Abstract:In this paper the butterfly effects of single mode laser oscillation are studied. It is shown that the detuning between laser oscillation and atomic transition frequency leads to a decrease in second threshold, which makes the demonstration of chaos theory in experiment easy.

Abstract:The authors investigate the lasing modes in fully chaotic polymer microstadiums under optical pumping. The lasing modes are regularly spaced in frequency, and their amplitudes oscillate with frequency. The numerical simulations reveal that the lasing modes are multiorbit scar modes. The interference of partial waves propagating along the constituent orbits results in local maxima of quality factor at certain frequencies. The observed modulation of lasing mode amplitude with frequency results from the variation of quality factor, which provides the direct evidence of wave interference effect in open chaotic microcavities.

Abstract:The decoherence of Rabi oscillation with multi-level processes in semiconductor quantum dots excited by laser pulses is investigated. By using population dynamic equations of multi-level system, the effect of three kinds of multi-level processes on the damping of Rabi oscillation in quantum dots are numerically simulated and discussed. The effect of biexciton can be neglected when the pulse width is larger than 5ps; the population leakage to wetting layer results in the decreasing of the amplitude and average of the population oscillation on the exciton ground state with the increasing of the excitation intensity; the effect of the two kinds of Auger capture processes on the Rabi oscillation and the spectral width of the photoluminescence from the exciton recombination are also discussed.

Abstract:Unstability and chaos of a detuned homogeneously broadened laser was studied. Under different conditions, the criterions, when a laser becomes unstable via a Hoft bifurcation and mode hopping, were given, which define the unstability margin of a laser. Moreover, by numerical simulation, the criterions were verified and it was found that Loreng unstability can trigger mode hopping unstability on certain conditions.

Abstract:A model for an open four-level atomic system driven by two fields is presented.Density matrix equations of motion are obtained by electric dipole and rotating wave approximations.Physical mechanism of lasing without inversion(LWI) is discussed.Effects of detuning on gain without inversion and population difference are studied.Dispersion equals to zero as two driving and probe fields are resonant.As one driving field(probe field) is resonant,the gain and the population difference versus detuning of driving field(probe field)show even symmetry,and the dispersion shows central symmetry.As two or three of driving and probe fields are off-resonance,the symmetries disappear.LWI gain is obtained when the dispersion equals to zero.When both driving and probe fields are off-resonance,the gain,the dispersion and the population difference change greatly.High dispersion without absorption is obtained by adjusting suitable parameters of the system.

Abstract:We study the spontaneous emission of a four-level atom with two transitions coupled to a reservoir that has a photonic bandgap near the band edge. Moreover, the transition from the upper level to an auxiliary level is driven by a laser. Considering the different detuning of the external driving field, we discuss some effects, such as a laser-induced dark line, a laser-induced line splitting, and a laser-induced pushing of a dressed state out of the bandgap, which originate from the quantum interference effect and control of the external driving field.

Abstract:A theoretical approach is proposed to deal with the detuning between the atom and cavity field in the one-photon mazer. Our starting point is to find a conserved quantity, which is characteristic of the atom plus field system.Resorting to this characteristic conserved quantity, we separate the Hamiltonian into two independent parts and then solve the Schrodinger equation of quantum scattering of an incident cold atom. We investigate the detuning effects on the one-photon induced emission probability and obtain some distinct results in contrast to the previous work.

Abstract:It is well known that nano-lasers (NLs), as important optical components, have attracted widespread attention for their output characteristics. In this paper, the dynamic behavior and time-delay concealment properties of NLs mutually coupled in open-loop, semi-open-loop, and closed-loop structures have been numerically investigated. We employ bifurcation diagrams and 0–1 chaos tests in our simulations to quantitatively analyze the dynamic properties of the system and introduce the autocorrelation function to evaluate the ability of the system to conceal the time-delay signature (TDS). In the meantime, the effects of the NL parameters and the controllable variables of the system on the TDS are studied. The results indicate that, compared with an open-loop structure without feedback, the mutual coupling scheme with added feedback is beneficial for the system to output high-quality chaotic signals. Furthermore, selecting a moderate Purcell factor F and a smaller spontaneous emission coupling factor β can achieve TDS concealment over a wider parameter range of injection intensity and frequency detuning.

