Abstract:Reflection on and criticism of enlightenment reason is an indispensable part of the Enlightenment itself. It is an important counterbalance to the Enlightenment myth and the crisis of modernity, as well as being a major theoretical subject for political philosophy in the age of globalization. This reflection and criticism must be grasped and examined from both the external perspective of socio-historical requirements and the internal perspective of intellectual history. While giving full credit to the achievements of Enlightenment reason and modernity, we need to review their inherent conflicts, reveal the resultant social crisis, and sort out, reflect on and reference postmodernism's denunciation of Enlightenment reason and the crisis of modernity in order to provide a more far-reaching solution to these issues. Marx turned the critique of Enlightenment reason and modernity into a critical reconstruction of the logic of capital and the capitalist mode of production, seeing the resolution of these evils as lying in transcendence of capitalist private ownership. In this way, he brought the critique of Enlightenment reason to a climax and showed modern society a way to more advanced development.

Abstract:This study examines the proposition that the ideological structure of “Western Marxism” began to unravel after 1989 and the end of the Cold War, and that it is now largely falling apart. The argument proceeds in three steps, the first of which is an overview of Western Marxism’s ideological structure. The second step analyses a number of deeply critical assessments of Western Marxism from within the contexts of the few countries of the world that make up the “West.” The fact that these critical and often polemical studies are appearing indicates the breakdown of Western Marxism’s former hegemony. The third step deals with more constructive material, including the Western “recovery” of Engels, and especially the dialectics of nature, as well as the impact of the major achievements in the theory and practice of Marxism from developing countries, in the context of socialism in power.

Abstract:In the development process of British New Left,"British Marxism" rose and grew up.Under intergeneration tensions between the First and the Second New Left,it underwent an evolution from a unity through a duality to diversity.Basically,its innovations in historical materialism achieved through academic research in diverse disciplines of humanities and social sciences.On the one hand,it freed historical materialism from the shackles of economic determinism,produced a new naturalized form of historical materialism with English characteristics and vigorously promoted the propagation of historical materialism in English speaking world.On the other hand,as a whole,its advance in historical materialism focuses on theories of the social formation,classes,the state and the culture.
Mapping Western Marxism: On Zhang Yi-bing’s Deep Plough of Texts

Abstract:Professor Zhang Yi-bing has made special contributions in the field of studies of Marxism abroad. He not only made many case studies of Western Marxism, but also put forward a new framework for the research of this field. His basic point is that Western Marxist tradition had ended in 1968 after the publication of Negative Dialectics because the principles of authentic Marxism and the critique of capitalism had been abandoned. From then on, Marxism in western world was divided into three trends: post-Marxism, postmodern Marxism and Neo-Marxism. Although this view is illuminating, it is partial to some degree. This article will argue that, according to the change of theoretical logic and social reality, the historical process of Western Marxism can be divided into four types: modernist Marxism, postmodernist Marxism, Marxism of modernity and Marxism of postmodernity. Here the division is based on the problem of whether Western Marxists are still insisting on the relevance of Marxian dialectic of modernity, instead of the principle of authentic Marxism, the critique of capitalism, or the categories of identity and totality.

Abstract:The ideological theory is an important part of Marxism.Karl Marx creatively built the basic framework of ideological critique,but he also left behind many unsolved problems,which not only brought about many arguments for the later generations,but also inaugurated an extensive space for the theoretical innovation and development.The Marxist ideological theory has experienced two important transformations.Firstly,started from Georg Lukacs and Antonio Gramsci,and fully spread in the Frankfurt School,the ideological critique theory came into a new stage.Simultaneously,the social psychological study representatively discussed by Wilhelm Reich and Erich Fromm and Althusser's Structuralism are also the two important threads.Secondly,it happened in the thoughts of Post-Marxsim,the ideological study achieved its modern transformation when Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe elucidated the ideology of articulation.

Abstract:Marx's state theory is not only an important component of historical materialism, but also a necessary part of his political thought. After long years of silence, Marxist state theory revived after WWII and developed anew in the era of globalization. Study of its main ideas, historic fate, further development and new agenda can confirm its explanatory power in the present day and promote its reconstruction and enrichment in the era of globalization. However, some questions in the intellectual structure of Marxism are still open to further study: for instance, the relations between civil society and the state and between the economic foundation and superstructure, the withering away of the state as the end of politics, human emancipation and its conditions, the economic and political forms of the transition from a capitalist to a communist society, and particularly the form of organizational system adopted by the dictatorship of the proletariat, and the ideology of the crucial link of the reproduction of social relations. At the same time, we need to learn from and integrate new social science theories and actively respond to the great changes in political organization and structure brought about by globalization, while actively participating in the great theoretical debates of today.

Abstract:Since the 20th century, culture has gradually become the central discourse, becoming increasingly complex and difficult to understand. The current academic research on Marxist cultural theory is more based on the perspectives of cultural and political philosophy, while the inspection from the perspective of paradigm has not been fully reflected. This paper attempts to sort out the multi-dimensional paradigm analysis of Marxist cultural theory by British New Left and clarify how they solve the cultural crisis by reconstructing cultural concepts. Firstly, by re-exploring the relationship between culture and the base/ superstructure theory model, breaking the shackles of economic determinism and releasing the relative autonomy of culture. Secondly, focus on the materialist view of culture, criticize elitism, and stimulate the political liberation poten tial of culture. Finally, combine ideology and hegemony theory to solve the cultural structure and subject dilemma. After the transformation of multiple paradigms and theoretical disputes, British New Left has expanded the interpretation space of Marxist cultural theory, but it has also gradually fallen into the whirlpool of postmodernism and has drifted away from historical materialism.

