Abstract:We study regularity properties of frequency measures arising from random substitutions, which are a generalisation of (deterministic) substitutions where the substituted image of each letter is chosen independently from a fixed finite set. In particular, for a natural class of such measures, we derive a closed-form analytic formula for the -spectrum and prove that the multifractal formalism holds. This provides an interesting new class of measures satisfying the multifractal formalism. More generally, we establish results concerning the -spectrum of a broad class of frequency measures. We introduce a new notion called the inflation word - spectrum of a random substitution and show that this coincides with the -spectrum of the corresponding frequency measure for all . As an application, we obtain closed-form formulas under separation conditions and recover known results for topological and measure theoretic entropy.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the spectrality of a class of Moran measures $\mu_{\mathcal{P},\mathcal{D}}$ on $\mathbb{R}$ generated by $\{(p_n,\mathcal{D}_n)\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$, where $\mathcal{P}=\{p_n\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ is a sequence of positive integers with $p_n>1$ and $\mathcal{D}=\{\mathcal{D}_{n}\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ is a sequence of digit sets of $\mathbb{N}$ with the cardinality $\#\mathcal{D}_{n}\in \{2,3,N_{n}\}$. We find a countable set $\Lambda\subset\mathbb{R}$ such that the set $\{e^{-2\pi i \lambda x}|\lambda\in\Lambda\}$ is a orthonormal basis of $L^{2}(\mu_{\mathcal{P},\mathcal{D}})$ under some conditions. As an application, we show that when $\mu_{\mathcal{P},\mathcal{D}}$ is absolutely continuous, $\mu_{\mathcal{P},\mathcal{D}}$ not only is a spectral measure, but also its support set tiles $\mathbb{R}$ with $\mathbb{Z}$.

Abstract:We prove that the Beurling dimensions of the spectra for a class of Moran spectral measures are in 0 and their upper entropy dimensions. Moreover, for such a Moran spectral measure μ, we show that the Beurling dimension for the spectra of μ has the intermediate value property: let t be any value in 0 and the upper entropy dimension of μ, then there exists a spectrum whose Beurling dimension is t. In particular, this result settles affirmatively a conjecture involving spectral Bernoulli convolution in Fu et al. (2018) [20]. Furthermore, we prove that the set of the spectra whose Beurling dimensions are equal to any fixed value in 0 and dim ‾ e μ has the cardinality of the continuum.

Abstract:Let be a compatible tower on and let be the Moran measure generated by infinite convolutions of discrete measures induced by them. In this paper, we first prove that under certain situations, the compatible tower condition can ensure that is a spectral measure, that is the Hilbert space admits an exponential orthonormal basis. Furthermore, if we restrict to be a class of generalized Sierpinski-type family, then we obtain that the existence of compatible tower and the spectrality of are equivalent.

Abstract:Summary. We compute the Hausdorff dimension and the packing dimension of subsets of Moran fractals with prescribed mixed group frequencies. For example, if E denotes the set of real numbers x in [0, 1] for which the group of digits 1, 2, 3, 4 in the decimal expansion of x occurs with relative frequency t_1 ∈ [0, 1] and the group of digits 0, 1, 2, 8, 9 in the decimal expansion of x occurs with relative frequency t_2 ∈ [0, 1] , then our results shows that dim_ H E = dim_ P E = - 1/log 10 log ( t^t_1_1 t^t_2_2 (1 - t_1)^1-t_1 (1 - t_2)^1-t_2/2^t_13^1-t_1) , where dim H denotes the Hausdorff dimension and dim P denotes the packing dimension. Observe that the two groups of digits with prescribed frequencies, namely 1, 2, 3, 4 and 0, 1, 2, 8, 9, are mixed , i.e. they are not disjoint. Previous work [LD, O1, V] has investigated the non-mixed case. In this paper we investigate the more difficult problem of finding the Hausdorff dimension and packing dimension of subsets of Moran fractals with prescribed mixed group frequencies.

On the multivariate multifractal formalism: examples and counter-examples

Abstract:In this article, we investigate the bivariate multifractal analysis of pairs of Borel probability measures. We prove that, contrarily to what happens in the univariate case, the natural extension of the Legendre spectrum does not yield an upper bound for the bivariate multifractal spectrum. For this we build a pair of measures for which the two spectra have disjoint supports. Then we study the bivariate multifractal behavior of an archetypical pair of randomly correlated measures, which give new, surprising, behaviors, enriching the narrow class of measures for which such an analysis is achieved.

Abstract:Let $\rho=(\frac{p}{q})^{\frac{1}{r}}<1$ for some $p,q,r\in\mathbb{N}$ with $(p,q)=1$ and $\mathcal{D}_{n}=\{0,1,\cdot\cdot\cdot,N_{n}-1\}$, where $N_{n}$ is prime for all $n\in\mathbb{N}$, and denote $M=\sup\{N_{n}:n=1,2,3,\ldots\}<\infty$. The associated Borel probability measure $$\mu_{\rho,\{\mathcal{D}_{n}\}}=\delta_{\rho\mathcal{D}_{1}}*\delta_{\rho^{2}\mathcal{D}_{2}}*\delta_{\rho^{3}\mathcal{D}_{3}}*\cdots$$ is called a Moran measure. Recently, Deng and Li proved that $\mu_{\rho,\{\mathcal{D}_{n}\}}$ is a spectral measure if and only if $\frac{1}{N_{n}\rho}$ is an integer for all $n\geq 2$. In this paper, we prove that if $L^{2}(\mu_{\rho, \{\mathcal{D}_{n}\}})$ contains an infinite orthogonal exponential set, then there exist infinite positive integers $n_{l}$ such that $(q,N_{n_{l}})>1$. Contrastly, if $(q,N_{n})=1$ and $(p,N_{n})=1$ for all $n\in\mathbb{N}$, then there are at most $M$ mutually orthogonal exponential functions in $L^{2}(\mu_{\rho, \{\mathcal{D}_{n}\}})$ and $M$ is the best possible. If $(q,N_{n})=1$ and $(p,N_{n})>1$ for all $n\in\mathbb{N}$, then there are any number of orthogonal exponential functions in $L^{2}(\mu_{\rho, \{\mathcal{D}_{n}\}})$.

