Abstract:Winter city streets are impacted by climate deeply in winter,which bringing many negative factors to streets' winter environment design,this paper analyzed climate factors in winter city,combined with behavior characteristics of the people in the street environment,and introduced the concept of the "invitation"space design,then made sort description about the different levels of activity in streets,therefore,proposed "invitation"space design strategy in winter on the necessity activities,selectivity activity and sociability activities in streets,in order to stimulate the vitality of the urban streets environment in cold winter,and provide more diversified vision for design of the winter city streets in the future.

Ecological Urban Design Response To Cold Climate-Northern Winter Cities In China As An Example

Abstract:Climate is one of most important ecological components in urban space environment ecosystem and plays a very dominant role in ecological urban design. An ecological urban design should be firstly a climate responsive urban design which could adapt to regional macroclimate environment and improve urban microclimate environment effectively. Regional macroclimate plays a very important role in designs and constructions of urban built environment. While some designs and constructions of urban built environments could also create different kinds of urban microclimate environments including some uncomfortable ones. In this context, livability of urban built environment could be improved through certain ecological urban design based on considerations of regional macroclimate and urban microclimate. Compared with studies of ecological architecture design response to climate, those of ecological urban design are not developed very widely and deeply in China. With northern winter cities in China as an example, ecological urban design countermeasures response to cold climate in different levels are studied which include countermeasures based on adaptation to regional macroclimate such as advocating compact city form, improving public transportation, creating abundant winter landscape, and supplying fitting climate-protected facilities etc., and countermeasures based on improvement of urban microclimate including getting more sunshine and improving wind environment.

Abstract:Because people’s outdoor action was restricted by bad climate,inefficient uses of winter space of green land cut down on resident special public life needs and lead to long-term blankness of winter city landscape.This is the one problem of the most pressing solution of residential green plan.The paper adopts SWOT analysis method and the investigation method on the spot study different strategies of green land.The analysis and investigation show that there are four kinds of typical feature in residential area,viz.organic,natural,mixed and edge type.Green land of winter cities should embody fully chill feature and stress the influence of winter climate.This paper takes green land of Harbin as an example,by application of the different strategies,put forward the four kinds of countermeasure of urban residential mode of green plan.,viz.pattern of point + piece + strip,piece + strip,wedge + piece,and comprehensive countermeasure.

Abstract:The long winter time and the harsh outdoor environment cause many inconveniences of the outdoor activities to urban residents in severe cold areas. Therefore, it is urgent to study and improve the thermal environment in urban residential streets. This paper focuses on winter thermal environment of streets in open communities of northern China, by carrying out field measurements according to the characteristics of cold climate and urban residential areas. The results show that the aspect ratios of streets can directly affect their thermal environment. With the aspect ratio increases, the air temperature decreases and the wind speed increases. At the same time, facade openings can make the average globe temperature significantly increased in the streets. This paper provides basic data for the further study of thermal environment in urban streets and the optimization design of street spaces.

Abstract:The thermal environment problems of pedestrian streets space are becoming increasingly important with the growing rate of urbanization, especially in regions with hot summers and cold winters. Taking Cinnamomum camphora as an example, several urban design scenarios with dynamic setting parameters of streets orientation (N-S, E-W), aspect ratio (0.5, 1,1.5, 2) are simulated by ENVI-met to analyze the impact of the green coverage on the thermal comfort of the street canyons in Shanghai. Results showed that: (1) green coverage has an impact on the thermal comfort of the street both in summer and winter and the significance of this effect is affected by the orientation and aspect ratio of the streets. (2) In summer, with the increase in aspect ratio, N-S orientation streets need more and more green coverage to bring a significant impact on thermal comfort, while E-W orientation streets only need 24 % green coverage. (3) In winter, with the increase in aspect ratio, N-S orientation streets also need more green coverage to significantly reduce thermal comfort. For E-W orientation, only when the aspect ratio is 1/2, the green coverage can effectively reduce the thermal comfort of the street. (4) The planting layout had no significant effect on the thermal comfort effect of trees. Based on the above conclusions, the greening strategy was proposed for pedestrian streets in the hot summer and cold winter region in China.

