Abstract:In an attempt to understand the behavior of the total cross-section in electron-positron annihilation, it is suggested that two types of heavy quarks might exist with masses split only by the weak interactions. Implications and tests of this suggestion are discussed.

Abstract:Assuming that the strong interactions are mediated by a color-SU(3) gauge theory, we consider unusual possibilities for the constituents. The simplest possibility, "shiny" quarks, is that some new quarks are not triplets under color. We analyze the production and signatures for this possibility. Special attention is drawn to the spectroscopy of hadrons containing shiny quarks, some of which are absolutely stable. A more complicated (and possibly deeper dynamically) idea is that of "echo" quarks. These result when the unbroken color SU(3) arises from the breakdown of a larger SU(3) \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{} SU(3) gauge symmetry. The dynamical motivations for this speculation and the distinctive phenomena that follow from it are analyzed. We find that there is no evidence against echo quarks of quite low mass (\ensuremath{\gtrsim} 2 GeV), which might be produced at present-day accelerators.
Weak semileptonic decays of heavy baryons containing two heavy quarks

Abstract:In the heavy quark limit a heavy baryon which contains two heavy quarks is believed to be composed of a heavy diquark and a light quark. Based on this picture, we evaluate the weak semileptonic decay rates of such baryons. The transition form factors between two heavy baryons are associated with those between two heavy mesons by applying superflavor symmetry. The effective vertices of the W boson and two heavy diquarks are obtained in terms of the Bethe-Salpeter equation. Numerical predictions on these semileptonic decay widths are presented and they will be tested in future experiments. [S0556-2821(98)00721-8].

Abstract:It was observed recently that [L. Randall, Mark B. Wise, arXiv: 0807.1746 [hep-ph]], any particle in the Standard Model cannot decay to e+e− and γγ final states with comparably measurable branching ratios. This is also true for most extensions of the Standard Model, with the Randall–Sundrum model as an outstanding exception. In this Letter, we show that two-Higgs-Doublet-Models (2HDM) yield another possible exception if certain parameters are properly chosen. In addition, we have checked that this model survives the tests of low energy processes, including the anomalous magnetic moment and electric dipole moment of leptons, lepton-flavor-violating decays μ−→e−γ and e−e+e−.

Abstract:This paper concerns a method of describing hadrons that starts with the canonical front form Hamiltonian of QCD. The method is developed in the relatively simple context of QCD with only heavy quarks. We regulate its canonical Hamiltonian by introducing a vanishingly small gluon mass mg . For positive mg , the small- x gluon divergences become ultraviolet and hence they are renormalized in the same way the ultraviolet transverse divergences are. This is done using the renormalization group procedure for effective particles. Up to the second order of expansion of the renormalized Hamiltonian in powers of the quark-gluon coupling constant g , only the quark mass-squared and gluon-exchange divergences require counterterms. In these circumstances, we calculate an effective potential between quarks in heavy quarkonia in an elementary way, replacing all the quarkonium-state components with gluons of mass mg by only one component with just one gluon that is assigned a mass mG , comparable to or exceeding the scale of typical relative momenta of bound quarks. In the limit of mg→0 and large mG two results are obtained. (1) While the color-singlet quarkonium mass eigenvalue stays finite and physically reasonable in that limit, the eigenvalues for single quarks and octet quarkonia are infinite. (2) Besides the coulomb terms, the effective quark-antiquark potential is quadratic as a function of the distance and spherically symmetric for typical separations between quarks but becomes logarithmic and no longer spherically symmetric for large separations. Abstract:Consequences of the assumption that the $\ensuremath{\theta}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\tau}$ mass degeneracy is not accidental, but follows from some symmetry principle, are discussed. This assumption implies, among other things the existence of doublets of opposite parity for all particles of odd strangeness number, such as ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{0}$ and ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$, ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{0}$.

On the Importance of Three-Body Decays of Vector-Like Quarks

Abstract:It is a common feature of vector-like extensions of the electroweak sector to have near degenerate states, such as electroweak doublets. In simplified models, it is usually assumed that these have decay widths saturated by two-body channels. As a consequence, experimental searches can be done focusing on only one of the states of the doublet. Taking as an example case the light exotic electroweak doublet present in the Minimal Composite Higgs Model, we show that including three-body decays in the pair production process makes this separation unfeasible, since both states of the doublet will be present and contribute significantly to the signal. In addition, by recasting present searches in multileptonic channels, with a simplified cut-and-count analysis, a relevant increase in discovery reach or exclusion potential is obtained; this indeed motivates a more detailed analysis. This study shows how an inclusive search strategy, taking into account both the near degeneracy and the presence of three-body decays, will have greater discovery power and be more natural from a model building perspective.