Abstract:Intermediate dimensions are a class of new fractal dimensions which provide a spectrum of dimensions interpolating between the Hausdorff and box-counting dimensions. In this paper, we study the intermediate dimensions of Moran sets. Moran sets may be regarded as a generalization of self-similar sets generated by using different class of similar mappings at each level with unfixed translations, and this causes the lack of ergodic properties on Moran set. Therefore, the intermediate dimensions do not necessarily exist, and we calculate the upper and lower intermediate dimensions of Moran sets. In particular, we obtain a simplified intermediate dimension formula for homogeneous Moran sets. Moreover, we study the visualization of the upper intermediate dimensions for some homogeneous Moran sets, and we show that their upper intermediate dimensions are given by Mobius transformations.

Abstract:In this study, we will introduce an innovative and comprehensive multifractal framework, substantiating counterparts to the classical findings in multifractal analysis and We embark on an exploration of the mutual singularity existing between the broader multifractal Hausdorff and packing measures within an expansive framework. An exemplar of this framework involves the application of the " second-order " multifractal formalism to our core results, elucidating a realm of compact subsets within a self-similar fractal structure — a familiar illustration of an infinite-dimensional metric space. Within this context, we provide estimations for both the overall Hausdorff and packing dimensions. It is noteworthy that these outcomes offer novel validations for theorems underpinning the multifractal formalism, rooted in these comprehensive multifractal measures. Furthermore, these findings remain valid even at points q where the multifractal functions governing Hausdorff and packing dimensions diverge. Additionally, we introduce the concepts of lower and upper relative multifractal box dimensions, accompanied by the general Rényi dimensions. A comparison is drawn between these dimensions and the general multifractal Hausdorff dimension, along with the general multifractal pre-packing dimension. Finally, we establish density conclusions pertaining to the multifractal extension of the centered Hausdorff and packing measures. Specifically, we unveil a decomposition theorem akin to Besicovitch's theorem for these measures. This theorem facilitates a division into two components – one characterized as regular and the other as irregular – thus enabling a targeted analysis of each segment. Following this dissection, we seamlessly reintegrate these segments while preserving their intrinsic density attributes. The impetus behind investigating these comprehensive measures arises when a set E holds either a conventional Hausdorff measure of zero or infinity; In such cases, we can identify a function φs that bestows a positive and finite general Hausdorff measure upon the set E , and studies the dimensions of infinitely dimensional sets.

Abstract:In practical calculations of a multifractal spectrum only limited data are available due to data overflow, measurement errors and limited calculation time. An effective method to reduce the data overflow is proposed. Some parameters are introduced to evaluate the incomplete degree of a partial multifractal spectrum. Quantitative expressions of the evaluation parameters on the partial multifractal spectra calculated using a statistical method for the Cantor sets p/1−2p/p and p/0/1−p are derived. Approximate evaluation parameters of the partial multifractal spectra calculated using the statistical method are estimated for two examples with a random fractal character. The characteristic of the evaluation parameters for the above examples is discussed in detail.
Geometric and Combinatorial Properties of Self-similar Multifractal Measures

Abstract:For any self-similar measure $\mu$ in $\mathbb{R}$, we show that the distribution of $\mu$ is controlled by products of non-negative matrices governed by a finite or countable graph depending only on the IFS. This generalizes the net interval construction of Feng from the equicontractive finite type case. When the measure satisfies the weak separation condition, we prove that this directed graph has a unique attractor. This allows us to verify the multifractal formalism for restrictions of $\mu$ to certain compact subsets of $\mathbb{R}$, determined by the directed graph. When the measure satisfies the generalized finite type condition with respect to an open interval, the directed graph is finite and we prove that if the multifractal formalism fails at some $q\in\mathbb{R}$, there must be a cycle with no vertices in the attractor. As a direct application, we verify the complete multifractal formalism for an uncountable family of IFSs with exact overlaps and without logarithmically commensurable contraction ratios.

Abstract:Many complex systems generate multifractal time series which are long-range cross-correlated. Numerous methods have been proposed to characterize the multifractal nature of these long-range cross correlations. However, several important issues about these methods are not well understood and most methods consider only one moment order. We study the joint multifractal analysis based on partition function with two moment orders, which was initially invented to investigate fluid fields, and derive analytically several important properties. We apply the method numerically to binomial measures with multifractal cross correlations and bivariate fractional Brownian motions without multifractal cross correlations. For binomial multifractal measures, the explicit expressions of mass function, singularity strength and multifractal spectrum of the cross correlations are derived, which agree excellently with the numerical results. We also apply the method to stock market indexes and unveil intriguing multifractality in the cross correlations of index volatilities.
