Abstract:Software outsourcing has become more and more popular in recent years,, and shows a non-reversible trend in the IT area. At the very beginning, the main purpose of software outsourcing is targeted in cost saving. But now it has turned into quality improvement and competence focus where software process will have crucial influence. This paper will analyze some experience of Indian software outsourcing industry, and present a new process for software outsourcing in China. The process is based on SITO Model and involves the Software Process Improvement (SPI). It has already been adopted in State Street Zhejiang University Technology Center (SSZUTC) as a proven record in process improvement.

Abstract:In this increasingly competitive business environment, firms utilise outsourcing as a strategic tool to leverage globally dispersed resources so that they may focus on their core competencies and improve efficiency. The more firms rely on outsourcing, the more they depend on their suppliers, and the more important it is to manage and develop suppliers in order to achieve and maximise the benefits of outsourcing. This paper explores the impact of supplier development on outsourcing performance. Structural equation modelling was used to analyse data collected from 213 manufacturing firms in China. The results indicate that supplier development has a strong direct positive impact on outsourcing performance, and that supplier development also leads to enhanced outsourcing performance through reducing outsourcing opportunism risk and improving outsourcing flexibility. In addition to making a contribution to current theories of outsourcing, our findings also provide outsourcing managers with practical understanding and insights about the role of supplier development in enhancing outsourcing performance.

Abstract:A key issue in supply chain design for manufacturing firms is how to make a trade-off between the degrees of vertical integration.This paper studies this issue by a single period supply chain model with one supplier and one manufacturer.For the manufacturer,all the components needed for building the final product are divided into two classes:core and non-core.For the non-core components,the manufacture can either in- vest in building its own production capacities so as to promote the ratio of backward integration,or rely on out- sourcing to an upstream supplier.The manufacture's optimal strategies on integration and outsourcing are first investigated,and then the impacts of such strategies on the performance of the manufacturer,the supplier and the whole supply chain system are analyzed.Finally several ways to improve and coordinate the supply chain are discussed.

Abstract:Previous research often regard outsourcing as a one-direction game led by multinational corporations (MNCs). This paper presents a new pattern of outsourcing and a new approach of learning referred to as reverse outsourcing. Firms in low-wage countries outsourcing to MNCs are becoming project owners. Why is such change occurring? What is the premise, and what are the conditions and mechanisms of this emergence? What is its significance for less-developed countries (LDCs) finns? Using the examples of one India telecom provider and two Chinese auto manufacturers, this paper describes the mechanism and motives of reverse outsourcing under a framework of game theory. This paper also presents an exploration of how LDC firms upgrade and divide such processes into three phases: learning, co-operation, and competition. By outsourcing to multinationals, LDC firms develop and eventually enter international markets. This indicates that reverse outsourcing is a feasible strategy for LDCs to upgrade, and for MNCs to gain profits and get access to new markets.

Abstract:This study aims to examine the mechanisms that connect manufacturers' long-term orientation toward suppliers to outsourcing performance. Using a data set collected from 244 manufacturing companies operating in China, this study tests several proposed hypotheses. The results of this study reveal that: 1) long-term orientation has a positive impact on the governance mechanism (i.e. both contractual and relational governance) and supplier development, subsequently enhancing outsourcing performance; 2) supplier development not only enhances outsourcing performance directly, but also does so indirectly by promoting both contractual and relational governance. This study contributes to current theory of outsourcing relationship management and further provides practical insights into the mechanisms that help manufacturers enhance outsourcing performance.

Abstract:There are a lot of research works as well as books written about SCM strategy, but few books are based on strategic theory of management in a pure sense. As a result, theories themselves are shallow and not in depth. In other words, SCM focuses on a strategic area of supply chain activities while, however, there are few books written on a basis of the theoretical or traditional articles of management strategy in a pure sense. The aims of this article are to review the theoretical strategy formulation concepts out of 50 books published in 2004 through 1990 while we had made logistics literature studies in the middle of 1995 with almost same approach and contributed to academic journals in Japan. This type of SCM literature study is a brand new research and the first attempt of research activity in Japan. As a survey result, it has made clear that most of books paid little attention to structural aspects of SCM strategy formulation as a state of art SCM model linked with management strategy theory. Therefore, we have reviewed the contents of SCM strategy written in fifty books and finally proposed our own SCM strategy structure and formulation based on strategic theories extracted from traditional international management theory as well as strategic theory of classical management.

