Abstract:We introduce a deformed topological vertex and use it to define deformations of the topological string partition functions of some local Calabi-Yau geometries. We also work out some examples for which such deformations satisfy a deformed Gopakumar-Vafa integrality and can be identified with the equivariant indices of some naturally defined bundles on the framed moduli spaces.

Abstract:We want to discuss various applications of modular forms in topology. The starting point is elliptic genus and its generalizations. The main techniques are the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, the Atiyah-Bott-Segal-Singer Lefschetz fixed point formula, Kac-Moody Lie algebras, modular forms and theta-functions. Just as the representations theory of classical Lie groups has close connections with the Atiyah-Singer index formula as exposed in [A1], the representation theory of loop groups plays very important role in our study. One of the most important new features of loop group representations is the modular invariance of the Kac-Weyl character formula, which allows us to derive many interesting new results and to unify many important old results in topology. In this paper we will develope along this line. We hope that the other features of loop group representations, such as fusion rules and tensor category structure may also be applied to topology. See the discussions in §3. The contents of this paper is organized in the following way. In §1 we introduce elliptic genus by combining index theory and the representation theory of loop groups. The relation of the classical index theory with representation theory of classical Lie groups was discussed in [A1]. Here one finds that just replacing the classical Lie groups by their corresponding loop groups, we get the complete theory of elliptic genus, or more generally the index theory on loop space. Especially the Dirac operator and the Witten genus of loop space are derived more convincingly in this way. Then all of the other well-known properties of elliptic genus, such as functional equations, characterizations by rigidity and fibrations, can be easily obtained. Here we only pick some less well-known results to discuss, for example the expressions of the parameters in elliptic genera in terms of theta-functions. Different from the classical Lie group case, a new feature in our situation appears, the modular invariance which, by combining with index theory, is applied to obtain many new topological results. This is the content of §2. Most results in this section are special cases of more general results. For simplicity we only give the main ideas of the proofs. We make some geometric constructions in §3 to understand elliptic cohomology. The construction in §3.3 is motivated by the vertex operator algebra construction of the monstrous moonshine module. Abstract:In this paper we propose a definition of torsion refined Gopakumar–Vafa (GV) invariants for Calabi–Yau threefolds with terminal nodal singularities that do not admit Kähler crepant resolutions. Physically, the refinement takes into account the charge of five-dimensional BPS states under a discrete gauge symmetry in M-theory. We propose a mathematical definition of the invariants in terms of the geometry of all non-Kähler crepant resolutions taken together. The invariants are encoded in the A-model topological string partition functions associated to non-commutative (nc) resolutions of the Calabi–Yau. Our main example will be a singular degeneration of the generic Calabi–Yau double cover of and leads to an enumerative interpretation of the topological string partition function of a hybrid Landau–Ginzburg model. Our results generalize a recent physical proposal made in the context of torus fibered Calabi–Yau manifolds by one of the authors and clarify the associated enumerative geometry.

The tropological vertex

Abstract:The theory of the topological vertex was originally proposed by Aganagic, Klemm, Mariño and Vafa as a means to calculate open Gromov-Witten invariants of toric Calabi-Yau threefolds. In this paper, we place the topological vertex within the context of relative Gromov-Witten invariants of log Calabi-Yau manifolds and describe how these invariants can be effectively computed via a gluing formula for the enumeration of tropical curves in a singular integral affine space. This richer context allows us to prove that the topological vertex possesses certain tropical symmetries. These symmetries are captured by the action of a quantum torus Lie algebra that is related to a quantisation of the Lie algebra of the tropical vertex group of Gross, Pandharipande and Siebert. Finally, we demonstrate how this algebra of symmetries leads to an explicit description of the topological vertex and related Gromov-Witten invariants.

From quantum curves to topological string partition functions II

Abstract:We propose a geometric characterisation of the topological string partition functions associated to the local Calabi-Yau (CY) manifolds used in the geometric engineering of $d=4$, $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric field theories of class $\mathcal{S}$. A quantisation of these CY manifolds defines differential operators called quantum curves. The partition functions are extracted from the isomonodromic tau-functions associated to the quantum curves by expansions of generalised theta series type. It turns out that the partition functions are in one-to-one correspondence with preferred coordinates on the moduli spaces of quantum curves defined using the Exact WKB method. The coordinates defined in this way jump across certain loci in the moduli space. The changes of normalisation of the tau-functions associated to these jumps define a natural line bundle playing a key role in the geometric characterisation of the topological string partition functions proposed here.

