Abstract:The Tauroctony, commonly known as the bull-slaying cult can be regarded as the manifestation of the anima mundi, or the life-giving and taking energy (libido-thanatos) in the Jungian psychology. The symbolical significance of this cult is essential to see the totality of life in the natural circulation of the anima mundi. Artaud in Theatre and Its Double argues that the natural cycle of the unbridled energy has long been disrupted in the Western society since the Western civilization has cut the organic ties with the nature and has infected itself with the worn-out institutions in the grip of the poisonous, hegemonic language with its totalizing principles. He asserts that an uncontrollable plague has struck Europe due to the infection in the language. However, interestingly enough, he takes a positive stance towards the uncontrollable plague. He sees the potential procreation in the destructive power of this plague that would eventually melt the decomposed organs in the society. Thanks to this, the flattened body of the society cleansed of the rotten institutions will cure itself back to its original cycle. Artaud justifiably asserts that the plague best manifests itself in its double: In theatre. The corrosive effect of the language is best observed in the Western theatre. Artaud sees the plague as an opportunity to restore it back to its ritual roots. He develops a new form of theatre, “the Theatre of Cruelty” to cleanse the infected body of the Western society. In this context, this study aims to explore the cleansing mission of Artaud’s Theatre of Cruelty by corroborating the discussion with a detailed study on his notable play, Cenci.

Abstract:The 4th Shanghai International Drama Show 2007 is a festival for the small public,a festival of the tribe,symbolizing a kind of ritual experiment in drama.Plays by Richard Schechner:Hamlet:That's the Question,Educating the Wild,Two Woodsmen at Games,Yuan Ming Yuan(Gardens of Perfect Brightness),Rebounding of the Stock Market,The Scene of Daily Life at Qingming all serve as a kind of ritual.This article discusses their esthetic meaning from the perspectives of sex and identity,narration and mask.This drama show took place in such theaters as the small theater in Shanghai Drama Institute,New Space,Black Box,theater at Lianhua Road campus,Children Arts School's Flagger Theater,theater at the Drama Center.These theaters are all located in Huashan Road and Anfu Road,otherwise known as theater streets or drama space,or 'the space for the other' as Foucault put it.This article gives an interpretation of such space in view of space and city,space and stage.

Abstract:Eugenio Barba's concept of “theatre anthropology” is a form of ideal theatre consisting not only of a theory of theatre but also a whole set of performance practices. Barba builds his system of theatre ideas on both the experience of the Odin Teatret and on the research conducted by the International School of Theatre Anthropology (ISTA). In his theoretical writings, he proposes Eurasiantheatre as an ideal. He formulates the concept of “preexpressivity” and its recurring principles of esthetics for performance, and the concept of “barter” which operates in the sociological dimension of theatre. Barter and preexpressivity are two vital concepts, which Barba uses to pursue a kind of universal theatre named Third Theatre—a type of theatre that attempts to move from culture to transculture.

Abstract:Bertolt Brecht's theatrical aesthetics is not the one that scholars imagined.His theory of ″Verfremdungseffekt″(alienation effect)should be re-considered in two dimensions:defamilarization and detachment.His ″epic theatre″ should be viewed as narrative theatre and anti-mimic theatre.His theory of ″alienation effect″ and ″epic theatre″ has established the foundation for modern expressionism theatre.But his theory both relies on reason and appeals for social function in such a way as to be incompatible with the tradition of expressionism.His theory of detachment performance cannot simply be equated with expressionism theatre,and nor can his theory of experience theatre simply be done with anti-expressionism theatre.It is necessary to prevent the reductionism which reduces Brecht's theatrical aesthetics to ″expressionism theatre″,″social action theatre″ and ″back to Western tradition″.

Abstract:Since the 1960s scholars have challenged earlier assumptions concerning ritual and literature. They have seriously discredited both the “ritual theory of myth” and traditional ideas on the relation of ritual to Greek and medieval drama. Although some critics still subscribe to theories of psychoanalysis and the “Cambridge anthropological school,” current anthropology offers superior theories of ritual, particularly those of Victor Turner, with their emphasis on community. Because literature and rites have similar emotional effects we have tended to equate them, but by so doing we confuse the liminal with the “liminoid.” Modern authors influenced by Frazer often invite this comparison. Rene Girard's theories of scapegoat and civilization have provided a new, if controversial, turn to ritual criticism. Rites share their symbolic nature with art, but their peculiar satisfaction lies in the experience of community.