Abstract:We use a probabilistic method to describe the effect of laser noise on the laser-atom interaction, in the case that the atom is a two level system without spontaneous emission. The stochastic differential equation for the laser-atom interaction is analyzed in the sense of perturbation approach, and we construct a stochastic process corresponding to the time evolution of the atom's wave function, whose extra randomness is induced by the laser noise. It also provides the layout of a theory for the possible experiment of measuring the laser line width by driving a narrow atomic transition.

Influence of the Phonon-Mediated Coupling on the Properties of A Single Quantum-Dot Laser

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the influence of the phonon-mediated coupling on the properties of the laser generated by a single red-detuned quantum dot (QD), where the QD is coherently driven and coupled to a microscopic cavity which can be engineered in a photonic band-gap (PBG) material. In the low-temperature limit, the phonon-mediated coupling is deleterious to the emission of photon into cavity field and the threshold behavior of the laser persists after the inclusion of the phonon-mediated processes. Without being engineered in the PBG material, if the damping rate kappa of the cavity is close to but smaller than the phonon-mediated spontaneous emission rate gamma of the dot, the photon statistics of the cavity field change from super-Poissonian to sub-Poissonian. The nonclassical effect can be achieved due to the phonon-mediated processes induced by the electron-phonon interaction and the off-resonant dot-cavity coupling. The nonclassical effect can be enhanced by the PBG material. When the effect of the thermal phonon is taken into account, the cavity field exhibits the super-Poissonian property. If kappa is much smaller than gamma, the phonon-mediated processes can lead to the increase (decrease) of the photons provided that the incoherent pumping rate is lower (higher) than the effective phonon-mediated threshold. But, if kappa is close to or larger than gamma, the emission of the photon may dominate the absorption process, strengthening the intensity of the cavity field.

Abstract:The quantum dynamics of a strongly coupled single quantum dot-cavity system with non-zero detuning in a phonon bath is investigated theoretically in terms of a perturbation treatment based on a unitary transformation and an operator displacement. The decoherence due to phonons as a function of the detuning between the cavity mode and exciton is obtained analytically. It is shown that the detuning has a significant impact on the quantum dot exciton lifetime. In realistic experimental conditions, the calculated exciton lifetimes are in good agreement with recent experimental observation (Hennessy et al 2007 Nature 445 896).

Abstract:A new form of induced transparency enabled by dynamical tunneling coupling of continuous chaos and discrete regular modes in a slightly deformed optical microcavity is demonstrated experimentally. An optical beam is focused on the cavity boundary and tuned on resonance with a high‐Q mode, which leads to destructive interference for the excitation of chaotic field and induces a transparency in the transmission. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with a model based on quantum scattering theory. This tunneling‐induced transparency is accompanied by extremely steep normal dispersion, and holds great potential in slow light and enhanced nonlinear interactions.

Multi-Level Effects in the High-Order Harmonic Generation Driven by Intense Frequency-Comb Laser Fields

Abstract:High harmonic generation (HHG) driven by intense frequency-comb laser fields can be dramatically enhanced via multiphoton resonance by tuning the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) shift, without increasing the driving intensity. However, the multiphoton-resonant enhancement (MRE) factor in the realistic atomic hydrogen is much smaller than that in a twolevel system. To study the deviation, we present a theoretical investigation of the multiphoton resonance dynamics of three-level systems driven by intense frequency-comb laser fields. The many-mode Floquet theorem (MMFT) is employed to provide a nonperturbative and exact treatment of the interaction between the quantum system and the laser fields. The investigations show that the dipole interaction of a two-level system with the third level affects the multiphoton resonance dynamics and enhances the HHG spectra. It is the dipole interaction of the excited level of the two-level system with other levels that results in the smaller MRE factor in the realistic atomic system.
Influence of Feedback Phase on Time Delay Signature and Chaos Bandwidth in a Laser subject to Dual Optical Feedback

Abstract:Semiconductor lasers subject to optical feedback can behave chaotically, which can be used as a source of randomness. The optical feedback, provided by mirrors at a distance, determines the characteristics of the chaos and thus the quality of the randomness. However, this fixed distance also shows itself in the intensity, an unwanted feature called the Time Delay Signature (TDS). One promising solution to suppress the TDS is using double optical feedback. We study this system numerically in this paper. In particular, we focus on the impact of the feedback phase, a sub-wavelength change in the position of the mirrors, on the TDS and chaos bandwidth (CBW) of the system. We show that by precisely setting the feedback parameters, including the feedback phases, the TDS can be suppressed, and that the feedback phase control is necessary rather than optional to robustly suppress the TDS. In addition, it is possible to suppress the TDS without loss of the CBW. At strong feedback rates the system can restabilize, and one can switch between a chaotic and steady state by changing only the feedback phase. Finally, we relate the feedback phase sensitivity to interference between the two delayed signals. This system is promising for applications of chaotic lasers as one can either suppress the TDS or increase the CBW.