Abstract:A bstract We make a proposal for calculating refined Gopakumar-Vafa numbers (GVN) on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds based on refined holomorphic anomaly equations. The key examples are smooth elliptic fibrations over (almost) Fano surfaces. We include a detailed review of existing mathematical methods towards defining and calculating the (unrefined) Gopakumar-Vafa invariants (GVI) and the GVNs on compact Calabi-Yau 3-folds using moduli of stable sheaves, in a language that should be accessible to physicists. In particular, we discuss the dependence of the GVNs on the complex structure moduli and on the choice of an orientation. We calculate the GVNs in many instances and compare the B-model predictions with the geometric calculations. We also derive the modular anomaly equations from the holomorphic anomaly equations by analyzing the quasi-modular properties of the propagators. We speculate about the physical relevance of the mathematical choices that can be made for the orientation.

Non-perturbative topological strings from resurgence

Abstract:The partition function of topological string theory on any family of Calabi-Yau threefolds is defined perturbatively as an asymptotic series in the topological string coupling and encodes, in a holomorphic limit, higher genus Gromov-Witten as well as Gopakumar-Vafa invariants. We prove that the partition function of topological strings of any CY in this limit can be written as a product, where each factor is given by the partition function of the resolved conifold with shifted arguments, raised to the power of certain sheaf invariants. We use this result to put forward an expression for the non-perturbative topological string partition function in this limit, as a product over analytic functions in the topological string coupling which correspond to the Borel sums for the resolved conifold found previously. The non-perturbative corrections to the partition function are identified with Stokes jumps of a Borel summation. They depend only on genus zero GV invariants and can be expressed entirely in terms of a single function which is introduced as a deformation of the prepotential.

Abstract:The Gromov-Witten invariants of $ {\mathbb{C}}^3 $ with branes is encoded in the topological vertex which has a very complicated combinatorial expression. A simple formula for the topological vertex was proposed by Aganagic et al. in the fermionic picture. We will propose a similar formula for the framed topological vertex and prove it in the case when there are one or two branes.

Abstract:The topological string captures certain superstring amplitudes which are also encoded in the underlying string effective action. However, unlike the topological string free energy, the effective action that comprises higher-order derivative couplings is not defined in terms of duality covariant variables. This puzzle is resolved in the context of real special geometry by introducing the so-called Hesse potential, which is defined in terms of duality covariant variables and is related by a Legendre transformation to the function that encodes the effective action. It is demonstrated that the Hesse potential contains a unique subsector that possesses all the characteristic properties of a topological string free energy. Genus $g\leq3$ contributions are constructed explicitly for a general class of effective actions associated with a special-Kähler target space and are shown to satisfy the holomorphic anomaly equation of perturbative type-II topological string theory. This identification of a topological string free energy from an effective action is primarily based on conceptual arguments and does not involve any of its more specific properties. It is fully consistent with known results. A general theorem is presented that captures some characteristic features of the equivalence, which demonstrates at the same time that non-holomorphic deformations of special geometry can be dealt with consistently.

Abstract:We present an orbifold topological vertex formalism for PT invariants of toric Calabi-Yau 3-orbifolds with transverse $A_{n-1}$ singularities. We give a proof of the orbifold DT/PT Calabi-Yau topological vertex correspondence. As an application, we derive an explicit formula for the PT $\mathbb{Z}_{n}$-vertex in terms of loop Schur functions and prove the multi-regular orbifold DT/PT correspondence.

Abstract:We compute partition functions of the deformed multiple M5-branes theory on $K3\times T^2$ using the refined topological vertex formalism and the Borcherds lift. The deformation is related to the mass deformation in the corresponding four dimensional $N=4$ $SU(N)$ gauge theory on $K3$. The seed of the Borcherd-lift is calculated by taking the universal part of the type IIb little string free energy of the CY3-fold $X_{N,1}$. We provide explicit modular covariant expressions, as expansions in the mass parameter $m$, of the genus two Siegel modular forms produced by the Borcherds lift of the first few seed functions. We also discuss the relation between genus-one free energy and Ray-Singer Torsion, and the automorphic properties of the latter.

Abstract:One may construct a large class of Calabi-Yau varieties by taking anticanonical hypersurfaces in toric varieties obtained from reflexive polytopes. If the intersection of a reflexive polytope with a hyperplane through the origin yields a lower-dimensional reflexive polytope, then the corresponding Calabi-Yau varieties are fibered by lower-dimensional Calabi-Yau varieties. A top generalizes the idea of splitting a reflexive polytope into two pieces. In contrast to the classification of reflexive polytopes, there are infinite families of equivalence classes of tops. Tops may be used to describe either fibrations or degenerations of Calabi-Yau varieties. We give a simple combinatorial condition on tops which produces semistable degenerations of K3 surfaces, and, when appropriate smoothness conditions are met, semistable degenerations of Calabi-Yau threefolds. Our method is constructive: given a fixed reflexive polytope which will lie on the boundary of the top, we describe an algorithm for constructing tops which yields semistable degenerations of the corresponding hypersurfaces. The properties of each degeneration may be computed directly from the combinatorial structure of the top.

