Abstract:This study compares the evolution of container port systems in China and the USA in terms of port throughput, number of container ports and the concentration level in the container port system, based on the time-series data on these three features over the period 1979-2009 for China and 1970-2009 for the USA. The results show that the densities of container ports in the two countries are similar, and their evolutionary processes are alike, which has led to a comparable market structure in the port industries of the two countries. In addition, the disparities between container ports closely represent the unevenness in the regional economic development. We further compare the port management regimes of the two countries in terms of the administrative processes for port development and expansion, the ownership structure and the providers of port functions, which offer some explanation on the dynamics of port evolution in the two countries. In conclusion, it can be seen that the evolution of the container port system and the management regime in the USA can be a de facto reference for the future development of the Chinese container port system.
Evolution and Research Trends of Container Shipping

Abstract:The shipping industry was transformed by the expansion of international trade and technological innovation, notably containerization, since the 1960s. Accordingly, this was followed by a significant increase in research addressing different aspects of container shipping. Despite such availability, important questions have remained unanswered: what are the major contributions that the research community has made to the container shipping industry, global and regional economies? Have their contributions been skewed towards particular themes, directions, and geographical areas? What can the shipping research community learn from the evolution and trends of container shipping research so that they can continue to contribute to the well-being of the global and regional economies? To address these questions, the paper undertakes a critical review and analysis on the evolution and trends of research in container shipping in the past four decades, based on a collection of 282 papers investigating different topics in container shipping featuring in major scholarly journals between 1967 and 2012. The study enables the shipping research community to enhance self-understandings and identifies major gaps for further research.

Abstract:While traditional port literature uses origin and destination pairs in global shipping networks, recent developments of dry ports in the hinterland, feeder service networks, and heavy foreign trade traffic make the ports in Bohai Bay a unique case in the analysis of inter-port connectivity and competitiveness. Using an integrated port connectivity index to define the above features, the advantages and challenges of individual ports can be assessed in a dynamic interconnected environment. The model can provide unbiased port development strategies for each port to ensure long-term sustainability. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:This review interprets recent studies of the interactions between the competition of gateway seaports and the accessibility of landside transportation links to inland regions. Port competition is treated as part of a rivalry between two transportation chains. This article identifies the main modeling approaches and defines the different types of hinterland access systems described in the literature. A general theoretical framework is then proposed to incorporate those key components. The importance of the proposed framework is revealed by comparing and extending results from the literature. Major assumptions that need further empirical verification are identified and discussed, and related empirical studies are reviewed. Finally, avenues for further research are discussed.

Abstract:This paper investigates the attractiveness of ports in West Africa through the development of a container shipping lines' port choice methodology. Although many multi-criteria decision-making methods have been developed and applied to facilitate a rational port choice process, few have investigated the criteria used by shipping lines when selecting ports in West Africa. With the rapid economic development of West Africa, the task of establishing a rational model to guide shipping lines to choose their favourite ports in the region becomes urgent. In this work, 16 criteria are identified to assist shipping lines in port choice from four perspectives including adequate infrastructure, port location, port charge, and port administration/port efficiency. In order to quantitatively evaluate these criteria, an analytical hierarchy process approach is used to make use of subjective judgements to compensate the incompleteness of objective data. One of the important findings from this study is that port infrastructure is the most crucial criterion in terms of the port attractiveness in West Africa. It is followed by port draught, political stability, market size/cargo volume, and international networks. The research outcomes also indicate that the port of Abidjan is the most attractive container port in West Africa, followed by Dakar when all the identified important criteria are taken into account.

Abstract:<p>Against the background of provincial port integration in China, provincial port groups have become critical market players in the port industry. It has become necessary to review the evolution of the port system in Chinese coastal regions from a provincial perspective. This paper investigates the evolution of the Chinese port system by treating eleven coastal provinces as the units of analysis. The port system is categorized into four segments according to cargo type, namely, containers, solid bulk cargo, general cargo and liquid bulk cargo. Multiple methods are applied to study the port system from the perspectives of market shares, cargo concentrations, the port hierarchy and port specialization. The findings suggest that no province holds a leading market position in all cargo sectors, and interprovincial port competition remains intense. The degree of specialization in the provincial port systems is generally moderate, though Hebei Province is an exception with a high level of port specialization due to its special geographical location. This paper also elaborates on several policy implications for provincial port groups.</p>