Theory of Quenching Quantum Fluctuations of a Laser System with a Ladder-Type Configuration

Abstract:The theory of a laser system with a ladder-type configuration is studied in detail based on the quantum Langevin approach. By using an external field to link the lower lasing level with another atomic level, whose decay rate is much larger, laser intensity significantly increases and the quantum-limited linewidth can be quenched. We also discuss the spectrum of fluctuations of the output field, and the result shows that the fluctuations at low frequencies can be much suppressed too. On the other hand, this quenching approach can realize a laser output between two atomic levels, whose decay rates do not satisfy the usual lasing condition that the decay rate of the lower lasing level should be larger than that of the upper lasing level. It will be very useful to realize a laser output with the wavelength we want. This quenching approach has been widely used in the absorption spectrum of the ytterbium optical lattice clock and in the laser cooling approach for calcium atoms. Here we apply it in the stimulated emission of lasers.

Abstract:We experimentally investigated the effect of oscillator strength (radiative transition diagonality) on the performance of resonant phonon-based terahertz quantum cascade lasers that have been optimized using a simplified density matrix formalism. Our results show that the maximum lasing temperature (Tmax) is roughly independent of laser transition diagonality within the lasing frequency range of the devices under test (3.2–3.7 THz) when cavity loss is kept low. Furthermore, the threshold current can be lowered by employing more diagonal transition designs, which can effectively suppress parasitic leakage caused by intermediate resonance between the injection and the downstream extraction levels. Nevertheless, the current carrying capacity through the designed lasing channel in more diagonal designs may sacrifice even more, leading to electrical instability and, potentially, complete inhibition of the device's lasing operation. We propose a hypothesis based on electric-field domain formation and competition/switching of different current-carrying channels to explain observed electrical instability in devices with lower oscillator strengths. The study indicates that not only should designers maximize Tmax during device optimization but also they should always consider the risk of electrical instability in device operation.

Abstract:The following experiment phenomenon has been reported before: the power varying trend of o-light and e-light are opposite to each other with the laser cavity tuned, no matter what kind of Ne (Ne20 or the mixture of Ne20 and Ne22) is used and how much the mode split is. Now based on the theory of three-level perturbation, the phenomenon is analyzed with the self-consistent equations and the mutual gain saturation effect of Single Pair of Modes of the frequency splitting standing-wave He-Ne lasers.
The Influence of Non-Instantaneous Phase Conjugate Optical Feedback on the Dynamics of Semiconductor Laser

Abstract:Based on the physical origin of phase conjugation generated by four wave mixing, the response time of phase conjugate mirror is defined and the external cavity model for laser diode under non-instantaneous phase conjugate optical feedback is set up. Numerical analysis is given to discuss the influence of response time and frequency detuning on the characteristics of bifurcation and noise. The results indicate that the numbers and the range of chaotic bands can be restrained greatly by increasing the phase conjugate mirror's response time when the influence of noise is considered. When the response time reaches 1.5 ns, all the instabilities of laser diode are suppressed. If noises considered, the intensity of relative intensity noise decreases by several dB or even tens dB with the increase of response time and its spectrum peak moves to higher frequency, the feedback rate for coherence collapse also increases by one order. Since the frequency detuning is smaller compared to laser diode lasing frequency by more than three orders of magnitudes, it only influences the bifurcation diagram and almost have no influence on relative intensity noise.

Abstract:The effects of coherence and decoherence on lasing with or without population inversion in a fourlevel atomic system has been analyzed. It has shown that a change from a noninversion laser to a conventional inversion laser action can occur as the Rabi frequency of the driving field increases; another change from an inversion laser to a noninversion laser action can also occur due to the linewidth of the driving field.
