Abstract:Asymmetric cyanation of a class of easily available olefins with a favorable cyanide source ethyl cyanoformate (CNCOOEt) was realized by an interesting modular catalyst. Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) derived from biomass is a versatile platform chemical for producing various degradable polymers, especially polyethylene 2,5-furandicarbox-ylate (PEF). To reduce the high cost of feedstock, fructose instead of expensive 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was used as the feedstock for producing FDCA in the acetic acid (HOAc) solvent by a one-pot, two-step method. Fructose was first catalytically converted into HMF and 5-acetoxymethylfurfural (AMF) in HOAc over the Amberlyst-15 catalyst. After the separation of only Amberlyst-15, the in situ-formed HMF and AMF were further catalytically oxidized to FDCA by air (oxygen) over homogeneous Co/Mn/Br catalysts following the free-radical chain reaction mechanism. HOAc was not only used as the solvent for the dehydration and following oxidation process but also served as the effective co-catalyst for the dehydration of fructose. The effects of catalyst species, dosage, and reaction temperature on the dehydration process and oxidation temperature on FDCA yield and purity were evaluated systematically. Under the optimized reaction conditions, a total yield of HMF and AMF of 50% and a final FDCA yield of 35% were achieved. Combined with experimental results and theoretical calculation, the reaction mechanism for fructose dehydration side reactions and the HMF and AMF oxidation reactions was proposed correspondingly. The proposed two-step, one-pot method using fructose as the starting material is a promising route for the commercial production of FDCA with the simple operation and viable yield.

Abstract:Since the introduction of the Shi catalyst, the organocatalytic epoxidation of olefins has become an area of continued research interest. To explore the possibility to enhance the efficiency and stability of the catalyst, the synthesis of a galactose‐derived trifluoromethyl ketone, and its use for stereoselective epoxidation reaction that exploits a transitory dioxirane as active species are herein reported. The trifluoromethyl ketone was built on the C6 of a protected D‐galactopyranose. The organocatalyst was obtained smoothly in a few steps, and when utilized for stereoselective epoxidation exhibited excellent stability as no chemical alterations were observed during the reaction. The stereoselectivity, although sometimes moderate, appears surprisingly high considering the conformational freedom of the trifluoromethyl ketone moiety. DFT calculations were performed to investigate the interactions involved in regulating the observed selectivities. Moreover, a new mnemonic model has been developed to serve as a fast‐predicting tool for epoxidation of new substrates.

Abstract:A novel heterogeneous strong acid catalyst was synthesized through the copolymerization of p -toluenesulfonic acid and paraformaldehyde and utilized for the synthesis of fructone. The results showed that the catalyst was very efficient for the reaction with the yield over 95%. The advantages of extremely high density of acidity, high thermal and chemical stability, low cost for the simple synthetic procedure, and reusability made the catalyst one of the best choices for the reaction.

Abstract:By using a D-fructose-derived chiral ketone or a D-mannitol-derived chiral amine as catalyst, the organocatalytic asymmetric epoxidation of cis-1-propenylphosphoric acid with 30% aqueous hydrogen peroxide in H(2)O-CH(3)CN mixture (similar to 80:20) afforded (1R, 2S)-(-)-(1,2)-epoxypropyl phosphoric acid (fosfomycin). Abstract:Catalytic processes are important components of sustainable chemistry. We present a novel process to synthesize crotonic acid by sequential catalytic oxidation-condensation-oxidation reactions in a Soxhlet extractor. Oxidation of ethanol and crotonaldehyde is catalyzed by a new composite Cu/H3PO4 catalyst characterized by XRD (X-ray Diffraction), BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis), TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy), XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometry), and TG (Thermogravimetric analysis), showing higher activity and better stability compared to nano-copper, due to dispersion by a mutual support; external temperature compensation during the reaction allows ethanol oxidation without degradation of the catalyst. XRD and XPS analyses of the used catalyst reveal that monovalent copper is the active species for ethanol oxidation. The catalyst is effectively recovered and reused four times. Nano MgO catalyzes acetaldehyde condensation under mild conditions and can be recycled during the process. Conversion of ethanol is greater than 48%, and the selectivity to crotonic acid is 84% in the continuous process.

