Abstract:Magnetic nanomaterials showing unique magnetic behaviour have spread their potential applications in various fields. Iron oxide nanomaterials have been developed for their unique properties that they develop at extremely small size. The high surface area to volume ratio, enhanced surface properties, excellent magnetic property with better biocompatibility are the most promising properties of iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs). Hence development of bio-friendly and less toxic iron oxide NPs is the key point of research in recent years. Most importantly, unique physical and chemical properties of magnetite (Fe3O4), maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) and hematite (α-Fe2O3) are significantly important in the field of technological and biological applications. At nanoscale transition metal iron oxide develops superparamagnetism, which is very important and promising for biomedical applications. In the current study Magnetite (Fe3O4) phase of iron oxide has been prepared in the laboratory using the coprecipitation method. In this study less expensive and widely used experimental setup has been designed to observe the size effect in magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. The structural information was obtained using X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD result showed the presence of peaks corresponding to magnetite (Fe3O4) phase of iron oxide. The morphology of the particles was studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Magnetic properties were studied using vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Theoretical discussion on superparamagnetism has also been done.

Abstract:Monodisperse iron oxide nanoparticles were prepared by thermal decomposition of iron carbonyl in octyl ether in the presence of oleic acid. The particle size could be tuned from 7 nm to 25 nm. The dual role of oleic acid as a surfactant and a boiling-point elevating agent was discussed. The impacts of varied reflux conditions were investigated and a new monodisperse mechanism was given. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) were used to study the oxidation states of iron oxide nanoparticles. The evolution of d-spacing values in HRTEM images and SAED patterns demonstrated the transition from γ-Fe2O3 to Fe3O4 with the increasing particle size. Superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) were used to reveal the superparamagnetic behavior of as-synthesized nanoparticles. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Uniform magnetite, hematite, and goethite nanocrystals were prepared through an attractive method based on an oleic acid/alcohol/water system. By adjusting the synthetic parameters (base concentration, alcohol content, categories of alcohols, etc.), the controlled synthesis of uniform magnetite, hematite, and goethite nanocrystals can be easily achieved. Detailed investigations on the effect of the experimental parameters on the morphology of the final products and the phase transitions among the magnetite, hematite, and goethite phases were carried out. Finally, a method of doping other metal ions into magnetite was developed and the magnetic properties of magnetite doped with different metal elements were studied.

Abstract:Monodisperse Fe3O4 nanocrystals could be successfully synthesized in large quantities via a facile synthetic technique based on the pyrolysis of organometallic compound precursor in organic solvent by using oleic acid and oleylamine as capping ligands. The morphology and size of final products could be tuned by adjusting reaction parameters, such as molar ratio of OA:OAm, injection temperature, and kinds of surfactants. Abstract:New, non-hydrolytic routes to synthesize highly crystalline iron oxide nanocrystals (8-40 nm, magnetite) are described in this report whereby particle size and morphology were precisely controlled through reactant (precursor, e.g. (FeO(OH)) ratios, co-surfactant and organic additive, and/or reaction time. Particle size, with high monodispersivity (<10%), is demonstrated to be a function of precursor concentrations and through the addition of different cosurfactants and/or additives, cubic, octahedral, potato-like, and flower-like iron oxide nanocrystals can be reproducibly synthesized through simple one-pot thermal decomposition methods. High resolution transmission electron microscope, x-ray diffraction, and superconducting quantum interference device were used to characterize the size, structure and magnetic properties of the resulting nanocrystals. For aqueous applications, materials synthesized/purified in organic solvents are broadly water dispersible through a variety of phase (aqueous) transfer method(s).

Abstract:Monodisperse faceted and cubic magnetite nanoparticles were synthesized by the reduction of iron (III) acetylacetonate (Fe(acac)3) with N-methylpyrrole or pyrrole in the presence of the surfactants oleic acid and oleylamine in air. Particle size control can be attained by careful adjustment of the concentrations of the reactants and the surfactants. We also obtained monodisperse maghemite nanoparticles by the oxidation of the as-prepared Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The magnetic studies exhibit that increasing the size of iron oxides nanoparticles leads to the enhanced magnetic properties. In particular, the iron oxides nanoparticles with size more than 5 nm are soft ferromagnetic at room temperature.

Abstract:Monodispersed Fe3O4 magnetite nanoparticles were successfully synthesized via a simple solvothermal method, in which Fe(NO3)(3)center dot 9H(2)O was used as the starting materials, KOH as the mineralizer, and ethylene glycol (en) as the solvent. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) were employed to characterize the phase composition, transmission electron microscope (TEM) to observe the morphology and the particle size, and physical property measurement system (PPMS) to investigate the magnetic property of the synthesized powders, respectively. The synthesized Fe3O4 magnetite nanoparticles are of 50-100nm in size, and of notable ferromagnetic property. The saturation magnetization, remanent magnetization, and coercive field are 68.8emu.g(-1), 12.9emu.g(-1), 138.5Oe, respectively. Based on the experimental resuts, the formation mechanism and the well monodispersed reason of the solvothersized Fe3O4 nanoparticles are discussed.

