Abstract:With adequate building blocks, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can combine magnetic ordering and porosity. This makes MOFs a promising platform for the development of stimuli-responsive materials that show drastically different magnetic properties depending on the presence or absence of guest molecules within their pores. Here we report a CO2-responsive magnetic MOF that converts from ferrimagnetic to paramagnetic on CO2 adsorption, and returns to the ferrimagnetic state on CO2 desorption. The ferrimagnetic material is a layered MOF with a [D+–A−–D] formula, produced from the reaction of trifluorobenzoate-bridged paddlewheel-type diruthenium(ii) clusters as the electron donor (D) with diethoxytetracyanoquinodimethane as the electron acceptor (A). On CO2 uptake, it undergoes an in-plane electron transfer and a structural transition to adopt a [D–A–D] paramagnetic form. This magnetic phase change, and the accompanying modifications to the electronic conductivity and permittivity of the MOF, are electronically stabilized by the guest CO2 molecules accommodated in the framework.

Detailed Magnetic Study on the Formato-Bridged MOFs with Anion-Tunable Magnetic Properties

Abstract:Detailed studies of the structures, magnetic properties and photodimerization of a series of formato-bridged MOFs with the general formula M2(HCOO)3(4,4′-bpe)3(H2O)3(X) (4,4′-bpe = 4,4′-bipyridylethylene, M = Mn (1-X−), X− = ClO 4 − , NO 3 − , BF 4 − , I−, Br−; M = Co (2 −-X−), X− = ClO 4 − , NO 3 − ; M = Zn (3-X−), X− = NO3/−) were reported. Careful magnetic measurements on an oriented single crystal of 1-ClO 4 − determined the spin-flop magnetic phase diagram and some intrinsic parameters, such as the intralayer coupling J, the anisotropy field H A and the exchange field H E. Different anions can remarkably tune the magnetic properties of 1-X−, especially the critical fields of the spin-flop transition. Compound 2-ClO 4 − remained paramagnetic down to 2 K.

Abstract:Stimulus-responsive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be used for designing smart materials. Herein, we report a family of rationally designed MOFs which exhibit photoresponsive chiroptical and magnetic properties at room temperature. In this design, two specific nonphotochromic ligands are selected to construct enantiomeric MOFs, {Cu 2 (L-mal) 2 (bpy) 2 (H 2 O)·3H 2 O} n (1) and {Cu 2 (D-mal) 2 (bpy) 2 (H 2 O)·3H 2 O} n (2) ( mal = malate , bpy = 4 , 4 ’ − bipyridine ), which can alter their color, magnetism, and chiroptics concurrently in response to light. Upon UV or visible light irradiation, long-lived bpy − radicals are generated via photoinduced electron transfer (PET) from oxygen atoms of carboxylates and hydroxyl of malates to bpy ligands, giving rise to a 23.7% increase of magnetic susceptibility at room temperature. The participation of the chromophores (-OH and -COO − ) bound with the chiral carbon during the electron transfer process results in a small dipolar transition; thus, the Cotton effects of the enantiomers are weakened along with a photoinduced color change. This work demonstrates that the simultaneous responses of chirality, optics, and magnetism can be achieved in a single compound at room temperature and may open up a new pathway for designing chiral stimuli-responsive materials.

Abstract:A major challenge is the development of multifunctional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), wherein magnetic and electronic functionality can be controlled simultaneously. Herein, we rationally construct two 3D MOFs by introducing the redox active ligand tetra(4-pyridyl)tetrathiafulvalene (TTF(py)4 ) and spin-crossover FeII centers. The materials exhibit redox activity, in addition to thermally and photo-induced spin crossover (SCO). A crystal-to-crystal transformation induced by I2 doping has also been observed and the resulting intercalated structure determined. The conductivity could be significantly enhanced (up to 3 orders of magnitude) by modulating the electronic state of the framework via oxidative doping; SCO behavior was also modified and the photo-magnetic behavior was switched off. This work provides a new strategy to tune the spin state and conductivity of framework materials through guest-induced redox-state switching.

