Abstract:A series of heterogeneous catalysts with Cr as an active component is prepared by an innovative in situ coprecipitation method. The prepared Cr/SiO2catalyst has high catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability in the conversion of cyclohexane into ketone-alcohol oil using H2O2as the oxidant under mild conditions, resulting in 54.59% cyclohexane conversion and 90.01% ketone-alcohol oil selectivity. The physical and chemical properties of the prepared materials are studied by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis (BET). The excellent performance of the Cr/SiO2-400 catalyst is due to the increase of low-valence chromium species and the intimate interaction between SiO2and CrOx. In addition, the catalyst was easy to separate and maintained good catalytic activity even after four runs.
Oxidant‐Controlled Catalytic Transformations of Phenols with Unexpected Cleavage of Aromatic Rings

Abstract:Oxidative transformations of phenols have attracted significant attention of chemists due to their importance in biological process and organic synthesis. In contrast to the relatively well-developed oxygenation and coupling reactions of phenols, the highly efficient and selective oxidative ring cleavage of phenols is under-represented. This work describes a novel CuCl-catalyzed tandem homocoupling/skeletal rearrangement of phenols that realizes the cleavage of the phenol ring by using air or Ag2CO3 as the oxidant. Interestingly, simply changing the oxidant to K2S2O8 results in the oxidative coupling/cyclization of phenols to give dibenzofurans. These results set an important precedent of oxidant-controlled catalytic transformations of phenols.

Abstract:A cobalt-catalyzed selective dioxygenation of styrenes with N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) was developed using molecular oxygen as the terminal oxidant. Alcohol and ketone products can be selectively formed from identical substrates by catalyst control. The reaction was applicable to a broad range of styrenes and exhibited good functional group tolerance. It provided a method for preparation of 1,2-diol or α-hydroxyketone derivatives.

Abstract:Dual catalyst-controlled intramolecular unactivated C(sp(3))-H amination and oxygenation of carbamates merging visible-light photocatalysis and earth-abundant transition metal catalysis have been reported. Useful amino alcohol and diol derivatives could be selectively obtained from readily available tertiary alcohol derivatives. The possible mechanisms have been proposed via a 1,5-HAT process followed by Lewis acid-controlled cyclization. The nickel and zinc catalysts inhibit the formation of oxygenation and amination products, respectively. An interesting phenomenon of chirality transfer is also observed.

Abstract:The attractive challenge in green chemistry is exploring novel heterogeneous catalyst system for catalyst-controlled product selectivity for oxidation of olefins. Hence, we proposed efficient and green catalytic methods for the selective synthesis of aldehydes and ketones, the selectivity of the reaction is exclusively dependent on the metals from the catalyst. A series of novel glycosyl pyridyl triazole-platinum (GPT-Pt) complex have been successfully synthesized and fully characterized for the first time. The GPT-Pt catalysts have been applied in the selective oxidative cleavage of alkenes to yield the corresponding aldehydes in the presence of H2O2 as an oxidant in water. With GPT-Pd as the catalyst, the oxidation reaction give the ketones as the main products. Moreover, the catalysts were recovered and reused six times without significant yield decrease. Novel glycosyl pyridyl triazole-platinum (GPT-Pt) complex have been successfully synthesized.The selective synthesis of aldehydes or ketones is exclusively dependent on the metals from the catalyst. Moreover, the catalysts can be separated and reused at least six times with superior activity.

Abstract:A copper/cobalt-catalyzed difunctionalization of alkenes with sulfonylazides and tert-butyl hydroperoxide has been achieved. This protocol provides an efficient and direct oxysulfonylation approach to β-ketosulfones and β-sulfonyl peroxides in moderate to good yields under mild conditions. Abstract:A novel protocol to access vinyl sulfones and internal/terminal olefins via cobalt‐catalyzed acceptorless dehydrogenation coupling (ADC) has been established. This system enables the divergent synthesis of three kinds of olefin compounds through the coupling of alcohols and sulfones under oxidant‐free conditions. The broad applicability of this procedure is demonstrated by over forty olefin products, including pharmaceutical‐related compounds and complex substrates, in a one‐pot process. Preliminary mechanistic studies were conducted, and a proposed reaction pathway was presented.