Abstract:The theoretical description and data for inclusive semileptonic B decays have reached incredible precision. This motivated us to re-animate the discussion of possible Quark-Hadron Duality violations. There seems that there is currently no evidence of a failure of the Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE) used to compute observables for these decays. However, we might arrive at a point where an asymptotic behaviour of the HQE would limit a further increase of precision. We discuss this possibility and suggest a simple model, which can be used to study the effects of higher orders in the 1/ m b expansion and possible quark-hadron duality violations. We devise observables sensitive only to such higher-order effects to test the behaviour of the HQE. Using these observables we obtain a first estimate of possible quark-hadron duality violations using the measured q 2 moments.

Heavy-Quark Energy Loss Observed Via Muon Spectra In Pb-Pb Collisions At Root S(Nn)=5.5 Tev

Abstract:Based on Conesa del Valle et al (2008 Phys. Lett. B 663 202), we present the results for the nuclear modification factors R-AA and R-CP of the high transverse momentum (5 < p(t) < 60 GeV/c) distribution of muons in Pb-Pb collisions at LHC energies, in which two pseudo-rapidity ranges covered by the LHC experiments, |eta| < 2.5 and 2.5 < eta < 4, are investigated. Heavy-quark energy loss is taken into account by mass-dependent BDMPS quenching weights. Muons from semi-leptonic decays of heavy quarks (c and b) and from leptonic decays of weak gauge bosons (W and Z) are the main contributions to the muon p(t) distribution above a few GeV/c. The muons from W and Z, that dominates the high p(t), can be used as a medium-blind reference to observe the medium-induced suppression of beauty quarks.

Abstract:We study the nuclear modification factors RAA and RCP of the high transverse momentum (5<pt<60GeV/c) distribution of muons in Pb–Pb collisions at LHC energies. We consider two pseudo-rapidity ranges covered by the LHC experiments: |η|<2.5 and 2.5<η<4. Muons from semi-leptonic decays of heavy quarks (c and b) and from leptonic decays of weak gauge bosons (W and Z) are the main contributions to the muon pt distribution above a few GeV/c. We compute the heavy quark contributions using available pQCD-based programs. We include the nuclear shadowing modification of the parton distribution functions and the in-medium radiative energy loss for heavy quarks, using the mass-dependent BDMPS quenching weights. Muons from W and Z leptonic decays, that dominate the yield at high pt, can be used as a medium-blind reference to observe the medium-induced suppression of beauty quarks.
Towards the understanding of heavy quarks hadronization: from leptonic to heavy-ion collisions

Abstract:The formation of hadrons is a fundamental process in nature that can be investigated at particle colliders. As several recent findings demonstrate, with $\mathrm{e^+e^-}$ collisions as a "vacuum-like" reference at one extreme, and central nucleus--nucleus as a dense, extended-size system characterized by flow and local equilibrium at the opposite extreme, different collision systems offer a lever arm that can be exploited to probe with a range of heavy-flavour hadron species the onset of various hadronization processes. In this review, we present an overview of the theoretical and experimental developments. The focus is on open-heavy-flavour measurements. The comparison with model predictions and connections among the results in electron-positron, proton--proton, proton--nucleus, nucleus--nucleus collisions are discussed. After reviewing the current state, we suggest some prospects and future developments.

Abstract:We present a first calculation of the heavy flavor contribution to the longitudinally polarized deep-inelastic scattering structure function g1Q , differential in the transverse momentum or the rapidity of the observed heavy quark Q or antiquark Q ̄ . All results are obtained at next-to-leading order accuracy in QCD within the framework of a newly developed parton-level Monte Carlo generator that also allows one to study observables associated with the produced heavy quark pair such as its invariant mass distribution or its correlation in azimuthal angle. First phenomenological studies are carried out for various heavy quark distributions in a kinematic regime relevant for a future Electron-Ion Collider with a particular emphasis on the expected size of the corresponding double-spin asymmetries and their sensitivity to the still poorly constrained helicity gluon distribution. Low-energy Manifestations of Heavy Particles: Application to the Neutral Current

