Abstract:To achieve good services, libraries should find out how users think about library services and what they want those services to be. From March 2004, Tsinghua University Library started a project based on LibQUAL+~ TM of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). In this paper, we present a whole practice process of library service quality survey in Tsinghua University Library, and discuss the evaluation method with result analysis in detail.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: The questionnaire of World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL) is an effective tool on the evaluation of QOL. What the questionnaire determined is the situations of the objects during recent two weeks,including physiology,psychology,independence,social relation,environment and spiritual or religious belief. Therefore WHOQOL can be used in the evaluations of QOL among people. DATA SOURCES: An overall retrieval was conducted on computer to identify the articles on the evaluations of QOL between January 1994 and December 2004 on China Hospital Digital Library (CHKD) using the key words of "measurement of quality of life,evaluation of quality of life" in Chinese. Meanwhile,we searched Medline database for the English articles of the evaluations of QOL published at the same time by imputing the key words of "Quality of life,Evaluation" into computer,and some related books were retrieved by handiwork. STUDY SELECTION: After the primary check,the associated articles with the origin,structure and application of the evaluation of QOL were chosen,and those unrelated articles were excluded. Inclusion criteria: The articles expatiating the source,structure,significance and application of the evaluation of QOL were collected. Whereas the repetitive researches were excluded. DATA EXTRACTION: Totally 66 articles of the evaluation of QOL were collected. There were 6 ones involved in the origin,11 in structure and 49 in application of the evaluation of QOL. And 35 articles were deleted,while 31 related articles were selected for reviews. DATA SYNTHESIS: The origin,structure and significance of the evaluation of QOL were briefly introduced,and then the principle,application and technological front of WHOQOL were summarized. WHOQOL is more suitable on the evaluation of QOL on the campus. CONCLUSION: The WHOQOL has the certain reliability and validity in the evaluation of QOL,and is more suitable for the evaluation of QOL in college studonts especially.

Abstract:The library is one of the most important factors that affect the quality of teaching in universities, and it plays an important role in improving college students'comprehensive quality,especially the ability of self-learning and innovation.To understand the differences and the influence factors in the use of library of some different kinds of universities,the Educational Statistics and Management Branch of Chinese Association for Ap-plied Statistics organized a multi -center survey on college students'classroom learning state in late 2010. Quantitative methods are applied to discuss the factors and the influences.The results show that there are com-mon factors among all the universities,and course plan and academic ability are the most important factors. Meanwhile,there are some unique factors,such as political status,monthly expenses,etc.Finally,universities can take certain measures according to the results to guide the students to make the best use of the libraries.
International students and the Chinese academic library: A user survey at Beijing Normal University Library

Abstract:With great increase of international students coming to study in China, more and more challenges occur for Chinese academic libraries to meet their needs. In case of Beijing Normal University Library (BNUL), we conducted a user survey and a five-point Likert Scale questionnaire focusing on the areas of library services, resources and environment was used to explore international students' library usage preference and their perceptions on importance and performance of these three areas. The analysis started with descriptive analysis followed by gap analysis between importance to the users and library's performance, and key findings from suggestions of international students were listed. The main objective of this paper is to know international students' information needs, analyze their assessment to the library, determine where and how gaps exist and find out aspects that BNUL need to improve. The paper finally drew some conclusions on how to improve BNUL service quality to international students.

Abstract:This study is based on the belief that inquiry-based learning should be made an integral part of any student's learning, especially at university level. To find out the students' perceptions toward library user education, 426 questionnaire surveys have been collected from the Peking University (PKU), China and the University of Tsukuba (UT), Japan. The results of this study indicate that, compared with UT, PKU students on the whole expressed higher ratings in many areas toward the user education programs provided by their respective library, and they also had a more positive view about the professional competence of the user education (reference services) librarians. The researchers believed that the different perceptions found between the PKU and UT groups were a direct result of the distinctive learning practices and curricular requirements exercised between the two universities. There are not many articles that explore the relationship between inquiry-based learning and the library user education in Asia. The findings of this study are useful for identifying the different learning modes between these two groups of students, as well as other barriers that were preventing the library user education programs to be integrated into inquiry-based learning, and the university's core curriculum as a whole.

Abstract:Since 1996 Tsinghua University Library has subscribed to more than 300 content databases. Through 70 platforms students and faculties gained access to 34,000 serial titles, in full text, including 22,000 English titles and 12,000 Chinese titles. In 2004, within the Tsinghua campus, there were total 1,700,000 searches to A&I databases and 2,800,000 downloads of full text articles and ebook chapters. To better understand the needs of the library patrons we conducted a survey whit focus in service satisfaction, e-resource value, usage of the information, and problems and issues in accessing databases. The responses and the results of the survey were overwhelmingly encouraging. With the positive feedbacks and constructive comments the library now can position itself to adjust the e-resource and provide better services with better information effectively.