Abstract:This is the abstract prepared for Workshop on Topology and Geometry (Zhang jiang, China, October 1994), and is a review of my recent works. What kinds of combinations of singularities can appear in small deformation fibers of a fixed singularity? We consider this problem for hypersurface singularities on complex analytic spaces of dimension 2. For all singularities in the beginning par t of Arnold's classification list, the answer to this problem is given by a unique principle described by Dynkin graphs. Abstract:In the light of $\phi$-mapping method and topological current theory, the topological structure and the topological quantization of arbitrary dimensional topological defects are obtained under the condition that the Jacobian $J(\phi/v) \neq 0$. When $J(\phi/v)=0$, it is shown that there exist the crucial case of branch process. Based on the implicit function theorem and the Taylor expansion, we detail the bifurcation of generalized topological current and find different directions of the bifurcation. The arbitrary dimensional topological defects are found splitting or merging at the degenerate point of field function $\vec \phi$ but the total charge of the topological defects is still unchanged.

Abstract:We provide a rigorous perturbative quantization of the B-twisted topological sigma model via a first order quantum field theory on derived mapping space in the formal neighborhood of constant maps. We prove that the first Chern class of the target manifold is the obstruction to the quantization via Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism. When the first Chern class vanishes, i.e. on Calabi-Yau manifolds, the factorization algebra of observables gives rise to the expected topological correlation functions in the B-model. We explain a twisting procedure to generalize to the Landau-Ginzburg case, and show that the resulting topological correlations coincide with Vafa's residue formula.

Abstract:By exploiting new mathematical relations between Pandharipande-Thomas (PT) invariants, closely related to Gopakumar-Vafa (GV) invariants, and rank 0 Donaldson-Thomas (DT) invariants counting D4-D2-D0 BPS bound states, we rigorously compute the first few terms in the generating series of Abelian D4-D2-D0 indices for compact one-parameter Calabi-Yau threefolds of hypergeometric type. In all cases where GV invariants can be computed to sufficiently high genus, we find striking confirmation that the generating series is modular, and predict infinite series of Abelian D4-D2-D0 indices. Conversely, we use these results to provide new constraints for the direct integration method, which allows to compute GV invariants (and therefore the topological string partition function) to higher genus than hitherto possible. The triangle of relations between GV/PT/DT invariants is powered by a new explicit formula relating PT and rank 0 DT invariants, which is proven in an Appendix by the second named author. As a corollary, we obtain rigorous Castelnuovo-type bounds for PT and GV invariants for CY threefolds with Picard rank one.

Zig-zag deformations of toric quiver gauge theories. Part I: reflexive polytopes

Abstract:We study one-parameter families of $U(1)^2$ preserving deformations relating pairs of toric quiver gauge theories on D-branes probing local toric (pseudo) del Pezzo surfaces. The superpotential deformations are defined by zig-zag paths in the brane tiling and are non-trivial in the chiral ring if the geometry has a non-isolated singularity. In the dual $(p,q)$ web, the deformation is realized as a Hanany-Witten move that reverses a semi-infinite fivebrane. We use these deformations to find RG flows between 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs on D3-branes probing local toric (pseudo) del Pezzo surfaces of the same degree, and briefly comment on the interpretation for BPS quivers of rank one 5d SCFTs on $S^1$.

On deformation quantization of the space of connections on a two manifold and Chern Simons Gauge Theory

Abstract:We use recent progress on Chern-Simons gauge theory in three dimensions [18] to give explicit, closed form formulas for the star product on some functions on the affine space ${\mathcal A}(\Sigma)$ of (smooth) connections on the trivialized principal $G$-bundle on a compact, oriented two manifold $\Sigma.$ These formulas give a close relation between knot invariants, such as the Kauffman bracket polynomial, and the Jones and HOMFLY polynomials, arising in Chern Simons gauge theory, and deformation quantization of ${\mathcal A}(\Sigma).$ This relation echoes the relation between the manifold invariants of Witten [20] and Reshetikhin-Turaev [16] and {\em geometric} quantization of this space (or its symplectic quotient by the action of the gauge group). In our case this relation arises from explicit algebraic formulas arising from the (mathematically well-defined) functional integrals of [18].