Abstract:It is argued that in broken-symmetry theories the decoupling of heavy particles is incomplete. Some possible manifestations of this effect in neutral-current processes and the decay ${K}_{L}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\mu}$ are discussed. In the case of the neutral current, heavy-particle effects may be calculated accurately including strong-interaction corrections. A new method of making such calculations is explained and its application to the neutral-current process discussed in detail. The method is more efficient than previous ones and is especially useful in calculations involving several mass scales.
String Consistency, Heavy Exotics, and the 750 GeV Diphoton Excess at the LHC: Addendum

Abstract:We study models with heavy exotics that account for the LHC $750$ GeV diphoton excess in light of current vector-like quark bounds. Utilizing only exotics that may appear in three-stack and four-stack D-brane models, we show that a narrow width diphoton excess can be accounted for while evading existing bounds if multiple exotics are added, with vector-like leptons of mass $M_L\lesssim 375$ GeV and vector-like quarks with masses up to $\simeq 3$ TeV. However, a large width $(\Gamma/M \sim 0.06)$, as suggested by the ATLAS data, cannot be easily accommodated in this framework. Renormalization group equations with GUT-scale boundary conditions show that these supersymmetric models are perturbative and stable. Type IIA compactifications on toroidal orbifolds allow for $O(10)$ Yukawa couplings in the ultraviolet.

Quark-hadron duality constraints on γZ box corrections to parity-violating elastic scattering

Abstract:We examine the interference \gamma Z box corrections to parity-violating elastic electron--proton scattering in the light of the recent observation of quark-hadron duality in parity-violating deep-inelastic scattering from the deuteron, and the approximate isospin independence of duality in the electromagnetic nucleon structure functions down to Q^2 \approx 1 GeV^2. Assuming that a similar behavior also holds for the \gamma Z proton structure functions, we find that duality constrains the \gamma Z box correction to the proton's weak charge to be \Re e\, \square_{\gamma Z}^V = (5.4 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{-3} at the kinematics of the Q_{\text{weak}} experiment. Within the same model we also provide estimates of the \gamma Z corrections for future parity-violating experiments, such as MOLLER at Jefferson Lab and MESA at Mainz.

Possibility of Narrow High-Mass Exotic States

Abstract:Narrow high-mass states can arise despite large phase space when two nearly degenerate states are coupled to the same dominant decay mode. Mixing via a final-state interaction loop diagram can produce one very broad state and one narrow state. Such a situation is generic in exotic hadrons where a color singlet with given flavor and spin quantum numbers can be constructed with two distinct internal color couplings of quarks. The simplest realization of this idea are the (Q Qbar q qbar) tetraquarks containing two heavy and two light quarks. We discuss possible experimental implications, including recent data from Belle.

Leptophobic Z' Boson and Parity-Violating Ed Scattering

Abstract:We study the impact of a leptophobic Z' gauge boson on the C-1q and C-2q parameters that describe the low-energy, parity-violating electron-quark neutral current interaction. We complement previous work by including the penguin-like vertex corrections, thereby completing the analysis of one-loop calculation up to (sic)(m(q')(2)/M-Z'(2)) terms. We analyze the sensitivity of these probes to the different couplings Z'(u) over barq (q u, c, t) and Z'(d) over barq (q = d, s, b) in a model- independent way that can be applied to any specific Z' scenario. We show that constraints from neutral kaon and heavy flavor studies preclude significant contributions from flavor nondiagonal couplings except for those involving top quarks. We apply our results to a light Z' with flavor diagonal couplings to up or down quarks, a scenario proposed in the literature to explain the CDF W plus dijet anomaly. We find that such a particle would not affect the C1q coefficients, but it would have a sizable impact on C-2q couplings that can be probed by future measurements of parity- violating deep inelastic scattering of polarized electrons off of deuterium.

Abstract:Heavy neutral gauge boson Z ′ is proposed in many new physics models. It has rich phenomena at the future muon collider. We study the properties of Z ′ boson with the process of and μ + μ − → W + W − . The discrepancy of Z ′ coupling to different types of particles can be shown in the cross section distributions around the resonance peak of various decay modes. Angular distributions of the final quark or lepton in process are sensitive to the parameters such as mass of Z ′ and the Z − Z ′ mixing angle. The interaction of new gauge boson coupling to the standard model gauge particles and Higgs boson are also studied through and . The cross section and the final particles' angular distributions with the contribution of Z ′ boson differ from those processes with only standard model particles. A forward-backward asymmetry defined by the angular distribution is provided to show the potential of searching for new physics at the muon collider. Especially, the beam polarization with certain value can effectively enlarge the forward-backward asymmetry.