Abstract:In what sense can aesthetic experience be considered an opportunity for the development of personal identity, cognitive abilities, and emotions? Theatre proves to be an important field of investigation to approach this question. During a theatrical experience, the connection between fiction and reality can take the form of active cooperation between author, actor, and spectator. A better understanding of this point can be drawn by pointing out three kinds of spectator: we can distinguish a critical spectator, an emotional spectator, and an instinctual spectator, who respectively represent: the imaginative and hermeneutic attitude; empathy and fictional emotions; the unconscious satisfaction of drives. So far, a parallel can be established between literature and theatre. However, these two aesthetic experiences are profoundly different: the type of immersion provided by the theatrical experience differs from reading, because the presence of the characters is physical and actual. The pragmatic theatrical framework is the same as that which underlies childhood games. This means that the public too is to some extent called to play, i.e. to act. To appreciate the implications of this thesis, a preliminary analysis of the performance Reality (Deflorian and Tagliarini 2012) is offered, examining how its experience contributes to the development of the spectating subject.

Abstract:Poet and art critic David Antin observed that, to a great degree, video art derives significance from its relation to some aspect of television. This article acknowledges this and examines video art in the context of a cultural critique via a distinctive mixture of cross-disciplinary collaborations within the arts during the latter half of the twentieth century. While the video art Antin described can be considered an extension of the postwar recalibration of the emphasis placed on art as object, it was also the beneficiary of early twentieth-century experimentation, such as Dada’s challenge to notions of art and expectations regarding aesthetics, as well as early experimentation in cinema. This intersection of culture and art histories finds its way into the early video work of Daniel Boord. My main interest in Boord’s work is its relation to experimentation with theatricality, an area not usually associated with video art. Boord’s “lowbrow” absence of pretense and disregard for reductive formalism align well with Peter Brook’s conception of the “Rough Theatre,” as well as film critic Manny Farber’s notion of “termite art,” art that “feels its way through walls of particularization” and eats at its own boundaries. Boord’s work is a self-propelled dizzying array of humor, ideas, and juxtapositions that are well suited for the twentieth century—work that moves along according to its own self-defined boundaries of invention.
Theatre As ‘an Encounter’: Grotowski’s Cosmopolitanism in the Cold War Era

Abstract:Throughout his career as a theatre director, Jerzy Grotowski encountered many different theatre cultures, which both collided with and were synthesized in his own practices. Confronted with Cold War mindsets and ideological constraints, Grotowski’s theatrical art reflects a kind of cosmopolitan spirit by embracing a common humanity. Analysing Grotowski’s biography alongside his theatrical innovations and theoretical thinking, this article aims to investigate the following three aspects of his theatrical cosmopolitanism: his encounters with different performance cultures in his theatrical concept of ‘poor theatre’, his advocacy of universal ethics in his representative theatrical productionAkropolis, and his belief in world citizenship reflected in his concept of ‘art as vehicle’ from the later years of his career. As a pioneer in the contemporary experimental theatre and performance, Grotowski travelled, lived and worked all over the world, transcending the geographical and ideological divide between the Socialist and the Capitalist blocs during the Cold War. The adverse social conditions of the time did not hinder his creativity, but rather instigated his unmatched artistic talent and his cosmopolitan spirit, both of which are deeply interconnected and integrated.

Abstract:In the late twenties and early thirties of the twentieth century, when he ran the Guangdong Theatre Institute, Ouyang Yuqian promoted a “ Plebian Drama", which was comprised of the “Revolutionary Drama" and the “Artistic Drama". Abstract:The development of Chinese post-modern drama in 1990’s has revealed the young generation dramatists to be with an experimental gesture of rebellion and innovation. As a fundamental tendency, the young generation prefer the deconstruction of tradition and the rebellion of classics at the beginning of the 1990’s, As for the second half of the 1990’s, they mainly take the route of the mass culture and the left-wing politics. No doubt, Chinese post-modern drama actually enriches the probabilities of Chinese theatre art on one hand, but on the other hand, the urgent task for Chinese post-modern drama is to construct theatre aesthetics on the foundation of modernity from the point of view of “human theatre”.