This review addresses the most significant advances in asymmetric epoxidation of alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones using proline-derived alpha,alpha-diarylprolinols as catalysts. Special attention has been paid to the enantioselective epoxidation of chalcones, alpha,beta-unsaturated trifluoromethyl, trichloromethyl ketones and beta,gamma-unsaturated alpha-keto esters based on the reseach of our group.

Abstract:A mild synthesis of 1,3-diaryl-2,3-epoxypropanones via the Cu(0)/selectfluor system-catalyzed epoxidation of chalcone compounds has been achieved using water as the oxygen source. The optimized reaction conditions were established through systematic investigations of the effect of catalyst precursors, oxidants and their dosages, and solvents on the reaction conditions. A variety of chalcones with different substituted patterns can undergo the epoxidation smoothly and furnish products with high yields of up to 92%.

Abstract:A new sulfur-functionalized chiral ionic liquid has been developed for the epoxidation reaction of aromatic aldehydes with benzyl bromide in water, furnishing desired trans-epoxides with excellent diastereoselectivity and enantioselectivity up to 72% ee. The organocatalyst could be easily reused for five times without remarkable decrease in yields and enantioselectivities.

Abstract:A new chrial organosulfide was synthesized through an unexpected Wagner-Meerwein rearrangement. This organosulfide could catalyze the epoxidation reaction of various aromatic aldehydes smoothly with benzyl bromide to give trans-diaryl epoxide in satisfactory yields (60-84%) with excellent diastereoselectivities (trans:cis = 95:5-100:0) and good to excellent enantioselectivities (86-96% ee).

Abstract:A range of ferrocenyl sulfides are synthesized and screened. Among them 1-α-methysulphoferrocenyl ethyl acetate and 1-α-methysulphoferrocenyl alcohol are found to be unexpected catalysts, which is first reported mediating in sulfur ylide epoxidation reactions, furnishing a novel approach for highly stereoselective synthesis of oxiranes with 98%≈100%trans-isomer. The protocol also has excellent yield, convenient workup and recycled starting material. The reason of hightrans-selectivity is due to the bulky ferrocenyl sulfide group, which stabilizes the intermediates and determines the trans priority. A possible catalytic mechanism is also proposed.

Abstract:A novel K2S2O8-promoted decarboxylative cross coupling of alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic acids with cyclic ethers was developed under aerobic conditions. The present protocol, which includes C-C and C=0 bond formation in one step through addition, oxidation, and decarboxylation processes, leads to the desired ketone products in moderate to excellent yields. In addition, mechanism studies showed that the transformation process undergoes a radical pathway via a direct ether.

Abstract:A FeCl3·6H2O-catalyzed synthesis of β-ketothioesters from the hydrolysis reaction of chain α-oxoketene dithioacetals was carried out. Subsequently, we explored the FeCl3·6H2O-catalyzed Friedel-Crafts alkylation of the synthesized β-ketothioesters with alcohols in CH3CN at 25 °C, affording the desired α-alkylated β-ketothioesters in excellent yields. Wide scope of the substrates, use of inexpensive reagents, high yields under mild reaction conditions are notable features of these reactions.

Abstract:A highly efficient protocol was developed for the synthesis of fructone spice from the ketalization of ethyl acetoacetate with ethylene glycol utilizing the sulfonated polydivinylbenzene (PDVB-SO 3 H) solid acid catalyst. A comparative analysis revealed that PDVB-SO 3 H exhibited better catalytic activity and reusability than conventional H 2 SO 4 and p -toluene sulfonic acid. The impact of reaction conditions, including temperature, reaction time, catalyst dosage, and molar ratio of reactants, was extensively investigated in order to optimize the reaction parameters. The results revealed the remarkable catalytic efficiency of PDVB-SO 3 H in synthesizing apple ester flavor, achieving a conversion rate exceeding 99% under reflux conditions with a ketone to alcohol ratio of 1.5. Furthermore, PDVB-SO 3 H solid acid demonstrated its versatility by enhancing the synthesis of a variety of fruit ketone flavors with high conversion rates. Notably, the catalyst displayed excellent recyclability, remaining active for up to six cycles without any noticeable decline in performance. Therefore, PDVB-SO 3 H solid acid exhibits immense potential for utilization in the chemical industry.
