we conducted tests on actual samples and compared the results with those obtained using SQUIDs. This work demonstrates the potential of SERF atomic magnetometers in achieving low-cost, high-sensitivity measurements of magnetic susceptibility.

Abstract:We present the design and construction of a SQUID-based magnetometer for operation down to temperatures T = 10 mK, while retaining the compatibility with the sample holders typically used in commercial SQUID magnetometers. The system is based on a dc-SQUID coupled to a second-order gradiometer. The sample is placed inside the plastic mixing chamber of a dilution refrigerator and is thermalized directly by the 3He flow. The movement though the pickup coils is obtained by lifting the whole dilution refrigerator insert. A home-developed software provides full automation and an easy user interface.

Abstract:Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID) microscopy has excellent magnetic field sensitivity, but suffers from modest spatial resolution when compared with other scanning probes. This spatial resolution is determined by both the size of the field sensitive area and the spacing between this area and the sample surface. In this paper we describe scanning SQUID susceptometers that achieve sub-micron spatial resolution while retaining a white noise floor flux sensitivity of ≈2μΦ<sub>0</sub>/Hz<sup>1/2</sup>. This high spatial resolution is accomplished by deep sub-micron feature sizes, well shielded pickup loops fabricated using a planarized process, and a deep etch step that minimizes the spacing between the sample surface and the SQUID pickup loop. We describe the design, modeling, fabrication, and testing of these sensors. Although sub-micron spatial resolution has been achieved previously in scanning SQUID sensors, our sensors not only achieve high spatial resolution but also have integrated modulation coils for flux feedback, integrated field coils for susceptibility measurements, and batch processing. They are therefore a generally applicable tool for imaging sample magnetization, currents, and susceptibilities with higher spatial resolution than previous susceptometers.

Abstract:We have developed a simple sintering system to prepare the yttria-stabilized-zirconia (YSZ) bicrystals. Grain-boundary junctions made from the epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7-delta films on the bicrystal substrates demonstrated Josephson behavior. Using new square-washer design, single-level magnetometer of dc superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) has been fabricated. Owing to the flux focusing effect of the large washer, the magnetic field sensitivity of the devices has been enhanced. The magnetic field resolution of the magnetometer is 1pT/Hz(1/2) at 10 Hz, and increases to 3pT/Hz(1/2) at 1 Hz at 77 K.

Abstract:We report on the research work at Peking University on optimizing high-temperature superconductor (HTS) rf superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) systems and applying them in geophysical survey and magnetocardiography (MCG). Emphasis is placed on the design of comb-shape resonators for HTS rf SQUID systems and the experimental results of two applications: transient electromagnetics and MCG. The magnetic-field sensitivity of HTS magnetometers is now adequate for MCG applications. However, in order to be commercially used, the system still needs some improvements: development of suitable gradiometers and multi-channel systems.

Abstract:As a scientific experiment platform, a novel high temperature magnetization measurement system in pulsed magnetic field has been developed. In this paper, the thermal insulation design, measurement system and magnet are presented. A thermal analysis and a heating test have been carried out in the temperature range of 300 K-1060 K. Using the thermal insulation, the temperature of the pick-up coils can be maintained below 450 K when the sample is heated to 1060 K and the magnet is immersed in 77 K liquid nitrogen. Finally, a magnetization measurement of La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 in a 15 T pulsed magnetic field at the temperature of 300 K, 350 K and 520 K has been carried out. It is evident that the magnetization of the sample significantly decreases with a rise of temperature.

Abstract:We have developed a microscope to image weak magnetic fields using submillimeter pickup coils made from conventional low-temperature superconducting niobium wire coupled to the input circuit of a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). The pickup coil and the SQUID sensor are mounted in the vacuum space of the cryostat and are thermally anchored to the liquid helium reservoir. A 25 μm thick sapphire window separates the room temperature (RT) sample and the vacuum space. The spacing between the pickup coil and RT sample was typically less than 130 μm. The spatial resolution is limited by the diameter of the pickup coil. The pickup coils are easily interchangeable, allowing us to adapt the SQUID microscope to a variety of different measurements. We have achieved a spatial resolution of 250 μm with a magnetic field sensitivity of 850 fT/Hz1/2 or a spatial resolution of 500 μm with a magnetic field sensitivity of 330 fT/Hz1/2. We have used this instrument to measure various biomagnetic and paleomagnetic fields.

Abstract:We designed and fabricated a new type of superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) susceptometers for magnetic imaging of quantum materials. The 2-junction SQUID sensors employ 3D Nb nano-bridges fabricated using electron-beam lithography. The two counter-wound balanced pickup loops of the SQUID enable gradiometric measurement and they are surrounded by a one-turn field coil for susceptibility measurements. The smallest pickup loop of the SQUIDs were 1 μm in diameter and the flux noise was around 1 μФ0/√Hz at 100 Hz. We demonstrate scanning magnetometry, susceptometry and current magnetometry on some test samples using these nano-SQUIDs.

