Abstract:Architects should consider the aesthetic experience of potential users when designing architectures. Previous studies have shown that subjective aesthetic judgment of architectures is influenced by structure features, and Western observers prefer structures that have curvilinear contours, high ceilings, and open space. The building styles, however, vary across cultures, and it remains unclear whether the preference for contours, ceiling height, and openness exist across cultures. To investigate this issue, this study analyzes the aesthetic judgment of Chinese observers, and the results demonstrate that Chinese observers also prefer high ceilings and open space. Preference for curvilinear contours, however, interacts with ceiling height and openness. Simple effect analysis reveals that Chinese observers prefer curvilinear contours only when the ceiling is low and the space is closed. In sum, these results suggest that preference for high ceilings and open space is robust for Chinese observers, but the preference for curvilinear contours is less reliable.

Abstract:This paper elaborates the development of spatial structure in our country.Because the forms and types are colorful and incessantly innovating,it is necessary to divide spatial structure by component elements.After the 21th century,the development of our nation’s spatial structure comes into a new period that the application range and fields for spatial structure extend continuously.Besides the large-span public buildings such as gymnasiums and airports,there are extensive and innovative applications including large-scale railway stations,stations awning without column,bridges and high-rise buildings for spatial structure.About the international cooperation,it is suggested to have an open mind and optimistic view towards the fact that that architecture scheme for our nation’s spatial structures are frequently led by foreign companies.China is already a country with a great deal of the top of the world spatial structures,thus it is our responsibility to strive to create even better and advanced spatial structures.Some issues which we should pay more attention are pointed out.

Abstract:The two museums, both are centers for contemporary ceramic art, designed in 2004 and 2006 respectively by LIU Ke-cheng in Fuping near the City of Xi'an, are two works of distinction.The architect was free enough to utilize some techniques peculiar to the region to impart a sort of Brutalist flavor to the main building of the museum, making it fairly distinctive from the other two museums LIU had made before.This reminds people of how Brutalism as an architectural school has originated and developed in the modern time, while at the same time arouses the question of what is the psoition of architectural design in contemporary China.

Abstract:Abstract In the developed countries of the world, the interests of society are increasingly becoming oriented towards acquaintance with the cultural characteristics that characterize the identity of a particular region. The result of interaction with national traditions, as components of culture is clearly demonstrated by architecture. In relation to China, its rich cultural heritage has become a source for creating unique modern museum structures. This paper analyzes a number of design solutions of museum constructions in the PRC, which clearly represent actual ways of rethinking of cultural traditions. Using the example of the Ningbo History Museum, the Xinjin Zhi Museum in Chengdu, the Folk-art galleries for China Academy of Arts and the Museum of Handcraft Paper, professional methods that determine architectural nature of museum structure are systematized. At the same time, they act as carriers of local features expressing “the spirit of the place”.

Abstract:The design of the contemporary courtyard is different from that of the traditional garden, but the practices based on the abstract relationships of the traditional garden represent a form of cultural continuity. The number of museum courtyard designs continues to rise in eastern China, which has outstanding traditional gardens and a rich historical culture. This paper aims to put forward the design strategies of museum courtyards of different sizes in eastern China. First, the basic data of 60 cases are collected from a wide range of sources and analysed statistically. Secondly, the design concepts and spatial organisation are examined in combination with field research, and thirdly, interviews with several architects are considered. Finally, this paper concludes that the traditional folk houses, villages and especially gardens in eastern China exert a profound influence on the design of the contemporary museum courtyard. The design of the museum courtyard reflects the response to the traditional context in three dimensions: spatial layout, spatial scale, and spatial sequence. This paper describes the specific design strategies of the museum courtyard as they echo the traditional context across settings of three different sizes: less than 5,000 m2, between 5,000–10,000 m2, and greater than 10,000 m2.

Abstract:With the progress of the times, Chinese education must enable students to understand that architecture is not only a tool for life, but also an artistic creation. Architectural aesthetics also involves historical, cultural, and social factors, as well as psychological health. To cultivate architects with good artistic cultivation, it is necessary to increase education in art, aesthetics, psychology, and humanities such as traditional architectural theory, Chinese traditional philosophy, Chinese and Western architectural aesthetics, aesthetic principles, Chinese and foreign art history, mental health, architectural geomantic omen, literature, calligraphy and painting appreciation, sculpture, photography, etc. In recent years, some art colleges in China, such as the Central Academy of Fine Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts of Shanghai University, have successively introduced the subject of architecture, which is a great experiment and makes up for the shortcomings of traditional engineering and architecture colleges that focus on technology and light art. In terms of architecture education, it is necessary to cultivate students' creative thinking and enhance their artistic cultivation, and closely unite architectural aesthetics with mental health. In this regard, we are continuously discussing teaching methods, summing up teaching experience, and introducing new ideas to keep pace with the times.

Abstract:Architecture and music have a potential to trigger similar psychological effects in people due to commonalities in artistic and structural properties. Current studies exploring the relationship between architecture and music have often focused on analyzing how music can inspire architectural design, but there have been a lack of studies exploring artistic and structural commonalities between architecture and music in such a context. Therefore, this study adopts semiotics and analogy as an interdisciplinary approach aiming to comprehensively investigate connections and commonalities between architecture and music, particularly in terms of design forms and organization patterns. Using the architecture of the Forbidden City, and the musical piece Palace Memories , as selected cases for this study, this research demonstrates how both of the cases' artistic forms can be translated into structural similarities in terms of both architecture and music. The results of this study reveal significant commonalities in forms and patterns across the fields of architecture and music for the selected cases. This study provides new perspectives for better understanding potential connections between the two fields, and how each may shed new light and provide surprising insights on the other.