Abstract:Single crystallinity of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) enables the studies of their flexible behaviors with atomic precision.Here,we investigated the structural transformations triggered by photochemical cycloaddition and with temperature-dependent breathing in a series of pillared-layer MOF structures using a variety of pyrazolecarboxylate linkers for the layers and bipyridyl linkers as the pillars.The ethylenic double bonds from the pillars in close proximity undergo quantitative and seteroselective photochemical [2 +2] cycloaddition upon UV irradiation,transforming the MOFs into structures with cyclobutane-based pillars.Furthermore,reversible breathing of the new pillared-layer MOF was evidenced by the 10.8％ unit cell parameter change along c axis upon temperature change between 298 and 173 K.As revealed by single crystal X-ray diffraction,this transformation originates from the relative flattening of the wavy layers upon cooling.These two different types of characteristic structural transformations responding to inherent reactions and external stimuli happen at single crystalline state,providing a well-defined robust system with controlled flexibility.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are coordination polymers with potential voids constructed by organic ligands and metal ions. In this work, we employed a semi-rigid polycarboxylic acid ligand 5-(4-carboxyphenoxy)methyl)benzene-1-thio-3-dicarboxylic acid (H3L) with the flexible "–CH2-O-" group between the two phenyl groups to construct a new Cu(II)-MOF {[Cu2L(OH)]·DMF}n (1). The structure analysis reveals that the adjacent Cu(II) cations are bridged by oxygens from OH– anion and carboxy group to get a one dimensional infinite rod-shaped secondary building unit (SBU). Furthermore, compound 1 exhibits an intriguing three-dimensional MOF based on infinite rod-shaped SBUs and L3-. PXRD result shows compound 1 is still stable after placed in air for three months. The variable-temperature magnetic studies indicate antiferromagnetic behaviors of 1.

Synergism of Light-Induced [4 + 4] Cycloaddition and Electron Transfer Toward Switchable Photoluminescence and Single-Molecule Magnet Behavior in a Dy4 Cubane

Abstract:Molecular materials possessing switchable magneto-optical properties are of great interest due to their potential applications in spintronics and molecular devices. However, switching their photoluminescence (PL) and single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior via light-induced structural changes still constitutes a formidable challenge. Here, a series of cubane structures were synthesized via self-assembly of 9-anthracene carboxylic acid (HAC) and rare-earth ions. All complexes exhibited obvious photochromic phenomena and complete PL quenching upon Xe lamp irradiation, which were realized via the synergistic effect of photogenerated radicals and [4 + 4] photocycloaddition of the AC components. The quenched PL showed the largest fluorescence intensity change (99.72%) in electron-transfer photochromic materials. A reversible decoloration process was realized via mechanical grinding, which is unexpectedly in the electron-transfer photochromic materials. Importantly, an SMM behavior of the Dy analog was observed after room-temperature irradiation due to the photocycloaddition of AC ligands and the photogenerated stable radicals changed the electrostatic ligand field and magnetic coupling. Moreover, based on the remarkably photochromic and photoluminescent properties of these compounds, 2 demos were applied to support their application in information anti-counterfeiting and inkless printing. This work, for the first time utilizing the simultaneous modulation of photocycloaddition and photogenerated radicals in one system, realizes complete PL quenching and light-induced SMM behavior, providing a dynamical switch for the construction of multifunctional polymorphic materials with optical response and optical storage devices.

Abstract:Molecular magnets with optically controlled property have significant applications in data storage and quantum information processing. Herein, we report the optically controlled molecular magnetism of endohedral metallofullerenes, Sc3C2@C80 and DySc2N@C80, by incarcerating them into the pores of a photoswitchable azobenzene-functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) (AzoMOF). After ultraviolet (365 nm) irradiation, the isomerization of azobenzene groups in the AzoMOF was found to be able to modulate the spin relaxation of Sc3C2@C80 and also improve the single-molecule magnet behavior of DySc2N@C80. The photoisomerization of azobenzene side groups changes the host-guest interaction between metallofullerene and AzoMOF pores and endows them with the potential to modulate the magnetic properties with light. These findings offer an effective method to create smart molecular magnetic materials and also promote their applications in information recording, spintronics, and sensors.