Abstract:A new methodology for the monovalent copper-initiated direct coupling of alkanes and hydroperoxides with unsaturated carbonyl compounds is developed. In this work, alpha, beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds underwent alkylation and peroxidation to give synthetically useful a-peroxy ketones with wide functional group tolerance. The resulting alpha-peroxy ketones could be easily transformed into very useful a-hydroxy ketones.

Abstract:A general and facile approach for the direct oxidative α-acyloxylation of ketones using molecular oxygen as the oxidant is developed. This method avoids the use of excessive peroxides and expensive metal catalysts, affording a variety of α-acyloxylated ketones in satisfactory yields. Experimental studies indicate that the reaction proceeds via a radical pathway. Additionally, α-hydroxy ketones could be obtained by changing the solvent.

Abstract:Excellent and unique diastereoselectivity is observed in the iridium-catalyzed deoxygenation of tertiary cyclohexanols and cyclopentanols. The substituent effect on the diastereoselectivity and detailed control models are analyzed case by case, using tertiary monocyclic and polycyclic cyclohexanols, bicyclic bridged cycloalkanols, and cyclopentanols as the model substrates. The selectivity is decided by the steric environment of the carbocation intermediates and is independent of the catalyst loading. Stereoelectronically, the iridium hydride approaches the carbocation in directions perpendicular to the carbocation plane. The sterically large iridium hydride delivers its hydride in the sterically least hindered direction to the carbocation. The deoxygenation has found important applications in the stereospecific arylations of sterically complex compounds. Our deoxygenation is stereochemically very different from the coupling reactions and can be used to specifically synthesize stereoisomers that are not available via cross-couplings.

Abstract:Carboxylic acids and alcohols are widely commercially available, structurally diverse, benchtop stable, and ubiquitous in both natural products and pharmaceutical agents, making them to be ideal coupling partners for organic synthesis. Though various transformations have been developed by enabling the activation and subsequent cross-coupling of carboxylic acids and alcohols in separate context, the direct coupling of these two structural motifs to build value-added molecules is rare. Herein, we developed a direct deoxygenative cross-coupling between carboxylic acids and alcohols for dialkyl ketone synthesis via photoredox/nickel dual catalysis. This protocol provides a powerful platform to construct a wide range of structurally diverse ketone scaffolds with broad substrate scope, good functional group tolerance, step-economy and mild reaction conditions, using simple and readily available substrates. Moreover, the large-scale synthesis and late-stage functionalization of biological molecules also demonstrate the potential practicality.

Abstract:Chemical reactions that directly convert carbon-hydrogen (C–H) bonds to carbon-oxygen (C–O) bonds provide a powerful means to rapidly synthesize valuable organic compounds. However, achieving multiple C–H bond oxygenation reactions at the same time is challenging, particularly because of the risk of overoxidation. Here, we report the selective oxygenation of two or three contiguous C–H bonds, enabling the conversion of simple alkylarenes to diols, triols, or their corresponding acetates. The reactions are achieved using electrophotocatalysis—a process that utilizes both light and electricity to activate a single catalyst—to promote the oxidation reactions. The rapid increase in molecular complexity achieved by these multiple oxygenations enables the synthesis of some compounds of pharmaceutical interest by dramatically shorter sequences than previously achieved.

Abstract:The direct conversion of alcohols into long-chain alkanes is an attractive but extremely challenging approach for biomass upgrading. Here, we describe the highly selective deoxygenative coupling of aryl ethanols with primary alcohols to produce alkanes, using a bis-N-heterocyclic carbene iridium (bisNHC-Ir) complex as the catalyst. Up to quantitative yields and selectivity with a broad substrate scope are attained in both homoand cross-coupling reactions. Mechanistic studies reveal that the further synergistic hydrogenation of the alkene intermediates by the formate generated in situ in the presence of bis-NHC-Ir is crucial for alkane production.

