Abstract:The approximation classes of modules that arise as components of cotorsion pairs are tied up by Salce's duality. Here we consider general approximation classes of modules and investigate possibilities of dualization in dependence on closure properties of these classes. While some proofs are easily dualized, other dualizations require large cardinal principles, and some fail in ZFC, with counterexamples provided by classes of -projective modules over non-perfect rings. For example, we show that the statement "each covering class of modules closed under homomorphic images is of the form for a module M " is equivalent to Vopěnka's Principle.

Abstract:We systematically investigate the functors between sites which induce morphisms of relative toposes. In particualar, we establish a relative version of Diaconescu's theorem, characterizing the relative geometric morphisms towards a relative sheaf topos in terms of a notion of flat (equivalently, filtered) functor relative to the base topos.

Relative tilting theory in abelian categories I: Auslander-Buchweitz-Reiten approximations theory in subcategories and cotorsion pairs

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a special kind of relative (co)resolutions associated to a pair of classes of objects in an abelian category $\mathcal{C}.$ We will see that, by studying these relative (co)resolutions, we get a possible generalization of a part of the Auslander-Buchweitz approximation theory that is useful for developing $n$-$\mathcal{X}$-tilting theory in [4]. With this goal, new concepts as $\mathcal{X}$-complete and $\mathcal{X}$-hereditary pairs are introduced as a generalization of complete and hereditary cotorsion pairs. These pairs appear in a natural way in the study of the category of representations of a quiver in an abelian category [5]. Our main results will include an existence theorem for relative approximations, among other results related with closure properties of relative (co)resolution classes and relative homological dimensions which are essential in the development of $n$-$\mathcal{X}$-tilting theory in [4].

Abstract:Let $\mathscr{A}$ be a small abelian category. For a closed subbifunctor $F$ of $\Ext_{\mathscr{A}}^{1}(-,-)$, Buan has generalized the construction of the Verdier's quotient category to get a relative derived category, where he localized with respect to $F$-acyclic complexes. In this paper, the homological properties of relative derived categories are discussed, and the relation with derived categories is given. For Artin algebras, using relatively derived categories, we give a relative version on derived equivalences induced by $F$-tilting complexes. We discuss the relationships between relative homological dimensions and relative derived equivalences.

Abstract:Auslander and Buchweitz have proved that every finitely generated module over a Cohen-Macaulay (CM) ring with a dualizing module admits a so-called maximal CM approximation. In terms of relative homological algebra, this means that every finitely generated module has a special maximal CM precover. In this paper, we prove the existence of special maximal CM preenvelopes and, in the case where the ground ring is henselian, of maximal CM envelopes. We also characterize the rings over which every finitely generated module has a maximal CM envelope with the unique lifting property. Finally, we show that cosyzygies with respect to the class of maximal CM modules must eventually be maximal CM, and we compute some examples.

Abstract:Abstract Approximation sequences and derived equivalences occur frequently in the research of mutation of tilting objects in representation theory, algebraic geometry and noncommutative geometry. In this paper, we introduce symmetric approximation sequences in additive categories and weakly n -angulated categories which include (higher) Auslander-Reiten sequences (triangles) and mutation sequences in algebra and geometry, and show that such sequences always give rise to derived equivalences between the quotient rings of endomorphism rings of objects in the sequences modulo some ghost and coghost ideals.

Abstract:\emph{Approximation Theory} uses nicely-behaved subcategories to understand entire categories, just as projective modules are used to approximate arbitrary modules in classical homological algebra. We use set-theoretic \emph{elementary submodel arguments} to give new, short proofs of well-known theorems in approximation theory, sometimes with stronger results.

Abstract:We compare relative cohomology theories arising from using different proper resolutions of modules. Criteria for the vanishing of such distinctions are given in certain cases, and we show that this is related to the generalized Tate cohomology theory. We also demonstrate that the two balance properties admitted by the two different cohomology theories are actually equivalent in some cases. As applications, we recover many results obtained earlier in various contexts. At last we investigate derived functors with respect to the Auslander and Bass classes.

Abstract:Extriangulated categories were introduced by Nakaoka and Palu as asimultaneous generalization of exact categories and triangulated categories. Inthis paper, we introduce and develop an analogous theory of Auslander-Buchweitzapproximations for extriangulated categories. Abstract:We introduce the notion of a quasi DG category, generalizing that of a DG category. To a quasi DG category satisfying certain additional conditions, we associate another quasi DG category, the quasi DG category of $C$-diagrams. We then show the homotopy category of the quasi DG category of $C$-diagrams has the structure of a triangulated category. This procedure is then applied to produce a triangulated category of mixed motives over a base variety.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a finite tensor category, and let $\mathcal{M}$ be an exact left $\mathcal{C}$-module category. The relative Serre functor of $\mathcal{M}$ is an endofunctor $\mathbb{S}$ on $\mathcal{M}$ together with a natural isomorphism $\underline{\mathrm{Hom}}(M, N)^* \cong \underline{\mathrm{Hom}}(N, \mathbb{S}(M))$ for $M, N \in \mathcal{M}$, where $\underline{\mathrm{Hom}}$ is the internal Hom functor of $\mathcal{M}$. In this paper, we discuss the case where $\mathcal{C}$ and $\mathcal{M}$ are the category of modules over a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra $H$ and the category of modules over an $H$-comodule algebra $L$, respectively. We give an explicit description of the relative Serre functor of $\mathcal{M}$ and its twisted module structure in terms of the Frobenius structure of $L$. We also study pivotal structures on $\mathcal{M}$ and give some concrete examples.

