Survey on safety behaviors of elderly inpatients

Abstract:Objective To find out problems regarding safety behaviors of elderly inpatients,and to provide information for safety education for elderly patients.Methods Totally,106 elderly patients were surveyed by convenience sampling.Results Almost half(49.1%) patients fell at least once,and 26.4% of them had aspiration.The frequencies of preventive measures against 5 unsafe behaviors were distributed from "sometimes" to "always".Behaviors that prevented aspiration got the highest score and those prevented skin lesion got the lowest score.For the item "do not lock the door when taking shower",79.2% selected "always",which ranked the highest,and as for the item "ask nurses or caregivers to massage the red skin",5.7% selected "always",which ranked the lowest.Twenty-four patients(22.6%) were not familiar with safety knowledge,19 patients(17.9%) had not been told about safety knowledge,and 103 patients(97.2%)convinced that they needed safety knowledge.Patients mainly received safety knowledge from nurses,with the rate being 62.3%;67.0% of them expected to get safety knowledge from nurses.Conclusion Elderly patients′safety should be paid more attention to,some safety behaviors are done well and there is potential unsafe problems.Psychological interventions and education should be strengthened to reduce the occurrence of unsafe events.
