Abstract:Kawakubo and Uchida showed that, if a closed oriented 4k-dimensional manifold M admits a semi-free circle action such that the dimension of the fixed point set is less than 2k, then the signature of M vanishes. In this note, by using G-signature theorem and the rigidity of the signature operator, we generalize this result to more general circle actions. Combining the same idea with the remarkable Witten-Taubes-Bott rigidity theorem, we explore more vanishing results on spin manifolds admitting such circle actions. Our results are closely related to some earlier results of Conner-Floyd, Landweber-Stong and Hirzebruch-Slodowy.
On Positive Scalar Curvature and Moduli of Curves

Abstract:In this article we first show that any finite cover of the moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with $g\geq 2$ does not admit any Riemannian metric $ds^2$ of nonnegative scalar curvature such that $ds^2 \succ ds_{T}^2$ where $ds_{T}^2$ is the Teichm\"uller metric. Our second result is the proof that any cover $M$ of the moduli space $\mathbb{M}_{g}$ of a closed Riemann surface $S_{g}$ does not admit any complete Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature in the quasi-isometry class of the Teichm\"uller metric, which implies a conjecture of Farb-Weinberger.
The genus spectrum of a hyperbolic 3-manifold

Abstract:In this article we study the spectrum of totally geodesic surfaces of a finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifold. We show that for arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds that contain a totally geodesic surface, this spectrum determines the commensurability class. In addition, we show that any finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifold has many pairs of non-isometric finite covers with identical spectra. Forgetting multiplicities, we can also construct pairs where the volume ratio is unbounded.

Residual finiteness of some automorphism groups of high dimensional manifolds

Abstract:We show that for a smooth, closed 2-connected manifold $M$ of dimension $d \geq 6$, the topological mapping class group $\pi_0 \mathrm{Homeo}(M)$ is residually finite, in contrast to the situation for the smooth mapping class group $\pi_0 \mathrm{Diff}(M)$. Combined with a result of Sullivan, this implies that $\pi_0 \mathrm{Homeo}(M)$ is an arithmetic group. The proof uses embedding calculus, and is of independent interest: we show that the $T_k$-mapping class group, $\pi_0 T_k \mathrm{Diff}(M)$, is residually finite, for all $k \in \mathbb{N}$. The statement on the topological mapping class group is then deduced from the Weiss fibre sequence, convergence of the embedding calculus tower and smoothing theory.

Non-existence of circle actions on oriented manifolds with three fixed points except in dimensions 4, 8 and 16

Abstract:Let $M$ be a smooth $4k$-dimensional orientable closed manifold, and assume that $M$ has at most two non-zero Pontrjagin numbers which are associated to the top dimensional Pontrjagin class and the square of the middle dimensional Pontrjagin class. We prove that the signature of $M$ being equal to $1$ and the $\hat{A}$-genus of $M$ vanishing cannot hold at the same time except $\dim M=8, 16$. As an application, we claim that the dimensions of oriented $S^1$-manifolds with exactly three fixed points are only $4, 8$ and $16$, and the rational projective plane whose dimension is greater than $16$ has no smooth non-trivial $S^1$-action.

Abstract:Browning and Vishe used the Hardy-Littlewood circle method to show the moduli space of rational curves on smooth hypersurfaces of low degree is irreducible and of the expected dimension. We reinterpret the circle method geometrically and prove a generalization for higher genus smooth projective curves. In particular, we explain how the geometry of numbers can be understood via the Beauville-Laszlo theorem in terms of vector bundles on curves and their slopes, allowing us to prove a higher genus variant of Davenport's shrinking lemma. As a corollary, we apply this result to show the Fujita invariant of any proper subvariety of a smooth hypersurface of low degree is less than 1.

Signature of the Milnor fiber of parametrized surfaces

Abstract:We compute the signature of the Milnor fiber of certain type of non-isolated complex surface singularities, namely, images of finitely determined holomorphic germs. An explicit formula is given in algebraic terms. As a corollary we show that the signature of the Milnor fiber is a topological invariant for these singularities. The proof combines complex analytic and smooth topological techniques. The main tools are Thom-Mather theory of map germs and the Ekholm-Szűcs-Takase-Saeki formula for immersions. We give a table with many examples for which the signature is computed using our formula.

Abstract:Let X be a normal complex algebraic variety, and p a prime. We show that there exists an integer N=N(X, p) such that: any non-trivial, irreducible representation of the fundamental group of X, which arises from geometry, must be non-trivial mod p^N. The proof involves an analysis of the action of the Galois group of a finitely generated field on the etale fundamental group of X. We also prove many arithmetic statements about fundamental groups which are of independent interest, and give several applications.