Abstract:A novel K2S2O8-promoted decarboxylative cross coupling of alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic acids with cyclic ethers was developed under aerobic conditions. The present protocol, which includes C-C and C=0 bond formation in one step through addition, oxidation, and decarboxylation processes, leads to the desired ketone products in moderate to excellent yields. In addition, mechanism studies showed that the transformation process undergoes a radical pathway via a direct ether.

Abstract:A dioxygen-triggered oxosulfonylation/sulfonylation of unactivated olefins to achieve β-keto sulfones/sulfones has been developed. Interestingly, pluralistic mechanisms were found when different types of compounds were applied as substrates, and different products were achieved. The reaction is carried out with a high atomic efficiency in the absence of a metal and a catalyst at room temperature under an air atmosphere. Abstract:The challenging synthesis of thermodynamic-unfavored cis-olefins through catalytic cross-coupling reactions requires the synergistic interaction of substrate-activating units and configuration-regulating catalysts. Successfully hitting these two birds with one stone, we herein develop a convenient photoredox access to Z-alkenes from alkynes and light alkanes with a bifunctional iron-catalyzed system possessing both C(sp3)−H activation and configuration-controlling abilities. The protocol exhibits 100% atom utilization, mild conditions, a broad substrate scope, and compatibility with multitudinous functional groups. The detailed reaction mechanism and the origin of geometry regulation are well investigated by experimental and computational studies. Progressively, a catalytic amount of diaryl disulfides is introduced for consecutive photoinduced Z−E isomerization via reversible radical addition and flipping. Big steric hindrance substituents assembled on the disulfide emerge necessity for suppressing double-bond migration. This tandem strategy paves a promising way for stereoselective alkene construction and will bring significant inspiration for the development of transition metal photocatalysis. Abstract:A novel, efficient transition-metal-free and controllable boration/protodeboronation strategy has been developed for the chemoselective conjugate addition and 1,4-reduction of alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds. Without any metal-catalyst or base, a series of beta-boration products of alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds was easily obtained in moderate to excellent yields in a mixed solvent of ethanol and water. The presence of a catalytic amount of Cs2CO3 can effectively induce further protodeboronation reaction towards 1,4-reduction products at higher reaction temperature. Therefore, by slightly changing the reaction conditions, the boration or reduction products of alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds can be controllably obtained. Mechanistic studies revealed that Cs2CO3 played the key role in activating the protodeboronation step. This transition-metal-catalyst-free and product controllable method provides a useful and eco-friendly tool for the highly chemoselective preparation of the beta-boration products and 1,4-reduction products of alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds.

Abstract:Chemodivergent (de)hydrogenative coupling of primary and secondary alcohols is achieved utilizing an inexpensive nickel catalyst, (6‐OH‐bpy)NiCl2. This protocol demonstrates the synthesis of branched carbonyl compounds, α,α‐disubstituted ketones, and α‐substituted chalcones via borrowing hydrogen strategy and acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling, respectively. A wide range of aryl‐based secondary alcohols are coupled with various primary alcohols in this tandem dehydrogenation/hydrogenation reaction. The nickel catalyst, along with KOtBu or K2CO3, governed the selectivity for the formation of branched saturated ketones or chalcones. A preliminary mechanistic investigation confirms the reversible dehydrogenation of alcohols to carbonyls via metal‐ligand cooperation (MLC) and the involvement of radical intermediates during the reaction.

Abstract:The FeCl3 -catalyzed aerobic oxidation of ketones always gives rise to the α-C-C cleavage product, having challenges to afford hydroxyl keto compounds. Here we report an effective control of the main product from keto acid to α-hydroxyl ketone, by reducing the concentration of FeCl3 catalyst, together with the use of DMSO as the solvent. In addition, mechanistic investigations suggested the same FeCl3 -coordinated peroxide intermediate for both hydroxylation and C-C cleavage routes, and emphasize the role of DMSO as both ligand and reductant. This work provides a new approach for selective aerobic oxidation under Lewis acid catalysis.