Abstract:To solve the cost control problem of outsourcing procurement inherent in the complexness and difficulty for mathematical analysis, this paper established a simulation-based cost Optimization framework. Firstly, we adopted Poisson process to simulate multi-supplier outsourcing market environment, the procurement cost expectations objective function and constraints of the model was introduced. Secondly, taking decision strategy as feedback variables, procurement cost optimization model was proposed. Thirdly, several key technologies for algorithm implement were described. Finally, based on the history demand of an aircraft model factory, numerical simulation is carried out to show that this optimization model can effectively reduce the outsourcing procurement total cost and outsourcing parts inventory fluctuation.

Abstract:This chapter presents a generalised model for a manufacturer oriented Domestic Supply Chain (DSC) and International Supply Chain (ISC) based on two empirical case studies in China. The model considers some key characteristics such as uncertainties and constraints that are typical in the emerging economy in China. Various cost elements in association with supply chain activities are identified and used to measure the supply chain performance. Two supply chain management issues are discussed. The first is the integrated raw material procurement and finished goods production planning, and the second is the international market sales plan. A Simulation method is used to evaluate the model under specific strategies. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the usefulness of the model. We contribute to the literature in two aspects: (i) through two case studies of medium-sized manufacturers in China, the characteristics and differences between DSC and ISC can be better understood; (ii) a simulation tool is developed to evaluate specific management strategies and assist decision-making in various scenarios. Because of the limited number of case studies, the model is required to be validated in more companies and other industries.
The impact of supply chain strategy on supply chain transparency over the firm lifecycle: evidence from China

Abstract:Purpose In this study, the authors investigate whether supply chain (SC) strategies (lean or agile) improve or hinder the supply chain transparency (SCT) and what factors affect this relation. Design/methodology/approach The authors measure the level of SC strategy using natural language processing based on the annual financial reports of listed firms. Secondary data analysis is conducted on various databases encompassing 1,241 listed firms in China from 2011 to 2020. Additional tests are performed to assess the robustness of the results, and alternative explanations are duly considered. Findings The authors find that firms with an advanced level of SC strategy perform better on SCT. Furthermore, the authors observe that Agile SC strategy and Lean SC strategy have different effects on SCT over a firm's life cycle. Agile SC strategy (the ratio of the proportion of Agile SC strategy word frequency divided by the proportion of Lean SC strategy word frequency greater than 1) has a significantly positive effect on SCT in the maturity stage; Lean SC strategy (the ratio less than 1) has a positive effect on SCT in the growth and decline stages. An increase in online media coverage negatively moderates the impact of the SC strategy (frequency of Lean and Agile SC strategy-related keywords) on SCT in the maturity stage. An increase in government environmental subsidies positively moderates the impact of SC strategy on SCT in the maturity and decline stages. Additionally, an increase in industrial competition intensity positively moderates the impact of the SC strategy on SCT in the decline stage. Originality/value The authors' study contributes to the Operations and Supply Chain Management (OSCM) literature by revealing the positive impact of SC strategy on SCT with objective secondary data. Additionally, the authors examine the moderating effects of moderators over the lifecycle of a firm on this relationship in an emerging market context. The authors' findings offer valuable guidance to companies operating in diverse market environments, providing actionable insights to strengthen their SC strategies and enhance SCT.

