Abstract:Jerzy Grotowski (19.33-1999),a Polish theatre director and theorist,was widely respected as one of the most influential figures of experimental theatre and actors' training in the world in the latter half of the 20th century.Among his most enthusiastic admirers,supporters and followers are such renowned theatre directors as Peter Brook,Richard Schechner and Eugenio Barba.This interview with Maria Shevtsova,Chair Professor of Theatre Arts from University of London and a specialist on Grotowski,addresses some key issues in Grotowski studies,such as the political and historical contexts of his theatre career,his concepts of "poor theatre" and "art as vehicle," his cosmopolitan ethics,his indebtedness to the Oriental theatre and other different theatre and performance traditions,his influence on dramatists,actors and theatre directors,and his inspiring impact upon the theatre world today.

Abstract:Jerzy Grotowski (1933-1999, hereinafter referred to as Grotowski) was a renowned theater practitioner in the 20th century, dedicating his life to the study of theatrical performance. His theatrical works shook the world in the 20th century, and he was well-known in the theater communities of Europe and America. Unfortunately, he passed away prematurely, leaving behind profound and abstruse writings for future generations. His late-life creation, the Art of Vehicle in body action methods, holds profound significance for the study of states in various artistic performances. Based on this, researchers, drawing on Grotowskis lifelong learning and research background, interpret and analyze Grotowskis study of art of vehicle through the Zhuangzis concept of body in the philosophy of Swiss philosopher Jean Franois Billeters dynamic mechanism. This paper is based on the research theory of Professor Mingder Chung from Taipei National University of the Arts on Grotowskis MPA, aiming to elucidate Grotowskis interpretation of body through Zhuangzis body view, and further clarify the conceptual framework of MPA. The purpose is to contribute theoretical foundations to the study of Grotowskis Art of Vehicle.

Abstract:Throughout his career as a theatre director, Jerzy Grotowski encountered many different theatre cultures, which both collided with and were synthesized in his own practices. Confronted with Cold War mindsets and ideological constraints, Grotowski’s theatrical art reflects a kind of cosmopolitan spirit by embracing a common humanity. Analysing Grotowski’s biography alongside his theatrical innovations and theoretical thinking, this article aims to investigate the following three aspects of his theatrical cosmopolitanism: his encounters with different performance cultures in his theatrical concept of ‘poor theatre’, his advocacy of universal ethics in his representative theatrical productionAkropolis, and his belief in world citizenship reflected in his concept of ‘art as vehicle’ from the later years of his career. As a pioneer in the contemporary experimental theatre and performance, Grotowski travelled, lived and worked all over the world, transcending the geographical and ideological divide between the Socialist and the Capitalist blocs during the Cold War. The adverse social conditions of the time did not hinder his creativity, but rather instigated his unmatched artistic talent and his cosmopolitan spirit, both of which are deeply interconnected and integrated.

Abstract:Eugenio Barba's concept of “theatre anthropology” is a form of ideal theatre consisting not only of a theory of theatre but also a whole set of performance practices. Barba builds his system of theatre ideas on both the experience of the Odin Teatret and on the research conducted by the International School of Theatre Anthropology (ISTA). In his theoretical writings, he proposes Eurasiantheatre as an ideal. He formulates the concept of “preexpressivity” and its recurring principles of esthetics for performance, and the concept of “barter” which operates in the sociological dimension of theatre. Barter and preexpressivity are two vital concepts, which Barba uses to pursue a kind of universal theatre named Third Theatre—a type of theatre that attempts to move from culture to transculture.