Abstract:In urban areas, local microclimate is influenced by architectural forms, which will in turn affect human comfort. Taking Daqing as an example, this article studies the microclimate of a university campus in the severe cold area in China. Based on the space features of the streets, we categorize the streets into three types: open type, semi-open type, and street-entry type. Through analysis, this article researches microclimates of the three kinds of streets, the influence of building heating on the surrounding thermal environment, the relationship between streets’ morphology features and microclimate and human comfort (physiological equivalent temperature, PET). By study and analysis, we have the following findings: for open-type streets, the average globe temperatures of streets with different orientations can reach 1.3 °C in winter because of the influence of sidewalk trees. For semi-open-type streets, streets temperature is under the influence of the locating directions of buildings. The maximum air temperature difference among streets with different building arrangements reaches 2.1 °C in winter. For street-entry-type streets, the height–width ratios and orientations of streets are related to the continuity degree of the street interfaces. The building interface acts as a heating element and affect the surrounding thermal environment by heat convection and heat radiation. Analysis demonstrates that heat convection has a more obvious effect on rising surrounding temperature than heat radiation. Buildings with higher heat radiation witness higher globe temperature. For street-entry-type streets and semi-open-type streets, the SVF (sky view factor) and L/C (plane opening rate) of streets are negatively correlated with temperature and PET, but positively correlated with wind speed. If the SVF increases 0.1, the air temperature will reduce 0.1 °C, the wind speed will increase 0.19 m/s, and the PET will reduce 0.7 °C.

Abstract:With the rapid development of China's urbanization, the construction of high-rise buildings in cities increases a lot. High-rise settlements in northern winter cities develop very fast. The problems of outdoor public open space environment caused by high-rise residential building layout have begun to attract people's attention. Winter city has a long winter time and harsh climatic conditions. In order to improve the quality of public open space environment and create a livable environment in high-rise settlements, Harbin is taken as an example in this paper, combined with field surveys, computer simulation and other methods, and existing situation and problems of public open spaces in high-rise settlements are analyzed deeply. Then influence factors of public open space environment quality of high-rise settlements are studied. And from the aspects of location, layout, landscape and others, some planning and design measures of public open spaces in high-rise settlements response to cold climate are proposed.
Impacts of Vegetation Ratio, Street Orientation, and Aspect Ratio on Thermal Comfort and Building Carbon Emissions in Cold Zones: A Case Study of Tianjin

Abstract:This research highlights that street layouts, including the vegetation ratio, street orientation, and aspect ratio, are key in diminishing urban heat islands (UHIs), building energy use, and carbon emissions. The optimal street layout for minimal building energy consumption, carbon emissions, and maximal outdoor thermal comfort in Tianjin was established via field measurements, ENVI-met 5.6.1, Energy Plus simulations, and correlation analysis. The findings indicate the following: (1) The carbon emissions of winter residential heating energy consumption are 2.9–3.2 times higher than those for summer cooling. Urban design should thus prioritize winter energy efficiency and summer thermal comfort outdoors. (2) The summer street PET (physiological equivalent temperature) inversely correlates with the vegetation ratio and aspect ratio. Winter heating energy use inversely correlates with the street orientation and directly correlates with the aspect ratio. Adequate vegetation and proper orientation can decrease energy and carbon output while enhancing summer outdoor comfort. (3) Streets with an NW–SE orientation, H/W = 0.9, and 50% trees in summer yield the best thermal comfort, while those with an NE–SW orientation, H/W = 0.3, and 50% vegetative trees in winter produce the lowest carbon emissions. These insights are instrumental in refining urban streets and building designs in cold zones.

Abstract:Using city planning to promote public health is an important way to build 'healthy city'. The special climatic conditions of a winter city have special impacts on city environment, residents' physical and mental health and their behaviors. By analyzing the impacts that cold climate has on the public health in winter and the way that winter city planning affects the public health, the research comes up with two kinds of planning action pathways: active protection and initiative intervention. Research puts forward city spatial planning strategies containing: enhancing the safety and comfort extent of the winter outdoor environment, improving the pleasure extent of the winter visual environment, and promoting residents intercourse and fitness activities in winter, aiming at achieving the goal of promoting the public health in winter, enhancing the quality of winter city space environment and promoting the sustainable development of winter cities.