Abstract:Customers usually have high expectations on the services they receive. The LibQUAL model was employed in this study to investigate the quality of services at an academic library. The participants were chosen from the five colleges in a university using simple random sampling. Two hundred participants were chosen from each college. In all, 1000 participants (including faculty members, postgraduate and undergraduate students) were selected for the study. The study revealed that users knew and used the library's services. The researchers delivered the questionnaires to the respondents at the library. The results showed that the library service quality (LSQ) fell short of users' expectations. There was a statistically significant difference in LSQ between gender of users. The users' expectations of the library's level of service were out of sync or mismatch. The variations could be attributed to differences in information needs of users. This requires the library to assess its services from users' perspective regularly. The use of the LibQUAL model provides useful information that library management can employ for developing service quality measurement scale and planning for service quality. The study also provides information about services that needs improvement, so that library staff could manage users' expectations and satisfaction in a better way. University authorities expect good return of investment made into the development of the library. Therefore, libraries should improve upon their services to boost the image of the Universities.

Abstract:Although the perceptions of library user education of academic libraries has been studied in a general context, specific studies on perspective of library and information science students are relatively few, especially in the context of Asia. Filling this research gap is particularly important because it affects the experiential learning of these pre-professionals, and shapes future library user education directions. As such, this study aims at understanding and comparing the views and perceptions of library user education programs in Greater China from the perspective of library and information science students. A total number 305 questionnaire survey responses were collected from three different universities in Greater China, namely: The University of Hong Kong (HKU), National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), and Peking University (PKU). Results from this survey study reveal high evaluations of library user education programs and library user education librarians as a whole, as well as possible ways for librarians to better promote such programs. Such ratings are attributed to findings from previous studies on why students choose librarianship as a career, as well as the importance of experiential learning embedded in the Library and Information Science programs at each university. Findings of this study also suggest that as pre-professionals (soon-to-be professional librarians), these student respondents recognize the values behind library user education as an important part of their overall learning practices. Results from this study will be useful in identifying how future library professionals in Greater China perceive library user education programs, and librarians – therefore potentially helping librarians improve the delivery of these services.

Abstract:Libraries are digitizing, and challenges are posed by digital technologies for institutions of higher education in China. This study aims to present the dimensionality of perceived service quality, its effect on customer satisfaction, and the case of a non-state-owned library's academic service quality. A sample consisting of valid 453 respondents used online recruitment to retrieve answers to questionnaires. Ten experts were invited to review the questionnaire for content validity and question clarity. In this study, the Fuzzy Delphi method was used to establish questionnaire indices and the attributes of library academic service quality elements made available by the Kano model. Three dimensions, including emotional service, physical environment, and information control, which are correlated under the attribute classification of the Kano model, indicate support for the validity of using integrated models in measuring library service quality. The results, according to the improvements in the customer satisfaction matrix, provide nine elements to improve the quality of service and two major improvements to enhance the perception of service quality. In addition, users pay less attention to the use of academic resources and academic ethics, but these factors do not affect the quality of service.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is quality assessment of services provided by the MUMS libraries and determining member satisfaction and expectations of library services in the LibQUAL dimensions. This research used the survey method for collecting data. Library service quality was measured by using 22 items taken directly from the 2004 version of the LibQUAL scale. The highest average score was “Service affect” with 6.39 and the lowest score 5.75 belonged to “Library as place”. Total results emphasised the importance of librarians' specialised knowledge level in presenting appropriate services in circulation and reference sections. A significant outcome, is in the “information control” dimension, and appropriate working hours; classification system for searching and accessing to information and appropriate time for loaning resources. The biggest gap related to updated multimedia databanks, appropriate number of computers and adequate facilities like laptops/PCs and broadband networks for better access to subscribed electronic resources through the MUMS central library web site. The results of this study emphasise the importance of librarians' specialised knowledge level in presenting appropriate services in circulation and reference sections as well as identifying strengths and weaknesses of MUMS schools and hospitals libraries for improving decisions affecting the library service quality. The findings show all highly important aspects of the “Service affect” dimension in academic libraries such as understanding user needs and presenting perfect service.

Abstract:Mobile service in libraries has become very popular in last few years. To notify the meaningful factors for the satisfaction with mobile library services, this study focuses on service quality and divides the factor into 4 sub-dimensions: resource quality, environment quality, interaction quality and outcome quality. The empirical findings revealed most sub-dimensions of service quality to be significant in explaining users’ satisfaction. Moreover, it was found that, there were different perception between public and academic library user groups regarding the sub-dimensions of mobile service quality and their influences on users’ satisfaction.

Abstract:In order to investigate the status of internet addiction among the young people,and to know exactly the relationship between internet surfing and library using,we conducted a questionaire survey among 250 students in Haidian district in Beijing.According to the results,about 18.6% of the Internet surfing youth are addicted to the internet and about 32.6% tend to be.Internet-addicted youth have partiality for all kinds of amusement online,and they have a certain demand for online resources and services of libraries.For the young people,taking full advantage of libraries can reduce the over dependence on Internet to a certain extent.However,most of the young people cannot or just unwilling to use the libraries,for the libraries can not provide excellent information services.

Abstract:This paper introduces the WeChat mobile library service programme at Shanghai University Library and identifies problems and resolutions by reviewing the development process and experience and user feedback. A case study was conducted, and user feedback from a web survey was analysed to identify the programme's problems. Accordingly, recommendations and resolutions were developed. The author discovers that a WeChat account is crucial as an interaction platform between libraries and patrons, particularly on mobile devices. Patrons prefer to receive library services via WeChat rather than other channels. Their favourite features include online public access catalogue (OPAC), my library, and study facility availability. Libraries should conduct regular assessments to understand patrons' feedback or requests and make timely adjustments accordingly. The web survey and its data are novel in this area and provide a credible example to optimize WeChat library services.