Abstract:The main port in the Yangtze River Delta shifted from Yangzhou in the Tang Dynasty to Ningbo and Shuangyu in the Song, Yuan and Ming dynasties, and afterwards to Shanghai before the opening-up in modern times. It indicates the tendency from north to south and from south to east. The main port and other regional ports constructed an organic and systematic network. The end of this paper studies the port location, natural environment, hinterland development, international relations, and analyzes the factors that made possible the shift of the main port.
An empirical research on efficiency of port container terminal collection and distribution system from the perspective of supply chain system

Abstract:As port is an important link of international economy and trade,port competitiveness is an indicator of the national power.Port efficiency,especially the efficiency of port container terminal collection and distribution system is an important part of port competitiveness.In this paper,we consider port container terminal collection and distribution system as a whole and empirically study its technical efficiency,pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency from the perspective of supply chain system.The results indicate that the technical and scale efficiency of the port container terminal collection and distribution systems is mostly low and the pure technical efficiency is relatively high;the reasons are also explored.

Abstract:With fast development of economic and technology all over the world, the prosperity of bulk commodity markets raise more demands on bulk commodity logistics. And more and more bulk commodity transaction platform have been established in China. Therefore the problem that how to make more contribution to the supply chain and provide more value-added services become a new matter faced by the port authorities. Most of the ports at home are still remain in traditional state and play a passive role in the chain. This article offering up supply chain orientation as basic theory, analyzed that whether port-oriented bulk commodity supply chain can be built. It turns out that the new business model should be constructed.

Abstract:With the integrative development of the Yangtze River Delta,Shanghai Port and Ningbo-Zhoushan Port,two most important ports within the Yangtze River Delta,should cooperate with each other so as to avoid homogeneous compe-tition and establish an international shipping center.On the basis of the analysis of the advantages and drawbacks,compe-tition conditions and development trends,The authors conclude that it is possible for the two ports to conduct cooperation based on labor division,and further put forward some fundamental approaches for the two ports’ integration.It is suggested that Shanghai Port should focus on core businesses like containers and establish itself into an international port of high standard services,while Ningbo-Zhoushan Port should develop itself into a hub port dealing with transferring and transport-ing.

Abstract:With the continuous advancement of the global economy and international trade, the competition among ports becomes increasingly fierce. Numerous studies show that evaluation methods of port dominance can effectively quantify the appropriate dominance index and find the weak links to enhance ports’ comprehensive competitiveness. This paper summarizes the port dominance evaluation methods in the existing literature and expounds their importance based on the development of information technology in shipping activities. Moreover, the application scope, the advantages, and disadvantages of current evaluation methods are explained using qualitative, quantitative, deductive, and retrospective methods. It was found that, with the development of information technology, evaluation methods are becoming more comprehensive, targeted, specialized, refined, digitalized, and intelligentized. It was also found that since existing studies often adopt single-faceted evaluation methods and select a single factor for evaluation, they cannot effectively analyze and evaluate the real advantages of the port. In addition, the present paper discusses the prospects of ports and potential research.

Abstract:Under the impact of colonial powers from capitalist nations, modern China has experienced significant transformations in its economic and geographic landscape. Coastal ports have emerged as crucial gateways for China’s engagement with the capitalist world. The Bohai Bay region in contemporary China holds immense importance due to the influence of Beijing as the capital city and the geopolitical dynamics of East Asia. This area witnessed intense competition among various capitalist countries to establish ports and trade markets. Eventually, Britain and Japan successively emerged as dominant players in international trade within the Bohai Bay ports. Backed by favorable port conditions and financial and technological support from colonial powers, ports such as Qingdao, Dalian, and Tianjin rapidly ascended and became regional centers within the Bohai Bay region. Through control over customs operations, colonial powers gained mastery over the hinterland trade markets connected to these ports. The development of railway and road networks facilitated a two-way transportation system, connecting colonial countries, ports, railway hubs, traffic nodes, towns, and counties. Consequently, the spatial pattern of intensive agricultural production in modern China began to take shape under the influence of port trade and railway development. Ports served as critical trade transfer stations for capitalist nations to exploit China’s resources and unload industrial products.
Research on Sustainable Port: Evaluation of Green Port Policies on China's Coasts