Abstract:In the late twenties and early thirties of the twentieth century, when he ran the Guangdong Theatre Institute, Ouyang Yuqian promoted a “ Plebian Drama", which was comprised of the “Revolutionary Drama" and the “Artistic Drama". The central thesis of the movement was that only liberated art is pure art". Abstract:This essay offers strategies that can lead students to engage with Gao Xingjian and his plays of the 1980s through an analytical and creative learning experience. Student project design focuses on three plays that were publicly staged in China during the 1980s: Alarm Signal, The Bus Stop, and Wild Man. Reflecting on the challenges inherent in approaching Gao’s plays, I argue that students in North America require a pedagogy that foregrounds Gao’s conceptualization of theatre as an actor-centered, instead of script-centered, performing art. The essay concludes that leading students to a deeper understanding of how Gao composed “performance texts” – rather than “texts to be voiced” – is critical to their understanding of these plays as a key link in the chain of China’s drama and theatre history.

As a self-made specialist, his strength lies in his rich experience in practicing the art that is the subject of his study. His pays particular attention to performance and the "promiscuous" schools of traditional operas in his comprehensive studies, which seek to examine various elements of the art form. Abstract:This article presents the multifaceted persona of Tang Shu-wing, an acclaimed director, actor, and drama teacher, and examines his profound connections with the Polish theater tradition, particularly Jerzy Grotowski. The text also discusses Tang Shu-wing’s Shakespearean productions staged in Warsaw and Gdańsk. Marzenna Wiśniewska’s introduction contextualizes the appendix, which contains the edited transcript of a lecture delivered by Tang Shu-wing during the international online conference Contemporary Acting Techniques in Eurasian Theatre, Performance and Audiovisual Art: Intercultural and Intermedia Perspective (2021). In this lecture, the director characterizes the main ideas underlying his actor training and work on performances at the Tang Shu-wing Theatre Studio in Hong Kong. An essential part of the presentation is the characterization of Tang Shu-wing’s philosophy of art, including the four stages of an artist’s development and the methodology of authorial performance grounded in pre-verbal expression and body-based minimalist aesthetics.

Abstract:This chapter constructs a theory which will facilitate our investigations into alternative theatre’s potential for efficacy, both at the macro-level of the movement as a whole. It addresses a number of basic questions about the relationships between performers and audiences, between performance and its immediate context, and between performances and their location in cultural formations. Ideology has been described as a kind of cement which binds together the different components of the social order. It has also been likened to plaster, covering up the cracks and contradictions in society. The complexity that contextuality/inter-textuality engenders has driven some theoreticians of drama into a kind of critical reification which claims that only individual interpretations are ultimately possible. The idea of community as a process of ideological meaning-making helps to explain how individual performances might achieve efficacy for their audiences.

Abstract:If theatre historians had been paying attention to the proceedings at a Gilbert and Sullivan conference in Lawrence, Kansas in 1970, they would have heard a gauntlet strike the ground when Michael R. Booth delivered “Research Opportunities in Nineteenth-Century Drama and Theatre.” He called for research on audiences (“cultural levels, class origins, income, tastes, and development”), performance in the hinterlands (“we know that in 1866 60% of the theatre seats in metropolitan London were outside the West End”), economics (“theatre profits and losses, actors' wages, authors' income, management and organization, the pricing of seats”), and performance techniques (“technical developments in set construction, staging, lighting, traps, and special effects” as well as acting style). This cri de coeur to break the hegemony of literary teleologies is recognizable, in 2015, as a mandate to reorient inquiry toward how repertoires were delivered rather than how authorial talent was paramount, what buttressed profitability rather than what constituted fame, and who sustained a gamut of theatres rather than what demarcated elite taste. It set the agenda for aligning theatre studies in wholly new directions, and without citing a single source or calling out any particular historian it inventoried how theatre history could come into line with social history.