Abstract:The tris(pyridin-4-yl)amine ligand was found to exhibit a radical-actuated coloration phenomenon, and a novel copper-based color-changeable metal-organic framework (MOF) was synthesized via this photoactive ligand. After light irradiation, the photogenerated stable radicals in this framework induced increasing amplitude of magnetization (32%) at room temperature, being the largest enhancement among radical-based photochromic systems.

Abstract:Through rational chemical design, and thanks to the hybrid nature of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), it is possible to prepare molecule-based 2D magnetic materials stable at ambient conditions. Here, we illustrate the versatility of this approach by changing both the metallic nodes and the ligands in a family of layered MOFs that allows the tuning of their magnetic properties. Specifically, the reaction of benzimidazole-type ligands with different metal centers (MII = Fe, Co, Mn, Zn) in a solvent-free synthesis produces a family of crystalline materials, denoted as MUV-1(M), which order antiferromagnetically with critical temperatures that depend on M. Furthermore, the incorporation of additional substituents in the ligand results in a novel system, denoted as MUV-8, formed by covalently bound magnetic double layers interconnected by van der Waals interactions, a topology that is very rare in the field of 2D materials and unprecedented for 2D magnets. These layered materials are robust enough to be mechanically exfoliated down to a few layers with large lateral dimensions. Finally, the robustness and crystallinity of these layered MOFs allow the fabrication of nanomechanical resonators that can be used to detect─through laser interferometry─the magnetic order in thin layers of these 2D molecule-based antiferromagnets.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with room-temperature magnetism are highly desirable but challenging due to the weak superexchange interaction between metal atoms. For this purpose, strengthening the hybridization between metal ion and organic linkage presents an experiment-feasible chemical solution to enhance the Curie temperature. Here, we report three 2D Cr(II) aromatic heterocyclic MOF magnets with enhanced Curie temperature by bridging Cr(II) ions with pyrazine, 1,4-diphosphinine, and 1,4-diarsenin linkers, i.e., Cr(pyz)2, Cr(diphos)2, and Cr(diarse)2, and using first-principles calculations. Our results show that Cr(pyz)2, Cr(diphos)2, and Cr(diarse)2 are ferrimagnetic semiconductors. In particular, the Curie temperature of Cr(pyz)2 is estimated to be about 344 K and could be enhanced to 512 and 437 K in Cr(diphos)2 and Cr(diarse)2 by strengthening the hybridization between Cr ions and organic linkers via d-π* direct exchange interaction. This study presents a prototype to obtain room-temperature magnetism in 2D Cr(II)-based MOF magnets for nanoscale spintronics applications.

Magnetodielectric coupling in a non-perovskite metal-organic framework

Abstract:Multiferroicity and magnetodielectric coupling in metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs) is rare and so far restricted mainly to formate-based systems with perovskite structure. In the course of this work we designed a tetragonal framework [Co(C16H15N5O2)], exhibiting spin-chains of Co2+ ions, which are bridged by an organic linker containing a dipolar nitrobenzene moiety. This compound shows relaxor-like ferroelectricity at 100 K, which is followed by the onset of complex magnetic order at 15 K, indicative of weak ferromagnetism. The clear anomaly of the dielectric constant at the magnetic ordering transition indicates magnetodielectric coupling, which is also confirmed by magnetic-field dependent dielectric measurements. Weak ferromagnetism and magnetodielectric coupling, both probably result from a significant Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which cants the spin structure and locally breaks inversion symmetry. We document that the introduction of dipolar nitrobenzene as building block in the crystal structure paths the way to design new multiferroic and magnetodielectric MOFs.