Abstract:Economic globalization has swept the whole world. To focus on their main business, enterprises that are referred to as original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) outsource non-core production activities to contract manufacturers (CMs). By constructing a two-level supply chain consisting of two competing OEMs and one upstream CM, the strategic interaction of the OEMs between outsourcing and purchasing is studied. Specifically, the CM can offer custom- and predefined modes of original equipment manufacturing (namely, CO mode and PO mode, respectively). The former mode enables OEMs to determine product quality, while the latter only allows them to purchase from several quality configurations. The results show that, first, since the CO mode allows the adopter to lead the product design, whether to choose this mode depends on the required R&D cost. Interestingly, however, a lower R&D cost does not necessarily result in the adoption of the CO mode if the product quality difference is small under the PO mode. Second, the optimal purchasing strategy of an OEM is indifferent to the outsourcing mode (CO and PO) of its rival but significantly affected by the quality cost. However, compared to the PO mode, choosing the CO mode would cause the competitor to suffer more profit losses. Third, differing from the prior literature, this paper finds that when the downstream OEM can make quality decisions, although this may lead to profit loss of the contract manufacturer in some channels, it could benefit the CM overall.

Abstract:PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to present a research model and case illustrations that explore strategic outsourcing practices for sustainable competitive advantages in the Chinese context.Design/methodology/approachThis study is based on in‐depth interviews of executives of three multi‐national firms (MNCs) from Switzerland, Korea and the USA that have been successfully operating in China for more than seven years.FindingsThis paper discusses how three MNC firms in China maintain clear and disciplined strategic outsourcing and achieve desired business outcomes. They race to the top by managing strategic insourcing for high risk and high profit items while outsourcing low risk and high profit leveraging items.Originality/valueThe paper presents a strategic outsourcing model and case studies of three multi‐national firms in China, which suggest both theoretical and managerial implications showing how to implement successful outsourcing practices in the global market.

Self-organization is the theory that reveals how a system achieving to an orderly state, it can help to reveal the basic process of supply chain collaborative evolution efficiency. This article keeps Synergetics as the theoretical basis, it start from the perspective of the general system operation, systematically analyzed the basic principles and the general evolutionary process of self-organization, and creatively built a supply chain collaborative architecture model based on the specific operation mode of supply chain systems. Through this architecture model explained the three basic processes of the supply chain system how to achieve from disorder to order synergies by self-organization, and revealed the general principles of the supply chain through the process of self-organization evolution to achieve the synergy target.

Abstract:From the perspective of social networks and core competencies,this paper reveals the dynamic evolution of routine and innovative R&D outsourcing based on the enterprises’ growth stage: initial enterprise,development and maturity.Through 206 samples of single factor analysis of variance(ANOVA),LSD and Tamhane T2 test,the results show that from initial,development to maturity,the dominant position of efficient R&D outsourcing decreased,while the dominant position of innovative R&D outsourcing gradually,which provides good suggestion and advice for R&D outsourcing implementation and decision-making.

Abstract:From the perspective of consumer utility, this paper sets up a Multi-Agent-based model of a supply chain network consisting of consumers, manufacturers and suppliers. And then, it analyzes the outsourcing strategies of manufacturers with heterogeneous consumers. Results show that manufacturers should take different production strategies with heterogeneous consumers, the manufacturer should produce the higher quality of component in-house and sell with higher price when the consumption value of the consumer is higher;otherwise, the manufacturer should outsource. The manufacturer should out-source and sell with the higher price when the diversity of consumers is large; otherwise, the manufacturer should produce the component in-house and offer lower selling prices.

Abstract:Reverse outsourcing,a new trend that originated in Indian services firms,is emerging in developing countries.This paper attempts to summarize a generalized concept of reverse outsourcing and built a model based on its mechanisms and preconditions.In this paper reverse outsourcing is defined as a phenomenon of off-shoring led by developing countries who are project owners.By an endogenous outsourcing model,we show that reverse outsourcing is a new strategy to gather global innovation resources and is helpful for domestic firms to upgrade.

Abstract:In this paper, a review of supply chain optimization models is presented. Firstly, the concept of a supply chain is introduced, and relevant issues are discussed. Then the supply chain optimization models, including queueing theoretic models, game theoretic models, network flow models, and option valuation models, are studied. In particular, some typical mixed integer programming (MIP) models are analyzed. A framework of the supply chain optimization model is presented, too. And the relevant factors of the supply chain are discussed. Finally, the future studies in this area, e.g., supply chain re-engineering and optimizing, are explored.