Abstract:The phenomenon of global warming and urban heat island has raised the attention for the outdoor thermal comfort. Vegetation in the improvement of urban micro-climate has been confirmed by a large number of scholars. The problem of the uncomfortable summer climate in China's Cold region didn't get enough research. In this paper, the summer thermal comfort of the street canyon has been studied. The main research intent is to analyze the relationship between the street tree pattern and the thermal comfort of street canyon. It's demonstrated that, in north-south street, it is suitable for the arrangement of street tree to be at the centre on one side of the street. The higher the height of the street tree, the more comfortable thermal environment the street gets. However, when the ratio of the street tree height to the street building is greater than 10:18, the improvement effect decreases. In east-west street, planting the street tree clinging to the street buildings can provide a better thermal comfort improvement effect. The result of this study can serve as a guide to the greening design in China B-cold region and other regions with similar climatic conditions.
A Field Study on Climate Comfortable Conditions of Urban Public Open Spaces in Marginal Season of Winter Cities

Abstract:In order to study the importance of climate comfortable conditions of urban public open spaces in marginal season of winter cities for people's outdoor activities, first, the paper ascertained the specific times of Harbin's outdoor and marginal seasons based on meteorological data from 1984 to 2013. Second, this paper conducted field survey, which includes in situ measurement and structured interview, in three typical urban public open spaces in marginal season. The calculated results show that Harbin has an outdoor season from Apr 25th to Oct 1st, and the spring marginal season is from Apr 4th to Apr 24th, the fall marginal season is from Oct 2nd to Oct 24th. At the same time, the results of in situ measurement show that there is great room for the improvement of climatic conditions of urban public open spaces in the marginal season of winter cities, especially the public open spaces near to the high-rise buildings and waterfront, and the apparent temperature in these two open spaces is about 3 degrees C lower than the air temperature simultaneously. The results of structured interview show that people would like to do some outdoor activities when it is nice weather outside in marginal season, and the regression analysis results show that people's outdoor activities time are severely affected by climate comfortable conditions in marginal season. They feel that fine microclimate is much more important for a person than enough facilities and green landscape of urban public open spaces in marginal season. The paper suggested that the specific times of outdoor and marginal seasons should be added to some urban design guidance as a specification in urban planning practice, and this paper advanced some urban planning strategies related to urban design to improve climatic conditions of urban public open spaces in the marginal seasons of winter cities.

Abstract:Northern high-latitude area has long and cold winter time.Minus effect on human settlement construction produced by regional climatic condition is a big problem to cold area developmem.In order to reduce minus effect and to overcome restriction of cold climate,many towns in cold areas of developed countries have made relative climatic plans according to climate condition.Based on studies about climatic planning experiences of developed countries,existing problems in plan-making of cold areas in China are pointed out,and some solutions are provided about supplementing contents of climatic planning, establishing climatic urban design control system and formulating design management policies for excitation, etc.
Exploring the Relationship between Green Space in a Neighbourhood and Cardiovascular Health in the Winter City of China: A Study Using a Health Survey for Harbin

Abstract:A severely cold climate has a significant impact on cardiovascular health, involving temperature, air environment, exercise and diet. Existing studies have revealed that green space, as an important health resource, may play a positive role in promoting cardiovascular health through the air environment and exercise. Studies focusing on the correlation between green space and cardiovascular health are rarely carried out in winter cities. The purpose of this paper is to take a winter city in China as an empirical case to explore the correlation between green space in a neighbourhood and cardiovascular health in a representative sample at the neighbourhood level, combining the results with Urban Residential Area Planning and Design Standards (GB50180-2018) in China and the existing research. The results showed that green space characteristics of a neighbourhood were related to cardiovascular disease and some of its risk factors. In neighbourhoods with a Green Space Ratio lower than 28%, residents had a higher risk of physical inactivity, overweight or obesity, hypertension and stroke. In neighbourhoods with a Green View Index lower than 15%, residents had a higher risk of physical inactivity, overweight/obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia and stroke. A correlation was found between evergreen tree configuration type and the prevalence of overweight/obesity and hypertension. No correlation was found between the type of sports field and cardiovascular disease and its risk factors, except for hypertension. Residents’ cardiovascular health scores also showed significant differences among neighbourhoods with different green space characteristics. Intervention efforts may benefit from emphasising the importance of improving the Green Space Ratio and Green View Index effectively in a neighbourhood to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