Abstract:In this paper we confirm a folklore conjecture which suggests that for a complete noncompact manifold $M$ of finite volume with sectional curvature $-1 \leq K \leq 0$, if the universal cover of $M$ is a visibility manifold, then the fundamental group of each end of $M$ is almost nilpotent.

Abstract:In this article, we prove that the fundamental group $\pi_1(M)$ of a complete open manifold $M$ with nonnegative Ricci curvature is finitely generated, under the condition that the Riemannian universal cover $\tilde M$ satisfies an "almost $k$-polar at infinity" condition. Additionally, such $\pi_1(M)$ is virtually abelian. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the base point of any tangent cone at infinity of such a manifold is nearly a pole. In the case where $\tilde M$ exhibits almost maximal Euclidean volume growth, we prove that $M$ deformation retracts to a closed submanifold $F$ which is diffeomorphic to a flat manifold, provided $M$ is not simply connected.

Perverse sheaves on varieties with large fundamental groups

Abstract:We conjecture that any perverse sheaf on a compact aspherical Kähler manifold has non-negative Euler characteristic. This extends the Singer-Hopf conjecture in the Kähler setting. We verify the stronger conjecture when the manifold X has non-positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. We also show that the conjecture holds when X is projective and in possession of a faithful semi-simple rigid local system. The first result is proved by expressing the Euler characteristic as an intersection number involving the characteristic cycle, and then using the curvature conditions to deduce non-negativity. For the second result, we have that the local system underlies a complex variation of Hodge structure. We then deduce the desired inequality from the curvature properties of the image of the period map.

Abstract:Let (X, g) be a compact Riemannian manifold with quasi-positive Riemannian scalar curvature. If there exists a complex structure J compatible with g, then the Kodaira dimension of (X, J) is equal to $$-\infty $$ and the canonical bundle $$K_X$$ is not pseudo-effective. We also introduce the complex Yamabe number $$\lambda _c(X)$$ for compact complex manifold X, and show that if $$\lambda _c(X)$$ is greater than 0, then $$\kappa (X)$$ is equal to $$-\infty $$; moreover, if X is also spin, then the Hirzebruch A-hat genus $${{\widehat{A}}}(X)$$ is zero.

Abstract:We prove that for n>4 there is no compact arithmetic hyperbolic n-manifold whose Euler characteristic has absolute value equal to 2. In particular, this shows the nonexistence of arithmetically defined hyperbolic rational homology n-sphere with n even different than 4.

Abstract:In 1983, Hartle and Hawking introduced a conceptually intriguing idea involving signature-type change, which led to the no-boundary proposal for the initial conditions of the universe. According to this proposal, the universe has no beginning because there is no singularity or boundary in spacetime; however, there is an origin of time. Mathematically, this entails signature-type changing manifolds where a Riemannian region smoothly transitions to a Lorentzian region at the surface where time begins. We present a coherent framework for signature-type changing manifolds characterized by a degenerate yet smooth metric. We then adapt firmly established Lorentzian tools and results to the signature-type changing scenario, introducing new definitions that carry unforeseen causal implications. A noteworthy consequence is the presence of locally closed time-reversing loops through each point on the hypersurface. By imposing the constraint of global hyperbolicity on the Lorentzian region, we demonstrate that for every point $p\in M$, there exists a pseudo-timelike loop with point of self-intersection $p$. Or put another way, there always exists a closed pseudo-timelike path in $M$ around which the direction of time reverses, and a consistent designation of future-directed and past-directed vectors cannot be defined.

Rigidity of elliptic genera for non-spin manifolds

Abstract:We discuss the rigidity of elliptic genera for non-spin manifolds $M$ with $S^1$-action. We show that if the universal covering of $M$ is spin, then the universal elliptic genus of $M$ is rigid. Moreover, we show that there is no condition which only depends on $\pi_2(M)$ that guarantees the rigidity in the case that the universal covering of $M$ is non-spin.

Abstract:Let $M$ be an open (complete and non-compact) manifold with $\mathrm{Ric}\ge 0$ and escape rate not $1/2$. It is known that under these conditions, the fundamental group $\pi_1(M)$ has a finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent subgroup $\mathcal{N}$ of finite index, as long as $\pi_1(M)$ is an infinite group. We show that the nilpotency step of $\mathcal{N}$ must be reflected in the asymptotic geometry of the universal cover $\widetilde{M}$, in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of an isometric $\mathbb{R}$-orbit: there exist an asymptotic cone $(Y,y)$ of $\widetilde{M}$ and a closed $\mathbb{R}$-subgroup $L$ of the isometry group of $Y$ such that its orbit $Ly$ has Hausdorff dimension at least the nilpotency step of $\mathcal{N}$. This resolves a question raised by Wei and the author.