Abstract:Motivated by an equivalence of categories established by Kapranov and Schechtman, we introduce, for each non-negative integer d, the category of connected bialgebras modulo d+1. We show that these categories fit into an inverse system of categories whose inverse limit category is equivalent to the category of connected bialgebras. In addition, we extend the notion of approximation of connected bialgebras to those that are not necessarily generated in degree 1 and show that, for connected bialgebras in the category of Yetter-Drinfeld modules over a Hopf algebra, approximation is compatible with cocycle twisting.

Abstract:Under certain conditions, Koszul complexes can be used to calculate relative Betti diagrams of vector space-valued functors indexed by a poset, without the explicit computation of global minimal relative resolutions. In relative homological algebra of such functors, free functors are replaced by an arbitrary family of functors. Relative Betti diagrams encode the multiplicities of these functors in minimal relative resolutions. In this article we provide conditions under which grading the chosen family of functors leads to explicit Koszul complexes whose homology dimensions are the relative Betti diagrams, thus giving a scheme for the computation of these numerical descriptors.

Approximation properties for dynamical W*-correspondences

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{G}$ be a locally compact quantum group, and $A,B$ von Neumann algebras on which $\mathbb{G}$ acts. We refer to these as $\mathbb{G}$-dynamical W$^*$-algebras. We make a study of $\mathbb{G}$-equivariant $A$-$B$-correspondences, that is, Hilbert spaces $\mathcal{H}$ with an $A$-$B$-bimodule structure by $*$-preserving normal maps, and equipped with a unitary representation of $\mathbb{G}$ which is equivariant with respect to the above bimodule structure. Such structures are a Hilbert space version of the theory of $\mathbb{G}$-equivariant Hilbert C$^*$-bimodules. We show that there is a well-defined Fell topology on equivariant correspondences, and use this to formulate approximation properties for them. Within this formalism, we then characterize amenability of the action of a locally compact group on a von Neumann algebra, using recent results due to Bearden and Crann. We further consider natural operations on equivariant correspondences such as taking opposites, composites and crossed products, and examine the continuity of these operations with respect to the Fell topology.

Abstract:Assume that $R$ is a non-right perfect ring. Then there is a proper class of classes of (right $R$-) modules closed under transfinite extensions lying between the classes $\mathcal P _0$ of projective modules, and $\mathcal F _0$ of flat modules. These classes can be defined as variants of the class $\mathcal F \mathcal M$ of absolute flat Mittag-Leffler modules: either as their restricted versions (lying between $\mathcal P _0$ and $\mathcal F \mathcal M$), or their relative versions (between $\mathcal F \mathcal M$ and $\mathcal F _0$). In this survey, we will deal with applications of these classes in relative homological algebra and algebraic geometry. The classes $\mathcal P _0$ and $\mathcal F _0$ are known to provide for approximations, and minimal approximations, respectively. We will show that the classes of restricted flat relative Mittag-Leffler modules, and flat relative Mittag-Leffler modules, have rather different approximation properties: the former classes always provide for approximations, but the latter do not, except for the boundary case of $\mathcal F _0$. The notion of an (infinite dimensional) vector bundle is known to be Zariski local for all schemes, the key point of the proof being that projectivity ascends and descends along flat and faithfully flat ring homomorphisms, respectively. We will see that the same holds for the properties of being a $\kappa$-restricted flat Mittag-Leffler module for each cardinal $\kappa \geq \aleph_0$, and also a flat $\mathcal Q$-Mittag-Leffler module whenever $\mathcal Q$ is a definable class of finite type. Thus, as in the model case of vector bundles, Zariski locality holds for flat quasi-coherent sheaves induced by each of these classes of modules. Moreover, we will see that the notion of a locally $n$-tilting quasi-coherent sheaf is Zariski local for all $n \geq 0$.
Magnitude homology is a derived functor

Abstract:We prove that the magnitude (co)homology of an enriched category can, under some technical assumptions, be described in terms of derived functors between certain abelian categories. We show how this statement is specified for the cases of quasimetric spaces, finite quasimetric spaces, and finite digraphs. For quasimetric spaces, we define the notion of a distance module over a quasimetric space, define the functor of (co)invariants of a distance module and show that the magnitude (co)homology can be presented via its derived functors. As a corollary we obtain that the magnitude cohomology of a quasimetric space can be presented in terms of Ext functors in the category of distance modules. For finite quasimetric spaces, we show that magnitude (co)homology can be presented in terms of Tor and Ext functors over a certain graded algebra, called the distance algebra of the quasimetric space. For finite digraphs, the distance algebra is a bound quiver algebra. In addition, we show that the magnitude cohomology algebra of a finite quasimetric space can be described as a Yoneda algebra.