Abstract:An intermediate in photoinduced magnetization process for the photomagnetic high-spin molecule [Mo-IV(CN)2(CN-CuL)(6)](8+) is studied with quantum chemistry calculations of the density functional theory and the ab initio multireference configuration interaction methods. It is found that the intramolecular electronic transfer from Mo-IV to Cu-II leads one trigonal-bipyamid coordinated Cun(II) to be changed to the tetrahedral coordinated Cut with the light irradiation. The calculated magnetic properties show that the paramagnetic system [Mo-IV(CN)(2)(CN-Cu"L)(6)](8+) with six isolated spin 1/2 Cu ions is changed to ferromagnetic coupling high-spin system [Mo-v(CN)(2)(CN-Cu"L)(5)(CN-(CuL)-L-1)](8+). These calculations will help to understand photoinduced magnetization phenomenon and provide a clue for the synthesization of new reversible photoinduced magnetic compounds. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Integrating magnetic and optical properties into a metal-organic framework (MOF) remains a great challenge. Herein, we have reasonably constructed two 3D magnetooptical MOFs by incorporating a [IrIII(ppy)2(bpy)]+-based fluorescent metalloligand and magnetic LnIII centers. The alternating arrangements of Δ- or Λ-[IrIII(ppy)2(bpy)]+ endow these MOFs with enhanced optical properties. Moreover, the use of DyIII leads to field-induced slow magnetic relaxation. This work provides an effective strategy for the preparation of magnetooptical bifunctional MOFs.

Modulating the Architectures of Cobalt Metal–Organic Frameworks to Fine-tune Slow Magnetic Relaxation Behaviors

Abstract:By utilizing two similar tetrapyridine ligands, tetrakis(4-pyridyloxymethylene)methane (L1) and tetrakis(3-pyridyloxymethylene)methane (L2), four distinct metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), with formulas [Co(NCS)2(L1)]·CH3OH (HUST-13, HUST = Huazhong University of Science and Technology), [Co(NCS)2(L1)] (HUST-14), [Co(NCS)2(L2)]·2(CH3OH) (HUST-15), and [Co(NCS)2(L2)] (HUST-16), have been successfully constructed by adjusting the reaction solvents. After structural characterization, four Co-MOFs exhibit versatile topological structures and a single cobalt node with octahedron configuration. The synergistic effect between the steric configuration of ligands and the structural director of solvent molecules must be responsible for the generation of the distinct topological structures. Magnetic studies reveal the presentation of different slow magnetic relaxation phenomena in these Co-MOFs, which should be ascribed to the different orientations of the magnetic anisotropic axis of cobalt ions in the corresponding frameworks. Abstract:The reaction of 5-fluorine-3-(3,5-dicarboxylphenxoy)benzoic acid (H3L) with cobalt(II) salt in presence of 1,1'-(1,4-butanediyl)bis (imidazole) (bib) linker yielded two new metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with compositions [Co4(μ3-OH)2(H2O)2(L)2 (bib)1.5(CH3CN)·3H2O·CH3CN] (1) and [Co8(μ3-OH)4(L)4 (bib)4·8CH3CN] (2). The single crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that 1 exhibited an unusual 3D 3,8-connected framework with 3,8T25 topology based on [Co4(μ3-OH)2] tetranuclear cobalt clusters as secondary building units (SBU) with a (43) (412·54·64·88) Schläfli symbol. In 2, by substituting the CH3CN with neutral N-ligand, a 3D 3,8-connected MOF with 3,10T9 topology and a point symbol of {418.624.83}.{43}2 has been obtained. This represents a highly connected uninodal network topology presently known for flexible carboxylate-based MOF systems. Both the MOFs have been used as photocatalysts for photodegradation of a model organic dye methyl violet (MV). The photocatalytic experiments demonstrated that both 1 and 2 displayed efficient photocatalytic performances to degrade MV under UV irradiation. The plausible mechanism through which both the MOFs displayed photocatalytic properties have been proposed by using band gap calculations.

Abstract:By the coordination assembly of a redox photoactive functional motif and a cyanide-bridged moiety, a cyanide-bridged MnII−FeIII compound with large photoinduced magnetic change at room-temperature due to photoinduced electron transfer was obtanied. This compound also shows unprecedented radical-quenched spin glass in molecule based magnets.