Abstract:Monodisperse iron oxide nanoparticles with 5-20 nm can be synthesized by an inexpensive and simple ultrasonic-assisted method at low temperature. This is based on the decomposition of iron pentacarbonyl in cis-trans decalin. The high energy emitted by ultrasonic irradiation at a short time can promote the crystallization process simultaneously. At low temperature, these crystalline nucleuses can grow to monodisperse nanoparticles. Effects of ultrasonic treatment, the concentration of surfactant and the refluxing time on the size and size distribution of iron oxide nanoparticles were investigated. Abstract:Monodisperse iron oxide micro-, nanospindles and nanospheres with controlled sizes were synthesized through a facile solvothermal process. The products are characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, BET surface area measurements, scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The growth mechanism of spindle-like or spherical iron oxides with controlled size is discussed. Different content of Cl- in the reaction medium can also influence the nucleation rate through the decomposition of Fe8O8(OH)(8)Cl-1.35 and thus control the particle sizes. The as-prepared iron oxides exhibit size dependence in their physical properties such as UV-vis absorption spectra and IR spectra. In addition, the removal capacities of Cr(VI) of the as-prepared iron oxides are investigated. The better performances of the as-prepared iron oxides than commercial iron oxides could be attributed to the larger surface area and rough surface structure.

Abstract:Nanostructured iron oxides have been widely used in catalysis, adsorption, sensor, biomedicine, and so on. In this study, iron oxide nanoparticles containing nanosized cavities were prepared by hydrothermal treatment of a colloidal dispersion of iron hydroxide. The as-prepared sample and the one calcined in air at 450°C were composed of well-dispersed rhombohedral-like α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles; calcining in nitrogen resulted in a composite of α-Fe2O3 and γ-Fe2O3 having superparamagnetic property. Moreover, the iron oxide nanoparticles calcined in air or nitrogen have 7–15nm- and 5–12nm-diameter cavities, respectively. These peculiar structures might be conducive for some applications such as adsorption involving large molecules.

Abstract:As an important magnetic inorganic nanomaterial, iron oxide nanoparticles have exceptionally outstanding physical and chemical properties for bio-medicine and chemistry applications. Traditional Fe3O4 nanopowders normally have heavy aggregation problems, which may limit their applications. In this study, we made monodispersed Fe3O4 nanoparticles with an average size of 5-12 nm using a combination of oxidation-precipitation with solvothermal method. The Fe2+ in the reaction system can be partially oxidized to Fe3+ by the ambient air as an oxidizing agent, therefore, the precipitation process does not require nitrogen and other oxidants or reductants. The monodispersed Fe3O4 nanoparticles can be successfully modified and steadily dispersed in cyclohexane or n-hexane. The effects of different types of surfactants and alcohols, addition amount of surfactants and alkali, and ratio of ethanol-water solution were explored to obtain the optimum synthesis conditions. In addition, the different phase composition and morphology of final product can be simply adjusted using different addition amount of alkali to get Fe3O4, alpha-Fe3O4, gamma-Fe3O4 and alpha-FeOOH nanoparticles. We believe that the monodispersed Fe3O4 nanoparticles with a good dispersibility and magnetic response may have great application prospects in biological medicine, chemocatalysis and magnetic recording for future research.

Abstract:Thermal decomposition in solution is the most effective approach for achieving highly monodisperse iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs). However, a simple, economical, and environment-friendly iron precursor with high iron content remains in great demand. Although siderite (FeCO3) has been reported to produce iron oxide particles via calcination, it is difficult to control the shapes of the obtained particles compared to those obtained by solution methods. Herein, FeCO3 was employed as a precursor in solution thermal decomposition to prepare monodisperse IONPs and investigated the influence of reaction conditions on the particle size, including the concentration of oleic acid, concentration of the precursor, and the reaction temperature. The seed-mediated growth method with FeCO3 as a precursor was also studied to extend the scope of particle size. The experimental results demonstrate that high-quality IONPs can be synthesized in solution via FeCO3 thermal decomposition. The particle diameter was tuned between 3 and 20 nm by varying the reaction conditions, and by seed-mediated growth. FeCO3 is thus a readily available, economical, environment-friendly precursor with high iron content, which is a novel candidate for the synthesis of IONPs.

Abstract:Small size and mono-disperse Fe3O4 nanoparticles were prepared by co-precipitation in which FeSO4?7H2O and FeCl3?6H2O were used as raw materials and as precipitating agents. IR (IR), XRD (X-ray diffraction), and other means of the system were used to characterize the Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The results showed that the size of Fe3O4 nanoparticles was small and mono-disperse. At room temperature, the appropriate conditions on preparation of Fe3O4 nanoparticles were 0.5 mol/L FeCl3,0.2 mol/L NH3?H2O and Fe2 +∶Fe3+∶OH-=1.00∶1.00∶6.00 at 30 ℃. The size of Fe3O4 nanoparticles was 10～20 nm and the mono-dispersion was good. From XRD patterns, the Fe3O4 nanoparticles were face cubic crystal.