Abstract:Increasing port pollution has forced governments to enact policies related to green ports to maintain the sustainability of maritime transportation. In this article, we established a policy evaluation system based on the PMC (policy modeling consistency) index model to evaluate 17 green port-related policies currently enacted on coastal China, providing a new perspective on existing maritime policy evaluations. The results show that the average overall consistency of the policies is 7.16 with "good" performance, and no policy is "low" consistency. While this suggests that the existing policy design is sound, some deficiencies exist, such as insufficient cooperation between governments and insufficient emphasis on incentives. We provide recommendations for improvement based on these deficiencies and analyzed and optimized every policy in detail. Meanwhile, we found that policy texts from southern ports perform better, contrary to the previous view. The discovery could be a good entry point for future research. We also offer some suggestions for the development of green ships in China. The research makes these contributions and may provide some insights for policymakers.

Abstract:By introducing the concept of Relative Concentration Index (RCI), this paper quantifies the relationship between port function and city function, and determines the degree of interdependence between port and city. By analyzing the status and evolution of the relationship between 26 major port cities in China since 1990, this paper summarizes the general rules for the development of the relationship between port function and city function in China, which is unbalanced. The evolution of relationship between port and city is a gradual process, different port cities have different evolution cycles, port cities with different development scales have their own balance. Finally, this paper puts forward how to realize the new development stage of "Port flourishing with city".

Abstract:With the global economy's relentless growth and heightened environmental consciousness, sustainable maritime transport emerges as a pivotal development trajectory for the shipping sector. This study systematically analyzes 478 publications searched in the Web of Science Core Collection, from 2000 to 2023, utilizing bibliometric methods to investigate the application areas in sustainable development within the shipping industry. This study begins with an analysis of annual publication trends, which reveals a substantial expansion in research endeavors within this discipline over recent years. Subsequently, a comprehensive statistical evaluation of scholarly journals and a collaborative network assessment are conducted to pinpoint the foremost productive journals, nations, organizations, and individual researchers. Furthermore, a keyword co-occurrence methodology is applied to delineate the core research themes and emerging focal points within this domain, thereby outlining potential research directions for future research. In addition, drawing on the keyword co-occurrence analysis, the advancements in intelligent shipping technologies and green port construction applications within sustainable maritime transport are discussed. Finally, the review discusses the existing challenges and opportunities of sustainable maritime transport from a theoretical and practical perspective. The research shows that, in terms of intelligent shipping technology, data security and multi-source data are the focus that people need to pay attention to in the future; a trajectory prediction for different climates and different ship types is also an area for future research. In terms of green ports, Cold Ironing (CI) is one of the key points of the green port strategy, and how to drive stakeholders to build sustainable green ports efficiently and economically is the future developmental direction. This review serves to enhance researchers' comprehension of the current landscape and progression trajectory of intelligent shipping technologies, thereby fostering the continued advancement and exploration in this vital domain.

Rank-size distribution changes and transportation network connections of the coastal container port system in Chinese mainland since 1985

Abstract:Since the beginning of the 21st century, many coastal cities of Chinese mainland have been transformed into port cities, with obvious regional characteristics of ports and new competitive and cooperative relations in port development. This paper describes the regionalization characteristics of China's coastal container port system since 1985 from the aspects of scale structure and shipping network by using the rank-size rule and complex network model. The results show that: (1) The port system is becoming perfect and the scale structure is in a good order. The evolution of port system can be divided into three stages: low-level equilibrium, obvious centralization and relative decentralization. Container transport is forming regional agglomeration and intra-group diffusion around world-class hub ports. (2) The small-world characteristics of the port shipping network have been strengthened, and the network characteristics of different types of port routes have changed significantly. The hub port has declined in depth and the transfer function has been rising;The changes of large-scale ports are relatively complicated, more than half of the large-scale ports in the hinterland have obvious characteristics and weak transit function. Local ports are polarized, and most of the ports are diversified in the depth, breadth and radiation capacity of the route network. and a few of ports have shrunk in many ways. (3) The inherent characteristics of port regionalization are more evident in the logistics network with liner routes as the carrier. The hub-spoke characteristics of the network are strengthened, and the transport efficiency of the whole port network is greatly improved. From the perspective of the strongest connection of shipping network based on UCINET, the coastal container port network transformed from a structure of local networks coexisting with several ports pairs to a double-layer hub-spoke structure, which has upgrade the development of port linkage. Regional shipping network and port group have space dislocation rather than one-to-one correspondence.
