Abstract:It is widely believed that financial depth is conducive to economic growth. However such nexus is not explicitly found in China.Relative to FDIs,bank financing contributes little to China's economic growth. The bank loan allocated to state enterprises accounts for such breakage of this nexus. This sug- gests that the bank loan allocated to non-state enterprises should generally generate more growth. And the more the bank allocates loans to non-state sector, the faster local economy grows.Using a panel date cov- ering 29 provinces between 1987—2001,this paper evidences that growth of credit allocated to non-state enterprises has positive and significant effect on economic growth and TFPs controlling for other determi- nants of growth. This result also explains the regional disparity between the coast and inland provinces.