Abstract:The present study investigates the effect of different reaction times on the crystallinity, surface morphology and size of iron oxide nanoparticles. In this synthetic system, aqueous iron (III) nitrate (Fe(NO$_3$)$_3\cdot9$H$_2$O) nonahydrate, provided the iron source and triethylamine was the precipitant and alkaline agent. The as-synthesised iron oxide nanoparticles were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rietveld analysis, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Prolonged reaction times indicated the change on nanoparticle shape from elongated nanorods to finally distorted nanocubes. Analysis on the crystallinity of the iron oxide nanoparticles suggest that the samples mainly consist of two phases, which are Goethite ($\alpha$-FeOOH) and Hematite $(\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$), respectively.

Abstract:Monodisperse superparamagnetic SnO2-coated iron-oxide nanoparticles (similar to 16.4 nm) have been synthesized via thermal decomposition. The thickness of SnO2 shells can be controlled from 1-5 nm. As-prepared SnO2-coated iron-oxide nanoparticles with high saturation magnetization (18 A m(2)/kg), are stable up to 600 degrees C, which can be formed stable ferrofluid. It was suggested that the SnO2 shell acts as a barrier of preventing the growth of gamma-Fe2O3 and consequently, avoiding the gamma-Fe2O3-to-alpha-Fe2O3 phase transition at high temperatures.

Abstract:This work presents an efficient method of largely synthesizing octahedral magnetite nanoparticles. Without any surfactant, octahedral magnetite nanoparticles were successfully achieved by means of an oxidation-precipitation method with ferrous sulfate as starting material, which was pro rata oxidized to ferric salts by NaNO3 after alkalinizing with NaOH. XRD, TEM, SEM, ICP and VSM techniques were used to characterize the sample obtained by the above method. Experimental results indicate that the average size of particles is about 60-80 nm with a narrow size distribution and nanoparticles prepared show themselves in regular octahedral figures. The sample synthesized by the above method is in good crystalline state with good magnetic properties. (c) 2006 Published by Elsevier B.V.
Sonochemical synthesis of amorphous nanoscopic iron(III) oxide from Fe(acac)3

Abstract:Amorphous nanoscopic iron(III) oxide with interesting magnetic properties was prepared by sonolysis of Fe(acac)(3) under Ar in tetraglyme with a small amount of added water. The organics content and the surface area of the Fe(2)O(3) nanoparticles can be controlled with an amount of water in the reaction mixture and it increases from 48 m(2)g(-1) for dry solvent up to 260 m(2)g(-1) when wet Ar is employed. For further monitoring of the particle size and morphology and for the study of the surface, magnetic and thermal properties, the sample with 2 vol.% of H(2)O was chosen. SEM showed nanoscopic composite particles of a uniform size distribution and nearly spherical shapes with an estimated diameter of 20 nm. Such composites are built from amorphous iron(III) oxide nanoparticles (3 nm) embedded in an acetate matrix as proved by TEM and IR spectroscopy. Temperature-dependent Mössbauer spectra demonstrate a very narrow magnetic transition with an unusually low transition temperature around 25K reflecting the system of magnetically non-interacting ultrasmall particles with a narrow size distribution. The in-field (5T) Mössbauer spectrum recorded at 5K shows a minimum change compared to the zero-field spectrum indicating an absence of the long-range magnetic ordering. The composite particles are thermally stable up to 150 degrees C, which is confirmed by DSC, TG, and by the constant surface area. At higher temperatures, acetate groups are removed from the particle surface, which is documented by the increased surface area and disappearance of their IR bands.

Abstract:Magnetite nanoparticles(Fe3O4) were synthesized by the solvothermal method at 160℃,using FeCl3.6H2O and ethylene glycol as reactants.X-ray diffraction,field emission scanning electron microscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer were used to characterize the magnetite nanoparticles.The results indicated that the magnetite nanoparticles were of inverse spinel structure.The average particle sizes of 16 h and 24 h reaction were 145 nm and 495 nm respectively.The particles did not make any agglomeration.They showed outstanding monodisperse property.The influence of reaction time on the particle size of the products was studied.The saturation magnetization of reaction 24 h was 79.3 emu/g.The above particles showed excellent magnetic property.

Abstract:Monodisperse Fe3O4 nanoparticles were successfully synthesized through the thermal decomposition of iron acetylacetonate in octadecene solvent in the presence of oleic acid and oleylamine. The influences of experimental parameters, such as reacting temperature, amounts and kinds of surfactants, solvents, oleic acid and oleylamine, on the size and shape of monodisperse Fe3O4 nanoparticles were discussed. The phase structures, morphology, and size of the as-prepared products were investigated in detail by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Magnetic property was measured using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) at room temperature, which revealed that Fe3O4 nanoparticles were of ferromagnetism with a saturation magnetization (M-s) of 74.0 emu/g and coercivity (H-c) of 72.6 Oe.