Abstract:The step-edge type high temperature superconductor (HTS) radio frequency (rf) superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) were fabricated from YBa2Cu3O7-delta thin films with a field sensitivity of 66 fT/Hz(1/2). Even though the sensitivity of the rf SQUID sensor used in the experiments was degraded to 77 fT/Hz(1/2) in the magnetic shielded room (MSR), the performance of the rf SQUID sensor was good enough for the ultra-low field (ULF) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments at a measurement field of 61.5 mu T. With the help of a strictly controlled fast switching circuit and a coupled LC circuit which acted as flux transformer, the signal-tonoise ratio (SNR) of the rf SQUID-based ULF NMR system with different operating points was measured. The optimum SNR was 40 dB which increased significantly by coupling an input coil closely beneath the rf SQUID sensor. The extracted 1/T-1 value for pure water sample at 23 degrees C showed the rf SQUID based ULF NMR was an effective system for ULF NMR researches. All above, the direct coupled method and the control circuit show a great potential in the future rf SQUID-based ULF NMR &MRI system.

Abstract:The measurement of remanent magnetic moments in rocks is essential for the study of paleomagnetism and rock magnetism. However, it is challenging to achieve high sensitivity nondestructive detection of residual magnetic moments in large samples. Using superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs)-based measurement systems for large-sample measurements necessitates sample sampling, potentially causing sample damage, and is associated with the high cost of the equipment. Using coils, magnetic flux gates, and similar methods for measurement also struggles to provide highly sensitive magnetic moment information. To address the challenge of low-cost, high-sensitivity, and wide-range magnetic moment measurements, this article presents a prototype residual magnetic moment measurement system (MMMS) based on a compact single-axis spin-exchange relaxation-free (SERF) atomic magnetometer (AM). The article begins by elucidating the fundamental principles of using an AM for magnetic moment measurements. It then provides a detailed account of the instrument's design, fabrication, and the results of various performance tests. In the end, a measurement system with a range of is achieved. In terms of theoretical sensitivity, it is comparable to SQUID measurement systems. We also propose a rapid method for measuring the magnetic moments of large samples and demonstrate its application on actual basalt samples. This work underscores the potential of a compact single-axis SERF AM for cost-effective and highly sensitive detection of the remanent magnetic moments of rocks.

Abstract:Scanning superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) microscopy is a magnetic imaging technique combining high-field sensitivity with nanometer-scale spatial resolution. State-of-the-art SQUID-on-tip probes are now playing an important role in mapping correlation phenomena, such as superconductivity and magnetism, which have recently been observed in two-dimensional van der Waals materials. Here, we demonstrate a scanning probe that combines the magnetic and thermal imaging provided by an on-tip SQUID with the tip-sample distance control and topographic contrast of a non-contact atomic force microscope (AFM). We pattern the nanometer-scale SQUID, including its weak-link Josephson junctions, via focused ion beam milling at the apex of a cantilever coated with Nb, yielding a sensor with an effective diameter of 365 nm, field sensitivity of 9.5 $\text{nT}/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ and thermal sensitivity of 620 $\text{nK}/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$, operating in magnetic fields up to 1.0 T. The resulting SQUID-on-lever is a robust AFM-like scanning probe that expands the reach of sensitive nanometer-scale magnetic and thermal imaging beyond what is currently possible.

Abstract:We have developed a low temperature, high-resolution microwave surface impedance probe that is able to operate in high static magnetic fields. Surface impedance is measured by cavity perturbation of dielectric resonators, with sufficient sensitivity to resolve the microwave absorption of sub-mm-sized superconducting samples. The resonators are constructed from high permittivity single-crystal rutile (TiO2) and have quality factors in excess of 10^6. Resonators with such high performance have traditionally required the use of superconducting materials, making them incompatible with large magnetic fields and subject to problems associated with aging and power-dependent response. Rutile resonators avoid these problems while retaining comparable sensitivity to surface impedance. Our cylindrical rutile resonators have a hollow bore and are excited in TE_01(n-d) modes, providing homogeneous microwave fields at the center of the resonator where the sample is positioned. Using a sapphire hot-finger technique, measurements can be made at sample temperatures in the range 1.1 K to 200 K, while the probe itself remains immersed in a liquid helium bath at 4.2 K. The novel apparatus described in this article is an extremely robust and versatile system for microwave spectroscopy, integrating several important features into a single system. These include: operation at high magnetic fields; multiple measurement frequencies between 2.64 GHz and 14.0 GHz in a single resonator; excellent frequency stability, with typical drifts < 1 Hz per hour; the ability to withdraw the sample from the resonator for background calibration; and a small pot of liquid helium separate from the external bath that provides a sample base temperature of 1.1 K.