Abstract:The article analyzes the characteristic features of organizing artistic time and space on the example of the plays "Rhinoceros" by E. Ionesco and "Tango" by S. Mrożek, which are traditionally considered classic examples of European theatre of the absurd. The basis of the nature of the theatre of the absurd is the destruction of the stage illusion, which manifests itself in various formal and content categories, among which the key role belongs to the chronotope. Common to the dramas of both authors is the space-time, which can mostly be characterized as conditional, undefined and without specific historical signs. Actors who function in such a chronotope are to a certain extent abstract, devoid of individual features. In the drama "Rhinoceros" time is outlined only cursorily in the remarks, which makes it impossible to determine a specific historical dimension and transports the viewer into a certain kind of conditional timelessness, emphasizing the universality of the idea. The artistic space, subject to the general logic of the plot, thickens with each action, shrinks from the size of the square of a provincial town to a room, and the main character, finding themself in a dead end, realizes their doom and the only possible need to fight for the preservation of their own human nature. In the drama "Tango" the mixing of time layers can be traced in an arbitrary way, which is additionally emphasized by a specific construction of space, the main feature of which is chaos. The first and second acts represent the living room of a solid residence of a Polish middle-class family of the early twentieth century, but all the interior elements are in complete disarray, which is a reflection of the anarchic views of the characters, permissiveness and leveling of traditions. In the third act, instead, we see the previous living room, in which order and coziness reign, but this very demonstratively ordered space contrasts sharply with the attempt to make death and violence an integral part of the ideology.

Abstract:Introduction. The article is devoted to the phenomenon of modern Chinese theater and aims to explore the ways of its evolution – from imitation of European avant-garde forms of theatrical art to the formation of an original artistic language. An important goal is also to identify the factors that have determined the unique aesthetic and meaningful characteristics of modern Chinese theater. Methodology and sources. As a result of the application of the comparative analysis method, the article compares the theatrical concepts of Ibsen, Stanislavsky and Brecht, which influenced the image of modern Chinese theater. Result and discussion. The special role of the European theatrical avant-garde is shown, namely, the concept of Brecht's dialectical drama, which became widespread in China at the end of the XX century. Over a twenty-year period (from 1959 to 1979), three so-called «Brecht booms» took place in China, radically transforming Chinese traditional theater. However, despite the high popularity of Brecht's ideas, the Chinese Theater did not turn into a literal translator of the European avant-garde, but formed its own artistic style based on traditional structures of audience perception. The key role in this process was played by the national cultural context – socio-political and mental – which determined the specific forms of adaptation of the cultural meanings of the European theater. The history of Chinese avant-garde theater lasts for more than forty years and began in the early 1980s. After experiencing a period of direct borrowing, Chinese theatrical figures came to rethink the European heritage in the context of their own culture. As a result, it was the middle path of Chinese theater development that turned out to be the most productive – a path that absorbed the outstanding artistic ideas of Stanislavsky and Brecht, the modern Western avant-garde, but also without rejecting traditional artistic principles. This is how Chinese theatrical culture has developed with its own unique style. Conclusion. The 20th century became the era of the interchange of Eastern and Western theatrical traditions, which largely shaped the world cultural landscape, in which the interaction of Brecht's theory and traditional Chinese culture forms a special topos.
"Living theatre, theatre of life"

Abstract:Young people love to play theatre--in one way or another. They like to play with behaviours, costumes, words, communication patterns, etc.; they like to disguise themselves, to create certain spheres and scenes of drama and tragedy, excitement and extacy, satire and irony, morals and decadence. Due to the particular uncertainties of the adolescent passage, youth oscillates between taking life both, too seriously and easy. Searching for identity and integration, they tend to experiment with styles of behaviour and culturally defined patterns of lifestyles conductive to well-being. Sometimes, life is perceived as pure entertainment, and sometimes as pure drama. It's living theatre and theatre of life. On the one hand it is "acting out", on the other hand it is playing precisely defined roles. And, in-between, it is always the question: Who am I? They tend to slip into roles in order to check out whether they are willing to accept their implications with regard to the priorities they have set so far.

Abstract:In 1551 England, Alice Arden cuckolded and then murdered Thomas Arden of Faversham, a prosperous, if unscrupulous, merchant and landlord, in their own home. Alice Arden was tried and convicted of murder, sentenced to die, and burnt at the stake. In the 1570s Holinshed chronicled the crimes and sentencing related to Thomas Arden's murder, and some twenty years later an anonymous playwright dramatized the events in a domestic tragedy called Arden of Faversham. Performed on the Elizabethan, and newly secular English stage in the wake of the Reformation, Arden of Faversham employs what I call the Corpus Christi affect, a phenomenon from the outlawed medieval theatre, to play a trick on its staring and startled audience. My focus is the play's spectacle--a poisoned crucifix, a painting that kills at a glance, a prayer book, shorn of its leaves--spectacle that insistently points at and exploits anxieties that motivate the iconophobes and the iconoclasts. I work with Andrew Sofer's account of semiotic and phenomenological attitudes towards stage properties in my analysis of Arden's props and the characters that handle them. I argue that while Alice's blasphemy, rebellion, and felony appear to be contained and condemned by her death sentence, the play stages its own subversive act by asserting the corpse of her husband as potentially salvific--the very means by which Alice performs her spiritual redemption.