Abstract:Since Karl Korsch's "Marxism and philosophy" came out,the question of relationship between Marxism and philosophy has been a hot issue.There are two representative views for this issue.One thinks that Marxism is mainly an experiential theory of history,a neutral,objective and functional explication to human history and modern social structure.Another insists that Marxism is a philosophy essentially,and a cultural and political criticism of social alienation and the reification in social life and culture.Both of the directions are reasonable to some extent,otherwise are one-sided.As McClellan noted,by effectively integrating history,philosophy,sociology and economics,Marx's social theory has made greatest achievement in the history of human thoughts in 19th century.If we view in terms of this position,Marx's contribution to our age is not that he set up a new philosophy in ordinary sense or he put forward a special doctrine in any social science,but that he was the first man who consciously succeeded in overcoming antagonism between philosophy and science,opened up a new practice of philosophy,namely integrating all scientific knowledge to form a unified social critical theory from normative perspective of human self-creation and liberation.As a critical social theorist,Marx has made most influential criticism and diagnosis of modern society and capitalism based on the norms of modernity and ideal of human emancipation.The new way of which takes Marxism as the critical theory of modern society has its own merits,by the way we not only can go beyond the so-called dualistic constellation between 'scientific Marxism' and 'Critique of Marxism',but also would be beneficial to well grasp the intrinsic unity and its contemporary significance of Marx's thought.

Abstract:The contribution describes the differences between modernism and postmodernism as historical periods of the twentieth century and establishes comparable differences between structuralism and post-structuralism as semiotic approaches. Like modernism, structuralism rejects traditional modes of thought, attempts to reconstruct academic disciplines on the basis of a few fundamental principles and strives to work with reconstructed terminologies and axioms. Like post-modernism, post-structuralism is characterized by the necessity of finding ways to continue research based on the fragmentary results left by structuralist projects. In the beginning of the twentieth century, structuralism itself had responded to materialism, atomism, historicism, and naturalism by introducing its own methodology built around the dichotomies of signified and signifier, paradigm and syntagm, synchrony and diachrony, langue and parole. Rather than rejecting this apparatus, post-structuralism explicated the paradoxes behind these dichotomies and tried to overcome them by under-mining the first concept of each pair. This change of perspective foregrounded the material, processual, and intertextual character of signs as well as the sense-producing function of interpretation. Rejecting rigidly fixed methods as well as general theories, and waiving the distinction between object-signs and meta-signs in favor of their joint reflection, post-structuralist semiotics became an alternative to conventional practices of academic sign analysis and now approaches the status of an art.

Abstract:There is no rupture between the early-stage and the late-stage western Marxism. Inheriting Hegelism and carrying forward Marx' philosophy of praxis and philosophical anthropology, early western Marxism applied its critique to the human nature and the cultural structure of the capital society. These efforts are of general significance to the capitalism, thus bringing early theories of western Marxism into a tradition, which has been carried on by Frankfurt School and those western Marxists since the 1970s. The late-stage western Marxism never leaves behind its predecessor's main interest in the philosophical criticism of capitalism, and lays more emphasis on postmodernity, consumerism, popular culture, signs, identity, locality, spatial politics, techno-ideology, etc. The changes show though culture is turning to be a main interest in the west, cultural critique is still based on Marxist historical materialism, especially the criticism of capitalism by Marxist political economics.

Abstract:In the historical transformation over decades, Frankfurt School of Critical Theory experienc?es three stages of development, that is, from“old Critical Theory”to“new Critical Theory”to“post Critical Theory”. As for their relation with Marxism, the first stage is represented by Horkheimer and Adorno’s“interdisciplinary materialism”and enlightenment dialectics, which is gradually away from traditional Marxism; the second stage is represented by Habermas’s re-construction of historical materialism, which is beyond recognition; the third stage is represented by Honneth’s reinterpretation of early Critical Theory and Marxism, which turns out to be“another Marxism”. Therefore, generally speaking, the attitudes of the three generations of Frankfurt School are: from appreciation, belief to doubt, criticism, to surpassing and reconstruction of Marxism.

Abstract:The 20th century witnessed the development of Marxism in the West from the fierce anger of the public to the complaints of a few individuals and from fights on the street to bets in the study.The drastic logical changes in the narratives of capitalism and political formulation made them the heresy in the eyes of classical Marxists.The post-Marxists even attempt to take the place of the traditional Marxism by new political formulation and radical "revolutionary" strategies.To understand the evolution of Marxism theories in the West,we need to reflect how Marxism theories developed in different periods of capitalism development,and how it evolved in terms of the historical epistemology,capitalist reality and political discourse.

Abstract:Most of contemporary radical thoughts are not only traditionally revolutionary and utopian alternatives to capitalist mode of production,but also new epistemological approaches. With a complicated relation between the two,they focus on the reflection upon disciplinary knowledge and reorientation of historical narratives. At this point,they are qualified to the term "post-Marxism" ,in their attempt to take over the ideological (hegemonic) place of Marxism with new historical epistemologies,new political understandings and new strategies for political struggles. While the whole Western Marxism has been inspired by Lukacs' History and Class Consciousness,its shift to the post-Marxism position is due to the following changes —— political position relating to capitalism and anti-capitalist movements and further turns of narrative of subjects. In order to understand correctly the qualities,reference of discourse and value of different kinds of current western radical thoughts,it is necessary to rewrite their logic intellectual histories by focusing on the relations among their radical political strategies,historical epistemologies and capitalist reality.