Abstract:A high temperature superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) was fabricated for magnetocardiogram (MCG) measurement, and a single-channel dc SQUID magnetocardiograph was developed. According to clinical diagnosis standard, by sequentially adjusting the non-magnetic patient table with 5cm pitch in x and y directions the magnetic field signals perpendicular to the human chest on a rectangle grid of 5×5 over the chest area were recorded in a magnetically shielded room. The significant difference of magnetocardiogram between a healthy heart and the heart with right bundle branch block was observed. A large quantity of magnetocardiogram data for clinical diagnosis analysis were recorded with the system.

Abstract:Scanning SQUID microscope based on niobium junction DC SQUID has been developed. The SQUID is mounted inside the insulation vacuum of a cryostat, which is separated from room temperature samples by a 65μm thick sapphire window. The spatial resolution of the microscope is about 100–150μm and the magnetic field sensitivity is on the order of 3–60pT/Hz in magnetically unshielded environment. Various samples are being studied with the microscope.

Abstract:Scanning Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID) microscopy provides valuable information about magnetic properties of materials and devices. The magnetic flux response of the SQUID is often linearized with a flux-locked feedback loop, which limits the response time to microseconds or longer. In this work, we present the design, fabrication, and characterization of a novel scanning SQUID sampler with a 40-ps time resolution and linearized response to periodically triggered signals. Other design features include a micron-scale pickup loop for the detection of local magnetic flux, a field coil to apply a local magnetic field to the sample, and a modulation coil to operate the SQUID sampler in a flux-locked loop to linearize the flux response. The entire sampler device is fabricated on a 2 mm × 2 mm chip and can be scanned over macroscopic planar samples. The flux noise at 4.2 K with 100 kHz repetition rate and 1 s of averaging is of order 1 mΦ0. This SQUID sampler will be useful for imaging dynamics in magnetic and superconducting materials and devices.

Abstract:Scanning Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID) microscopy is a powerful tool for imaging local magnetic properties of materials and devices, but it requires a low-vibration cryogenic environment, traditionally achieved by thermal contact with a bath of liquid helium or the mixing chamber of a "wet" dilution refrigerator. We mount a SQUID microscope on the 3 K plate of a Bluefors cryocooler and characterize its vibration spectrum by measuring SQUID noise in a region of sharp flux gradient. By implementing passive vibration isolation, we reduce relative sensor-sample vibrations to 20 nm in-plane and 15 nm out-of-plane. A variable-temperature sample stage that is thermally isolated from the SQUID sensor enables the measurement at sample temperatures from 2.8 K to 110 K. We demonstrate these advances by imaging inhomogeneous diamagnetic susceptibility and vortex pinning in optimally doped yttrium barium copper oxide above 90 K.

Abstract:In this paper, a kind of simple magnetic shielding room developed by our lab was investigated, which can be accepted by high temperature rf SQUID system. And the operation conditions of this shielding room were also researched. In addition, a weak biomagnetic signal was measured by the complex systemmade of rf SQUID and the shielding room. The results show that this shielding room can decrease electromagnetic interferenceeffectively and ensure SQUID gradiometerto work stably in a long period. The complex MCG system based on this shielding room is able to detect weak biomagnetic signals and the resultantsignals present acceptable S/N ratio. The current research makes it possible to develop a practical low cost high temperature MCG system.

Abstract:The nano-superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) is considered one of the most sensitive magnetic sensors for the characterization of mesoscopic and microscopic magnetic moments. Therefore, it is suitable for measuring the Meissner effect in small superconductors that cannot generate large enough signals for commercial magnetometers. To achieve an optimized coupling, the sample is usually placed directly on a SQUID chip and as close to the SQUID washer as possible. Therefore, a large working temperature range of the nano-SQUID is desirable to measure a wider range of samples. Here, we achieved the measurement of the Meissner effect in a 25 μm-sized Nb and a 40 μm × 120 μm-sized FeSe crystals using a niobium nitride (NbN) nano-SQUID. This nano-SQUID has a usable magnetic flux modulation for temperatures up to 9.5 K. The flux noise is around 50–60 μΦ0 Hz−1/2 for the entire measurement system. The diamagnetic branches induced by the Meissner effect below the lower critical field were observed for both Nb and FeSe crystals with the NbN nano-SQUID device. In addition, at various temperatures, strong magnetic hysteresis arising from vortices pinning was also observed and analyzed for both Nb and FeSe crystals.