Abstract:Introduction. The article is devoted to the phenomenon of modern Chinese theater and aims to explore the ways of its evolution – from imitation of European avant-garde forms of theatrical art to the formation of an original artistic language. An important goal is also to identify the factors that have determined the unique aesthetic and meaningful characteristics of modern Chinese theater. Methodology and sources. As a result of the application of the comparative analysis method, the article compares the theatrical concepts of Ibsen, Stanislavsky and Brecht, which influenced the image of modern Chinese theater. Result and discussion. The special role of the European theatrical avant-garde is shown, namely, the concept of Brecht's dialectical drama, which became widespread in China at the end of the XX century. Over a twenty-year period (from 1959 to 1979), three so-called «Brecht booms» took place in China, radically transforming Chinese traditional theater. However, despite the high popularity of Brecht's ideas, the Chinese Theater did not turn into a literal translator of the European avant-garde, but formed its own artistic style based on traditional structures of audience perception. The key role in this process was played by the national cultural context – socio-political and mental – which determined the specific forms of adaptation of the cultural meanings of the European theater. The history of Chinese avant-garde theater lasts for more than forty years and began in the early 1980s. After experiencing a period of direct borrowing, Chinese theatrical figures came to rethink the European heritage in the context of their own culture. As a result, it was the middle path of Chinese theater development that turned out to be the most productive – a path that absorbed the outstanding artistic ideas of Stanislavsky and Brecht, the modern Western avant-garde, but also without rejecting traditional artistic principles. This is how Chinese theatrical culture has developed with its own unique style. Conclusion. The 20th century became the era of the interchange of Eastern and Western theatrical traditions, which largely shaped the world cultural landscape, in which the interaction of Brecht's theory and traditional Chinese culture forms a special topos.
World Drama and Intercultural Performance: Western Plays on the Contemporary Chinese Stage

Abstract:The circulation of world drama beyond its origin is to a large extent dependent on its intercultural performances, which are often done in unexpected forms for an indefinite body of audiences. In contemporary China, the adaptations and performances of Western plays have played an important role within and without theatre. In those intercultural adaptations, Western plays are translated, appropriated and staged by interweaving Chinese and Western performing cultures. So far, the adaptations of Western plays have brought about transformative effects on both the Western playwrights and Chinese theatre. Compared with the early ones, contemporary adaptations of Western plays have acquired some new characteristics. Firstly, there have appeared some international casts using different languages, as the audiences in the theatre are becoming bilingual or multilingual. Secondly, more and more Western plays are adapted into traditional Chinese theatrical forms, such as jingju, kunju, yueju, chuanju, quju, etc. One of the most obvious differences between traditional Chinese opera and spoken drama is that singing plays the leading role in the former. In some local opera performances, dialects are naturally used. Thirdly, certain individual plays have been frequently adapted and staged in different localities. The adaptations are often closely related to the political and cultural specificities in the local contexts. Despite the complexities in its global circulation and production, world drama gains in the intercultural process of adaptation, staging and viewing.

Abstract:The development of Chinese post-modern drama in 1990’s has revealed the young generation dramatists to be with an experimental gesture of rebellion and innovation. As a fundamental tendency, the young generation prefer the deconstruction of tradition and the rebellion of classics at the beginning of the 1990’s, As for the second half of the 1990’s, they mainly take the route of the mass culture and the left-wing politics. No doubt, Chinese post-modern drama actually enriches the probabilities of Chinese theatre art on one hand, but on the other hand, the urgent task for Chinese post-modern drama is to construct theatre aesthetics on the foundation of modernity from the point of view of “human theatre”.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to discuss the act of rethinking the theatrical play within an exhibition context. The framework of reference is that of the technologically-mediated scene, which places at its core the interaction between body, space and technology and which requires new methods for its analysis and development. This paper will analyse two case studies: the Digitalife 2017 exhibition in Rome, Italy and Dumb Type. Extra-Sensory Odissey, at the Centre Pompidou – Metz, France. These two examples represent potential strategies to exhibit and re-organise the technologically-mediated performance without one of the key elements of live performance: the presence of both audience and actors. We witness a change in the framework, moving from the idea of exhibition to that of environment (seen as an immersive space, built to reinforce the audience’s experience of perception). In the last part, I offer three coexisting dimensions to think about such environments in theatre: active design, expositional and educational dimensions.
